I am now one year in Germany and I think it will give me a peace of mind if I had just chose a Last Name when I registered last time. Makes it less complicated!
Funny thing is, for the SATs if you don't write the surname (and say you have the first name 'John') the statement of entry and the certificate will say 'John Noname'
For me the problem is a bit different. My parents named me with two 'given names' and didn't continue with the family surname. My parents have 'Nandy Majumdar' as their surname but my name is 'Shabnam Surita' and my brother is named 'Swapnil Saikat' and we have our names like these in our birth certificates and everywhere. So a lot of people assume that 'Surita' is my surname and try to convince me for it. My passport has a blank for surname, and Shabnam Surita both are placed in the 'Given/First Name' section. I think all countries should try and acknowledge various cultural possibilities of names and let people have their freedom with it. I mean if I want my child to have just one name and be legally allowed to register a child with that at birth, it should be legally acceptable everywhere without having to add a '-' or + to it for no reason whatsoever.

Every time I used to tell them about it, they would even sometimes go as far as saying that it's not possible and would doubt the authenticity of the passport. XD I used to discuss with Alina about the same thing and she would never agree. It sounds weird to just about everybody. :D
I know how it feels.. and add to my complexity, my old passport had my name wrongly written in reverse as 'Surita Shabnam' :/ I had the time of my life getting a new passport! I mean if you see more closely, naming patterns are the best maintained institutions across the world that nobody ever questions! :P

I faced this problem when I was travelling to Boston via Amsterdam. I was stopped and interrogated at Schiphol airport (Amsterdam) because they wanted to verify my credentials as I had no surname. But at the end, they were all cool and said that they usually come across such cases a lot. So, as you said it is not a big problem indeed, but I would suggest carrying some supporting documents especially when one is travelling.

If the passport is showing one name in the given name while the surname is showing blank . Whenever you are filling any document add the name shown in the given name on the passport as the family name and leave the given name blank. If you look at the MRZ it will shows one name with double
My daughter who is in US is facing this name problem. They put LNU (last name unknown) in all her documents like visa etc. (Actually her first and last names were entered together in PP, about which we were not aware of). Due to this, she is not able to apply for driving license, though she had passed her written test. When we apply for passport, we should make sure that first and last names are entered properly to avoid unnecessary problems when the person goes abroad for studies. Request all the students to be careful in this matter.
@@sachinknair4788 In usa last name is important. So instead of LNU, you can use your given name in the last name column and first name is FNU( first name unknown). For example , in my passport given name is P N Vaishnavi and surname is blank. So in this case write your last name as P N VAISHANVI and first name FNU.

Currently I am a student in Germany. Initially I got my VISA as repeated name like Anjali Kumari Anjali Kumari. But here, I have seen that in some documents they put my name as Anjali Kumari + or Anjali Kumari --- or also they have put as First name = Anjali and Surname = Kumari like in my University ID card, bank account etc. I don't think this will be a major problem right? Hey Bharat! I didn't face this problem. Even I have only my first name on my Birth Certificate but on the passport I have both my first and last name. Just like I filled it in the online form. Another problem that happens in India is Universities/Colleges here add your Father's name and sometimes also your mother's name to your name. Don't get me wrong I respect my parents and don't mind such a format but using those documents creates confusion while applying abroad (pretty much everywhere else) where such a format ain't used. Bharat in Germany! Apparently, its a ‘Pre-Approval Visa Letter’ that has been signed and given from the Immigration Office from the University Town. I received it with my admission letter package. It mainly helps in cutting down the post visa interview time to about 2-3 weeks. I was traveling to America and had a connecting flight, so I was stopped by the customs and drilled for over an hour over why no last name in my passport. Finally they made some calls and they had a security personnel with me. And when the call came through , they said I'm cleared and I could go. Quite the hassle.

Happens when you apply for US visa too. I don't have a surname on my passport either, so they will put your first name in the surname/family name column (only for the visa) and will write FNU (First Name Unknown) in the first name. And to book airline tickets you have to put LNU (Last Name Unknown) in the last name column. It's such a hassle.

Hi, Bharat. I had a question that are German Universities legally required to reply to the application or they just can hold back on the application till the date has passed? The problem is that I applied to TU Berlin and TU Chemnitz through UNI-ASSIST. I sent them documents well before their deadline(15th July). The documents were checked and I got confirmation from both Universities that they received my application from Uni-Assist on July 20th. TU Chemnitz asked me to wait for 4 Weeks or more still they sort my application. TU Berlin didn't mention any time frame but hey have a portal where I can check the status. 7 Weeks have passed since then and there is no Word on my application (neither Acceptance nor Rejection). I tried communicating this to them but there is no reply. The classes are supposed to begin from October first week and I cannot apply for a visa also within this time. So it's safe to say that my hopes for this semester are over or is there anything I can do to prevent this in future? I also noticed that these same Universities have a very low Openness Rank among German college. The reason may be this that Students don't get enough time for Visa and formality if the college takes this much time to decide.

In my country, Myanmar, we don't have family names. We only have the given name. That's problematic when I travel abroad.
In south of India also no family names, however we enter our father name as surname.

Currently I am a student in Germany. Initially I got my VISA as repeated name like Anjali Kumari Anjali Kumari.
But here, I have seen that in some documents they put my name as Anjali Kumari + or Anjali Kumari --- or also they have put as First name = Anjali and Surname = Kumari like in my University ID card, bank account etc.
I don't think this will be a major problem right? Only place where I have to careful is while filing VISA Application and Booking flight tickets as how I am filling my name. Rest cases looks ok.

Hey Bharat! I didn't face this problem. Even I have only my first name on my Birth Certificate but on the passport I have both my first and last name. Just like I filled it in the online form. Another problem that happens in India is Universities/Colleges here add your Father's name and sometimes also your mother's name to your name. Don't get me wrong I respect my parents and don't mind such a format but using those documents creates confusion while applying abroad (pretty much everywhere else) where such a format ain't used. Also, the Mumbai Consulate has troubled us a lot. #NoVisaSlots what are your thoughts on this? Bharat in Germany! Apparently, its a ‘Pre-Approval Visa Letter’ that has been signed and given from the Immigration Office from the University Town. I received it with my admission letter package. It mainly helps in cutting down the post visa interview time to about 2-3 weeks. Not sure how true this or accurate this information is but I have this document and it is in German with an authority's signature.

I was traveling to America and had a connecting flight, so I was stopped by the customs and drilled for over an hour over why no last name in my passport. Finally they made some calls and they had a security personnel with me. And when the call came through , they said I'm cleared and I could go. Quite the hassle.

Hello Bharat, very helpful video, this issue of one name is same in Pakistan , mostly girls having one name only ( like in my case ), so my only name appears as surname in passport and given name column is blank, and every time it become Nabeela, Nabeela ( very odd ), I am applying for German visa , so need guidance shall I fill up application as Nabeela Nabeela and ask invitee to issue a latter with same way ( Nabeela Nabeela ) or just Nabeela will work? please your experience will help many around the globe :)

Happens when you apply for US visa too. I don't have a surname on my passport either, so they will put your first name in the surname/family name column (only for the visa) and will write FNU (First Name Unknown) in the first name. And to book airline tickets you have to put LNU (Last Name Unknown) in the last name column. It's such a hassle.

I had a question that are German Universities legally required to reply to the application or they just can hold back on the application till the date has passed?
The problem is that I applied to TU Berlin and TU Chemnitz through UNI-ASSIST. I sent them documents well before their deadline(15th July). The documents were checked and I got confirmation from both Universities that they received my application from Uni-Assist on July 20th. TU Chemnitz asked me to wait for 4 Weeks or more still they sort my application. TU Berlin didn't mention any time frame but hey have a portal where I can check the status. 7 Weeks have passed since then and there is no Word on my application (neither Acceptance nor Rejection). I tried communicating this to them but there is no reply.
The classes are supposed to begin from October first week and I cannot apply for a visa also within this time. So it's safe to say that my hopes for this semester are over or is there anything I can do to prevent this in future?
I also noticed that these same Universities have a very low Openness Rank among German college. The reason may be this that Students don't get enough time for Visa and formality if the college takes this much time to decide.
