So you agree the tones coming from the Zoom in this video are better than the Boss? I’ve been going back and forth between the two trying to decide which to purchase & was literally going to swing by Guitar Center in a little bit to pick up the Boss but did a little more looking online & after coming across this video I’m now thinking I want the Zoom! I didn’t like what I read about certain aspects of the Zoom looper compared with the Boss but I already own a stereo looper so no worries really there. & as cheesy as they sometimes sound- I really like having built-in drums like the Zoom has. & a big plus, being 37 years old & mostly used analog pedals on DIY built pedal boards so having the extra buttons on the Zoom for instant on/off seems very comfortable to me. On a different note, though- I bought a used Zoom MS-50G recently & while very impressed with some of the dreamy stereo delays and modeling, it had less to offer than I had thought it would. & I’m not impressed AT ALL by the octave effect, which is something I use often combined with delay & reverb. Any idea if there’s a different/better octave on the G3XN? If I was buying an analog one right now I’d grab the MXR Sub Machine I think it’s called- purple colored pedal with built in fuzz. I love Andy’s video of the pedal for Reverb.com Anyways let me know your thoughts!!
@@mikesfrends : I do not use a lot of effects - mostly reverb, delay, EQ and compression. I played the Boss for the past 3 years on EVERY gig I played with either my bluesrock or hardrockband - it serves both well. I also have a Helix LT in my teaching room which is of course superior but heavy to carry around. From my today's perspective the boss lacks a bit in the distorted amp-section. If you are looking for a superb Fender-like sound for blues you have to hear the "natural clean" from Boss which is an own creation in the GT - it sounds even better than most Fender amps I used to own. If you want better quality you have to pay more than these 200 bucks for the GT. My Zoom is right now used exclusively for my students.
@@ertanegemen : I don't own a Mooer Ge200 but recently bought a NUX MG-30 where the amp-modelling is better than on the GT-1 - the foot-pedal also features a switch where you have to use an external one on the GT-1.
Great comparison technique, thanks. You saved me from making a mistake. Even though I was hoping the Boss would sound better - just cause I like the look and layout of the unit itself - the Zoom kicks its ass for authentic tone... hands down. There's some funky EQ / compression thing going on with the Boss that makes it sound... well, mid-scooped and over-compressed.
The Zoon sounds like it was made to be in a mix and sounds more like the real amps while the Boss sounds like they came up with those tones for someone playing alone where the sound is big but wouldn't really work as well in a mix
There is a lot of difference, I noticed that Zoom leaves the sound forward, a more present sound, and the Boss does not. But the two theme sound great and are very good to take anywhere.
As a G3xn owner, this video definitely proves I made the right choice between these two! The Zoom amp models and distortions sound much more organic vs. the Boss. Though I think the COSM brand of modeling has come a long way since I played with a Boss multi-effect unit many years ago.
Hello tappistrt. Does the G3xn sound equally good plugged into an amp without amp and cabinet sims enabled? What if one were to use it just as a pedal board plugged into one's guitar and amp without affecting the tone of the guitar and the sound of one's existing amp? I was thinking if both G3xn and GT-1 are about the same without amp sims ( GT-1 doesn't do quite well on this) , I might go with GT-1 since it has an audio interface.
I have both. zoom sounds more natural. And navigating presets is easier. Gt1 is smaller, it is an audio interface and acoustic sim is way more succesful. Also i like instant wah pedal at gt1 like most processors. It is wierd at zoom
All modern Boss multi-effects are sounding too much processed (HiFi like with extended bass etc.) - that won't work well in a band context - the Zoom is more mid-range focused - that works better (cuts through with less low-mid mud).
So i was pretty much sold on the Boss over the Zoom before i stumbled into this demo, which is by the way a great demo!! now i will have to rethink the whole thing. they both sound very good, the Zoom sounds fuller and closer to the real tones it's emulating
@@vanngir3180 Don’t know, I’m still very new to this. I’d break it down to what’s important to me. For example I don’t think the G3xn has usb recording (please confirm for yourself though). It's Zoom's amp modeling, it's pretty good. If you plug both pedals in a good cab, without mic simulation, they'll sound a little more similar. zoom is better using line because of the amp simulation,.
I actually was just comparing the two, almost bought both, but decided on the Zoom, because of a few factors, (both have good tones, and like you said, eq can make them almost exactly the same for quality), but I liked the zoom for the menu/gui programming, and style of how I would use it at gigs. But yep, agreed, both are good.
When you side by side anything it will show differences but each serve well to the purchase. Period. Knobs. That's their job. As far as the mid range pedal processors go these are both killer. I have the GT1 and use it mainly for the clean tone and that crazy awesome Flagelleto
Boss Cosm Effect is more advanced than Zoom...Create your own patch this is just the preset....You can have similar tone like analog pedal...It is based on your brain😎
Well done video but it sounds to me like the EQ out of the Boss is very heavy on the low end. Is this a preset issue which, if adjusted, would make a world of difference?
zoom all the way, both in terms of sound and usability. Boss are lucky Zoom don't make budget amps because if they did, Katana sales wouldn't be so high right now.

The boss GT 1 is also versatile. The effects can be assigned to the footswitch and if you buy additional footswitch it's very versatile. Also sounds very great
wow....all this does it sound exactly like the original stuff.. I worked at a music store for years..have played thru many a vintage amp...save for just a few..these modelers sound way better than the originals in most cases....more highs..lows...drive....etc... older amps often only sounded great..or even felt great while cranking them up to dangerous levels.. most are on the verge of blowing a speaker or power section while sounding their best... just purchase a product that you comprehend and like the general sound of... tweak that thing until your guts and back hurts...and then jam out...make huge monster unbeleivable guitar sounds..thats what their for..
I bought the Boss GT1 used but like new, off of eBay last year for $95.00. The only reason was because it runs off of batteries, because I had put together a small system with pa, looper, gutar amp, vocal harmonizer, and needed the multi effects pedal to complete it. It’s not a bad pedal at all! You can dial in some great tones and save them, and switch pretty easily through them in live performance. Definitely worth the $95.00!
Wish I could hear more cleans and 'traditional' playing eg with a stratocaster. Anyway u play great! Is d g3n more gigging friendly? I mean changing parameters if needed tiny tweaking?
Zoom is significantly better. The tone has more richness and depth, more “3D”. The Boss sounds fine. It isn’t terrible by any means. But given they’re both the same price, the Boss’s tone is years behind the zoom.
Saudações do Brasil. Obrigado.
Zoom - More realistic modeling, better drives. Boss - little more resources (USB interface, for example) and still sounds pretty good with a good amp. I got the zoom g3xn because I already own a good audio interface and also loved the amps.
I have a GT-1 some patches I made sound great some I just couldn't dial in right after trying all sorts of combinations. It starts to get a bit fizzy at times.
DeadRoman you've got good ears. Some folks can't hear it. I really wish Boss would fix that, as the over compression have been a problem going back at least to the GT-5, as far as I know.
It depends on the amp model to a degree... and what you're playing it through.. I have the GT1 in and the low end damping and sag change a lot depending on what type of amp I'm playing it through.. I get killer low and thump when I play it through either the clean channel of my Peavey valveking or my clean channel of my Marshall MG with the dampening switch on.
hey @ChoptonesOfficial really like your videos. Nice Editing and killer sound quality. GT1, G3Xn or GE200? Which one of these is your personal favourite?
Imho it is a matter of personal preference. Both kicks ass and delivers what is needed. Buy analog pedals if you want "real" sounds. I personally choose the gt1 over the g3xn. but Id have a hard time picking between gt1 and the g3xn's predecessor, the g3x.
I've sampled the boss gt-1000 and I've had several boss pedals over the years and the one thing I've noticed whith boss is it always sounds like a boss product
Boss always sounded like it had some stereo chorusing or phasing thing going on that was a bit artificial sounding. Also sounded bassy and mid scooped. Not sure if that can be tweaked out. The zoom sounds fantastic here, saw it for $240 here in Canada yesterday, what a great device for $240.
Very nice on a good PA system. Using Headphone sounds very bad. My last Line 6 FIREHAWK FX was two time better using headphones. I think you ll have about the same result using a GT 1 on a PA or HI FI than a GT 100. So not bad at all with good speakers or PA.
Boss sounds muffled and boxy to my ears. Zoom sounds fuller and more balanced. They [Zoom] retained the Air feature that is on older units which simulates a wide stereo sound. I have that on my Zoom PS02 and is my favorite feature of the emulating section. So happy they carried that over to add depth to your patches.
I never upgraded my Zoom G5 which I have had since June 2012. I XLR to the Tech 21 PE60 Power Engine. G5N does not XLR out. Plus, I don;t see anything the G5N can do for my needs. People tell me my Tech 21 sounds like a Marshall. I tell them it's the Zoom pedal doing all the work. Sure, I have tweaked patches many times, but it's reliable and functional, Live and in the Studio Because I play 2 to 4 times a week, I picked up a used Zoom G5 for my studio. The 4 FX visible for On & Off, I only use that in a quarter of the songs My 1/2/3 are setup as Clean / Crunch / High Gain, for about 15 sets. a bunch are song specific. On occasion, I also use higher wattage tube amps for big stage (Marshall & Peavey), and the G5 has 2 banks of 3 patches, with just FX. And the Lead Boost is KILLER, since it's all in the FX loop Check my channel for some of the live videos of cover songs. Some of the content may be reposts from Facebook which Sh!t's the audio quality. Some videos are using a Zoom Q3HD @ 24 bit audio
Actually we don't see how they really mix at the back of this short clip video.. They can make it which one of they like to be better sound. From my view almost all Boss series has a realistic distortion sound.
Both was recorded by mic??? It sounds like boss was directly recorded and zoom was recorded by amp-speaker-mic (because zoom can't be recorded directly)
You nailed it.... excellent video, you showed us the best out of both processors, thanks for taking time to make a video and upload for us..it was really helpful...I like both boss and zoom but had to choose only one according to the tone I am looking for and I chose boss over zoom...easy to use and tone can be edited using softwares....good luck for guitarists watching this video....cya
Excellent Video! This is the perfect way to demo and compare. I have a Zoom G3 along with other effects/software etc. Just picked up a Line 6 Pod Floor Plus used and probably going to get the G3XN. Tried a Boss GT 001 and still between the Zoom/Line 6 /Boss Line, the Zoom just has the better tone. The difficult part when I went through the units (didn't try the G3XN) but own a G3..my ears get tired. But watching a video and showing side by side comparison .. made my mind up. Thanks
Question: How different are the G5n emulations vs the G1xOn? I play the G1 and it does not sound anything like the G5n in this vieo....great job by the way on producing this video...
I love your reviews, but I want to ask which of these mutl-effect devices the most amp modelers, or which is "better" I am looking for a device where can I create my own pre sets. I am into classic rock, like AC/DC, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Stones, Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, that kind of thing. Do these devices have a USB port to download or edit patches? Which is easier to use? Sorry for the many questions
I bought the Boss because I dont like the extra pedals on the Zoom. But I cant stand the speaker sim on the Boss so I use a Redbox instead and it opens up the sound big time! I dont deal wit IR´s. I get option paralysis.
Reading the comments, there's an even split between the two. Even now, with all the processing power they have at their disposal, the hardest thing for multieffects to do is imitate a simple valve amp - who knew it would be so difficult? I think their mistake is to try and do it with digital modelling - because if you simply put an analogue overdrive pedal in front of these pedals it improves things a huge amount; suddenly it sounds much more real.
The OD DS section of the boss GT 1 sounds great. If you have an analogue overdrive like Tubscreemer,or BD2, turbo overdrive and OD 1,compare them to the one on GT 1 and you won't spot the difference. I don't need analogue drives with GT 1 dude especially the ones the GT 1 simulate. I don't really choose multifx based on UA-cam videos. I have a gt 1 and it sounds way better than this video
Zoom sounds better also the 3 screens you can 3 pedals in the chain and tweak them like a pedal with the real knobs below each screen, also if an amp like a Fender has built in effects like tremolo the equivalent amp model will have the effect as well and it can be tweaked like any other effect which is pretty cool. The noise reduction on the zoom is pretty good as well. Not all things boss do it for me although I love the rv-6, MT-2, BD-2, RC-1 and TU-3 but my katana is not feeling the love I definitely preferred valve amps have a Fender pro junior, Marshall origin and an Orange OR15 if I buy another amp it’ll be a Supro.
Been using Boss stompbox effects for years. Now im ooking for my first multi effects processor. Wanted to like the Boss better but i think i have to say the Zoom sounds better in this demo. You also have to take into consideration that the Zoom is double the price. $249 vs. $125. There's also many others out there that sounds great... choices choices choices.
nice review man, i still can't decide what to get from those two. but i'm leaning towards positive grid's jamup. can you make a comparison/demo for that?
I got myself a g5xn and couldn't be happier, the cab and amp models are amazing and modulation effects are great too.
Own both. The effects on the Boss are better while I prefer the amp-modelling from the Zoom.

Because I play 2 to 4 times a week, I picked up a used Zoom G5 for my studio.
The 4 FX visible for On & Off, I only use that in a quarter of the songs
My 1/2/3 are setup as Clean / Crunch / High Gain, for about 15 sets. a bunch are song specific.
On occasion, I also use higher wattage tube amps for big stage (Marshall & Peavey), and the G5 has 2 banks of 3 patches, with just FX. And the Lead Boost is KILLER, since it's all in the FX loop
Check my channel for some of the live videos of cover songs. Some of the content may be reposts from Facebook which Sh!t's the audio quality. Some videos are using a Zoom Q3HD @ 24 bit audio
yup
how about a comparison on mooer ge200 vs boss gt1
Zoom is a lot heavier on the rectifier. Can you please show us the settings? Thanks
Zoom. The Boss sounds too hissy. The Zoom has more tone & amp definition.
Just Great play!
Thank you sir! Don't forget to subscribe :)
sure!
Zoom hands down, overall better refined tone and pretty intuitive.
Zoom sounded better do to working with the mid range frequency better. Boss makes great effects..they just dont make good overdrive or distortions.
Actually we don't see how they really mix at the back of this short clip video.. They can make it which one of they like to be better sound.
From my view almost all Boss series has a realistic distortion sound.
I second that. I have a gt 1 and it sounds way better than this
Sold my g3xn,it only sounds good direct, but sucks in front of an amp ,unlike gt1 it sounds good direct and front an amp because it has an input select
Muito boa demonstração ja entra tocano😂😂👍👍👍 parabens👍👍
Both was recorded by mic???
It sounds like boss was directly recorded and zoom was recorded by amp-speaker-mic (because zoom can't be recorded directly)
Both has been recorded directly
"Because Zoom can't be recorded directly". WTF are you talking about?
@@ChopTonesOfficial how did you recorded it? The g3xn USB port does not support direct recording
Con cables.
sorry to jump in but how did you record the zoom g3xn directly via usb? @choptonesofficial
1:36 sweet sweet sound 80-90s grunge. How did you make that sound?
What is better zoom g3x o zoom g3xn?
Is there a drum computer integrated? Are there devices with bass accompaniments too?
Que timbre irmão 👏👏
Thanks
it was 6 mouth ago, but now i think both are different but good
Question: How different are the G5n emulations vs the G1xOn? I play the G1 and it does not sound anything like the G5n in this vieo....great job by the way on producing this video...
I love your reviews, but I want to ask which of these mutl-effect devices the most amp modelers, or which is "better" I am looking for a device where can I create my own pre sets. I am into classic rock, like AC/DC, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Stones, Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, that kind of thing. Do these devices have a USB port to download or edit patches? Which is easier to use? Sorry for the many questions
Boss GT-1 yes, Zoom no. For Zoom you have to go to the G5Xn series.
G3Xn wins hands down.
Does anyone know the name of this song or is it just his improvisation?
zoom was far better than the gt1. my opinion ☺️ but zoom and boss both are doing exceptionally well for music
Zoom not losing in mix. I made right choice
ZOOM......long way from the first zoom units.. sound great now
Been using Boss stompbox effects for years. Now im ooking for my first multi effects processor. Wanted to like the Boss better but i think i have to say the Zoom sounds better in this demo. You also have to take into consideration that the Zoom is double the price. $249 vs. $125. There's also many others out there that sounds great... choices choices choices.
In my market (Canada) they are identical in price. $299.
Zoom G6 vs Pod Go, please
Is it better than zoom G7.1?
ZOOM sounds more complex or lush, BOSS sounds articulate, but thin, sterile and compressed.
Does zoom g3xn do better in live??
nice review man, i still can't decide what to get from those two. but i'm leaning towards positive grid's jamup. can you make a comparison/demo for that?
A lot of PG stuff in this channel ;) Check it out!
ChoptonesOfficial if you bought only one what would you choose??
ZOOM G3n winner.
