“Most research is not true. Even less of that research is useful. And yet what we really need right now is research that is true and useful” - Vinay ‘the boss’ Prasad

The more doctors and scientists who get censored and silenced, the quicker we get them on the side of the truth

Thank you for your courage in articulating your thoughts. If there's one thing the past 2 years has taught me, my health and well being are my own responsibility, and when they say to "trust the science", there's good science and bad science. I've become very cautious of the mainstream narrative, the authorities, big pharma, so called experts and scientists. The system is corrupt and full of inept and unethical players. Keep up your great work.

In most any "job" there is greed (money) and pride (power). But there is a difference between a job - task (replaceable) versus vocation (mission driven). The inner strength to drive, survive and thrive may be based on profit...but the greater good of another person is a higher call. I think many have lost that, working towards a greater good.

I think as a society our biggest problem is greed.
It has become what is best for me.
It used to be what is best for the patient, coworker, family member, neighbor, etc.
The fabric of society is caring for each other.
Little wonder we see it unraveling before our eyes.

We have become a much more needy society, generally. Academics have seemed to me to be driven by a nepotism-like process,. which favors "elite" grads, which is itself a result of nepotism. Now, we're seeing academia driven by "diversit", which means skin color means more than quality. And if you know you're only real qual is pigment, you're gonna need a LOT of reassurance. People like Fauci are allowed to reach their level of incompetence by being better at political maneuvering then they will ever be at medicine.

We really won't need a lot of doctors and nurses if citizens would stop consuming seed oils (vegetable oils), sugar, flour, processed food, fast food, sugar drinks (as well as fruit juice), dairy and soy products. Sounds impossible? Meat and vegetables with rice from time to time. Also, no snacking. Eat two meals within an 8hr window. It really isn't hard in western countries.

Sounds oversimplistic, but I have to agree, for many people this will probably go a looooong way. Dabbling with isolation dieting myself. Many effects of foods are quite sublte, but in aggregate, food choices are literally life changing. from mood to fitness. It can literally change your character. not possible to overstate the improtance of a correct diet. it really is at "the root" of so many issues.

What frustrates me is that the academic environment you describe (cut-throat, back-stabbing) in many ways isn’t conducive to producing the “true and useful” research that’s needed. It selects for a particular type of person with a particular set of traits and biases such as unwavering self-confidence and a tendency to ignore cognitive dissonance or moments of self-doubt and forge ahead anyway. We need more thinkers that are prepared to sit with that sometimes useful self-doubt and have the courage to ask difficult questions. You are clearly one of those brilliant few who can do it regardless - but the reality is to have a lot more academics behaving like that would indeed require a more supportive, collaborative type of environment.

Doc, I personally thank you for having the courage to speak truth. I had a nightmare experience during the last 2 years of my handicapped son's life. He passed in Feb. 2020. Nothing to do with covid. It had to do with a broken nightmarish, authoritarian medical machine. It is way more broken & I'm going to even say neglectful, uncaring, lazy & even stupid than people realize. I was with him nearly around the clock during this time. The mistakes & neglect I stood against were too much to list here. It was glaring & I could have won a lawsuit. The only thing I would not be able to re live the horror of it all in the courts. Money won't bring him back or even change the system for the better Thanks to them this old girl lives with a broken & shattered heart over what they did to my son. My best advice is take really good care of yourself so that you do not need the medical profession. Because it isn't one bit humane or even efficient.

I know that me experience and expertise isn’t exactly what you’re talking about, but it is adjacent. From my experience in public health, it’s about escaping bureaucracy. Having worked in both academia and government spaces, it’s easy to feel replaceable and also bogged down by the ability to do ACTUAL work and make actual changes that make a difference in peoples lives. Having worked with MDs/DOs/PAs in making systems changes, those folks are overworked and bogged down by mandatory paperwork, random trainings, and crazy hours. I’ve had residents say that what we are doing is incredibly valuable and effective and can make massive improvements in health and streamline care - but they just don’t have the time to make those changes.
In addition, the point you make in the inability to speak freely about issues that we see is absolutely abhorrent. We’ve been directly told to NOT speak about potential indirect costs of policies or unintended consequences. We’ve also been told to NOT target specific groups that may have higher incidence or prevalence of disease or risk factors for the disease.
So it seems as though all of these issues are about politics and bureaucracy.
I’m tired of it and I’m done. No amount of talking or making data driven efforts to actually help people is above politics or bureaucracy in healthcare or public health.
    So. I’m done. ✌️

My kids step brother contracted meningitis when he was 2. CV started when he was 7 and almost 9, now. He missed PT, ST, OT, the services he received at school for almost 2 years and had to take remote classes. He is legally blind and deaf, learning delays and other significant deficits. When he did return to school 3 days a week, masks were not easy for him to acclimate to. It was awful! Then his school didn’t want to reopen given! So many kids lost out and especially vulnerable communities. It’s unconscionable! Thank you for speaking out for all children! I will never forget how you yelled from the mountain tops to advocate for our kids! Stay encouraged!

I like the talk by T Colin Campbell where he notes that 90% of professors were tenured in the 1930’s but now only 9% of professors are tenured. Most people are working to one day be able to speak their mind but not until they become tenured unless they want to move cities or work elsewhere.
The way you speak makes me think you’re either tenured or feeling safe knowing that we have your back no matter what you do!
Thanks for sharing this truth with the world. This is exactly the reason why I got my Masters degrees and got out of academia for good. I don’t think I’d want all that pushback from the system when I can simply find another group of people to spend my time with.

Thank you Prof Prasad! Very interesting! I hope you have inspired some of these academics to get out there and say “hey, THIS is the science, at least as I see it and it’s complex and not always coextensive with the Pharma/ official public health narrative. Let’s talk about the science.” So wish there were more like you! But alas they may just want those NIH grants to keep coming and making an enemy of Fauci by questioning Tony Science may not be the best way to ensure that NIH $$ keeps flowing.

This is also true for the rest of academia. Lots of people in physics are doing things that other people chose for them, not what they want to do themselves. This is in large part due to people not knowing what they want, and just following the herd.
There is nothing good or bad about this. It just is.

No one is irreplaceable and moving from Academia to industry is not necessarily selling out or a move from the Ivory Towers. People change during their lives as does what they value. Having flexible work conditions become more valuable when you are raising a family. But I think your point is an academic career has a higher standard. Its a worthwhile pursuit if you are making a difference, treading water in academia once you've achieved tenure or become comfortable means you've betrayed your institution, your peers and the public that depends on you.
