The AFC East had 3 teams at 9-7 and the Bills at 8-8. That's pretty rare that not one team in the division had a losing record

The game before this (a decisive SNF win in Foxborough against the Patriots), this game, and the 41-0 beatdown of the Colts in the first round of the playoffs is one of the best 3-game stretches in Jets franchise history. Rarely have they ever played better.

This season is why I fell in love with this team. Chad Pennington was a really good QB (one of my favs of all time) and Herm Edwards really got his team to dial in. Too bad Chad was so injury prone otherwise this was the beginning of a great stretch in Jets football history.

58 years old here, lifelong Jets fan. This was without a doubt the most fun regular season day I ever had as a Jets fan. Living and dying on every play of the Miami/New England game. The euphoria when NE won in OT and then the Jets actually kicking Green Bay's asses and winning the division. The following week vs Indy was the last Jets home playoff game to date.

@@TL2354 This is one of the best all time stories in NFL history.
The jets, a long suffering, sad sack franchise FINALLY had a few years of relevance with parcells. After going up 10-0 in the afc championship game with testaverde they lose. Then Vinny goes down with an Achilles, destroying the next season. The franchise gets gutted by Parcells stepping down and then Belichick quits at his introductory press conference as HC of the NYJ.
They have one mediocre season with a wild card loss in 01 and the beginning of 02 it's a mess.
1st overall pick Keyshawn Johnson leaves.
Despite miracle comebacks under Al Groh (including the monday night miracle) they miss the POs.
This season starts 1-4 and it seems obvious the run is well over. It's a pretty sad time to be a Jets fan realizing it's all over, realizing all the franchise has is losing again.
Pennington gets put in over Vinny. They end up 2-5. Herm Edwards gives one of the all time great meme post game pressers ever and they go on a crazy run, making it to 7-6 before a heartbreaking loss to CHicago. At 7-7 with multiple team well ahead of them for the last two weeks of the season they have basically no path to the playoffs. Until....they beat the hell out of the Pats, several other teams lose and it makes it so that the Jets somehow have a miracle shot at winning the whole division or getting the 6 seed. Miami losing to NE puts the division in the Jets hands with a win.
Unfortunately Miami is winning with barely any time left. Only for Brady to lead NE to a game tying FG and sending it to OT. You can see at about 17:56 the outcome of that game. NE wins. The Jets now can clinch the division and the stadium loses its mind.
The Packers, currently the 1 seed in the NFC playing for home field advantage get DESTROYED by the Jets. The Pats the previous week got destroyed by the Jets and when they meet Manning and the Colts in the POs they give them one of the all time biggest beatdowns ever 41-0. It's a streak of games against top teams unlike anything the Jets franchise has ever seen.
They'd lose to Oakland unfortunately the next game but it's one hell of a story for a hard luck, loser franchise.
So naturally Pennington destroys his shoulder in 03 in a pre season game just like how Vinny destroyed his achilles in a pre season game. Bc the Jets can never, ever be allowed to have anything nice for long. There's also the hilarious game where Pennington gets injured and his replacement Jay Fiedler goes down 2 plays later. (I think they draft all time draft bust Vernon Gholston after this season)
There's the amazing comeback win against SD with kaeding missing multiple game winners....only to lose to the steelers when Doug Brien misses multiple game winners. The jets draft a K in the 2nd round after that LOL. His first ever kick attempt he slips on his ass and misses badly. The Jets did not re-sign him LOL
Then there's the Favre season where they're 8-3 but Brett hurts his bicep and they lose to miss the POs. He quits. Rex comes in and if Brett had stayed they'd have won a fuckin super bowl. Instead we got Sanchez and STILL made two AFC champ games. Only for it to get buttfumbled.
We have the great Fitzpatrick season...where they lose to nothing to play for Buffalo and miss the POs...
And outside of that it's been nothing but misery, misery so extraordinary that their top talent fights tooth and nail to get off the team (adams)...misery so strong that even WINNING hurts...like the now infamous STL win that fucked them out of Lawrence.
So yea...pretty fuckin great 02 season...

If Brett Favre would've have just calmed down more, or took it easy on the ego, whatever it was, and stop trying to put so much mustard on every pass he would have completed a lot more...which is scary considering he retired with the most passing yards ever! I think bc of where he came from, 2nd round pick, backup QB who only got his job bc the starter (Don the "Magic-Man") got hurt, he had that chip on his should that they always talk about, felt he always had something to prove. "Look at my big arm! I can do that, how many other guys can do that??" And it worked against him sometimes. Didn't always have to show off that strength, many times unnecessary. That being said, OMG that first TD pass to Terry Glenn was a thing of beauty! There have probably only been, amongst QBs who have started a good amount of games in the NFL, maybe 10, maybe only 5 guys in the history of the NFL who could complete that throw. It's hilarious thinking of Chad Pennington trying to even attempt that...not in his wildest dreams could he pull that off! And I love me some Chad P, don't get me wrong...but this game probably featured the greatest disparity of arm-strength between competing QBs in the history of the NFL!
Then again, how did Pennington complete that pass at 1:16:38?! That had almost no zip on it but it nonetheless is perfect, squeezed in between about 4 defenders right down the deep middle where someone with that weak an arm shouldn't be able to go. Dude def had some of his own magic, even Dick Enberg seems almost at a loss for words to describe his "...uncanny accuracy..."

His arm was diminished after an injury he used to be able to rip it. He was good enough to get by however never got to that plateau. Though he had a case for MVP in 2008, when Peyton Manning had a terrible start to the season but still won MVP.

This Pennington was good. The Pennington after that, not so much. Herm Edwards was a no-nonsense coach, who demanded discipline, professionalism and accountability. I know this because it all started with his tirade of, “You play to win the game. You don’t play to just play it.”
