  • John Byrne is one of my favorite comic book creators in history. Alpha Flight is on of my favorite comics. I always loved the quirkiness and odd team dynamic. I was really sad when Byrne ended his run of Marvel Comics’ premiere Canadian Super Hero team that Byrne himself created. With Byrne recently introducing the team in his X-men Elsewhen fan fiction- I thought it would be a fun time to revisit some early issues of Alpha Flight. Please join me for a look inside.

His run on this series was so great.
Yeah, I was very surprised when I read he didn't want to do the series.
But I'm glad Byrne did it, he's synonymous with the team, and they're both Canadians.
I agree, story and art was just so good on the Byrne issues.

It pretty much needed for me after he left. Even though I hung in there for dear life. Lol

Absolutely love this book and Byrne! I have the omnibus of his run and read it over and over. Amazing how much joy I get from this and he didn't even want to do it! He's also said he wishes he'd never done his Superman run either! That run is just so AWESOME, IMO! I'm super happy he did these books even if he isn't because, well, because they're AMAZING!! P.S. I also love it when Byrne inks his own stuff except for a few things he did in the mid-80's/ early 90's where he was experimenting with different inking styles--Lab Rats comes to mind as one where I didn't like his inks. But, it's still Byrne, so I still LOVE it!!

It is disappointing to hear things like his disdain for AF and the fact that he would have never done Superman but alas it is a joy for us. I’m sure the artist and his art is always a complicated relationship.

Oh, thank you for doing this. I believe Alpha Flight was not only on of JB's finest but one of the best runs in all of comic books. It was just so great. JB always seems to come off as distant about his own creation but I loved it. WHen he left the book the nose dive was spectacular...but I did like they brought Sasquatech back as Wanda Langkowski but that was it. Book never recovered without John.

When Marrina slashed Puck, it made me instantly despise her. LOL! Even knowing the explanation didn't help me get over it, however unfair of me that may be. About the backgrounds thing, it's really unfair that Byrne gets knocked for that. Maybe something about how he draws or lays out panels made it more obvious when he didn't use a background, but I bet that if anyone compared his pages with other artists they'd see that most other artists also have many panels without backgrounds. And, no, coloring tricks and sketchy lines in place of actual backgrounds don't count in my book. I also think that when Byrne does backgrounds, he does such detailed and great backgrounds that the absence of them becomes more obvious than with other artists.

Lol. It was a dick move for Marrina. Lol. I agree people are just unnecessarily hard on him because he raised the bar on quality art so much.

His backgrounds in some panels, especially house decors, are just impeccable and very detailed. Then, Byrne throws in camera angles, in the same panels, and you can see what a master storyteller, he's become.
I've always thought of his panels with no backgrounds, as a way to emphasize the character, story, dialogue, and/or scene.
I've never thought of Byrne as lazy, because of no backgrounds, given the amount of work he produces. Especially, since a lot of his work are considered classics, influential, iconic, and highly praised.
And yeah, Puck was fan favorite. Marina gutting him was a shock in that storyline.

I agree. There’s a proper balance of negative space. I always found Byrne’s storytelling and use of backgrounds very effective.

His Alpha Flight run is absolutely wonderful! Even though he says it was never his favorite. 😃

Love these comics. This was for me the pinnacle of Byrne's career. I fondly recall discovering Alpha Flight via bagged comic book sets sold at a big discount store (like Target before there was Target) where I guess the publisher unloaded returned copies. You'd get 3 or 4 comics for the price of maybe 2. The downside was they were in tight plastic bags so you could only see the covers of the 2 issues facing out at front and back and take a risk on what would be jammed in the middle. I got maybe 6 or 8 Alpha Flight comics by Byrne that way. I then had to track down the missing issues. Still have the complete Byrne run. Still re-read them. One of my favorites of all time.
