  • Moving to a new city can be a fun but stressful time. In this video I share some of the things that we wished we'd know when we moved to Hanoi with our two children
In the first section, I look at where to live in Hanoi and what to do about finding a place to live.
In the second section I talk a bit about the people and culture here in Hanoi. What the food is like, how much Vietnamese you really need to get by in Hanoi, and ways to acclimatise your family when moving to somewhere brand new.
The weather and pollution are big factors in Hanoi, so we look at what you can expect in each month and how bad the pollution gets on the AQI scale.
Lastly I talk a bit about things that are useful to bring from back home and things you can and can't find around Hanoi.
I hope this video can give you some help in moving with a family to Hanoi and can start you off on the right foot!

Thanks for your video. What did you do for schooling for your 5 year old? Do you send to a public school? Private local? or private international? How did your kid adapt to learning in a new language?

We home educate our children, which is legal in Vietnam. Schooling is expensive in Hanoi, especially at the good international schools though. In terms of language learning, the kids learned a bit but how much they'll need will depend on how you're spending your time, eg it's quite easy to hang out with mostly expats, though some families will have a lot more Vietnamese contact than others! International schools are largely bilingual or English (or French, Korean etc)

@@FamilyTravelNomads Do you hire local teachers for homeschooling or do it yourself?

We have a relaxed approach and home educate largely for the freedom it affords us to support our children to learn in the way that best suits them, so at the ages they're at we haven't brought in any outside tuition etc. Lots of museum visits, trips out, swimming, some sports etc
