    Duplass was excellent in this. I don't care what side you're on, if you can't see that he's taking a reasonable approach to politics here, then you're too deeply entrenched in whatever ideology you subscribe to.

    Favorite quote regarding your beginning point about the distinction between the existence of a good/service and government funding:
    “Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain.”

    The pipelines facilitate growth & maintenance of the whole oilfield sector in places like ND. They are safer, cleaner, & cheaper than shipments by truck or rail.
    The only reason to not support pipelines is if you are anti-oil & gas. However, there is no current implementable alternative, so it just means importing oil & gas, not elimination. And who thinks that the middle east or Venezuela care more about the environment than we do?
    The question therefore is: Why oppose pipelines?

People like Mark, that don't make their money doing political commentary, but are entertaining and thoughtful about both sides of issues, and are secure enough in their career to not worry about backlash. "I'd rather have a non-efficient thing than a non-entity". while I respect this guy for expanding his horizons very reasonably and accepting that he doesn't know everything (which I definitely do not either), I believe that having nothing is much better than having something that is bad, but feels good and provides a sense of comfort, like the government does. it just allows people to sit back and not become innovative because there's nothing really motivating them.

    This has to be one of my favorite interviews you have done and I am sure you know you have done quite a few great ones. I have been a fan of Mark's character in the League but never put any thought towards what he would be like in the real world. I will definitely be sharing this with a lot of friends/acquaintances who are on the left who refuse to listen or even acknowledge the other side. I sit in the middle and have always found it insane that the two sides can not get together on anything and seeing that a big name is working hard to push both sides together in order to do some good!

    Mark Duplass seems more reasonable and sincere than most people people left of center but I've got to comment on that agenda stuff. I have worked in hospitality for years during film festivals. I have driven producers, carried musician's instruments and helped actors overnight packages. Naturally I have overheard MANY of their private conversations while they're on the phone or talking with other guests. Let me put this as objectively as I can; the idea that there is NO agenda by either indie or big studio Hollywood is 100% false. Whether he just doesn't see it that way or is lying on purpose is up to his conscience.

    • @TickleMeElmo55
      @TickleMeElmo55 6 років тому

      Thanks for the insights. I once considered myself a film buff - learned about the different film festivals and the award circuits that entail them, learned about different studios (big and small), and learned about film budgets. I then learned about how actors are chosen, the politics within selection and how one becomes "established". There's a lot of interesting things in the movie/tv industry because, after all, it's a business. I also learned, as my politics slowly went from left to right, that Hollywood - big tent budget or not - leans hard to he left and is secular.

    Mark's claim that the ONLY agenda driven productions he sees are coming from religious groups goes far beyond bias, it's a delusion. Simply put, it's
    false. How many movies are even made from religious groups??? If he can't distinguish A film's narrative from the COLLECTIVE narrative that actually makes sense given his cleary broken perception of popular messaging. If he totes himself around as someone who can see both sides, he needs to take a vacation. Do people really expect a medal for simply aknowledging viewpoints outside of their microcosm? If so that adds to any layman's distain for the inflated value of hollywood. What's fair is fair, and it's impossible to bullshit forever.

      Point me to the agenda driven movies like gods not dead. Where the agenda is the base of the whole story. Obviously Hollywood is liberal and that viewpoint will show through what ever they create. Art is very subjective, and most movies will mirror the people that made it.

    Its so sad to see people who are surrounded by people who all believe the same thing and think they're "educated". Speak to anyone right of center in middle America who see's their state, culture, race, gender, religion, education, lifestyle, and values all consistently insulted on a daily basis by TV shows, movies, celebrities, and even "liberal" friends on social media. They have much more open-mindedness, education, and conviction because they're constantly having to stay informed to defend themselves from the relentless hatred thrown in their faces all the time.

    I swear some people in Hollywood think everyone who lives outside their world lives in these tiny, unenlightened bubbles. We all know films have agendas, and they're based on the story the maker is trying to tell. That doesn't bother me when it's simply about showing a different perspective or life style. Happy to watch a story about someone who's life is different than mine and hopefully learn something.
    What I don't like is when there is this attitude that "I'm going to enlighten you" because I am more worldly, have more wisdom, and my opinions are better than yours. The attitude that this life style is the correct life style or this person's story is better than someone else's or this person's struggle is more noble. Everyone has struggles and acting like there is this hierarchy of who's is worse or harder drives me crazy!

    On the budget cuts, our SECDEF, James Mattis had an interview about defense spending and talked about when they do cuts in defense they cut everything equally across the board. He made a point that when the cuts come, nobody looks intently at when programs they really don't need and that aren't effective. I think that outlook can be applied to all government spending. I think we need to look at which programs really are just staying afloat and not doing anything, cutting those programs and applying any loose change to bolster other effective programs.
    However, on the flip side, he stated that there is an entanglement of red tape that prevents these programs from being cut completely and that the red tape itself is wasteful spending.
    After spending four years in the military I feel I have the same perspective as Mattis and that the wasteful spending is a hindrance to our tax dollars being effectively utilized and cuts need to be made in an appropriate fashion.

    This is an interesting topic to me. I used to study film and switched to construction because I didn't feel comfortable or safe with investing an education into film production.
    I know that arts degrees are completely worthless, and that was a big problem for me, but the one thing that pushed me out of "following my passion" was that my professors were trying to push their hard left politics onto us, and that my conservative views were very much not welcome in the classroom or the small parts of the industry I got to interact with.
    I can't believe Mark when he says that there is no agenda in Hollywood when the people meant to help us get there are trying to tell us what to think in a course about editing.
    I'd hate to make the accusation that he's sheltered because it's not entirely fair since he does reach out, but I had to change my entire life direction because the amount of bias and vitriol I saw in the industry. I didn't feel safe with that kind of life choice.

  • @amcclenny6
    @amcclenny6 7 років тому +17

    The federal funding for defense should be higher than the arts...The states formed the federal government for the purpose of national defense and managing interstate commerce.
    One way to think about it...
    California probably has a much higher interest in the arts, as opposed to a state like Texas. Why would the citizens of Texas be on the hook for funding it?

    • @featherman9
      @featherman9 7 років тому +7

      I don't think anyone is arguing the government should spend more on the Arts then they do on defense. But the question is should the government be spending so much on defense, and if we have so much waist in the military budget why focus on cutting the arts when there are much bigger fish to fry.

      @Bolter024 7 років тому +1

      Levi agree

    • @nooneimportant2787
      @nooneimportant2787 7 років тому +3

      Federal funding for defense is something like 600 Billion. Spending for the arts is a small fraction of the 100 Billion spent on education. So the state already spends 100's of times more on defense than the arts. In my opinion the real question should be, why is the government funding the arts at any level. I see no purpose in the government giving money to organizations that are meant to provide cultural/spiritual/religious experiences.

    • @amcclenny6
      @amcclenny6 7 років тому

      No one Important: I agree. The Federal government should spend $0.00 on the arts...along with several other programs/departments, but I'll leave those alone for now. If a state wants to fund the arts, like California, they are more than welcome to do so if the CA voters want. Their issue is that without the Federal government's funding for the arts, they can't afford to do so without cutting some of the other waste.
      As far as the costs go, as long as taxes aren't raised to fund national defense, it really doesn't matter to me. In fact, if we could get the Federal government out of nonsense that they have no need or Constitutional reason to be in, and allow the states (the closest to the people) choose how to best deal with the needs of their citizens, the cost to the taxpayers would drop significantly.
      - It is truly sad to see how people are so conditioned to see the Federal government as the boss. Nobody seems to remember that the states are sovereign...basically separate countries that are a part of this 50 member union, and each contributes dues that are to be used ONLY for the NEEDS of the collective. This is where "Progressives" came in. They believed that the collective was the most important, and the right of the individual (state/person) should be irrelevant if it slowed their idea progress.

    "The only people I know who are truly making really agenda-driven films that don't show any fairness in the antagonists. . .the only films that I have seen that truly do that are coming from the extreme religious sector of filmmaking."
    Well then, you haven't seen Lions for Lambs, Redacted, Rendition, W, Frost/Nixon, Good Night and Good Luck, Fahrenheit 9/11, Platoon, Thank You for Smoking, Truth, anything by Aaron Sorkin, Oliver Stone or Michael Moore, for that matter.
    Yes the religious right makes horrible movies with straw man villains (God Is Not Dead, etc), but let's compare the sheer number as well as distribution of those niche films with the anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-military films Hollywood churns out every year. If you're not aware of agenda-driven films, either you don't watch all that many films or you can't see the agenda because you agree with it.

    The biggest problem of all is relying on anything or anyone, even relying on the internet for research or simply pure entertainment. All the moments we spend on youtube, google, whatever, is slowly (or quickly) robbing us of our own organic creativity. Sure, we're inspired by the things we see but think back to a younger time, when you didn't have so many options as one does these days. You were most likely healthier and more naturally aware of your surroundings and the things you said were't tainted because you weren't inclined to get all your information from 17, 000 different media sources. Most of us don't realize how spoiled we really are. It's probably more of a burden than a blessing that we are allowed so much immediate stimulation. What happened to the artists we used to be? "ppl call me baby killer cause I support abortion clinics" aaaaaand? Is that supposed to be the counter equivalent of being called a rascist because I listen to facts? That's a bit of a stretch.

    If anyone is interested in knowing exactly who gives more to charity in the private sector, check out a book called "Who Cares". People DO give in the absence of public charities and entitlements.

    Dave, you should interview Brett Easton Ellis. He has a podcast that discusses art criticism and how social justice culture is regressing the progress of art. His latest episode was about the liberal meltdown to Trump winning.

    A lot of art has the infrastructure to exist because of Federal Money. It allows art that is historically significant such as classical and Jazz music to have scholarships, teaching groups that tour the country and bring it to kids and families who otherwise would not have the opportunity. Maybe Dave needs to bring on someone who knows everything about that and why it's valuable.

    Funding to Meals On Wheels has not been cut. The Funding program that was cut, only gave a very small amount to good things like MOW. The program was fraught, with corruption, and monies were going to things that did not help the needy, which was the purpose of the program initially. Monies were used to build things like marinas, art museums, auditoriums and such. Those are nice things for communities, but don't do anything for the needy.

    Meals on wheels--here is my perspective:
    It's the evidence of a problem, and funding it soothes it but doesn't solve it. Why do we have senior citizens unable to feed themselves? Is it an issue of money/poverty or disability? If it's disability, then we need manpower such as assisted living. If it's poverty, then we have to know what caused that poverty to fix it, e.g., is it because of low savings rates, too high of inflation, people outliving their expectations, bad info/planning on retirement, irresponsibility?
    Funding or not funding it is the band aid on the bullet wound.

    Trump said that the meals on wheels isn't being stopped, the monies are being put under a different budget area. I also worked with meals on wheels and we got a lot of donations from local companies, corporations, grocery stores, and the people that work in the kitchens and delivering do not make a salary.

    I was with this dude for parts 1 and 2, as he seemed really rational and reasonable for a dude on the "left". He lost me here though. No leftist agenda in Hollywood? Please. You don't think Moonlight was actually the best picture of the year, do you? He mentions films like God is Not Dead (and as an Atheist and a movie fanatic, I can safely sat that movie is effing awful) coming from the right as being the only movies with legit agendas, but doesn't even mention a guy like Michael Moore? How is he ANY different?

    lol meals on wheels issue- govt only contributed ~5%, the rest was charity. Now that Trump cut that, private donations went up bigly and meals on wheels has way more money to serve the people. Sooo Meals on Wheels won.

    It doesnt even have any impact on the food delivery side, its a housing subsidy.

    There is a way of knowing if private charity will fill the role of government, with respect to Meals on Wheels. It's called "crowding out". It's a whole branch of Economics that studies the effect of government involvement in a market. Additionally, there is myriad data that shows private charity was far more robust before government provided the level of welfare they do today.

    The real takeaway I hope people get from this interview is that Hollywood is a business. So! If there's a movie or TV show that you think is about to come out and push an agenda, curb your curiosity and refrain from watching it. It's that simple. I too, used to get irked by these underhanded in your face messages. But then I just took responsibility for what I chose to watch and contribute to. Good example. While I'm sure that recent Spider-Man movie was awesome, I wish they'd stop making remakes and super hero movies. So I'm no longer going to the movies to watch them. If you continue to go to the movies and rent them, you're only contributing dollars to their decision making process, by which they will green-light yet another remake or superhero movie. So don't blame the studios, blame the fans essentially.
