I have my cosmetology license and they definitely didn’t teach us in depth about lashes. They only taught us clusters. Lol. Thankfully I didn’t go just to learn lashes. I thought I loved hair but didn’t turn out that way! Found my love for lashing and invested more in my education. Sucks though that states require that if you’re just looking to be a lash tech. They spend so much money on a license when they don’t even focus on lashes. Hopefully it changes soon!!!! Thank you for this very informative video!

So agreed. I am from Ukraine living in California. In Ukraine we have great cosmetology schools which offer any beauty courses you want yet if you want to be a lash artist only certification you need is lash certification. I mean what you need to be an esthetician for 🤷‍♀️

Going to your state board website and looking at the different schools and their pricing can save you thousands! I was going to go to a big beauty school and pay $13000 but I found a close community college that offers the esthetician program for $3000. Look at all of your resources! I’m personally so happy I decided to get licensed because I have the option to offer other services learned in school or get other certifications on top of lashing. It all depends on your situation and goals. Wishing everyone success! ✨🥰

Omg 🙌🏽 Yes thank you! I totally agree with you!!! I am licensed and I am so happy I choose that route specially now with covid I did 1600 hours of endless sanitation and client protection that back then I use to think why??? Now I know why and I am so thankful I did 🙏🏼
Let’s not ding State board . State board is there for a reason.. And it’s called client protection first if you want to specialize in something else then that’s when you have to take the more advance courses. Best wishes and success to everyone 💕

School is worth it no matter what. I know they don’t go into depth about lashing, which sucks. but they teach you things that you wouldn’t be able to pick up on your own unless you hardcore researched it. Cleaning your tools PROPERLY is so important. Knowing how to even mix your barbicide is important, if you mess up the ratio then it’s not effective. You need to know when you need to sanitize & what to do if there’s an emergency like accidentally making your client bleed (blood exposure safety). getting your license is so worth it & will open many doors. You can charge more money & you can offer other services that’ll make you even more money. I chose a really small school that was around $7,000 for the esthetician program & I still take additional classes on top of it & certifications. If you’re not willing to invest in yourself, you won’t grow.

I love you guys!! I live in Wisconsin and here- it is not required to have a cosmetology or esthetician license. I took a one day certification course recently and I learned a lot. I just started watching your guys’ videos. You inspire me so much and give such helpful advice. You do have to be licensed to do lash lifts here though.

I'm from California and i truly hope this crazy requirements by state board to do lash extensions in a legitimate way change one day...I truly don't see the point of people having to spend thousands of dollars in cosmetology or Esthetician school when realistically they don't even teach anything on real lash extensions... 🤷🏻(at least not the beauty schools in my area)It makes no sense.. Anyway I do understand & feel for both sides on this topic...

Being licensed is important. As a nurse, cosmetologist, and lash tech I fear for the clients who are in the hands of an unlicensed “certified” lash tech. Those who are licensed are educated on anatomy, skin, s/s of infection, proper sterilization, and general safety. Taking a quick lash course is not sufficient. People’s EYES and the safety of their eyes and vision should be taken very seriously. You cannot learn that in a lash course 😒 We take state tests to be licensed to PROVE that we hold the proper knowledge required to not harm another person while performing your profession. Not to mention, impersonating a state licensed employee is punishable by fines and jail time

I know the difference and when I went to school had no intention doing lashes but now that’s my desire. My goal turned into let me just get this license and then find a company to further my love for doing lashes now! You two are so funny! Love your passion and energy! If I don’t win the free class I pray to be able to afford it soon...

It's sad but its just the way it is. Just about every state has the licensing requirement to do lashes and treatments. I think they look at it as a way to make money but there is a safety component to it too. I was a makeup artist for 15 years, my state changed the licensing requirements and so I had a choice get my esti license or move on. So I paid the 5k, took the time and graduated and got my esti license. They mentioned lash extensions in school but did not teach them so I just paid another 650.00 to take a certification course in May with a licensed esti teacher who is an amazing lash artist and I am super excited! As my teachers have taught me the state board does not care about how many certifications you have, if you get caught or hurt someone you're getting trouble. Invest in the license and then you don't ever have to worry..because yes people will report you because they spent the money and put the hours in for that license.

Please read this… I’ve been through it…..In the US you have to be licensed…… You need papers. Usually when you go to a class or school they’re there to teach BASICS. Stop thinking that you aren’t gonna have to teach yourself. If you don’t like it then don’t get into the beauty industry. I went to cosmetology school and paid $20,000.00 and we were told this is basically to teach us basics and to get out license. You have to take continued education every 2 years anyways. To keep your license

Great video 👏 I agree with you, Shauna. Lashes should have their own specialty. I’m Canadian, and it is different based on each province (most can do whatever they want 😬). In New Brunswick and Nova Scotia we have to be licensed Aestheticians. I think lashes should have their own license. It is not covered near enough in the classroom, and severe damage can be caused if done improperly. I was grandfathered in before the cosmetology association got ahold of lashes, but it doesn’t make sense. They created separate courses for nails, makeup, and waxing, why not lashes? Hopefully the industry will change 🤞

  • @jimmiesanders8139

And most will have to have an Instructors License. A certification adds to an existing profession. Esthetics is not a lash course and that's why a class in lash Extensions is additional. Minnesota has a 38 hour course. Beauty school DO NOT teach Lashes. It is a separate course and will never be apart of the course.

Personally just coming from working in a shop where most women are only licensed in lashes. & from what I’ve seen in my area. Esti’s are cleaner & I only say this because it was beat into our heads on sanitation. Day after day. Routine is huge & will stick with you forever. That’s the only reason I say people should go to school because I think cleanliness is huge. I’ve seen some shady stuff for ladies with certificates & ONLY Lash licensed ladies. J/S. But again school doesn’t teach much on lashes. No volume training, just the basics. So I appreciate my certifications. So yea I can see both ways.

Georgia is one of the states that doesn't matter whether u have an esthetics license or lash certification because lashes aren't a practice which state board governs, I'm an esthetician and certified lash tech but realistically after getting my esthetic license I didn't have to spend nothing else to train I could've started lashing w/o being certified just hopped over to doing lashes......and as someone w/a License who knows both sides it is detrimental to be sending these ppl out to work on the most sensitive organ of the body we just a certificate, not being judgemental but there's NO WAY u learned ALL infection control procedures, safety & sanitation, & the science behind hair growth, eye function, & assessed eye shape and proper execution of a lash set within 5 days like it's a cram course and we're sending these folks out to work on ppls eyes that is the problem that's why I personally feel any Esthetician and Lash tech should be treated the same U NEED A LICENSE PERIODT

I’m not so much pissed that girls are doing it unlicensed.... I’m pissed for my clients. When I’ve got girls who ask my pricing and ghost me but message me 2 weeks later after going to someone cheaper who only got a certification (from someone else who also isn’t licensed properly) and my clients lashes are all stuck together, hurting my client... I do a removal and half their lashes are gone in chunks. Like that’s why I’m pissed. Because it’s taking a great loyal client out of the equation to have to grow her lashes back for a few months. I’m in CO. You have to be licensed esthi or cosmetology here and a lash certification to do lashes. I had 2 beauty schools close on me while trying to finish my 1800 hour cosmetology course and it took me 3 years to graduate. Then I got out and had to pay another $1500 for just a classic lash course at the time. So.... about $23,500 in tota for me to just do lashes. And girls think they can just take a course from anyone and do lashes?? No, I had to show my cosmetology license anytime I’ve taken any sort of course. I couldn’t get into the class without showing it. So why isn’t that a requirement?? It’s not consistent. And my beauty school taught me absolutely nothing about lashes. Not even 1 day, and I went to 3 beauty schools. Yes. Make lashes a seperate license like nails. Because it pisses me off when my clients try somewhere cheaper and come back to me for a removal and not able to get a new set. Like I get lashes are a luxury service, but now it’s like everyone and their mom thinks they can just stick lashes on people with gorilla glue and call it good. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I finished a master esthics course in Washington state at the end of October 2020. I moved back to my home town in Washington, in the pacific northwest right after I finished school. Because of covid testing was backed up . When finally was able to get testing dates scheduled the county I live in went back to phase 1 . My mother and my grandmother live in my home as well and they don't feel comfortable with me traveling out of town to testing facilities until number go down so I had to cancel my testing dates . I will reschedule as soon as things are safer ... I finished my course about a mouth and half sooner than everyone else who started the same time as me . I didn't miss much class . I studied hard . I got in and out quickly. I wanted to do lashes from day one . Its so hard to keep this info fresh in my mind . I currently lash from home . I do not charge . I take donations - I don't do services without donations but since I am still learning and I am not licensed through the state my clients make donations of about half of what they would usually pay .
I would much rather be licensed and work under somebody but I need to generate income... any advice?

The school I’m signing up for has about like 3-5 Days set aside for lashes which is why o chose them. I want to be able to to know the skin and the sanitation’s and things like that. Plus I don’t want to have my clients asking me to do a quick brow wax or something like that to finish off the look and not be able to do it. Imagine how much more money some lash artist could make adding a $15-20 brow wax to even HALF of their clients. That’s why I feel like going all the way is worth it. My Esthetics course taught lash tabbing for one day during a makeup section which is just ardell cluster falsies. I didn’t need to be an esty to do PMU but I wanted to be able to offer more services. Tattoo artists can’t wax eyebrows. Most lash courses teach NOTHING about sanitation and disease prevention. I’ve seen lash artists brag about cleaning their implements with just the tips in barbicide. That’s the problem I have with just doing a course. You need to know how to clean linens for the PUBLIC not your home. At LEAST tattoo requirements have an HIV blood born pathogens course requirement.

In our state, we have to be licensed in esthe. or cosmo. in order to legally lash, but we can get lash certified as long as we are students in either. We can "practice" on family but can't legally charge anyone until we have our license. Now that we are in Covid crisis, our state boards are backed up by 3-4 months, so people have to get on a waitlist just to get their license. So here's a question, when you teach in Oregon, would you still teach someone who is still in school, waiting for their boards & have a certification, or those that are license holders only?

Yes as long as it’s allowed by state board than you can still take the course if your in school ❤️

Hello, hopefully this isn’t a dumb question but is it possible to take cosmetology classes online? Or everything has to be in person? I live in the middle of nowhere & the closest beauty school to me is an hour away

I don't want to do lashes only though. I want to do a lot more. It is upsetting that they don't teach lashes. It's actually ridiculous. But I mind my business. I'm not officer no badge lol

It’s so upsetting they don’t teach lashes because it is an esthetic service just like everything else you learn in school

Connecticut schools have now included a license just for lashes - 50 course hours. I wish all states would specially NY. How do you guys work with the state?
