- Mercury in retrograde happens four times this year, and the celestial event is getting a lot of attention. Some think the planet’s movements can hurt communication, technology, travel and more. Michio Kaku, CBS News' science and futurist contributor and physics professor at the City University of New York, joins “CBS This Morning” to explain what's going on.

They ask a scientist and astrology question. In the words of Stephen Hawking’s, “ I am an astronomer, not an astrologer.”
Astrology has just as much merit as any other science. You know the moon has an effect on water, correct? Then why be dumb enough to assume that the other satellites in our system dont also effect us in other ways. Only people who don't understand anything about our universe think astrology is pseudo science. Some of the greatest men and women in history were avid astrologers.

I find funny how he minimize this topic. This is a house transit and is not like everybody will have the same effects with a mercury retrograde. It all depends which house is aspecting for that you need a birth chart which is calculated using your exact moment of birth. Astrology is very very accurate. Scary sometimes. And mercury retrograde is not only what he is saying. Goes way deeper.

He's incorrect that the planets actually move backward, though. They simply slow down so much that they give the _optical illusion_ of moving backward.

@@terrenzojones4560 Yes, but the problem here is that this is a news show, meant to inform, and this guy DOESN'T know or understand what the retrograde is other than what the planets do in the sky. It's not his title that matters, it's that he doesn't have the information. When people say "Ugh! Mercury's retrograde!" it IS because there's a propensity for certain things to run amok. HOWEVER, it's also a GREAT time for certain things like RE-writing, RE-organizing, RE-claiming, re-doing, re-structuring, etc. And THAT is the sort of thing an Astrologer but not a Physicist would know. (Unless he also studies Astrology!). SO, at least for me, THAT was my objection; that he didn't give the pertinent information. Information that would help people ... and also could re-structure HOW THEY THINK ABOUT retrogrades! (Positively rather than negatively, or just dismissing them).

Astrology claims there to be some kind of causation between the position of celestial objects at birth and someone's personality traits but has not been tested to prove or disprove this notion so there's nothing wrong with asking someone's opinion regardless of their occupation or field of study because no one actually knows.

Americastalented Moves Mercury retrograde has no effect what so ever on your emotions. It's only a nocebo effect (you only notice things go wrong when your told that they'll go wrong).

Mercury definitely does affect those born as gemini and virgo as it's the ruling planet !!! Everything energetically for me slows up and falters during a retrograde .....and I definitely feel the energy of that change hit me as soon as I enter a retrograde ......it illudes us as a planet which us why scientists are still trying to establish much more about this little planet . I personally use this time to re evaluate and reflect and take more time with what I do ....mercury is generally a fast moving planet ....the illusion of it living backwards is interesting ...however there is much more to be discovered regarding the energetic effects thus has ....I also find my speech is affected by it .....As do many others with mercurial ruling sun sign .
i got a Libra Sun and Gemini moon and the other thingy im not sure if its rising or what but thats Virgo and this past month was crazy maaahn it came outta nowhere

When Pluto goes into Aquarius in a few years astrology will be able to be more real publicly as Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, ruler of Astrology. It's no less valuable than a weather report. It's not intentended to just be superficial.

The planet goes backwards? I thought it slows so much every planet passes it to appear it's moving backward. Which is it?
It appears to go backwards but does not actually move backwards. All planets move at different speeds so they are constantly passing eachother. Mercury retrograde has nothing to do with planets passing eachother.

It also affects communication and transportation. I received two online orders, one bag had a hole in it, the powder was coming out so I had to send it back, the other item was wrong flavor so I had to send it back also. That is the effect of Mercury retrograde! Stuff happens. Has such things happened to me also other times when Mercury was not in retrograde? Yes, mistakes do happen other times also, but rather infrequently. When Mercury is in retrograde you can count on something bad happening! I shouldn't have ordered anything!

Heart/mind, right/left brain, feminine/masculine, etc. We live in world with extreme imbalance, that is how the forces of domination and control maintain the human farm. Scientism is the new religion. Truth is always hidden in the open by dividing it into sides. One side that has part of the truth will always try to suppress the other sides truth by focusing on its lies.
They tend to go by what is demonstrated to be true according to the evidence that is available.
@@turb0diesel Science is not a religion. It uses the evidence that is available to prove and disprove hypotheses. Anyone can publish any empirical research to a scientific journal. Science is constantly changing to adapt to the information that surfaces to maximise the accuracy of it's deductions and has led to the greatest examples of human engineering from planes to smartphones. Religion on the other hand is based on faith through spiritual conviction instead of empirical evidence.

well he does say stuff goes wrong all the time but we remember it during Mercury retrograde, which i dont doubt but to someone with no knowledge of what mercury retrograde is why is it they even they make emphasis on the difficulties in life i mean in my own case i made alot of emphasis on past struggles and even current ones but i had no clue what Mercury retrograde was yes i heard the word being thrown around but as to if it was positive or negative i wasnt aware of i just knew it was something to do with astrology and for the most part i didnt believe in astrology but its been a tough month mentally and i couldnt understand it i dont know if its finished or not but i look back on how i felt a few days ago and i wonder how on earth i was able to sink into a state of depression out of nowhere like im completely okay now asif nothing happened

That's not true. His example of thinking of someone on the other side of the phone, is a terrible example. Of all the people you could be thinking of... And it happens to more people than less. If we have all experienced that phenomena at some point, it clearly shows he is a propagandist trying to sell us away from our interconnectivity.

People don’t understand mercury retrograde. Mercury, being the ruler of Gemini, rules technology communication and short distance travel, also siblings. So when Mercury goes retrograde the impact is to these themes, not everything in all areas of life that seem to go awry can be chalked up to mercury retrograde 🙄🙄🙄. Sadly, it’s just become a trend to blame things on Mercury retrograde without its any real understand of what it means

To me his explanation of retrograde explains the backwards motion. But not the looping motion. Am I missing something?
I may be wrong on this, but I think the looping is caused by the fact that our orbital plains are at slightly different angles.
Thanks, I just watched the movie "The Principle", where the same scientist, Michio Kaku, along with a bunch of other top scientist, admit that the Capirous Principle has reached the end of it's scientific life cycle! A discovery in 2006 and again in 2013 is the final nail in the coffin of the Heliocentric model. So it's back to one of the Geocentric models that explain the looping and retrograde better. Look it up on UA-cam, or see the Movie (Documentary) on Amazon.

People believe in time, but how is time calculated? But you don’t believe the planets effect anything, right? Yet we agree the moon effects the waters and tides (emotions). People follow things and systems without even knowing or attempting to learn their origins.

Every planet emits energy frequencies specific to that orb. We of the animal kingdom, are affected by sound frequencies. We are also responsive to sound frequencies revisited, and memory is triggered, causing a review and analysis of the past inflence and events occurring then. Each planet affects us in some way, thru its energy, perpetually, more noticeablely when the proximity of the influence is closest or sustained as during retrograde.

Science is the process of formulating a hypothesis to test against empirical evidence in order to accept or reject a hypothesis. Astronomy uses the scientific nethod to understand celestial objects such as stars and planets. Astrology is based on an understanding of the orbits of stars and planets so is grounded in these scientific facts which have been observed, measured, tested and proven to be true against empirical evidence. However, astrology makes hypotheses about a causation between the relative relationship of planets and stars and behavioural traits within humans without the process of observing, measuring and testing this causation.
Therefore, the scientific method itself is missing from the components of astrology which separate it from astronomy. Similar to religious and spiritual studies, astrology isn't about creating models to demonstrate proven causations like the sciences but is based on making a leap of faith that what it says is accurate against the human population. There's nothing wrong with having beliefs about the nature of the universe or humanity which require a leap of faith if you just realise that it is a leap of faith and not proven science.

The average scientist would predictably say that the energetic effect of planetary movement is “hit or miss”. I will be happy when we live in a time when a scientist knows enough to say: “For a full response, it is good to ask an Astrologer. I really have not studied that.”
the problem is there are scientist who are having and living like a real scientist .. he will never discard knowledge he doesn't know unless he has proper research on that... the fact is that many scientists become activists using their label as being a scientist.
Astrology is very real but look to Vedic astrology people, not “tropical astrology” which is what it’s called in the US. People are made of energy and the planets gives off energy and light and this does affect us. Listen to Kara delpechie, Vic Dicara or Clair Nakti. They explain astrology in such detail and give physical examples and from a Vedic perspective which is the only perspective that matters. I can’t help but cringe at People who call themselves professional astrologers from the “tropical” or US perspective because it is so silly. I don’t get offended if people treat astrology as a joke because usually it’s always coming from someone who has a vague understanding of it and from the tropical perceptive and I would agree with them, it’s really silly and even stupid from that perspective.

Sorry, I have been tracking Mercury Retrogrrades for 30 years---and I can tell you that while this distinguished scientist knows the technicalities of this phenomenon, he most definitely is missing the subtle yet powerful impact of this time period. For many, many years I REFUSED to believe it was true but I found, much to my chagrin, that thee are certain important implications of Mercury Retrograde----ignore them at your own peril.
