Fun fact, they really did the self-flagellation on themselves and they liked it. Rammstein's statement: "There is something liberating about it". They talk about it in the Making Of video.
Self-flagellation being popular over centuries is not a coincidence. Even if you don't believe in God, there's an understanding that you have sinned and pain is a very tangible price for it.
There was a stunt co-ordinator in a room teaching them how to do that. I thought they were hitting themselves with something that wouldn't hurt but it did really hurt them.

@@gjallarnews140 A friend remarked that those into self flagellation or subs in the BDSM movement can't have much physical pain in their lives otherwise they wouldn't need it. I agreed as I was getting enough pain from frequent trips to the dentist and migraines at the time.
I know 'Rosenrot' is kind of regarded as a lesser Rammstein album but it still has a few bangers on it. And their videos are always next-level awesome.

The video portrays the band as travelling monks who have come to a small village. The main story of the video shows one of the monks (played by vocalist Till Lindemann) falling in love with one of the local girls, whom he meets during a feast. At her request, he enters her house and murders her parents. As he leaves the house, the girl briefly smiles at him before she alarms the villagers, who grab him and burn him at the stake. These scenes are intercut with the other monks, played by the other band's members, engaging in self-flagellation as an act of contrition. In the end, the remaining five monks leave the village.

The text himself told us that friendly looking people are not always friendly. You also can translate the sense of the words "Stille Wasser sind tief" as quite people have secrets which can be surprising others in the good or maybe in the bad. Bad like this girl as example in the video. Nobody know's who bad she really is.

Every since watching the making of for rosenrot, I see this video as from the skewed perspective of the monk. He thinks that the girl is making eyes at him, thinks that if he kills her parents that she'll be with him. Whereas it's all in his head. The reality scenes of their relationship are when they are walking together, when he's sleeping under her bed, then once she yells for the villagers catch him. Everything else is either in his head or is a dream (the rose scene while they are in bed.)
A possible reason for the group self-flagellation is that not only does Till's character have impure thoughts, but those thoughts are also assumed by the others-they conclude that he's up to no good. Priests are, in theory, meant to be pure in thought, word and deed so they self-flagellate as a penance. We don't know why the girl wants her parents to be killed, but Till just goes along with it to please her, or gain further access to her but of course the result is that he dies. This is a common theme within any of the videos produced by Zoran Bihac for Rammstein and Lindemann-Till must die!
The young woman just got married, that's why the clergy came here. Her fresh husband was also a targeted victim. If you know that in this region and time epoch the parents arranged the marriage of their daughters without their say and negotiated with the husband, then she already had a motive. What you can see is that in order to achieve her goals she actually walks over corpses and manipulates it purposefully with her means. The video is only the shell for a series of pictorial metaphors, like the lyrics.

The self flagellation with cat-o-nine's has a long tradition over centuries in the Christian church and has often nothing to do with real commited sins of the priests and nuns. It has a spiritual meaning. There is a whole Wikipedia article about it.

My recommendations from the Nîmes concert are "Reise Reise" "Asche zu Asche" "Morgenstern" "Stein um Stein" "Los" and "Stripped". And from the London concert would be "Sonne" and "Rein Raus" actually I've only seen 4 songs available online from London which are Sonne, Rein Raus, Ohne Dich and Feuer Frei...🥰🤗💕💕💕

There are two possible interpretations here. The first is that the girl seduces and manipulates the monk and makes him kill her parents because she wants to free herself from them.
The second is that the monk sees only what he wants to see all the time. He kills the girl's parents so that he has her to himself. Almost a stalker that goes to the extreme. However, in the end, the girl fights back and rushes the village at him.

@@RolandDeschain1 Yes other bands usually hire actors to play the weird roles while they play their instruments around them. The Red Hot Chili Peppers for example in the Zephyr Song, Aeroplane and Soul to Squeeze. The only one where they played the weird roles was in By The Way with Anthony being kidnapped by a taxi driver when he gets into his taxi and then John and Flea go on a car chase to rescue Anthony who manages to jump from the window of the taxi into the back seat of their car in one take. Then Chad gets into the taxi not knowing what had gone on before.

The other monks didn't do anything, but self flagellation is a common practice for extreme religious people, such as monks. The members from the catholic opus dei still do this regularly up to this day. They sleep on wooden boards and they wear some kind of spiked chain around their leg, or whip themselves. It's almost like a daily ritual. Crazy.

The video and the lyrics are not really related. All they have in common is the main topic of a young femme fatale whose lover is dying while doing something stupid to please her. "Ilda Ramirez" already gave an approximate translation in his/her comment, although - as it usually is the case - some things and subtlety are lost in it.
Self-flagellation is an old catholic thing.... secretly still practised in a few older communities of faith. In the video the flagellation is no fake! The band was trained by a female expert for catholic flagellation. And they did it in real !!!!
I wonder if she was an ex dominatrix or ex nun. I saw that German film about Martin Luther with the runaway nuns who had grown sick and tired of having to do that to themselves and wanted out of the nunnery. They joined his sect and didn't realise at the time he was starting Protestantism. I don't think he realised as well. He just wanted to priests to be able to marry, everybody to be able to read the Bible for themselves and read it in their own language and get rid of indulgences.
Christians alway are guildy, so the priest used the whip to hurt themselfs, that was an usual thing in former times. The priest or monks are from different christian churchs in this video, catholics, proteatants and orthodoxe etc.
