Dolphin Tale star Winter dies in her caretakers' arms

- Winter the Dolphin died Thursday at Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida. The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, whose story inspired millions, was 16. Winter lived without a tail after becoming tangled in the rope of a crab trap when she was a calf. She was deemed non-releasable and lived out her life at CMA, which operates as a marine animal hospital dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and - when possible - releasing the animals that come through its doors.
In November 2021, Winter developed a gastrointestinal issues, a problem she'd dealt with at times in the past. The nation’s top veterinary specialists were consulted in her final days, as CMA explored all possible options to save her life.
A spokesperson said the marine animal hospital's care team noticed her behavior and vital signs were declining while she was being prepped for a procedure. Winter's caretakers tried "several life-saving efforts," but she died in their arms.
“While we are heartbroken by Winter’s death, we are comforted knowing that our team did everything possible to give her the best chance at survival. We worked with specialists and marine mammal experts from around the country to provide her with the best care available. Our staff worked around the clock during this challenging time,” wrote Veterinarian Dr. Shelly Marquardt, DVM, CVA.

I loved both Dolphin Tale movies, and following Winter & Hope’s journey I’m so beyond saddened to hear that Winter passed away she was one of a kind and an inspiration to so many! I’m so sad about this I have been a fan of winter since I was 4 I got to go see her for my 13th birthday a last year and I was filled with tears of joy! She is the most amazing beautiful dolphin I had ever seen. She was also the first dolphin I had ever seen in person! I had been begging to go see her for 9 years and I’m so sad that she has passed. I was so excited to get to see her for real and I hope that she has an amazing time in heaven with all of the other dolphins! We love you sooo much winter! Rest In Peace! You are loved winter!! ❤️

RIP Winter. My wife and I got to see Winter for the first time in May of 2007 while on vacation. This was our first vacation after getting married in 2006. My wife loves dolphins and aquariums, and the original CMA was within walking distance from our hotel room. We went to CMA spontaneously the one day. We were walking around and saw the boathouse, signage, and other stuff from the movie. We didn't know about it, so we asked a worker. She told us that there was a movie filmed about Winter and that it hasn't been released yet. We went up and watched the showing of Winter. It was very respectful of her and her condition. We then filmed Winter while everyone else walked away. Winter came right over to us and hung out there by us. We talked to her and she was looking at us and the camera. Winter was trying to talk to us by making noises to us when we spoke to her. It was a great day. We have gone about 3 times since over the years, when we can afford to travel that far from Ohio. We made sure we go visit her any time God gives us the ability to go. Sadly we will never be able to visit her again, but plan on visiting CMA again sometime in the future. God bless them and how well they take care of those animals in need. We will miss you Winter. 😭

I personally would spend hours rewatching the Dolphin Tales, because i LOVED them more than any movie i have watched. On March 21, 2023 i went to watch Dolphin Tale and maybe watch the Live Cam, but when i did, i could not find the Live Cam, so i searched if Winter died, and it said yes. i went onto my knees and cried: WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?! yes. it is true. Winter still seemed so young. How did she deserve this? She has been through so much already. RIP Winter. Rest well. 🐬💔💔💔💔💔😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I'm so saddened to find this out today. My son is learning to swim, and today he swam like a dolphin. I was so impressed i said he was like winter and he got so excited. 😭😭

Wish they would have started antibiotics sooner…..but I guess they were not aware how sick she was…..poor baby, but they gave her many more years of life because they saved her almost 16 years ago.
It wouldn't have helped. The doctors said a the press conference that her intestines were twisted so badly, they couldn't be fixed with surgery. They did everything possible, making her as comfortable as they could.
