China might be the future in America, where there are mostly amateur players playing on amateur-made instruments. In Europe-the birth place of classical culture and cultural development-such instruments are rarely used, even in the amateur world. In Europe, I can find a beautiful 19th Century German Cello for the price of a Jay Haide. The market is ruled by demand and North America has a different kind of demand.

Hi! Do you have any specific places you could reference? I am wanting to go to Europe and buy my cello there once the quarantine is over!

@cellopra can you recommend a country or specific store to look for such a spectacular find (or something similar)?

What was the name of the shop made trade cello that you mentioned? How can I buy one? I want to add my open tail piece, strings, and shape my own bridge.

It is his shop or if it is trade cello, then you can find those anywhere in the world at reputable luthiers

I live in China. My rental Cello at school is created here in China. I am a beginner cellist.

Perhaps a cello that has greater history may create a different resonance?

Maybe sometime you could do some more of your #Sacred Sundays again. I love when you play and teach how to play the old hymns.

Dude, it’s a bit inappropriate to say that China is the future in front of Edgar bearing mind he has a high quality shop in Cremona which cannot possibly compete

China is today and is tomorrow, you just don't even know it. The biggest music convention is Beijing, not Musikmesse or N.A.M.M. As for our culture, luthiers need to be downstream and well-positioned to accept new buyers coming from Amazon bought cellos. My student bought a Scale Perfetta from Edgar, but it is actaully his third instrument: the first was a laminate online cello and the 2nd a Chinese trade cello. Luthiers know that China is a large player in the sustainability of their shops, even though the hate to admit it. So, yeah, Chinese craftsmanship has been fueling our industry for at least 30 years, and will only be more impactful in the future. Hence, absolutely, China is the Future!

well it kind of is, the common cellist, is beginning/intermediate, and most can't afford the hand-carved fully ones, a lucky, brand new unknown luthier, might sell their first cello for 8-10k, but once they make a name for themselves, the hand-carved at the cheapest will be expensive
shop cellos, while between 4-8k, offer a solid instrument. most cant afford
