  • In todays video, we show how to repair the trim/tilt wire harness for the Yamaha 150 outboard motor. This wiring harness is responsible for the trim/tilt control at the helm on the Yamaha 704 control and ignition related wires that control the startup of the motor. During the repair, additional issues were found with the starter relay, but proper troubleshooting helped identify and fix the problem.

Thank you for the video. This was the problem with our boat. We were able to purchase the harness online and my husband and son replaced the harness easily thanks to your video. Our boat is finally back to running perfectly.

I’m having the same issue. Wasn’t sure about cutting the harness where you did because of the extra black wire. Without the black wire connected… you still have no issues with the new 10 pin harness? Thank you for the video. Very happy.

This video was very helpful👌. Can I have a link for the harness? I didn't see it in the description

Hey man, I thought that this video was exactly what I was looking for, but didn’t quite get me figured out. I am at my wits end and am just short of replacing the wiring harness like you did, although I haven’t 100% sure that I’ve got it narrowed down to that. I worked my way back from the motor to the harness without any luck. I was pretty confident my problem was either in the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch in the remote control. However, after bypassing the safety switch, I metered the pins and found VERY low voltage. Like .04 V low. What I found was that little red wire coming out and pigtailing to both the ignition and control was in poor shape and busted when I tried to firm it up. I stripped the male end of the bullet connector and shoved bare wire into the female, and got up to .07V. Anyway it got dark and I have been troubleshooting this thing for 2 days now and called it quits. Is that wire the 12V lead to both harnesses? If so, it would be pretty safe to assume that that’s my problem correct? By the way I checked the link you provided for the harness and they’re out of stock. I’ve been going crazy over this one!

Its pretty hard to tell you exactly without seeing how your boat is wired. I will tell you that as we were working on this, we found another issue which was a faulty ignition switch. We replaced that as well (and made a video on this too). As I understand, you should have power to the ignition switch and when turned to on (and in neutral) you should have power to the entire ignition system which would reach the starter through the wiring harness. I would check that you have power coming to the ignition switch. In our setup the red wire was split to the remote control (for trim/tilt) and the ignition switch. My boat is in storage now, but that's what I can remember from re-watching the video. If you send me a picture of your wiring I might be able to see what is going on. Send it to @jkfishingcanada via DM on instagram. Sucks that the harness is not available, but you should be able to find another one somewhere on amazon or an online supplier. Just note the product number and make sure you get the same one with correct wire colours and connector.

Is the 10 pin connector the only electrical connector (s) that goes from your control console area to the motor? Or is there another wire?

I have an 85hp 2-stroke from Guatemala (supposed to be 2014). Model says 6G6. I get that it is presumably listed as international, but no one can find that in ANY database, even here in Belize. Can anyone help verify for certain a USA equivalent model number is? I can't be certain where or what parts to buy to replace these plastic parts described, among other things. Can anyone help with this?
