Abdominal distension occurs when substances, such as air (gas) or fluid, accumulate in the abdomen causing its expansion.[1] It is typically a symptom of an underlying disease or dysfunction in the body, rather than an illness in its own right. People with this condition often describe it as "feeling bloated". Affected people often experience a sensation of fullness, abdominal pressure, and sometimes nausea, pain, or cramping. In the most extreme cases, upward pressure on the diaphragm and lungs can also cause shortness of breath. Through a variety of causes (see below), bloating is most commonly due to buildup of gas in the stomach, small intestine, or colon. The pressure sensation is often relieved, or at least lessened, by belching or flatulence. Medications that settle gas in the stomach and intestines are also commonly used to treat the discomfort and lessen the abdominal distension. Experts believe[who?] that a major cause of abnormal bloating is excessive eating and air swallowing, known as aerophagia.[non-primary source needed] Other causes of bloating and distension include inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease[2][3] and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, functional dyspepsia, or transient constipation. In rare cases, bloating may occur in individuals who have milk intolerance (lactose intolerance), parasite infections such as giardia, food poisoning (bacteria), celiac disease, severe peptic ulcer disease, bowel obstruction, or after certain types of abdominal surgery.[citation needed]
Heart failure and cirrhosis are also a common cause of distension. In both of these disorders, fluid accumulates in the abdomen and creates a sensation of fullness. Abdominal distension can also be a symptom of ovarian cancer. Women are more prone to bloating and often identify these symptoms during menstruation.[4] Some individuals who develop distension may have either poor motility of their intestines or may be hypersensitive to gut sensations.[5] Certain medications, such as antidepressants and anti-spasmodics, can contribute to reduced gut motility. Studies have shown that swallowing air during eating or delayed emptying of the stomach from hyperacidity leads to bloating after a meal. Individuals who are constipated also complain of bloating. In some individuals who are hypersensitive, any volume of air may be perceived as fullness and there may not be actual abdominal distension.[6][7]
Abdominal distension (or "distended abdomen") can be a sign of many other conditions, including:
Ascites
Capillaria philippinensis
Celiac disease
Coccidiosis
Cystic fibrosis
Diverticulitis
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis
Fasciolosis
Gastroparesis
Giardiasis
Hookworm disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)
Kidney stones
Kwashiorkor
Lactose intolerance
Obstructed bowel
Ovarian cancer
Polycystic liver disease
Pregnancy
Premenstrual syndrome
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection
Small bowel bacterial overgrowth syndrome
Strongyloidiasis
Tropical sprue
Weight gain
Whipple's disease
Anterior Pelvic Tilt (Lower Cross Syndrome)
Persistent or recurrent bloating may be caused by intestinal parasites, other infections, or other medical conditions.[citation needed]
Diagnosis
The first step in diagnosis is to determine the etiology of abdominal distension. After making a differential diagnosis of abdominal distension, it is important to take a careful medical history.
Here are the most common causes of abdominal distension classified as an underlying cause and as a secondary disease.
As an underlying disease cause:
Constipation
Lactose intolerance and other food intolerances
Overeating (due to overproduction of gases in the digestion process)
As a secondary disease cause:
Celiac disease
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
Peptic ulcer disease
Accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity (e.g., ascites)
I just feel like I’ve been diagnosed by watching this video. I need to go check up. My stomach has been little bulging and I always feel full even without eating . Something clearly is not right in there.
Me too!!!
@@C_rey_crochetingwhat are all your symptoms?
What are your symptoms with stomach swelling, are you having loss of appetite or weight loss?
Me too. Never really hungry but I overeat and it's worse
@@KH-3414 do you not have appetite or feel hungry ? Is your stomach bloated? With food or drinks ?
Thnk u soo much sir ❤
감사
So every single thing causes it… got it
Good
Thank you
You're welcome
My cause is due to IBS And Lactose Intolerance 🙂🙂.. but i don't know when to get fit
Try keto then move to carnivore, thata the only thing that has helped me in over 30 years, it's basically cutting any inflammatory foods out
ya me too
Go run if your that damn big😂
Start dry fasting
And take daily walks, most ppl who have legs can walk a little.
I use poles to walk to make it more adventurous or exciting.
Pole walking activates 90% of your body's muscles, so it is more beneficial for you.
If you can't dry fast, try liquid fasting & intermittent fasting.
I lost 30 kg in 6 months dry fasting & walking back & forth to work, with ibs & mental illnesses & other ailments.
If you can't walk, like I do atm because o broke my foot, ride your bike or start swimming.
Anything to just start circulating your body's movements.
Even QiGong, which I do is very sweating.
I have gained back all those 30 kg now due to starting a medication which increased my apetite & not being able to move.
So I'm considering starting to dry fast again, at least liquid fasting for 6 hrs in waking hours.
You have to fast at least 12-14hrs for body to start getting into ketosis state (fat burning state, but this fat burning state also gives you energy).
The first 3 days you want to dye lol, the 4th day you will get increased energy levels & feel fine & dandy!!
You could start the keto diet.
I think it would be good for ppl with any sort of problems.
My bro in law also dropped like 20 kg only switching to keto diet.
He did it for his back problem.
He doesn't get any high & lows, as u get with carbs, and u feel full as well with the protein fat & fibres 👌
Please try something for your wellbeing.
I did dry fasting for my IBS but also for spiritual reasons & to fight my depression & ADHD.
I was tired ofc & low on energy because I was severely burnt out.
But I think dry fasting is the key for me for msintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the only way I can manage my weight is through starving myself, otherwise i look like a baloon all the time, even when I hardly eat.
I have tried this before.
Maybe the results will be different for others idk.
But I am always exhausted & have no motivation yo live or do stuff.
So if I can do it, so can others.
I dry fasted for 2 1/2 years in a row, while working a demanding job.
I did it to get rid off the pain & not spend my life on the toilet either throwing up or the other exit 😬
Good luck!! 🍀✊️😊
P.s. I first started to eat 6 small meals a day
3 light main meals & 3 snack meals, I ate every 3-4 hrs.
This is how I first started the 30 kg weight loss.
Then I switched over to dry fasting, because I couldn't live with the stress & pain.
If you want quicker steadier results, dry fasting to drop those kg's & then you can start a better sustainable lifestyle.
I feel the 6-small meals a day maintained balanced sugar levels.
It also helped at least my metabolism since it is very sluggish, I look like a baloon.
So you could try that. I think 6 small meals is even great for ppl with IBS, because you don't stuff yourself with a lot at once 👌
If yiu are a tired person, maybe getting small amounts of energy through food distributed throughout the day may give one more power to be able to pull through the workday as well.
You sure have a lot of meals to look forward to lol ;)
My stomach is so big right now and i can barely eat a meal without having constant pain. It keeps getting bigger every day, but Im losing weight, because I cant eat. Also I am havign an upper gi series this week so hopefully that will show something, because Im extremely uncomfortable.
I have the same symptoms for over a year. Trying to find out what is the cause. Eat very little and feel extremely full and uncomfortable. Nauseas too.
I hope your upper GI series provides some clarity and relief for your symptoms, and I wish you a swift recovery.
Hey Rachel, did you ever find out what was causing this? Asking because I’m dealing with the same thing :(
Everything on Earth

Low fiber diet shows a lettuce salad???
_Quick fix: Avoid overeating. Don't drink soft drinks. Drink lots of water_
Remember: Moderation in eating, avoid sugary drinks, hydrate with plenty of water. ❤️
I've decided that I have.... let's see... Ascites. Yes, that must be it.
What are your symptoms?
What's that, fluid?
@@KH-3414 water build up .. staying in your body not being emptied out of your body. Trapped fluid...
Ikr?
Well 💀👋
Lol better say what it's not lol
whoa i think i might be pregnant .... better stop drinking ... im a man but the news says i can get pregnant n ow.
It's important to seek medical advice if you have concerns about abdominal distention; staying informed about your health is always the best choice. ❤️
