I now have enormous respect for the repairer who recently fixed my own iPad. What a hero!
You've got way more patience than I do. That thing would have made more than one trip across the room. My hat's off to you.

Somewhere an Apple engineer is watching and thinking “hmmmm, we should link the case to the logic board by serial number so people can’t do this…”
and they do this since a year or two now. but hey. every year less and less products they sell.
I hate apple more and mor every day
@@o-hogameplay185 no, Apple links the electrical components together, not the physical case or frame
@@datdang9113 give them a few more years, they'll find a way I bet, or just find a way to permanantly attach them to the case so it's impossible to remove at all.
I like my apple products, but they are so anti repair it's quite disgusting.
They pot the whole damn thing together.
This is the reason people like Louis Rossmann and the framework company are so important, this is completely ridiculous, I'm 100% sure this could be built better, hell you improved it by not glueing as many parts in
sadly better seems to conflict with their goal of forcing people to either get a new one or have them repair/replace it themselves, both of which theyre gonna charge you a stupid amount for
@@xenstence yes.
Who knows how many projects are sitting because of unavailability of parts, let's help this man find all the necessary parts he needs, then we'll get to watch more new videos.
I have a compact mac that needs a new logic board, does that count?
Not really. With a good contact in China this problem in the video could have been avoided and solved in a few days using DHL to ship it.
I'm surprised he still hasn't done this, me and Many other suppliers do this, but he probably doesn't have the time and just prefers looking at websites and then complaining about getting low quality parts so the sponsors look better.
@@Rewindandrevive He does independent repair, you own a repair shop and thus need much more part shipped in then him. That doesn't mean "he could ship just one for 2x the money and get a slightly less dodgy part that already works"
@@totallynotbluu not true at all. When I started I could buy 1-2 things if I wanted. Whatever I wanted in whatever quality I wanted. And shipping depended on how quick I want it and it's not to expensive.
So complaining about China having bad parts comes down to not putting the effort out there to actually look for someone reputable and can get you things that aren't even on the open market. But to find someone takes a lot of trial and error.
I really didn’t get why people are so hyped about the “Right to Repair “ thing
Now i SURELY do
i have a feeling the engineers would have liked to fill the whole thing with epoxy… but some lawyer pointed out that that would make it too obvious
@@gorgonbert It's not the engineers, it's the marketing and finance people that decide the reparability of apple devices.
@@lukewatson059 Yes it won't have direct impact, but as louis rossman says it's not just right to repair that's going to fix all the problems it's the consumers who will make a change. If parts are available more easily then more people would be intrested in fixing their devices or getting them fixed as repair costs and time will be lower. Once that happens people when buying a new product will consider reparability too which will slowly force companies to make their products more repairable. It's a chain of events and right to repair is first step towards it.
fact is the technology involved is very delicate there and the device needs to be secured from curious customers who would damage it and then just trash it (thus dealing even more pollution) or complain the product is crap because it didn't whitstand the blows of their jackhammer. Apple's policy has always been dedicated to protecting their product knowing the average consumer can't be trusted, so if anything doesn't work it's due to their engineers and they can control the evolution in a more efficient way.
I tried to change a battery from one ipad once, following a thorough tutorial and was very careful yet... the wifi didn't work anymore. I'm sure I didn't touch anything wrong and yet the device was suddenly trash.
@@3Clod sure, not all end users are as expert as hugh, but rpair shops are. And if I buy something its my right to do what I want to do to it. I'm not fucking renting it from a company who tells me not to repair it, save some money and maybe save a machine from being e waste.
Apple harp on about their environmental credentials but make it impossible for expert third party repair, they literally refuse to provide componants so repair shops can't fix problems even though they know how to do so. Its so shady.
as the "ipad specialist" at my store i would highly recommend using acetone except on fragile parts (lcd, motherboard, etc). Battery adhesive becomes jelly in 30 seconds and makes life so much easier. i think the magnets would have popped out much easier with this method as well.
They would’ve

Have you ever tried using zippo light fluid to loosen the adhesive on these products. The lighter fluid evaporates and doesn’t damage any of the components. I have been using it for years to remove the adhesive for stickers and such. It might be worth a try. Almost forgot, love your content.
Try lacquer thinner, thats well better than zippo
Don't do this....
A lot of zippo fluid has additives meant to be combusted and helps with "wicking" which isn't advised on circuit boards.
I'd stick to high % isopropyl alcohol instead....
@@1337GameDev , one uses zippo lighter fluid because it evaporates and leaves no residue on surfaces used for adhesive.
@@johnchristopherrobert1839 One uses acetone if one doesn't mind the risk of already using fuels that can damage plastic.

This repair was insane, amazing work Hugh!
Well done, I can’t believe how difficult disassembly is.
Usually the disassembly is easier than the assembly.
My trick with stubborn adhesive is using a (power adjustable with a few settings) hairdryer (blowdryer) to warm up the adhesive and surroundings carefully, This usually makes disassembly a little bit smoother as this softens the bond. This also works wonders for removing stickers :)
The complexity Hugh on this one quite astounding, so many levels of screws and glues too. wow
This ipad repair tooks more than a year!! this is totally insane and only huge do it keep it up! Love your channel ❤️
Wow, you are keen. In stripping the old case I was waiting for the battery to catch fire, especially after you folded up one corner 5:18
I wonder if the glue under the login board is to improve thermal conduction to the case.
Also, I wonder if all that glue under the speaker is to.. A/ avoid rattles & buzzes, & B/ stiffening for better sound.

So impressive Jeff. Despite the project put on hold for moths due parts availability you still managed to return things back well piece by piece. Bravo ...

Yo, for that SMART connector trouble:
Once you've got the bracket and glue off, and pried up the cabling, You can use a conveniently shaped piece of plastic and a small hammer to pop the circular bits inward. A plastic spudger cut/ground down to shape works nicely. Still gotta be really careful, tho.

all sundays, i look forward to watch Hugh jeffreys restoration. oddly satisfying
The glue on the speaker assembly probably helps to make better contact with the case which is used as part of the speaker. Not fleeing the speaker assembly down should result in worse sound quality, it would be interesting to hear a direct comparison.
A few things,
1. you could probably repair the smart connector, might be a bit shoddy but worth a shot IMO.
2. don't be afraid to heat the battery up, you can also use a paint scraper, or a thing metal spatula to cut the adhesive, it's done frequently and has been discussed 1000 times, it works, i would use an iflex.
3. you're missing a plastic spacer for the home button. I would've super glued the metal disc. When I do home button's on ipad I also apply a bead of B7000 around the bracket, helps keep it in after heavy use (read: kids)
4. the magnets, you could've sacrificed the original casing by deforming it and you would've been able to remove all the magnets, as well as extreme heat, like 150-250C.
5. the adhesive on the wifi cables is a TERRIBLE idea, if it ever gets opened up again it's a mess, especially when it wasn't there to begin width and hasn't been standard since the ipad 2.
6. electrical tape looks weird, Kapton tape would be an appropriate solution.
7. There is a 3M brand adhesion promoter people use for a really good seal, while no necessary for the frame, i would advise to use it for the home button bracket, and switch to the tesa black adhesive, instead of the red, it's thinner and holds on a bit better.
There is nothing pro about a device that is so difficult to repair. Well done.
It's Profitable
So glad I'm out of the portable device repair business these days. It started getting really annoying around iPhone 8.. This is just a new level.
"You're going to need an excessive amount of alcohol in order to complete this. The iPad will need some too, as it will help break down that glue" lmfao
Yeah, i replaced one of the last week, took me easily 1 hour just to transfer those magnets, a tip to removing those is to use a hotair station at max temperature (450Cº ish), it will soften the glue and make the job a little bit easier
"You'll need an excessive amount of alcohol in order to complete this. The iPad will need some too.." LOL
The iPad will be the most drunk thing of the two 🤣
So glad for this video; I had an iPad Pro 9.7 last year where I dropped juice on the iPad and thus broke the touch part. I now feel good that I have sold the iPad for parts for $100 , instead of trying a repair. I couldn't, I see now.
So thanks for the reassurance
Putting the iPad on a heat mat helps soften the adhesive when removing parts, especially the battery. Makes it a lot easier.

For the battery, you can always buy a heating pad and a scraper to undo the adhesive that keeps the battery in place. I learned that the hard way. The heating pad I got was about 15 dollars on Amazon and it works great.

The inability to sleep/wake the device could be related to the magnets missing? Just guessing. Nice video! I find these repairs fascinating.
