Chad wanted to keep it as original as possible when he bought the car. Now he's chopped the roof down... chopped the hood out, swapped the motor out & swapped the headlights. He swapped the wheels & lowered it, I don't know what he will do to it next but it's no longer original as possible... so you can forget about that CHEAP club Rego. It's a modern-day hot rod now.

If it was me, and I have worked with my upholstery guy on custom work, I would give him a quick run down of what I wanted and my thoughts, and then shut up and listen to him and give him all the time he needed to think it through. Just a pleasant working relationship that way.

Since you are entertaining the idea of swapping the flathead motor out and installing a 265 chevy v8 you should be aware of a few things. The 265 will provide reliability and power. But the stock Ford drive train may not hold up under the increase in torque and horsepower. Also you will need to upgrade the brakes. Food for thought. I know you didn't ask for my opinion, but there it is.

Putting some rubber roof tape over those staples may stop the chaff. The staples may need paint to stop corrosion due to electrolysis . Aluminum and steel could react.

You have no idea on the history of this car..i have seen it. It was a pile of junk before the current owner and previous owner got it. The 3rd owner back put some parts on it off of another parts car and painted it in his backyard. This was somewhere in the 70’s early 80’s. Then it sat for a long time before being sold to the previous owner before chad. That guy also let it sit for about 20 years. Not much on the car is original and it certainly is not an original survivor

I’ve seen how to do this before! Using contact cement sprayed on the first layer should be a 1/4” scrim of foam hard foam not soft!!! This can be sanded smooth before the outside cover is glued on!
There is no way of keeping the bottom lip solid ! The material will pull on that thin overlap. It is an awful idea , plain and simple . White or black would look great, brown just adds to the drab doesn’t it ? The top doesn’t have to match the seat color, it can but it doesn’t have to.
Once you add foam and material to the outside, it will look like it's got an infection... all puffy and will look terrible. But keep learning grasshopper...
I have an idea, since you want to get rid of the louvres, I'd make panels with the same material as the top, a panel with snaps that attach it to the car.
Just some thoughts... should of had Floyd's input from the start, that way there is no back tracking, but that doesn't matter now. Listen to Floyd, he came in for a reason. I would suggest landau foam, that way it can be glued on and sanded (by hand) to shape and it doesn't absorb moisture, and then the material can be glued to the foam. Make the rear window frame (with round corners) that has a flange on it that it can set in place and fastened in to help hold the top material after the roof is covered. Then you can either paint the flange to match the material color or even paint it with your rattle can chrome?

I use sandable foam, and I use sunbrella material for the top. It comes in a 60-inch width and 30 colors. I would highly recommend it.

An oval back window can easily be made by gluing pieces into the corners to create the oval.

There is a special upholstering foam with calico backing so it can be stitched
The wood is a buck, you're 3/4 of the way to a formed metal roof. Just make the roof metal.

The building contractor in me says, wrap it with netting, stucco it and a color coat in brown. If you don’t like that, how about a 3 tab shingle?

Why couldn't you use a flexible edging strip to retain and protect the vinyl top and follow the bodyline and window..Mayhe Ali with screws or bronzed metal.
If you didn't want snaps you could put magnets in the edge of the cover for holding it to the edges
