I bought a second hand 40hp 4 stroke that looked like the anodes were never changed. Is it too late to change them, can corrosion still be prevented by installing new ones asap?

Anodes can and should be changed throughout the ownership of the engine. While they may be deteriorated, they are likely still serving a purpose, and have been doing their job. Swapping them out with new ones will ensure that your engine stays protected for years to come. 👍

Per the operator's manual for the 40hp - 60hp engine family, the only anodes that require replacement as routine maintenance are located under the power trim/transom bracket assembly and on each side of the gear housing.
