OMG! This was such great information! I had no idea we had access to free ISBN numbers in Canada! Woah! Thank you for saving me a lot of money, grief, and a great deal of hassle! You are such a blessing! 😘😘😘😘
just writing this comment to inform you that this content is still valuable after 8 years:) just created my firs e book, uploaded to Amazon and used their free ISBN..wish I knew this video before that but no worries I will publish it on other platforms with my own ISBN..thank you so much!
This is an extremely helpful video! Thank you! But the "N" in ISBN stands for number, so it is unnecessary to say ISBN Number. However, I have learned more from this video than I have from people sitting down with me and discussing how to get one. I am now waiting for my approval. Thank you so much!
Thank you! And yes ... I realized afterward that I was redundant ... the thing with videos on UA-cam is you can't edit them after the fact so it is what it is!!
I was initially a bit disappointed that I could not simply buy american ISBNs on Bowker because it only accepted US addresses. But they cost USD$295 for 10 and these Canadian ones are free!! Nice
m`am can you please clarify more regarding legal deposit, canadians aboard or nomads can get an account on basis of their passport but how can one make a legal deposit from outside canada or can the self publisher send authors copy directly from the platform to the legal deposit address. is the legal deposit time bound? thank you for such an informative video.

Unfortunately this isn’t available for low content books like workbooks and colouring books. Do you know where to go for free ISBNs for low content books in Canada?
Question: are you able to change the publisher name after the account has been created? I rushed into creating an account before giving any forethought to registering a business name (Ontario) and I would like to add some professionalism--
Thanks SO much for this very informative video! I have a new book that I am planning to license to a commercial publishing house for marketing in the United States. If I get a Canadian ISBN for my work, will the US publisher need to get a US ISBN to publish my work there, or can they just use my Canadian ISBN?
Hello. Love your videos. Excellent resource. I have a question - I am a little uneasy about adding my home address when creating my ISBN account. I see in the "Statement of Use" that by registering with ISBN Canada, you are granting LAC permission to include your publisher name and contact information in both the Canadian ISBN Publishers' Directory and the Global Register of Publishers database (GRP). Is there another alternative to using a home address and phone number? Thank you
Hmmm I'm not sure. Some of our clients use their business address but this is sponsored by the Government of Canada and is only for Canadian residents so there is going to be an element of personal information required.
Canadian here, thanks for the video! Do I need to register a business under my name as the "publisher" and have a publishing "company" name? I noticed yours is Stick Horse or Stick House?
Welcome Alanna Winder! Thank you so much for joining the community and saying hello. You don't have to do that but I think it looks much more professional to do that. I set up Stick Horse Publishing as a ficticious business (dba) under my business corporation. You can set that up under yourself personally or corporately where ever it makes the most sense for you to own your book.
Thanks for the great video. I've already created an account, but I'm not sure what goes in the 'Notes' section when I request an ISBN for a specific title. Is this a description of the book? Is it used for anything beyond information for the LAC (i.e. will it be shared and do I need to carefully craft something?)?
Hi Julie, fellow Canadian here:) Thank you so much for this video. I’m about to register my publishing company this week but because I plan to have books for adults and children, would I have to register 2 different companies? I wouldn’t want to display the same logo used for adult content, on the children’s books. Is there a way to have a company with two divisions? Wondering how other publishers do it.
Hi Julie: I have a question? If you use the Product Form arrow, you see the word, "Book" but also you see "Hardcover" and "Paperback." In your ISBN Canada UA-cam video, you have "Book" as your product form for The New Brand You. What is the difference between the Product Form, Book or Hardcover or Paperback? I am setting up my first book and want to ensure I am using the proper product form. I thought a printed book was either a paperback or a hardcover. Thanks for your help, Rick
Hmmm Hi Rick, the screen may have changed since I filmed this video but I can tell you that you need an ISBN for every product form. So if you have a hardcover, softcover, audiobook, e-book (ISBN optional if you publish only via Kindle), and a large print version then you actually need 5 ISBNs and would enter each as the form. Hopefully that makes sense?
@@BookLaunchers Hi Julie, thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I am currently on the ISBN Canada site, Manage Logbook and it no longer has softcover in the descriptor, there is Book, Hardcover Book or paperback. I don't know if I should use Book or Paperback for my softcover book? The site does not provide any explanation.
@@BookLaunchers Hi Julie, thanks for the advice. I think your subscribers would benefit from the changes made to the book descriptors when setting up an ISBN. I will use paperback as you recommended but would love to know why the descriptors, show book, hardcover and paperback, hardcover and paperback are easy to understand, but why have a generic descriptor for book? Thanks, Rick
Hi Julie, Thanks for the video but I have one question. When I am filling out the form for the ISBN, under publisher should I put my name since I'm self publishing? Also if I am using a pen name , should I put that as the publisher name and use my real name under the contact information?
+Nawal Adamz I registered a publishing company name and had a logo designed for it - that way it looked more like a professionally published book. You can certainly use your own name though - it just is a clear indicator that it's a self-published book (not a big deal, but can impact some people's perceptions). As for the pen name - I don't have any experience with that. In the author section put the pen name but the contact name would have to be a real person ... that part doesn't get published anywhere so that should be fine I think.
Thanks a bunch! So appreciate the help. Self publishing through Amazon KDP. On this form, is there anywhere I say this? Or is all the info under Publisher Information and also Contact Person Info always my own personal info?
Hi Julie, Thanks this is great info. I just received my ISBN numbers as I would like to make a softcover and hardcover book children's book. If I am going with Create space or Ingram sparks would I need to make my own bar code or would they do it for me and place my own ISBN number into that? I was also wondering I as I just received my book layout back and should both ISBN numbers be listed on the copyright page or just the what the format is? Thanks so much Julie
You need to make your own bar code. There are free sites that will do it for you if you want. I can't post links in here for some reason so you'll have to look it up. But I think you need two versions of your copyright page and back cover so you have the appropriate ISBN in each of them! The point of having two is to distinguish the soft from the hard so that is what you should do ... easy thing for your designer to do!

do you know how to fill out the isbn form if one has a pen name? :) Do I put the pen name under the Publishers Name, and fill in the legal name in to the Contact Name? :) Thank you, I can't find this info anywhere :)
