    Wow. I came to your channel for gut stuff and considering your FODMAP freedom course. I almost didn’t listen to this. It was really so good and relevant and very authentic and vulnerable. Thanks for sharing your story.

    Thank you for sharing this. It is really thoughtful and helpful in multiple ways. I appreciate you taking the time to share your reflections on the emotional/mental aspects of the decision. Glad you are doing better!

      Thank you for taking the time to comment! I'm so glad it was helpful in some way. You never know the vehicle insight will come in. Some days it might be a seemingly unrelated story like this one! 🥰

    Thanks for talking about the process. I'm the same age as you and my health is quite poor overall. So my fading hearing is really pretty low on my list of pain points, but the increase of "what, huh?"s are affecting my relationships a bit now, so I am expecting to need them eventually. I appreciated hearing the price and that it was a pretty big bump in your week's plans. That kind of stuff is so helpful when trying to plan for big health purchases.
    Also, MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS for getting to the point where you were able to go back to the ENT and face surgery again. That's huuuge! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
    My husband and I are both chronically ill and have had some good medical experiences but also some really bad experiences, and the bad ones can change your whole life. So bravo for persevering *and then pivoting.* That is so, so good! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

      Thank you so much! I'm grateful to say that I feel overall healthy and happy. But my "ear story" took more of a toll on me than I realized . I think it felt "normal" to me at the time because that was all I ever knew. But as I got into my late teens and early 20s I realized that 1. My ear story wasn't normal and 2. I bet it could have been prevented altogether if we only knew about pediatric chiropractic and the role of sugar and dairy. But, my parents and my healthcare team were just doing the best they could with the knowledge and tools they had at the time. So, I don't begrudge them or their decisions at all.
      Fwiw, the Costco Hearing Aid Center has been GREAT! And the price is a fraction of what the ENT would have been (3-6k for the pair, depending on which model you chose vs $1500 from Costco) 🤩

      @@gutmicrobiomequeen Wow, thanks for all that info! I appreciate it. I also really relate to that childhood part of your story. My parents really tried their very best, too. I'm thankful that there seems to be a widening of medical theories and availability these days, or maybe I'm just more aware of functional doctors and alternative kinds of medicine now that I've been through a lot of it. For all its limitations and pitfalls, I think the Internet has really been helpful in providing access to more helpful doctors and community support for the unusual cases like me. ♥️

    Thank you so much for sharing this! I have hereditary hearing loss and have worn hearing aids for about 20 years and two out of my three kids also wear them. We couldn't live without them. Don't get me started on the fact that insurance doesn't cover them most of the time!

    I remember being able to hear the birds after i got my hearing aids at age 44. Its so wonderful listening to the birds on walks. And I was also tired of missing out on conversations.

      I'm sorry to hear that. But, fwiw, the Costco Hearing Aid Center has been wonderful! The pair would have cost somewhere between 3k and 6k at the ENT (depending on the model I went with), but Costco was $1500.

    thank you so much for sharing this My 13 year old son has had similar issues and i've held off on getting the surgery to fix his perforation as I don't want to put him through yet another surgery and ultimately the hole kinda helps him hear better all that to say there are no right answers as you sort of implied he has one hearing aid and doesn't like wearing it and i always think it's because things just sound different which you are sort of validating as well definitely all a process wish they had better answers to the ear stuff for kids

      I have mixed feelings about the surgery. I'm glad I at least tried it again, but that's partially because it has about a 90% success rate in adults. So, I felt like that was worth the gamble. For children, the success rate is lower (I think 60-70%? But don't quote me on that), so I don't know if I would attempt it that young. My tympanoplasty surgeries were at 8 (I think), 12, 17, and 36. Now that I know about the higher failure rate in children, I probably wouldn't advise the two youngest ages at which I had the procedure done. But, that's just me.

    When you think that most people have earphones all the time and never listen to sounds around them. What a shame. Seems to me you look calmer. And it's true that we tend to look down on people with hearing aids 😔 Sure we care! I'm on a self care journey because I'm finally acknowledging I have had a gut problem for 2 decades that I need to accept & live with. The only way through is through, and it doesn't mean I'm doomed. Equally, I can stop looking for THE miracle cure. Thanks for sharing your story 💌

      You know what's crazy though- you'd NEVER know they're there! Even with my hair pulled back! You really can't see these at all unless I show you.

    That’s a disgrace that insurance doesn’t cover hearing aids. My dad, stepdad and several other people I know needed them and waited far too long to get them because of the expense.

    It's a little unfortunate, the way it happened 😓
    Regarding the situation with this surgery - is the "Reviving My Microbiome After Antibiotics" sequel coming soon?

    • @gutmicrobiomequeen
      @gutmicrobiomequeen  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, a sequel will definitely happen... Just not immediately.
      This turned into another self-compassion exercise for me, though. I was so excited to do my big prebiotic series and then the post-antibiotic series that I started doing things for the sake of the series rather than the sake of my own health. I've wanted to test out another probiotic or two for my mild constipation, but I had held off so I didn't skew the results. But more recently, I decided that my health was more important than my dorky UA-cam series 🥰 So I started playing with the probiotics.
      All that being said, I think I'm gonna tinker with the probiotics for a while longer. Then, I can take a break for 10-14 days, collect the stool samples, and resume the probiotics, if desired. It's not a perfect study situation (sure, I will have pooped out all the probiotics by then, but they will have surely modified the ecosystem on their way through) but that feels like a reasonable compromise to me 🙂

    Is the keto diet safe to do? And how does it affect the gut?

    • @Soilfoodwebwarrior
      @Soilfoodwebwarrior 2 місяці тому +2

      No I did a high fat low carb diet very strictly for over 13 years. They did not call it keto and it wasn't a trendy thing when I started. High fat diets will kill your bifido microbes, starve your cells of its preferred fuel source, and any short term symptom reduction you get from keto is outweighed by the long term issues. Fortunately the answers you seek are in one place but unfortunately the solution takes hard work. Dr Garrett Smith The nutrition detective on youtube has the receipts.

    • @gutmicrobiomequeen
      @gutmicrobiomequeen  2 місяці тому +1

      "Safe" can mean so many different things. For one, that is going to be influenced by the WAY you implement a diet. A lot of people "do keto" but are eating way too much dairy and using "fat bombs" and other shortcuts all day every day. On the other hand, there are people doing a better version of keto (more fiber, more plant diversity, more whole foods, fewer shortcuts), but that takes way more time and effort. I'm not a huge fan of keto, but I think it has a time and a place when done right.
      Here are two podcast episodes that may help:
      - The Keto Episode: ua-cam.com/video/NnvlUQ986V4/v-deo.htmlsi=hin6H8cq3Q7R2isb (please pardon the lousy audio quality!)
      - Misunderstood insulin: ua-cam.com/video/c7iFyD2meWE/v-deo.htmlsi=cL7JX0K5quFlyQPA (much better audio in season 2 :))

    I also had a lot of ear infections up til the age of approximately 7 and have hearing loss. I don't tolerate dairy but I didn't know that until the age of 20. I am very gluten sensitive and I just learned that you have celiac.
    I have heard that gluten problems cause people to have dairy problems.
    The common thread here seems to be gluten sensitivity, dairy sensitivity and hearing loss.
    Do you know if there is a real connection?
