Painting with Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

- Heya,
I hope October has been treating you well.
I've been experimenting with watercolor paper in the studio and wanted to show you how it's been going.
Watercolor painting is known as a very delicate art form, not forgiving, and involves a lot of technique, but I'm not doing that at all. I am a lover of acrylic paint, it's forgiving, dries fast, and has a huge spectrum of possibilities. I do love painting on paper, but a bumpy surface is outside my comfort zone, so when I was gifted a block of cold pressed watercolor paper I was hesitant, but curious if my bias could be swayed. I have worked on it before so this wasn't my first rodeo, but I wanted to invite more play and experimentation into this round with abstraction and more colorful layers. Working on three paintings at once can break down that whole attachment to an outcome or a sense of preciousness that sometimes happens in making new artwork.
Plus, it makes it more fun to bounce from one surface to the next.
I hope you enjoy the results of the abstract work that came from a few days of painting, I sure did.
Until next time,
take good care.
-Andrea
This is so soothing. I am not an abstract painter but my grandmother was and it’s nice to be reminded of her.

Love these. Luscious colors, watery paint, scraping, re-painting. So inspirational.

When I started using acrylics, I bought some proper acrylic winsor and newton pads. But now I use mixed media pads to experiment with. I find the proper paper is very glossy, yet the mixed media paper, similar to watercolour paper, drags the paint off the brush, which is more like canvas. I might also try the oil paint pads that have similar paper in. I use canvas or canvas board most often for paintings. It's good that there are so many options out there. All the best, John
@@JohnHarrisonArtist Yes, so many options! Each surface has it’s own qualities to play with 😊
Given the cost of high quality watercolour paper..I would use mixed media paper… but as you were gifted the paper makes sense you used it for experimentation
A good quality ge$$o put on thick will seal wc paper; so you can play longer on top of it;
and it wont absorb the paint.
