Your Friend in Cello ~ Jonathan
I have been forming a relationship with my shop cello for four years now. It is a rental and I am now considering purchasing it outright. Yes, it is a "beginner's" cello but it has an incredible tone response that even my teacher has commented on over the past year. The intonation is bright and warm, yet does not have any wolf tones when played fortissimo or above.
Mr. Humphries, I have enjoyed your video series and coupled with the hands-on lessons from my Cello Teacher, I have improved my ability to play the instrument tremendously! THANK YOU!
You are very welcome, Troy. It warms my heart to read you have a healthy relationship with your luthier. Those shoppes are integral to our lives as cello players. And you seem to have figured out how to use the channel: it is here to supplement your "hands-on" lessons, not replace your teacher. Bravo to you, Troy! (PINNED!!)
You are thinking wrong.
Wolf tones are more of a sign of high quality, because it appeals to the overtones. You need a strong-sounding instrument fpr wolf tones.
The best instruments have wolf tones. For example, loook Raphaela Gromes, the great cellist, her cello is wonderful and cost many 100 000.- Dollars. In minute 1:30 you can see the wolf killer.;-)

Hello! Thank you so much for your videos, they are so so helpful to me as a beginner adult. I purchased the enrico beginner cello from my local luthier and string shop in Brisbane. I had no idea what I was doing so I had the assistant play all of the beginner cellos for me and chose the one that I loved the sound of most. My cello is dark with the ebony fretboard, I trust that the shop only had quality beginner packages. I love it. This is the best thing I have ever attempted to do, such a challenge. So thank you again for your wonderful videos. ❤️❤️❤️
Welcome to the journey, Mary!
Mary, I've just bought the same cello today from a luthier in Adelaide. How have you found yours over the last year?
Thank you for the informative, educational, slightly humor and playful share. These videos are enjoyable to watch. Be well.
Much obliged, Mr. Christopher. I try to keep things light :-p
These are great cellos for any beginner, yet there is a caveat. This is a NEW cello, so it will require time to be "broken in". Even though the Amazon Black cello lacked the dynamic range as this trade cello, it has been played for years more and so it is easier to play. In time, this trade cello will sound much better.
I enjoyed your demonstration and loving attitude. Introducing a young student to the world of music begins a lifelong journey filled with challenge and comfort. Carry on.
Thank you, John Shrader.
Thank you so much for your review and demonstration. I am 44 years old and have decided to begin cello lessons. I have purchased a beginner cello made in China and will be taking it to a local luthier this week, before taking my first lesson next week. I am excited to begin this journey! I will continue to follow your videos as I progress. Thank you.
Anytime, Michelle
Did you make progress?
I am starting my cello journey on a Chinese cello imported by my teacher. It came with a plastic tail piece and what I think are rosewood pegs. The instrument came with a bow and a bridge and factory strings. I just played it for the lessons and practiced for hours on it till my arm and back got tired. I always thought it sounded not too bright. When I broke the C string and got branded strings..well the cello sounded like a totally different instrument. My teacher told me the cello would eventually “open up” and release its real sound. I have absolutley nonidea, I just want to learn how to play it. When it is resting on its stand I just stare at it and admire the nice graining amd take joy in just plucking or holding it when I grow too tired. I totally understand Jonathan when he says the instrument imprints itself on you. I love his take on the cello journey.
Love this story. You cello is your companion while travelling along the beginning of your journey. Incremental improvements over time will make the instrument's playability improve, while your technique will pull more from the sound hidden inside the cello. Welcome to the Journey of Discovery!
Have been playing on my Chinese cello for the last 12 years and it has been my one lasting love. Just got it repaired at the luthier because of a cracked seam and after that slight separation I think it sounds even better. My cello has been my friend all the way from Bachs minuets in the suzuki books 12 years ago to Elgar's cello concerto that I am currently slugging through.
I have a 2008 Ming Jiang Zhu. I think it sounds wonderful, and when I went to cello choir rehearsal with my friend, her teacher loved it...grabbed it and played and played. It is a Montagnana model, has a warm sound, and blends well in quartet and orchestra. It had been traded in to the shop where I found it and they did not know what it was so it was a very good and lucky find. I was able to get a very nice written appraisal from the shop that originally sold it. The label is a scroll drawing, no words, and a reproduction Montagnana label. Ming Jiang Zhu won several gold and silver medals for tone at VSA, but sadly has passed away since my instrument was made. His shop continues.
Love stories like yours, MelloCello! Your cello sound just like one I fell in love with in San Jose, California, at a shoppe called Kamimoto. Jian Li had a Ming "version Montagnana" since 2008-2009, with a Stahlhammer endpin (I asked Jian to put it on when I was shopping for cellos back in 2011). Every summer, I visit the shop and ask about that Ming. Oh, the sound was most warm! So, I decided when I can afford it, I would buy that Ming. I love the varnish, the purfling, the deep colours and of course, that fat fat ass! If that cello was sold then traded and finally found a home with you, then sit me down and call me Susan - what a small world we live in! I can't remember exactly the price at Kamimoto, but I was ready to drop 10KUS$ on that cello. So please, do share more about your cello?
Jonathan, what a fun and unexpected reply! Thank you. My Ming is not the Ming of your dreams. It was originally bought near Long Beach, California, and played by a girl whose family traded it for a more expensive cello at Robert Cauer in Hollywood, which is where I bought it. Mine is not benchmade by Ming himself. Perhaps the one you fell in love with was. But still, it is quite good I think, and what I love about your videos where you demo inexpensive instruments is that we all see, it is the cellist, not the cello, that makes a beautiful sound. People need not worry about not affording an expensive instrument when we hear how beautifully you play on a student cello. Bravo, and thank you! Love your videos!
I've had my cello for about 2 1/2years after starting to play on an instrument I was lucky enough to borrow from a school teacher when I was 15. I originally bought my cello intending to part exchange it for a more 'advanced' one as I progressed, but I fell in love with it and am amazed by how powerful and beautiful it sounds, although it was the cheapest model the luthier sold. My teacher agrees it's a brilliant cello (it has an unusually dark colour that I adore), and after getting some new strings recently it's had a new lease of life and I hope I can continue to progress with it for many years
This is actually what I did! I did a rent to own! I have a very nice china cello these days. It came with helicore strings! I love to play everyday! Thank you for your videos! I get great joy from them!
Good for you, Paul
Great video! I just got one of these Cellos and I'm really happy with it!
It's really cool to see people talking about the Luthiers' side of the story. Many people don't seem to appreciate what those guys do and without them, there'd be no instruments for us to play!
perfect perspective Eloisio
True!! I got mine directly from a workshop in China for $220 + $60 shipping +taxes(varies, in my case, i didn't have to pay any). a complete cello outfit, a bow, a soft case, and a rosin (I would give them away, it's not worth using it). it was their company's mid-range cello, so at first, I'm not expecting it to be that great quality for the price. when I received it, I was amazed. the top is made of solid spruce, but I'm not sure if the back and ribs are made of SOLID maple. it has real purflings, ebony pegs, but im not sure if the fingerboard is real ebony; and a plastic tailpiece (that I would replace them w/ ebony sooner), the endpin is not of a good quality though. I brought it to a strings specialty store (he could set up violins, violas, and cellos), to have the bridge cut, because the action is too high for me; and to also have the soundpost adjusted.
estimated appraisal is $600+ if sold in my country.
Abram Patrick Abesamis Hi, what’s the name of that workshop please?
I am just starting my journey here at 52 years young! I can't wait to get started
Hope all is going well
Hey Jon, love your work! Please keep it up. Could it be that the link to musescore is missing "Binary Sunset" which you are playing aournd 5:30 ?
Thanks Jon. So any arrangements under authorship are not allowed on MuseScore any longer. Disney owns all the LucasArts IP, so their algos have cleaned the internet of any unlicensed works.
I started out with a Jay Haide Stradivarus chinese wood cello. Wa absolutely fantastic then quite by accident upgraded to another Jay Haide but one of their Vuillaume Stradivarius copies with European wood and it's amazing.
Thank you for this video. Your playing is beautiful.
i started with a rented cello from my school (had a string orchestra class in grade 5 and 6), once i grew big enough to use a 4/4 cello i got one of those china made cellos through my teacher (his recommendation), and i've been playing on that very same china cello for 8 years now, and yes, i'm kinda attached to it, although a new set of string would be appropriate by now 😅
Probably a good thing. Glad you found a cello you can depend on!
Some Luthiers in Germany buy them, and they make changes on the instruments, they dismantle the cello completely and even change parts. After that they sell them brand new and "updated". They sound beautifully after that.
🎻💞
I have a deutch and really good luthiers have worked on it and i have larson strings it sounds wonderful for a cello in my price range
I have mine coming in on April 3 Iam so much looking forward to it
and how has it been?
I am just considering beginning my cello/music journey and am about to purchase my first instrument... bit daunting as an adult but I'm looking forward to it. I really like the Jay Haide cello's and I think they fall into the Chinese shop cello you have played...
Jay-Haide are trade cellos from China, yes. They are the "shoppe brand" of Ifshin Violins in El Cerrito, CA. Their schtick is a Jay-Haide cello is a more "premium" cello brand, claimed to be "recognised world-wide". After some research, I can attest that both are at least somewhat true. Yes, the marque is of high standards, from good constructors in Guangzhou, but it is not entirely a "globally recognised brand".
The truth is EVERY shoppe has a trade cello from China, either sourced directly from the constructors (like Ifshin Violins) or via a distributor. These instruments are the "bread and butter" of luthiers world-wide, providing much needed margins as well as (and much more importantly) revenues from recurring repairs. Whether it is a sound post adjustment, bridge replacement or hole reparation, the labor costs are the same for cellos from 1 000 to hundreds of thousands.
@@CelloCoach beginning my music journey as an adult it's all a bit daunting but I've found a shop that will let me have a lesson on a couple of different cellos before I make the big purchase and I really like the sound from the Jay Haide a lot more than the Gliga's I've been shown. Thanks!
I love my Krutz 300 student level cello from KC Strings. Krutz makes a surprisingly large variety of student cellos - just as you describe, made in their shop in China and finished in the US luthier’s shop. As a beginner student at 63, there is a distinct possibility that this Krutz 300 may be my final cello, and I am fine with that.
I will be with you soon, for my cello story will change and a new cello will join my journey
This was so handy I had no idea where I could go to get advice and by a cello and now I watched this I managed to find a luthier in my home town :) can't wait to get my first cello! what price would you advice to spend on a beginners electric cello? x
Happy you found a luthier! As for an electric cello, 300-500US$ is the range.
Ordered a Chinese cello. 1st I was sent a cello that arrived damaged ( the spruce top was cracked and split from end pin to neck along the sound post. Two more simular splits on the back as well) the luthier was kind enough to replace it free of charge and even allowed me to keep the broken one also free of charge because it was considered non-repairable. As I waited for the new cello to arrive, I called around to other luthiers. All of which confirmed the broken cello was non-repairable and they said I shouldnt waste my money on repairs to a Chinese cello. But looking at the broken instrument, I couldn't help but notice how beautifuly it was crafted. I couldn't stand the thought that someones hard work is now trash. Realizing I had nothing to lose, I decided to epoxy the splits. Having no luthier experience, I open the cello and repaired the cracks and splits. When I was finished putting it back together, it wasn't pretty but it was playable. I was surprised at how well it sounded. Then my new replacement arrived and I was blown away that even though the two cellos we're identical, the broken cello actually sounded better then the new one. Long story short, the Chinese cellos I own sound amazing. I should mention that the price range was $1500. But this brings up a question. Does a broken but repaired cello sound better?
Sometimes I can and sometimes it cannot. For repairs, the quality of sound directly correlates with the craftsmanship of your luthier.
Jonathan, I just got my new cello today and I have to put it together and I haven't got a clue what I'm doing.
Great video! There really are excellent and affordable instruments coming out of China these days, it's actually something my Luthier and I were talking about last time I was there. I bought my first cello 20 years ago when I finished high school and at that time he only had cellos of this quality that were made somewhere in Europe (and at a far higher price!) This is truly great info for a beginner looking for a quality instrument for a decent price and unsure of what to look for.
Thank you for the great info
The chinese cello looked and sounded beautiful.
Thanks for posting.
This is great. I have a cello that was vandalised and whose belly is slowly sinking. I need a new cello, after 44 years with the same cello! I feel like a traitor but its got to be done. Now I have some information to help me choose. Thank you so much.
I'd restore rather than buy a new one tbh
I bought a 4/4 Yinfente 5 string cello and it is wonderful. I've had to adapt a wider bridge, put new strings on, but other than that it has a wonderful tone. Got it on Amazon for $400. Ebony fittings all around. I've been playing the cello for 0ver 50 years (since I was 10) and I have played a number of instruments. The tone with Helicore strings is clear and bright, and the bass strings are resonant and rich.
I just read you review on Amazon! Very cool!! Here's a little secret for you (and anyone else reading this response) : my Italian/Austrian luthier Edgar Russ makes 5 string cellos! I will be visiting him again next month in Cremona and playing this 2nd 5 string. We will have to discuss this your yinfente! So so cool you have found one!
@@CelloCoach Sure, just give me a shout.
Do they use rosewood for the finger board instead or ebony? Mine is cheap and was painted. I sanded it off because I thought it looks better, but underneath it looked like rosewood. I'm just guessing. I don't know for sure. It just looks awfully similar to my Ibenez. It's a darker wood with very fine grains, but not quite as dark as the one shown in this video.
Without being there (also I am not expert in woods) the presumption is only your fingerboard is not ebony. A hard wood of some sort, yes. Like to find out the answer, so would you take it to a luthier?
Yr great ! You are right
Im in love with my chinese cello
good
As a cellist of 40 years, I can immediately tell that this is NOT your $300 online cello shaped object, but more like my $1500-1800 Chinese cello I loan to my students. The link to your luthier didn't work.
"cello shaped object" LOL Yes, it is about the same value, too. As for the links, all of them work. Edgar in Italy or Jian Lee in USA both work fine.
Jonathan Humphries ty. I can't open the Edgar link, but will try the other one. BTW, my loaner cello is amazing!
Jen Langfeld Please check again. It was offline due to GDPR, but has been live since I first replied.
whats your thoughts on the allasndra venezia?
May be you would like to make another talk about tolerance of cello parts and assembling precise . MTKS.
Yes, this is a great idea! It's in the queue!
Thank you i like the way you explain what to do, but i want to buy not to rent and mostly in my price range it will be Chinese cello, are the review on UA-cam reliable, sometime they all agree on one , are thoses recommandations reliable….TY Frank
You are welcome, Frank.
Very nice sound!
Yes!!!!
Nice video.! My name is Luis, iam 53 and started studing cello 7 years ago.... I bought an Antonius chinese cello 7 years ago in Cancun (not bad at all) but the only detail (big) with it is the fingerboard is painted in black and I hate it.. Jeje. I live now in the City of Mérida, México. Can you give me a tip of how to get a cello like the one on this video??? Thanks a lot.
Hello Luis. Perform a Google service for "luthier violon" in your area. These are trade cellos, and easy to find worldwide.
I have never played music in my life, can't read it, etc. But, I've always been interested in cello, and it is a life goal for me to learn it. I'm not wanting to learn it for money, to be in an orchestra, or anything like that. I feel like it will be a good stress reliever. I just don't know where to start!! And i'm afraid my Carpal Tunnel may not let me. Any advice?
This is a good question I will answer in my next Cello Coach Talk.
Reading music is quite easy, im sure you could find youtube videos on it. Knowing the circle of 5ths would help.
As for the carpel tunnel...a thinner neck may be beneficial?
Hi Jonathan your recommendation toward Yifente cello from China with mechanical pegs. Thanks in advanced. ALFONSO from Puerto Rico, USA
If the parts are all ebony, yes!
Hello, Jonathan would you be kind enough to tell me what cello is it or where to buy one of these cellos?
Hi JC. These cellos are available worldwide, online and in most every luthier. This is a "trade cello", meaning is is made to a certain level of quality and sold under a luthier's own store brand. Ak your local luthier!
People truly underestimate these cellos, majority of college students are using them their first few years of music conservatory and is a great cello for all levels of cellos
It is next to your heart ❤️ ✨
Yay
I need a cello for a beginner, where can I buy it?
My teacher is on a first name basis with his luther, so of course he will always recommend him to his students.
That's how I got to rent my cello :)
It is an expensive hobby, but for me it is worth every euro.
Yes, but this cello you have is far from any hobby, it is high art. Both playing and making cellos is a life long passion for millions of people, a far cry from scrapbooking or collecting stamps.
@@CelloCoach Sadly I neither have the Time, nor talent for this to be more than a hobby. But I admire those who were able to make a career out of what they love.
I love the sound of the cello. That is why I wanted to learn it for years now. Now that I earn my own money I am finally able to afford it. Even though I don't earn a lot, I just had to fulfill my dream :) I didn't mean to sound degrading. English isn't my first language so I'm sorry if it sounded wrong.
No worries, Bookdragon. It is nice to have anyone play our instrument, and reading you comment reminds me to not take these blessings for granted. I too was just like you, struggling to buy a cello, so I do empathize ;-)
I have a chinese cello (Stentor cost about $800 in australian dollors) and I just had my first Lesson and my teacher said that my cello bridge is half a centimeater higer than his cello (cost about $6,000 in australian dollors) do you think it's a major problem?
5mm is a distance and you will benefit from a lower bridge. Take your cello to a reputable luthier and have them lower it. Should not be expensive
Hi I have just noticed your comment about the bridge height, I work for the company in question (uk) all our instruments are made at our own factory in China and when they are sent to the shops for sale to the public it is with the understanding that some adjustments and setting up will be required 😁( normally by the shops)
Where to buy this instrument?
Any thoughts on chinese brands? Im looking at buying soon, and chinese cellos really are affordable but...buying online is a bit scary! I would hate to drop a grand and end up with a CSO.
Hi, did you eventually get a safe buyer in China? Please share where you bought?
@khosiedladla9348 no, I purchased something local that required some repair but ended up being a wonderful cello.
The second day I owned my cheap Chinese cello I must have channeled the technique of a much better player and it felt like my arms were moving by themselves and it sounded really really good. It was sort of a Mix between Apocalyptica and hillbilly hoedown. The adrenaline you get from such an instance was like dancing with your lover
Kindly from which Chinese company did you buy urs frm??
I realize this comment is two years late but I got my cello from eBay and it doesn’t have a brand. The first thing I did was carved a bridge and made a bow from some Brazilian Ipe would that was discarded from work. As a carpenter, I get a lot of high-quality wood scraps. I changed the strings to some medium quality kind and got some nice rosin. I had to learn how and practice making my bow and I got a real nice one after about a dozen attempts. Now I’m studying how to make a cello so I can customize it to my preference. I realize this is the hard way of doing it but what I lack in finances I make up for in determination. I hope you have your dream cello by now.
how much does it cost? Is $500 USD a good deal for a used one?
I am not a professional player, however, the student cello does not connect me for some reason. I get more attracted to more advanced handmade cello from Italy or Germany, I prefer some complexity and character in the cello, prefer the strad body with bright sound, prefer more responsive and easy to play, and I personally prefer Belgium bridge over the French one, with the strings I am not quite sure yet ( I guess may be Larsen for A &D and spiroco for G & C). However, it comes with a very expensive price tag. I do you suggests.
Since you know the difference between the two main bridge designs, you already have exhibited a deeper knowledge of cello than many others. And our discerning taste can be detrimental to our pocket books!
I just bought a Primavera 200 from Alan Gregory in Didsbury, Manchester. I think this is one of those China made cellos that yo are talking about. My luthier sold this to me with Larsen Crown strings and a nicely shaped bridge. I am very pleased, not only with the cello but also because I found a gentleman who knows a lot about cellos and is willing to pass on the things he knows, as and when I need the information. He has made me even more keen to renew my cello playing skills. Thanks Bob.
Glad you have a cello again, Christine!
Nice ! Can you tell me the price of a chinese cello like that ?
i live in egy and you are soo helpful but your ideas about instruments are soo expensive for a normal studend soo if you can make a video for a good or half good instru and not expensive
and thank you for all what you teach me ♡
Abdo Salah check out his review of the Cecilio. It won’t get any cheaper than that.
If you haven't already...pls make a video telling us why you think guys like Edgar Russ can ask $32,000 Euro for one made by him alone or one students or partner. Whereas if it's made by a team in China (Jay Haide) or Taiwan (Eastman Strings) they only ask About $2500 USD. Both do a lot of hand-work. out-source parts. And both hve their fans. Many happy with their Jay Haide...
Hello Jonathan
How are you? After thinking for a while I am going for cello.
Please share the link of trade cello from China. I want to purchase one if I can afford.
Thanks for great information.
Where do you live? (which country?)
@@CelloCoach India
These trade cellos are in all luthiers worldwide. Find one in your local luthier!
Hi I found strawberries reproduction models running in the price range of about 6-800 from China may I have your opinion on this please this is on eBay
It could be good or not - did you buy one?
Could you recommend some good China handmade cello brands please?
Most shops have a "trade cello" of various qualities at different price points. There are no singular "brands" from China because the cellos are made to order and bought in bulk at events like this music-china.hk.messefrankfurt.com/shanghai/en.html My counsel is to find a reputable luthier, then buy a cello from them after a rental period.
5:35 What name of the score?! ?!
"The Force" by John Williams
The cello speaks to me like no other instrument. But what can I do with it at 65, 20 or so years to learn?
practice and play for the love of music
Find a teacher and go for it! Adult beginners of any age often make more rapid progress than a typical child would. You could be playing in a community orchestra or other ensemble within a few years.
Theres women in her late 60s called adult cello learner whos fierce
Where do i get a cello like this?
At your luthier!
Please review dragon core cellos!!!
I bought a $500 cello from Mira Mesa, California. It was a 2001 Cremona SV 150 but the luthier put a bridge that was the lowest string height making chords easy to play and still high enough to play FFF without buzzing the fingerboard. Years later I went to a music shop in Long beach and played on a $30,000 copy of a Stradivarius. To my delight it was EXACTLY the same neck dimensions and string height.
I also visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York and looked at their Stradivarius collection which was missing a cello. The font through the f-hole was the same as the Cremona's.
Thank you for sharing your experience with trade cellos. Yes, they are good quality!
Hiw do you get one?
at your local luthier, it's a typical "shop brand"
Stradivarius reproductions from China selling on eBay for the price of 600 to 900 possible to get your opinion
It really depends. Sometimes you find a gem and at times you get stuck with a lump of coal. If the vendor allows for trials with money back, then go ahead. Best option for any trade cello - your local luthier
Crazy I've never found a rent to buy option I'm states :(
Taylore Red check all of the local music stores near you!
@@lioraartemis7486 trust me I have! Only ones that ever do arent real luthiers and are guitar stores selling 500$ cellos lol
Are all Cellos now made in China aside from Cellos's made by one craftsman e.g. from Cremona? :)
Jay Haide instruments I guess are also made in China.
yes, Jay Haide are made in china but not all trade cellos. Many are also from Romania too, like Calin Wultur.
How much will this cost.
This model is 1200€, without the bow or soft case. Same in USA, about 1400US$

Can you please send me a 1/4 size cello
At the moment, it is not possible, and when it does become a reality, one would have to do much more than just ask, Abdalmonim.
Ok
Its a personal choice on tone, but I definitely do not like this one. Its not bright enough and too muted a tone for my liking. Would love to see the back of the cello which you didn't show.
Does it come with the finger tape? Just kidding.
That's an extra charge jajaja
Hi love this comment on your cello
