I think people hear the word 'stockpile' and think 40,000 boxes of pasta, etc. We are all different, with different sized families and budgets. Buying a little extra is normal, wise, and a good investment. No one is advising people to go out and buy 30 cans of coffee, neither are people advised to copy your stock to a tee. People get so hung up on the little things that they miss the point: have frickin food in your house to feed the people you're responsible for. Simple. Whatever that looks like for you. Just have extra food. How hard is that message???

My mother was a WW2 Rations kid. As a result, she was a prepper before it was a thing. She always kept a good pantry, etc. She said you never know what will hit you out of left field. It has helped us when hub had to make a career change, we only had to worry about perishables, bills...not a full grocery run. It helped us out when my hub had shoulder replacement surgery. We had several thousand we haf to pay up front, plus hubs employer does not have short term disability. But, we didnt have to worry about food, meds, etc. Its another form of insurance. Do whatever you are able to. My mother taught me to do the same.

I have always stockpiled-I had 4 children and was a scratch cook. When there were shutdowns in 2020, I was able to provide groceries for three of my grown children’s families who lived nearby. The main items they requested were canned tomato products, pasta, rice and cheese. I provided several packages of TP to a neighbor.

After our cat passed a year ago, I started to save money, because I wasn't buying food, and litter, my grown adult children, asked if we were going to get another cat or two. After 1 year and clear thinking both hubby and I said no we are finished with animals, having that extra money sure has helped us in the long run. ❤

I have two thoughts about pets & vices.
Both bring satisfaction when you need comfort, but both are expensive.
Even with the Social Security COLA, a $38/mo. raise this year, but Medicare B & C took back an additional $15/mo. Then, EBT (Food Stamps for old folks) was $194/mo, but dropped to $172/mo. this year, that leaves $1 COLA increase for some Wild 'n Wicked Spending Spree for Cat food that went from $35 to $45 in 2024 or cheap wine that went for $15/bottle to $22/bottle. Needless to say, I'm not wishing the 13yo cat to die, but if she does, I will celebrate with a cheap one glass bottle of wine, because that is the best I could do 😂

During 2020, my stockpile of food, toilet paper, etc, was a lifesaver. My husband was retired and my daughter and I were considered essential workers, so we were fortunate enough to continue to have cashflow (we're in Canada). Once a month, we went to Costco and my daughter and I each spent 200-300 dollars on food and baby supplies and donated to a local food bank that our church was associated with. We were so blessed during that time and so many others were suffering. Canada didn't have the handouts of cash that the US got.

My sister lost her supply when the sewer backed up in her neighborhood. Thankfully, she had taken pictures & proudly shown them to me. The insurance company covered most of it, because she couldn't prove quantity on the shelves just an estimation. She has since made copies of my Master Inventory spreadsheet and once a month takes an inventory for shopping restock items and insurance purposes.

The fact that people keep asking how to stockpile amazes me. If you have 5 purses, 5 pairs of shoes, and so on. Do the same with food instead. It's not rocket science! And I totally get the stocking up in Wyoming. we live down past Casper.

I guess it’s because I’ve lived in a small town my whole life and there are usually benefit dinners on the weekends raising money for those who have medical issues and need medical care where the major city hospital is located is at least a 2 hour drive away. ….I think about stocking up on food so that the money I would normally need to spend on food would go to hospital needs and the food would be one less thing to worry about. - especially if family and friends are no longer around or far away, you don’t have to depend on the kindness of others. Hope this all makes sense.

THEN toss after storm season (they are made to deteriorate in the sun/landfills, so don't keep over 1 year.
If nothing else is available - add about 9 drops of fresh bleach per gallon & let stand for a few hours for drinking (look online for precautions)

I am getting ready to draw social security. My husband draws SS and army pension. We are debt free.We have small 401k and emergency fund.I have decided to invest my entire SS check. If he passes first my income drops in half.We lost our big life insurance when retired.I want to ensure I am secure and don’t leave any burden to kids. That is my most important prep.

Why do people worry about things beyond their control? It’s such a waste of time, and that’s coming from someone who suffers from anxiety! Also, why worry about expiration dates? Maybe it’s the Gen X in me, but before we had those dates, we still opened cans and ate the food.

We don't earn more than we spend, if we suddenly need our money for something, we have allways food at home, so we don't have to spend money for food. We have had since year 2000. No stress about how to feed the family.

i am thinking people eat way too much on a daily basis. Grew up with severe food insecurity. A sand witch a day. for years. I'm 60 and healthy and living fine.

$5,000 in the bank will lose its value with inflation.
Pay as many bills ahead as possible. Buy and stockpile sale items. Buy bulk and re-package for long term. Learn to cook from scratch and purchase raw ingredients in bulk. Flour, wheat berries, sugar, and so on.

$5000 may as well be a million for many people. This is not realistic!

@GussiedUp10 What does SHTF mean? When you have Celiac, there is no eating what you want! It's eat gluten free or die! I eat low carb to help my PCOS.
