From Insanely Baggy Pants To Skinny Jeans: The Evolution Of Hip Hop Fashion

  • Since it's inception way back in the 80s, Hip Hop has shared a symbiotic relationship with the fashion world. What started as a way to showcasing local trends and fashion staples has bloomed into a powerhouse influence of haberdashery over the years.
    Originally fashion in hip hop was merely a way to show fans that you had money and you were dope boy fresh, or to turn the world on to the your local sneaker of choice. But as rap grew in popularity, more and more civilians began to take notice of the stlyings of their fav rapper.

      @freckleheckler6311 4 роки тому

      Ya Boy Aang made it look good? It was already considered very fashionable. I don’t understand. The fashion brands from Europe and America were already in high demand From Gucci products from switzerland, Italy’s prada, Versace, Armani, Gucci, Germany’s Adidas, puma, Hugo Boss, Swiss luxury Watch brands especially Rolex, Americas Nike, North face, Calvin Klein, Tommy hilfiger Jeans and jean jackets coming from German immigrant Levi Strauss, leather jackets by Irving Schott, sneakers being introduced by Adi Dassler then forming Adidas, baseball caps, snapbacks, fedoras from England, flat caps from England, sweatshirts, hoodies, beanies, jackets, sweatpants baggy pants were worn amongst Prisoners due to no available belts, worn also by skateboarders and snowboarders, these things were already in popular demand. Black Americans have contributed to fashion but I think there’s way too much significance placed on it. Things like Grills, Durags, hairstyles (specifically black hair)

    I think Kayne West started the fitted clothes trend because he was beefing with 50 cent in the mainstream, it was Gangster rap vs Alternative rap. Also social media growing in the late 2000's with the smartphone along with the end of the music album in stores influenced the style changes. Also the Allen Iverson controversy that introduced the NBA dress code influenced the change of style because fashion was more diverse.

    Good video man! I was looking for a loose ( not baggy ) jeans for three years (!!) and i had to realise it is really hard to find it!
    All my old favourite brands just does not make loose pants anymore! What a shame! When i was living in London ( till 2012 ) i used to go to Carhartt outlet in Hackney to buy super cheap loose pants. In this time i bought about 15 pairs minimum :) So this 15 pair ( and all the others :) ) was last long for about 5-6 years. Thank god my weight have not changed much till i turned 35.
    But after that i wanted to buy again some new loose fit jeans and i just could not find any of them! I had to wait 3 years to find a store with old stock Levi's and Dickies pants ( in this time i didn't care about brand names i was happy to find some ). I was wearing " all in my life " ( since i was 14 in early-mid '90s ) baggy jeans till about 2008 but than ( because of my age :) ) i have changed to loose style. Now i am almost 40 yrs old and i think i will never have skinny pants on me for sure. I leave that for the young " fashion gays "...
    And if you say we are old yes we are ( only our body! ) but don't forget something : we are pioneers, we are from the era when everything was new and original! Our generation ( born circa 1970 - 1985 ) made everything ( in music, art, sport ) what the new generation copying today! We made our own fashion / style and not the designers told us what we must wear next year. When the " modern " streetwear / extreme sport " fashion " has really started in the '90s the style have not changed for about 10-15 years!
    I think this is what we can call ORIGINAL in todays consumer ( gay ) society ;) Respect for the few new ones who's trying to keep the old roots with some good new flavour and who is trying to push the boundaries ( in sport and art) but staying true to the origins! Big up!

      wearing clothes that fit makes you look proper not feminine. if anything sagging your baggy jeans are more feminine then wearing skinny jeans (jeans that actually fit) since in prison guys would sag their pants to tell other guys that they are DTF.

    • @azhqone
      @azhqone 6 років тому +5

      Daniel H hiphop had always been against the grain, but nowadays they look like girls or just like my (proper) next door neighbours.. (It just reflects the soft / poppy sound of nowschool hiphop). Same thing happened to the Punk-Rock culture. The point I’m making is that the 90s hiphop culture reflects the rawness in every aspect, the sound, the rougness, the flow and most def their clothes.
      It’s ok to sack your pants as long as you cover it with long shirts, not like sacking skinny jeans with short shirts above it, that doesn’t make any sense.

He used to stay on that(Ed Hardy) (Skull Gang)and when his song "ballin" dropped alot of people started to jump ship wit the long teez/jerseys. Wyane started that whole blur line wave with the skate stuff.. butThem Dipset niggas been trendsetters . Big Facts

    I love/ hate the styles of today. Love it for now you can create and be yourself and original, but hate because the hype beast has killed street wear and over saturated certain brands. I’m 32 and in high school I was definitely wore the baggy jeans and the tall t shirts I had no business in wearing. I look at back at my old high school style like that shit is ridiculous I look stupid as hell, but appreciate and still wear the classic white Air Force ones and the classic timbs

    These so called Mumble Rappers n their wack unoriginal genre called Trap destroyed hip hop n it's fashion they change how hip hop was seen n change what hip-hop represent hip hop no longer represent struggle, hardship,ghetto,hood,motivation,ganglife etc..It now represent richess,money,hoes,jewellery,money,intoxicated stuff...Dey really destroy Hip hop n their so called style "Trap" ain't even real Trap muzik dey just called it Trap by themselves without any official recognition nnnnn da real Trap Muzik is a genre about life in da Trap( place of drugs dealing n ganglife) n the real Trap Muzik rappers talk about life in da Trap the hardship of living in da hood the violence n about making money by selling dope)...The real Trap Muzik rappers are Gucci Mane,Jeezy n TiP etc these self calling Trapstar like migos,future,Lil Uzi vert etc never even live in da Trap n sell dope they didn't experience da hardship of hood life n dangers of the street life they came from medium class family background n went to school like others kids n later just enter the Rapgame they didn't struggle much for their success n didn't start from the bottom dey start from the middle...
