If you are looking for some ideas on using your monoprints I have a little mini-series of videos you can watch: bit.ly/2BdX2A5 The first video is basic printing techniques then the rest are all projects using the prints!
Big thanks to @kreativekymona for the question and reminding me to link the series!
I'm new to gel plate printing and am watching hundreds of videos, but this is by far the most inspiring I've seen!
Thanks Jane, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I like bubble wrap, punchinella, kitchen shelf liner, homemade stamps with meat trays and sticky foam.
Love that!
The thin cardboard packaging that IKEA uses in their flat pack boxes is my current favourite. Peel off one layer of thin cardboard to reveal a chain link/chicken wire type pattern. They come in so many shapes and sizes which is great for all the various gel plate sizes. The plastic trays that sit in boxes of commercially sold macarons (versus fresh from a bakery) have two different textures, one for each side. They are different but coordinate beautifully. Also, the very thin plastic-ish papers that sit between layers of chocolates or cookies/biscuits are wonderful. Just carefully peel one piece of paper off to reveal the texture. Works best with thicker, slower drying paints or work quickly with thinner paints.
Ooo wonderful textures to try! Thanks Dawne and oh no! I will have to get some macarons now, what a shame 😂😂😂
Kim , feel free to eat a Pistachio or Hazelnut macaron for me. That will reduce the number you are eating for you :) Thank Goodness my friend only gifts me macarons at the holidays! I have 2 different brands now so all told 4 different mark makers.
Love them all 🥰
When you asked what we use for texture I mentally answered needlepoint canvas, rug canvas and plastic needlepoint canvas. And then you picked up the plastic canvas and used it! Another grid texture I love is a mesh fruit bag. I framed a piece with masking tape so it holds its shape and makes diagonal pattern that's distinct but also slightly irregular. Another piece of the bag is not framed so it can simply be draped over the plate for a more distorted mesh texture, and whatever of the bag is left over can be wadded and dabbed on the plate.
I love watching you work. Your style is distinctive and I always feel happy after watching your videos. You inspire me to roll up my sleeves and make art!
+Robin Alcorn LOL! That canvas works wonderfully doesn't it?! Oh I love your fruit bag suggestions, I used to use them in my art journal but I've not used them in ages. I'd completely forgotten about them! I will definitely try them on my gel plates, thank you for the tip! And I'm so glad you are enjoying my videos, and that they make you happy and ready to get into your art That makes me happy too! ✨💙💚
Loved the heart in this video. So many looks!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
Awesome I will be using this technique for my Valentine cards
Brilliant! Have fun with them!
I’ve watched a few of your videos this evening and had to comment and say you’re a very good teacher Kim..thank you
Ahh thank you so much. I am glad you have enjoyed them!
They are so pretty. I love my gel plates. Maybe since it has been grey and rainy all weekend, I'll break out the plates. TFS Kim. 💞
+Judy Daino it sounds just what you need to add some colour to the weekend! Have fun!
Love this!!
Thank you!
These are awesome pages! Inspires me to drag out the gelli plate and print some hearts!!! Thank you, Kim!
+Marsha Pitman excellent! Have fun with your hearts!
Oooh this is bloody darn awesome!
+Larissa Hageman 😀✨💙 glad you like it!
Fabulous.
+Catherine Peddel thank you 😘✨
Love it!
+Esther Chatz thank you!
great session and video! For patterns/mark making some of the things I've used are egg cartons (the bottom part), embossing folders (I cut cardstock to size and then emboss the card stock and use those until they are no longer useable) and of course you can just use textured/embossed paper if you don't have embossing folders, feathers, leaves, buttons, bits of lace, string, six pack rings/yokes (I find those when I'm out and about walking the dog, some people are grubs!).
Totally wonderful! Thank you for all your mark making suggestions. Egg cartons! Of course! I must give those a try! I do like using embossed cardstock too, it saves on getting the embossing folder dirty 😂
I picked up some extruded 'mini-foam pillow' placemats (like those non-skid rug pads) and also some silicone hot pads-- they come in several geometric patters, I like the honeycomb one, at the discount stores.
Thank you for the video, Kim. I love the techniques that you shared!
As someone who is new to gel printing and your channel, I especially appreciate that you share your supplies including the paper and paint nozzles. As I was watching your video, I found myself wondering where you found those super handy nozzles. Turns out, I didn't need to wonder any longer. 😊
Thank you for a very comprehensive video and details in comments. I was sure to like and subscribe. Looking forward to your future videos and catching up on what I've missed on your channel.
Best wishes,
Jen
Thank you Jen. I am glad you found it helpful and thanks for being here on my channel! Those nozzles have totally won my heart, I had to share 🤣 I'm glad you found the product listing useful too!
Thank you for inspiring me to get my gel plate back out again! LOVE your prints! 😊🔆💕

+Barb Owen - HowToGetCreative.com thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
Another great video Kim, perfect tutorial about layering with the gel plate just love all the ♥️’s x
Ahh thanks Ruth! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
You could use texture plates .... or cake decorating tools also... they are good on the gel plate surface and works great plus there are so many options!
Love all your videos Kim... you have a fan in the UAE
Ooo great suggestions! Thank you and thank you for watching too, I'm glad you have been enjoying them!
Love this so much. Tfs
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for some lovely ideas , I haven’t used my gelli plate for ages , must have a play ,,,,xxxx
+Anne Faint definitely Anne! Get that plate out and play 😀✨💙 Have a fun printing session!
Thanks, Kim! loved this video! :)
+Bev. Wilson thanks Bev! I'm glad!
You asked about fave mark-making tools. In addition to purchased supplies like stencils and silicone “nail brushes”, I’ve recently begun using (well-cleaned!) styrofoam meat trays (the things that come underneath meat in stores) which I texture with a stylus. Loose leaf patterns are my fave. They don’t last forever, but the patterns I’m getting, totally my own, are so worth the impermanence. BE CREATIVE! Watch lots of UA-cam videos and think outside the box!!
Lovely! Thank you for sharing Cheryl! 💜🎨💙
Must get out my gel I plate and try some of your ideas. TFS.
+Joy A. Have lots of fun!
My first time here and I enjoyed every minute, thank you.
Thank you Sandra, I am so glad you are here and that you enjoyed it!
Kim I really love 💕 this. I’ve just been doing some leaf 🍁 prints, I really love 💕 ghost prints better. Thank you so much xxx Mags
Oh I love ghost prints. Aren't they fab?! I did a leaf one recently too. It was a layered one, did you see it? It is here if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/b1nE2JfcTtE/v-deo.html Hope you had lots of fun with your prints Mags.
Thanks so much for sharing! Very good ideas! I like to make my own designs. I have yupo-paper, from which i can cut out things. It stays good. (Its sort of plastic)
+Ellen vd Ooo! Wonderful! I love playing with Yupo! I've not tried it with my gel plates, I will give it a go! Thanks for the tip! 💙✨
I had lots of yupo for ink, and saw people on UA-cam using it for their Gelli plate. Success!
Hi Kim, a great gel printing session, I love the prints that you produced. I love gel printing, but it's taken a bit of a back seat lately, since I got both some gelato's and some distress oxides!! Time to get the plates out again, me thinks!!! Lol😹😹
+Nicki Rochelle 😘 I think it goes in batches doesn't it?! 🤣 I get my gel plates out and do loads of prints and then I might not play with it again for a while! Total art magpie 😂 Have fun with your distress oxides and gelatos!
you can use oxides on the gelli plate :) do fuun watercolour or grungy looks
+Belinda Bailey lovely! Thanks for the tip Belinda!
Wonderful video-just looking into getting one of these so this is great info. I notice your paper is very thin but as a card maker, I would prefer to use cardstock. Will it work the same way? Thank you!
💕
robi92100 it would! You can use cardstock and I've used heavy weight card and it works just fine. You can also use it directly with card blanks so try that too!
I love the way you started off with not filling the whole plate with paint very abstract. I would like to do this but no gel plate yet..... next on my list I think.
😃 I'm glad you enjoyed it and you can store the ideas up for when you do get one!
Oh yes Kim I love the ideas I am picking up which is what's inspiring to try doing it in a different way. But I'll see how that goes xx
Just the inspiration I need to get my gel plate out again. I love the idea of these as gifts for people. Last time I just played around and I really liked the stamps to make marks. What’s the best way to clean them though? Xx
+Ruth Andrews - Crafting While the Baby Naps Gifts are a lovely idea 💚 Well I'll be honest I've not cleaned my DIY carved ones that I used in this vid! 😮 But if you do want to keep your stamps clean when using with acrylic paint then the easiest way is to spray them with water to keep them wet then wipe off the paint. If you don't let the paint dry on the stamp then it comes off easily. If you have stamps where the paint has dried try dabbing them in the same acrylic paint again, and wipe and wash off. Acrylic paint can work like a solvent for itself. If it is really bad try hand sanitizer but I have no idea how that effects different stamps, so try it on non-precious stamps first 😶😌
Kim Dellow Thank you for the advice! I have some ideas for masking now :D xx
Wow -
Thank you!
Can you do gelli print on canvas as well as on paper?
I am looking at some boxes of Lego and Duplo and thinking they might be some good mark makers.
+Sheryl Priest Ooo! I love that idea! If you do it let me know how it goes 😍
Messaged you on Facebook as I can't add a photo here.
I saw it! It's amazing, thanks for doing some prints and coming back to show me. The pattern it makes is wonderful! Are you going to do more?
Yes. It was lots of fun and my boys 7 and 5 enjoyed choosing colours for me and rolling paint on and rolling on the paper too.
Oh it sounds great fun! 😍
Hey Kim!! I love this video!! I need to pull out my gel press plates more. What do you do with all of the prints you create?
+kreativekymona ahh thank you! You definitely need a printing session! Go for it! I do lots of different things with my prints and I shared a few ideas in a video series last year. You can catch up with it here: bit.ly/2BdX2A5 if you missed it! You might have seen some of them pop up in Instagram! 🤣 What do you do with yours?
this artist uses them for covers for hand-bound journals: check out The Last Homey House East Of The Sea on youtube. Kate Jackson. She does a tutorial on the hand book binding.
Do you have a video on how to make your own stamps?
I do! I have two: ua-cam.com/play/PLp6jcnnFvbFiha9pcrW9PTPkuENsRW29g.html
thanks for your monoprint tutorial. Excellent. I noticed that sometimes you put paint directly on the gel plate and use the brayer to distribute the paint. Other times you put the paint on a separate palette and prepare the brayer there before painting the gel plate. Is there a reason you use both of these techniques? TIA for your response if you can.
Thanks for the question. I do switch between the two methods, as i do like both ways to apply it. I think that if you put it on the palette first it is easier to put on a thin layer on the plate and build up, if that is something you want to do. I sometimes use the palette if I want to control how much paint is on the plate. Putting it on the plate directly has an immediacy about it, like putting paint directly from the tube onto a canvas, and that is fun to play with to see what effects you get. Have you tried both/ either methods? Do you have a preference?
Thanks for explaining. Actually, I've never tried this monoprint technique. You present it so clearly that I want to give it a try. (you are very good at explaining and I like your aesthetics.) I don't have a gel plate but I think I can get some results using a piece of glass. My prints may not be the best, but I can have fun. Best to you. --nina.
❤️❤️❤️😂x
+Caroline Thomas thank you 💜💙💚💙💛
