I was going to ask you though, why do you think that Gray's papaya is $7.50, and then I thought that maybe Gray's papaya MAY HAVE some sort of long term rental agreement with their landlord and Papaya King just moved into their new location. Maybe proximity to their previous location was super important. But coming at it from a percentage angle it does seem though that $11.99 is a far distance from $7.50,... when the similar item can be purchased for $7.50.
Those prices negate the whole original reasoning for going there. Even for 2024, too much for a couple of dogs. It definitely must all go to the rent. I'll try t for nostalgia, but , I can get equally good( bad) dogs cheaper in the city.
Exactly my thoughts as well. I remember back in the 90’s they were something $.50 a piece. That was the primary reason people went. Had a bunch of friends who were NYU and Cooper Union students and that was their go to for quick and cheat eats. I don’t ever remember any of us raving over how awesome the dog was but it was solid for the money.
Thanks for the timely video! I've been going to Grey's Papaya on B'Way and 72nd St. for many years and it's still one of the best cheap eats in NYC. 2 franks and a tropical drink cost $7.50 including tax as of 7/9/24. Papaya King is $11.99 for a similar combo.
Happy to hear they finally opened the relocated store. I used to visit the original UES location frequently (86th St/3rd Ave) and I'll tell you that a big part of the experience was enjoying your meal while looking directly out at the crossroads intersection. As for condiments, they're highly personal so I generally wouldn't mention the following, but here goes; I recommend topping with mustard and red onions (stewed red onions). It's a lovely compliment to the beef dog and the hot robust mustard goes well with the sweetness of the onions in red sauce.
Boursin wasn’t just a customer. He said this was the only place worth eating at on the UES. And he was right. But it fell off hard when it was bought and/or staffed by new owners.

I live about ten blocks away from this and so everyone in my neighborhood was very upset when it closed and super super excited when it reopened! Wish I got to meet you while you were filming this! (It replaced n empty storefront that used to be a "lush" store).

great video ! i grew up a few blocks from the original location on 86th street and also lived over by Lincoln Center so i have been eating both all my life. i remember the recession special after 9/11 also ! the best part of all these hot dogs is the snap of the real skin and the fact that they are grilled. i have never had the chili dog. i would say the red onions is what most people get and thats my favorite. anyway, so happy its reopened and i cant wait to go next time i am visiting my mom on the upper east side !
@uaeats that would be wonderful. Moving to Delaware as a child, made many trips back and forth as my grandparents were still in Brooklyn. Mostly every weekend and mom and I always ended visit with a stop at Nathan's. Packed up the cooler and brought stuff home to dad and brothers. I do miss it.

Also in PA in Fairless hills I believe is the town there is a bbq spot called mission bbq. Mighty fine bbq there I’ve had both spots and think they are top notch. Looking forward to your opinion!
My favorite hotdog place is back! Took too long to open, but I’m so happy they reopened. Hotdog is so good that I do not need any toppings. Plain is the way to go with a banana daiquiri. So yummy! Love watching your reviews, reactions and facial expressions when you love the food. Keep them coming.

Next time you go there, add sea salt. I use a small seasoning dispenser that hangs as a key chain on my set of keys. Game changer. Enhanced flavor every time.

I used to go to the original all the time when I lived up there. Get them with sauerkraut and onions, and add mustard. They call them “home runs” when ordered that way. The dogs themselves are outstanding and better than most at any price. Great garlicky salty flavor, and great snap, and they always get a nice sear on the griddle. Perfect with a tropical drink.
There’s this place in Bushwick called Santa salsa that has even better hotdogs than papaya, the best I’ve had in my life in my opinion and this is from somebody that was born and raised in Coney Island, and grew up with Nathan’s. You should definitely go there and try it out.

I used to go to one of the Papaya knockoffs in the 1990s and early 2000s. For six bucks, you could get two hot dogs and a drink. Prices are getting ridiculous.
Loved going to the OG location at 86th and 3rd in the late 80s and early 90s. The King is much better than Rutts Hutt. The new joint is definitely on my list and I hope they have merch.

UA. Back in the day, talking about the 80s, the King was the go to spot. Hands down the best dog in NYC.
I used to go to one of the Papaya knockoffs in the 1990s and early 2000s. For six bucks, you could get two hot dogs and a drink. Prices are getting ridiculous.
If you ever go to Monmouth County, NJ please try Windmill hot dogs. The one in Long Branch is the original.

Loved going to the OG location at 86th and 3rd in the late 80s and early 90s. The King is much better than Rutts Hutt. The new joint is definitely on my list and I hope they have merch.
