The very best paper towel is the one from Sam's Club; called Super Premium Towels, bright orange wrappings: 15 mega rolls for 19.99; I have never found ANY that beats those. Sam's sell out so fast, it's unbelievable...can't be beat.

I was a high school science teacher and one of my first activities with ninth graders was a paper towel comparison. They had to measure the area of each sheet provided, then dunk the towel in graduated cylinder and determine how much was absorbed. The comparison was the ml of water taken up divided by the square centimeters of the towel for each sample. It was often a challenge to get them to understand the importance of the calculation to remove the size of the towel from the test. Bounty always did best and the school bathroom towels the worst. i usually had Sparkle and a store brand in as other samples. By the way, I do not use many paper towels, have a nice supply of old washcloths instead.

In all fairness, some of those towels were perforated so that you can take a half or a whole. For example you said the bounty took 6, they were halves so it was actually just 3 towels.

I use very few paper towels. I keep a basket of cheap kitchen rags from DT on counter. I use as table napkins as well. If they get stained I toss in rag box for painting clean ups. I use to go thru at least a roll every week or so when family was home until I moved them off the counter. Now few rolls a year. After all you have a dishwasher, washer & dryer.

I bought kitchen towels that snap together and go onto a paper towel holder from Amazon. I can just toss them into the washer when they're dirty. It took a while to switch from paper towels to the cloth ones, but I've saved a lot of money and cut down on my garbage.

I save my old cotton towels for rags. I only use paper towels to drain bacon or sausage and to wipe grease out of frying pans so grease stays out of drain. Our last house had to have all the kitchen pipes replaced because the last owner had let lots down drain. So much grease in pipes hardly drain water anymore

There’s a service I saw once that essentially takes a rotating brush and wet vac thru your clean outs to scrub off the sides for instances like this. I’m not sure about cost or even how long they’ve been around but it was interesting… might beat the hassle and cost of pipe replacement if it ever happens again. If a whole business exists apparently it’s a common issue!

Instead For oil I use chamies; just run it under hot water, squeeze out the water - wipe up the oil and saturate the towel with dawn dish soap rub it together to foam up and rinse out under hot water and reuse again for what ever.. . & for windows and such I finish with newspapers crumbled up. As for subs for paper towels I a "re-useable" paper towel that I found on Amazons. Now in over a year still haven't used even 1 roll of them either. A bunch of liquid I’d use my towels. I generally use paper when it’s something nasty that I want to go straight to garbage. Although you are definitely make me take another step towards stingy. 😂 Interesting side note I learned recently at work. The Viva towels are used by cake decorators. They get the icing smooth, but then lay the paper towel right on it and they can pat it smooth and then peel it off. I watched her do it. I guess it’s a nice finish in some cases.

    • @jeannel1065
      @jeannel1065 5 днів тому +2

Viva has two finishes. One textured like most paper towels; the other is smooth similar to a well-worn cotton cloth (likely what cake decorators use). I paint with watercolor and use the smooth Viva to blot out realistic cloud shapes from a wet blue paint on watercolor paper.

Worn out or stained towels, washcloths, sheets and T-shirts become rags. I throw them away if they’re too gross to wash. I wash rags with dirty mop heads and bath rugs every few weeks. Paper towels are good for pet messes and greasy messes. For water spills or leaks, I am likely to grab a good kitchen towel or even a good bath towel.

I was so happy to see you do this video! Since I retired I haven't been able to afford paper towels, but I've been thinking I would like to get some if and when I can afford to and I've been wondering which ones were the best. I have gotten use to using microfiber cloths now and old t-shirts I've cut up, but it would be nice to be able to wipe out grease and throw it away... which I have done with the old t-shirts. Probably about 15 years ago I bought about 12 very heavy 100% cotton napkins for a $1 a piece at Target and I never used them all these years! UNTIL I retired and couldn't afford paper towels. I have used them for grease and for getting all the water out of cooked spinach etc... the napkins are all white and some are white with a purple flower in the middle... I have used them for grease and to get all the water out of spinach (that turned them green)... I put them in the sink and put some dawn dish soap on them and then added hot water just to cover and let them soak over night and they were clean in the morning. I rinsed them well and then put them in the laundry.

Before washing the mess with the hole-y pair of underwear out of the rag drawer, holler at the dog to get his full of the ruins, then gather the shells and lay them on an old newspaper or paper sack. Throw shells and paper into the garden, birds and chicks eat the shells to keep their bones strong, remainder shells break down to add mulch and nutrients to the garden. Grab the hole-y underwear soak with hot water, a blurb of bleach and dawn, scrub the fridge out first, then the floor, then throw it away.👍

I cut up old baby cotton swaddlers from the thrift store, they are 100% cotton and don't leave streaks on mirrors, I also knit my own dish cloths and have used the same ones for over 10 years. We use face cloths for napkins, I have 4 real cotton napkins for guests, ( thrift store always have them ) I hang the used dish cloth over night to dry so it doesn't get smelly until wash day. We use old paper bags and the brown stuffing from the shipping company to drain bacon and fries. In a pinch we drain food on the cookie rack over the cookie sheet pan and use newspaper to wipe the grease and throw it in the trash not down the drain. The free newspaper is good for wet floors after it rains or snows, also I have used them for messy food that goes straight into the trash ( fish and meat that will stink up the kitchen ). Orange and lemon peels go in a jar with vinegar to make a cleaner, sometimes dried orange peel is grated to add to banana loaf.

Why didn't you just use water instead of expensive milk? Maybe I missed that part?

When my mother wiped up water off a countertop or table with a paper towel, she would dry it out and use it again. It was only water so why throw it out.

I had a spill like that this week. I dropped one to stop it from going into the next room and then down with some cotton rags. I'm learning. I realized I now have to keep a stash of old rags in the kitchen.

I buy 1 giant package of Costco brand every 2-3 years because I do not use them to wipe my hands or anything that a cloth towel can handle. I mainly use them for food when cooking. Also, I don't let company use them by hiding them before they show up 😆It's amazing how you get that look from someone when you say "Use the cloth dish towel" 😂🤑 I'm about to cry over all that spilt milk 😂

You would need to use a bowl of hot, soapy water to clean the egg shell mess up anyway. Otherwise, it would dry a sticky mess.

For the nasty stuff. Dog poo etc it’s worth the cost for the paper towel and throw away! But that’s rare.

I use paper towel only on things that would stain my towel like beet juice or on my cast iron pans. FYI before I throw a wash rag for washing body in bathroom I wipe bathroom down too before putting into laundry

The big paper towel sheet should be counted as two paper towels.
Same size as the other single sheets.
Plus you have to add the cost of the water to wash 🧼

I used reusable paper towels and only use paper towels for draining bacon grease. The last time I bought paper towels or toilet paper was in 2020. I also have reusable toilet paper that I use for number 1 only and toilet paper for number two. I bleach my reusable toilet paper in the wash, and I save on toilet paper.

I’m assuming Kirkland is cheapest, even with including the cost of the membership?
Questions: can you microwave your dish cloth or sponge to sterilize it? Obviously, not ones with meat, eggs, etc. bacteria?
Can you wash rags in washer in cold water without laundry sanitizer or bleach? What would you use as your laundry sanitizer?
