Face grain
cool video but... those cutting boards are mostly face grain, not edge grain.
All face grain is edge grain. Face grain just refers to the wider of the parallel set of edge grain sides.
Face grain, those aren’t edge grain.
Face grain is just relative to how thick or thin you cut the boards compared to the sides. They’re all edge, or long, grain.
I do not believe that to be true since your wood is already cut, and by definition you used the face grain of those boards and thus you made face grain boards. had you cut those in strips, and turned them on their edge and re-glued them, you would have been using the edge grain.
@@keithhart266 Correct. Before the tree was milled, there was no edge grain or face grain. Once the mill decided which orientation to cut the tree, it established the face and the edge of each board. The rest of the life of that board is driven by that decision, both how it looks and how it moves. It's true if the mill had picked 90degrees off of what they picked, then the edge would be face and the face would be edge. But a) the mill knows what they are doing and b) once the decision is made by the mill there is a permanent difference. I prefer to run my chef's knife over edge grain boards because the grain is *inconsistent* and less likely to dull a blade.
What was your thickness of your boards?
They typically range from 0.75”-1.5” for edge grain and 1.5”-3” for end grain styles

How much do you pay for hard wood? Here in Hawai`i in 2023 maple is like $7.00 a foot for 1 x 3 at Home D. Kinda hard to make money at those rates. What would it cost whee you live?
I recommend looking into a hardwood store, where you’ll buy by the board foot, not the foot. Hard maple costs roughly $6.50 per bf where I am on the east coast. This varies greatly on the species of wood, thickness, and if it’s surfaced.
Note: a volume of one board foot is 12” x 12” x 1”.

These are face grain boards, not edge grain
Face and edge are arbitrary terms depending on how you utilize them. All face grain is edge grain, but not all edge grain is face grain.
