The gunlance is easily my favorite weapon in the game. For anyone still trying to play with gunlance but can't seem to get it, I'll throw you a couple of tips! Normal shots are just that, normal. Shelling and full bursts are pretty well rounded, and normal shot gunlances are typically the most accessible. Wide shots are great for charged shots, and long shots utilize a powerful wyvern fire. The upward swing is quite possibly one of the gunlance's most useful and versatile attacks, it can be used in place of a lance slam and can be back hopped or side stepped out of... Using the X+X+XA combo followed by a side step can turn the gunlance into a rather mobile weapon, and the ability to fire a shell after an upward swing can normally knock monsters to the ground from a wall, ceiling, or as they are trying to fly off. With enough practice, it can be a devastating little weapon, and has the stopping power of shelling, the nimble lance strikes, and defensive power of the shield. A+!
Just for those who are interested in the shots: Basically (or how it allway was. don't know if X changed it) Long: Bonus dmg on your Wyvern fire. Normal: Bonus dmg on your full burst. Wide: Bonus dmg on your charged shots. Normal mostly use the full bursts and have a below average weapon dmg. Long mostly uses wyvern fire and after that goes for non shelling attacks. Wide mostly uses Charged shots. Some gunlances (Like the MH4u molten tigrex one) are extremely usefull if even if you ONLY use shelling. And the best skill for all types is: Artillery. (Except for some Long GLs)
+Bass-D C In that sense: I assume that Striker should be good for Long and Wide gunlances. But not Normal. Areal should be nice for Long and Normal, but not Wide. Bushido/Adept should be nice for Normal and Long. But not wide. Guild should be neat for Normal, Lond and wide.
for anyone thinking of using gunlance the burst after the slam does have separate damage modifiers depending on the shot type normal shells do significantly more damage when fired this way while long and wide do less than normal when fired this way
Two notes that weren't touched on in this video. First, it is possible to replace the ledge-jump thrust attack with a slam without first doing a shot. While the weapon is sheathed, jumping off a ledge then holding R while pressing X will perform a slam as opposed to a thrust. Useful if you're running around to look for a chance to mount, and it cuts out the need to shell first. Second, and this one is big, your heat gauge DOES NOT reset after Wyvern Fire comes off cooldown. It can be very easy in the middle of a fight to not realize the gauge is rising again and accidentally overheat your lance.
I want point our real quick that you can use the Dragon's Breath (Wyvern's Breath) hunter art after a wyvernfire to move the gauge and get an extra powerful hit if needed
The type of gunlance picked up depends on shelling or playstyle ultimately: -Wide shot or people who are used to evade lancing should do Striker. (Or if you're like me, you just hate the heavy slam.) -Long shot should use Adept, as it tends to have higher base damage and reloading isn't as big of a problem as wide. -Normal or guard lancing is good for Guild and Aerial as attacking with a full burst right after a shot deals heavy punishment.
+Michael Bunn No way. Dual blades absolutely rely on speed, and without it, dual blades can be one of the more stale weapons in the game. Gunlance utilizes cutting damage (opposed to piercing like a normal lance), can deal explosive damage with shelling, and along with the lance has the best shield in the game. I main gunlance and have been since 3U... I branched out a bit in 4U but I have a feeling that with Generations, I'll be focusing on funlance all over again!
Then you might be interested to know that being red in the gauge is a really tiny damage increase, about 5% I believe. Orange is 0%, and yellow is -10% or 15% (forget which). So its pretty awful. Shell damage was decreased by 20% in this game (according to this source kkhk22.seesaa.net/article/431581408.html) , for no apparent reason since it was already pretty much nothing. GL was nerfed pretty badly in MHGen. Its still a lot of fun, of course, but it hurts to know that your damage is so pitiful for no reason other than someone at Capcom really doesn't like the thing. Meanwhile GS continues to be buffed.
+Magmafrost13 GS actually got a slight nerf this time around. Its level 3 charge took a nerf (110 -> 100) and there were a couple nerfs on other attacks that you'd hardly ever use. Funny how even the developers don't understand what makes the weapon so effing powerful; it's not the GS's base damage output, it's how easy it is to cram damage skills on the thing. I mean, +10 skill points is all it takes to get a 125% damage boost (Critical Draw). Though that being said, I'm not sure if the super skills make up for the slight nerfs.
+Andrew D. Reposting since I deleted my comment accidentally. Mobility is everything in 4U. SnS and DB have great sheathing and movement speed plus incredible DPS. Either weapon class can easily kill G Rank rare species in like 3 minutes. Those killtimes would be incredibly difficult to pull off with the GL, if they're even possible at all. It just isn't a great weapon class with how fast monsters are at G Rank in 4U. The fixed shelling damage hurts it too. The weapon would be a lot stronger if the shells' damage scaled from raw like the CB phials.
Awesome vid! I think personally I would go with striker as I love all the hunter arts for the gunlance. Plus, the removal of the slam is a bonus for me since I hated how slow it was. Striker seems to give it a little more speed and makes it that much easier to evade gunlance lol.
It's basically MHFU's GL, with quick reload and 3 Hunting Arts... Striker it's nice, but not when using Normal Shot type Gunlance... the shotgun slam really was useful, to cause massive damage with all the shells at once.
+ShadowBlazeroPT True on all points. While I agree that for normal type gunlances it was extremely useful and powerful, it wasn't that helpful for spread/wide type gunlances, which I prefer over the others. Striker offers a faster and more efficient combo for getting shots off for wide types while giving you a massive damage output, especially with the three incredible arts
Nice in depth analysis overall, however there is one thing I think could have been mentioned and that I found out by pure accident: the blast dash can count as a mounting attack. after something like 5 or so blast dashes at a Seltas queen when soloing it, all ending in a slam, I actually initiated a mount (using striker style for reference, my preferred style). First time I found out about this I was accidentally stealing a mount from my friend with an Insect Glaive, which is the first time my shout out was actually legit "Howd I get here?"
Arekkz, before the haters get to you I thought I'd tell you that you missed a few things. If you do the forward+X attack off a ledge, you'll jump off and do a slam with short distance (at least in 4U; don't know if it's in striker) which then can go full burst. And for mechanics, gunlance has no super-armor and each shot type was not talked about aside from vague magazine size. Each has a different strength in shelling, wide for normal and charged shots, long for wyvern fire, and normal for full burst. And as a warning: shelling knocks people around, especially wide shot types, full burst, and wyvern fire, so be careful online. Otherwise, it was a great guide.
You can sidestep to do a full reload as well. Making the full reload still accessible in Aerial style. Also you can also follow up with a walking forward thrust after firing a shot into the air. I've never found any use for that but it's there.
Well, Striker Gunlance has my attention. I started Freedom Unite with the Gunlance, which I sucked at, and later games I just used the Lance. The speed the Lance gives is the key to my enjoyment, as well as the excellent defense in both evade and guard, and the changes to the Gunlance look like they take the fun parts of the Lance and add some explosive flair.
+Mark LaFrancis I was actually about to say "Who in their right mind would use Striker". I'm no expert, nor in MH nor in Gunlance, but Fullburst can be too big of a thing to give up. Maybe with spread type since the damage isn't a lot. I guess you're right though, it could be fun for people trying to come over from Lance.
+Veloci Blecco The Fullburst does less damage per shell with the Wide GL, compared to normal Shelling. So giving up the Fullburst isn't a big deal for them. Normal is the opposite, in that it does more damage per shell with the Fullburst, compared to normal Shelling and would take a heavy hit if unable to use it. Long falls in the middle, with the Fullburst doing as much per shell as normal Shelling, so it comes down to whether you want to unleash all your shells at once or focus on physical attacks, shelling when openings present themselves.
+Mark LaFrancis Striker GL, being based on the FU version, should undo the changes made in MH4, reverting it back to have quicker physical attacks and a longer interval between repeated shelling, which makes it a lot more like the Lance with some added flair. Problem is, they lack the triple back hop/side evade than Lances have, so if going from Lancing to Gunlancing it's easier if you were a Guard Lancer.
Arhen Dante Yeah exactly. Again, outside of new gunlancers, probably Wide is the only one that could give up Fullburst. That's probably good, I didn't like Wide as much as Long and Normal right now. Maybe it'll help.
+Arhen Dante Good thing my favorite kind of Lance is Guard Lance. Ain't nothing more satisfying than facing down a big baddy and just taking their worst, all the while shrugging it off.
Gaijin Hunter did a good explaination of the different GL styles. The tl;dr version, is that Wide is best for simple shelling; Long is best for Shell, WF, and then poke, and Normal is best for spamming Full Burst.
that blast dash gives GL users a very handy ability for closing in on targets... might go bushido though. that upswing+reload into burst is my kind of thing :D
I think that guild will make me right at home with the Gunlance. can't wait to try it.note that if the gunlance is normal you will want to use full burst more then anything else so striker is not good for that. great video as always.
+Hassan Almaskeen striker looks like itll work more for long or wide........ i can see LOTS of people using that wyvern's breath special on it to compensate for the alck of the shotgun slam + burst
Having already played around a bit with GL in Cross, I personally like switching between striker and aerial style, since I really like the hunter arts that come with it, also you can do a full burst with striker style, but only with the blast dash hunter art. Only thing I didn't know was how exactly the heat gauge worked on the upper left corner. Anyway, gunlance has become way more fun to play and it feels more mobile than it did in 4U.
It seems all the styles except Striker work well with Normal GL's. Striker works best with Long & Wide. Adept & Aerial works well with Long and can work well with Wide, as long as you don't do the Full Bursts(assuming Wide Full Bursts still have reduced damage and eat through Sharpness, especially since you'd be doing less damage per shell while eating through as much sharpness as normal shelling). Also you should have been a bit more specific when talking about the gauge and mentioned that the length of the Yellow, Orange & Red segments change depending on the Shot type of the GL.
Normal has 5 shots and does the least damage per shot, but it gets a 10% increase in damage when doing a full burst after a slam. For example, a Lv.3 Normal GL does 18 damage per shell + 6 Fire(which only helps against monsters weak to Fire) and a full burst would do 19(rounds down) damage per shell, so 5 shells would be 95 damage. Artillery Novice Increase damage by 10% and Expert increase it by 20%; so a 5 shell full burst would be 105(Novice: 18 * 1.1 * 1.1 rounded down to 21 per shell) and 115(Expert: 18 * 1.1 * 1.2 rounded down to 23 per shell).
Long has 3 shots and does a medium amount of damage per shot and does 20% more damage whit Wyvern Fire. A Lv.3 Long GL does 28 damage per shell + 14 Fire and it's WF would 48*4(compared to 40*4 for Normal and Wide) damage. With Artillery Novice and Expert: WF would be 52*4(Novice: 48 * 1.1 rounded down) and 57*4(Expert: 48 * 1.2 rounded down). For comparison, the full burst with Artillery Expert would do 99(28 * 1.2 rounded down per shell).
Wide only has 2 shots, but does more damage per shot and does 25% more damage on charge shots(base is 20%), compared to Long & Normal; however, it does 10% less per shell when doing a full burst. For example, a Lv.3 Wide GL does 40 damage per shell + 10 Fire and a charged shot would do 58 damage(40 * 1.45 rounded down). For comparison, a Normal charged shot would do 21(18 * 1.2 rounded down) damage and Long would do 33(28 * 1.2 rounded down) damage. A Wide full burst however would only do 72(40 * 0.9 rounded down per shell) and it eats through more sharpness(at least in 4U) than 2 normal or charged shots.
Each shelling type also has a different Heat Gauge. There's the Wide version seen in the video, the Normal is similar but has a longer Orange; if the Wide one is 24 Yellow, 32 Orange 24 Red, then the Normal is likely more around 26 Yellow, 30 Orange, 24 Red or something to that extent. It's really not much of a difference. Long on the other hand, appears to be along the lines of 30 Yellow, 20 Orange, 30 Red. Lastly each shelling type has a different range for there shells, which can be seen here vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/monsterhunter/images/2/2b/Gunlance_Shot_Type_Diagram.png/revision/latest?cb=20140409055244 This should help until Gaijin or Arekkz make a proper video going over this.
Y'know, I was nearly put off this series by the MH3U demo on 3DS, but your videos have completely revived my interest in MH. Aerial GL with blast dash looks so much like my kind of play style -- and the GL was one of the few weapons in the 3U demo that didn't just piss me off xD Can you blast dash in the air?
It seems that Arekkz didn't give tips for the different types of shelling that the GL has. Normal, Spread (aka. Wide) and Long, as I researched before, use their shots better in different ways. If I'm still correct, the best damage each shot type deals is as follows: Normal: Slam Unload, because of the 5 ammo, it deals the most damage compared to the other types. Spread (Wide): Standard shots. Apparently, Spread is the worst type for using Wyvern's Fire compared to the others. However, its standard shots are the best because of the sheer damage it deals due to the lack of ammo and small (but wide) hitbox. Long: Charged shots (R+A) and Wyvern's Fire. The long hitbox also helps, and it having 3 shells is pretty useful compared to Spread's 2. I'm not saying you shouldn't use Wyvern's Fire with Spread or use what I specified, but I researched from 4U, dunno if it still stands or not. Most things were carried over from there, so...
it's easier to think they all have a bonus applied to one feature. for Normal, it's full burst. For Long, it's Wyvern Fire (strictly). For Spread, it's charged shots. Don't overcomplicate it, haha.
Wide type Gunlance's Wyvern Fire is just as strong as the Normal type's, but the Full Burst is awful, that's the one move you want to avoid with this type. Wyvern Fire is completely fine. Wide also benefits more from Charged shots, going from (I believe) a 1.2x modifier to a 1.45x modifier. It's not mandatory, but it's good for a good burst of concentrated fixed damage.
Laggalot101 Yeah, uh, I forgot that the Hunter's Notes actually contain advice for the different shot types XD Gladly, it seems that my Normal advice is still correct, just Full Burst for the most damage. Wide benefits more from Charged shots more than anything else, and I still think that the standard shots are also pretty good. However, Long Shots are also strong in the subject of Wide, but not AS strong. In exchange, Wyvern's Fire is the best of all the other shot types.
ARREKZ, I understand that you liked a montage in Japanese that was a person shooting monsters out of the air and timing attacks to knock them out. Can you please let me know!!
Whoa, hang on, didn't you miss the burst attack you can do after leaping off a ledge and firing a shot in guild style? You can do that guard jump, shot, slam, burst. It is pretty sick. **Edit: Alright, I see you mentioned it elsewhere, just not in the first section. I'll let it slide this time :P**
Personally i'd think this weapon would be a little op with the stats it had in 4U. I mean, i just killed a Gammoth in 4 minutes with low rank stuff, but if you shave 35% off of that time, it gets lowered down to slightly above 2 minutes.
+Theros Rex yeah, its muscle habit to a lance user to press x thrice, dodge, repeat, so having a triple poke just helps with the transition for a lance user because of the already similar attacks becoming more so, without removing the gun part of gunlance
Erm, quick question. Either you forgot to mention that you can do a forward lunge off a ledge to go for a slam straight away, or it doesn't exist this game. Which one is it?
Man, for me the gunlance has always been 'that one really fuckin' cool weapon that I just can't wrap my head around'. Like, I can succeed with it, I can swing it and things will die, it's just I've always felt like I'm missing something because my kill times are so much worse than with just about any other blademaster weapon. I'm hoping I can fix that with Generations.
Andy Zheng Ok, I understand, but you know I'd actually like for the demo to come out a few weeks before the main game just to try out everything. I dunno if I can master my possible main in 9 days
That doesn't seem too cost effective... Shelling tends to cause FAR less damage in terms of full bursting... Even the 3 charged shots don't matter all that much.
OK, so when the gauge is locked, you can't use wyvernfire. So does the artillery skill affect the cool down the locked gauge? Since the MH4U gunlance could have a cool down of 80 seconds when combined with the "artillery god" armor skill and the "bombardier" food skill till the next use of your wyvernfire. Or will the cool down for wyvrenfire always be 2 minutes, (if so then a lot of long gunlance users will be a bit annoyed)
Bad news. No G Rank so no sign of Artillery God. Only extends to expert. Same for everything else too. I'm currently looking for info on good armor so any armor builders out there please put some suggestions.
You can choose your hunting style at any time other than during a quest. You can get some hunter arts at start but there are others that you must unlock.
Can you still push R+X mid-air to slam instead of air-poke, like in MH4U, or are mid-air slams exclusive to Aerial? Also: does shell type (normal long or wide) affect any of the gunlance hunting arts? (obviously not the gauge buff)
The heat gauge isn't nearly as cool as you might think. If you compare the gunlance's motion values to those of 4U's: Yellow: -10% Orange: ~the same as 4U's Red: +5% And that's not all. Every single shell attack got hit by a -20% nerf. Which was completely unnecessary to say the least.
Well, that does constitute a nerf, if you're an individual obsessed with power. Honestly the shelling damage, being fixed damage was a bit high in previous games and because of that, it led people to nothing but spamming the FB's, WF's, and Charged Shots. Seeing as Capcom wanted a balance between shelling and non shelling, they were bound to lower the base shelling damage. The MV's being weaker in Yellow, also isn't that big a deal unless you overheat the gauge and the MV's for Orange are either the same as 4U or slightly stronger. Not really a nerf, unless, like I said before, you were too used to the power.
You're kidding, right? Shelling did piss all damage in previous games. There's a reason no one ever used it in speed runs or anything outside of recreational use. People that spam shells obviously never took the time to look up how little damage they actually did. It's so little to the point where you'd be better off not using shells period. And now that we're forced to use an underpowered mechanic to make sure our damage doesn't fall flat, that's a huge nerf.
Gunlance wasn't in Tri unless you count that DLC lance with a gunlance skin. I'll admit it was quite potent throughout third gen, though. However it did take quite a big nerf from 3U to 4U due to one of its most used attacks getting a substantial reduction in power and the overall speed of its pokes being slowed down without their power being adjusted to the slower speed.
The way holding forward when pressing X makes you do that mini-charge is totally messing with me. I'm just trying to do a triple-combo or something and my guy just charges into the monster instead - or past it! Infuriating to the max. Really wish the "scoop charge" was only on unsheat+forward instead....
Oh yeah. To anyone reading this, know I'm looking for Guard Boost (or anything that lets me block unblockable attacks), artillery, maybe even sharpness, and something for keeping my guard up.
So is there any weapon that actually benefits from Striker style? I get that 3 hunting arts is appealing, but it seems every weapon either loses out on one of it's big damage attacks or loses some shortcut that allows the weapon to flow better.
+ClockworkHeart42 The sword and shield and the charge blade both benefit. For sword and shield, you lose a pretty useless move for the 3 arts and for charge blade you lose the shield bash (which isn't too bad since you want to avoid yellow shield) but axe mode for charge blade gets a hidden 5% damage boost.
in bushido style (and this applies to cb and lance as well) if you do r+x+a to draw into a guard, do you still get the bushido guard or does it come out normally?
So i heard, that all weapons (even Light bowguns and slower weapons like gun lance) are made very viable in solo play and have roughly the same clear time. Would i have to abuse mechanics and min~max to get good clear times on Gun-lance or is it just made more viable to play it however you want? I really liked defensive-shelling in Mh4u but i started to time out in G rank solo, even when playing aggressively, while i could clear the same G-rank missions with other weapons at my disposal WAY faster. I get, that gunlance is slow and defensive but i think it should also be more powerful, since it felt bottom tier in solo play, like the light bowgun did. So are the changes notable and are the weapons finally all able to solo in approximately fair times?
+SchwarzpulverCoffee I mean, the weapon is called "Fun-lance" at times, so i want to use it the way i want (shelling and blocking, while pocking a bit from time to time) and i kind of just want to know if it is viable in solo. More aggressive monsters like zinogre are really fun to turtle-tank against with guard boosts.
Do you need to have the lance heated in order to be useful (Like the longsword's spirit slash)? Or do you still do normal amounts of damage without it?
i love gunlances especially since they stopped being garbage since MH3U...but i am struggling to get the hang of the heat meter, seems whenever i get it in the red zone, i either overshoot it and overheat, or i wyvern fire with not enough built up to stay in the red zone...guess i should take some time to actually really practice lol using a lvl 1 Red Devil Gunlance (Tetsucabra) and while it has some small drawbacks its the hardest hitting weapon ive even got so far in terms of Raw damage at 120...everything else i got is ranging from 70 to 100 Raw...so sure the -20% affinity is a small drawback, but the weapon is performing exceptionally well, its also got lvl 2 Shelling which is better than any other Gunlance i have atm but the heat meter mechanic is proving difficult to consistently do good with lol
Here's a good rule of thumb for the heat gauge. This is assuming that you have Normal shot, as I don't know if wide or long build up heat differently. With Normal shells, 3 full bursts is enough to reach the red zone, but it will need extra shelling (typically 2-3 shots) before Wyvern Fire can lock the heat gauge into red. Secondly, a full burst from anywhere in red other than possibly it's lowest point will result in overheating. If you hit red and can't use Wyvern Fire, avoid using a full burst until you are in the orange. Again, I don't know if Wide or Long shots heat up differently, but that's my general rule for gunlance.
Dramatic_Gaming for Normal-type shelling that sounds about right in terms of how much it takes, im getting way better at it but still not quite perfect cus each time you attack with t he gunlance sans shelling, it decreases the meter a bitt, so if you fail a full burst after a slam for whatever reason (usually the monster but ive had my friend interupt it plenty cus shes really gung-ho with blademaster weapons) burt yeah, 3 full bursts with Normal-type seems to put you near the brder then 2-3 non-charged shells tends to max you out i still sometimes misjudge it and get an overheat but thats becoming far less common lol course the Dragon Flame hunting art is also good for this cus it can be used even during Overheat and will STILL maximize and re-lock the meter
If you're still having trouble maintaining the Heat Gauge, try to get Artillery Novice/Expert on your set. It does so much for the Gunlance, it's not even funny: - Increased shelling damage. - Wyvernfire will lock the heat gauge for a shorter amount of time (meaning Wyvern Fire becomes more abusable). - Natural decay of the heat gauge is slowed down to 2/3 at Novice and 1/3 at Expert compared to the original rate. - When the Heat Gauge is at or near red, Full Bursts will build LESS heat than usual, decreasing the risk of overheat. - Wyvernfire knocks the Heat Gauge down less, making it easier to lock the gauge into red. - The skill will also sometimes blatantly prevent your Gunlance from overheating. Unless it's already at the very end of the gauge, a shelling attack that would normally push the gauge over the edge might not. Maintaining the gauge with this skill becomes almost a breeze. What's not to love here, really?
Laggalot101 thanks for that tip, didnt know that skill did anything with the Heat Gauge, im not having much trouble anymore maintaining it after tons of practice, but ill try and get that skill via armor/gems anyway cus thats still really useful
Heat Gauge is a sin, nerfed the weapon which is niche already and subpar since the gun part doesn't escale later in the game, literally doesn't make sense.
+Lightning Edwin nothing but red sharpness prevents you from shelling. "Locking" the gauge by any means will see the heat cursor flashing, and you can't use Wyvern Fire when it's flashing that's all. You can still use shelling. You can "lock" the gauge by using the Wyvern Fire, the Wyvern Breath hunting art, or continue shelling when you cursor is at the maximum (and will lock the cursor back to the lowest and that's bad). Not sure why that has anything to do with the "slam and boom" combo.
+Greg Bugden you should be able to, i recall one of the trailers demonstrating blast dash on tigrex, and he does a burst after the slam. its also important to note that you take no damage while rushing the target. in said trailer the person dashed through rocks tiggy sent at him
I love this weapon, but holy crap have I always had a hard time using it! I kind-of wish there was some way to make it more maneuverable or something. Having a weapon that just blows shit up is awesome, but the sluggish nature of the weapon just doesn't feel like it's for me at all because I just end up taking hits like crazy. Any advice would be appreciated.
Gunlance is my favorite weapon but the ruined it I can chain reloads or wyvern Fire without getting penalized I don't think I'll be using it in MHG! It's RUINED!
Perhaps you didn't understand Arekkz in the video, but once you Wyvern Fire, the heat gauge freezes until you can Wyvern Fire again. This means stabbing and shelling freely without anything holding you back.
+the bonesauce the aerial style in general seems to compliment the normal gl more.
I like it how the weapons in striker-style become similar to the weapons in freedom unite :D
+Elesterion Bushido GL seems to be like FUs playstyle as well, remember the ability to spam 5 shots in a row?
*Sees Gunlance tutorial*
*Heavy breathing sets in*
I AM DROPPING EVERYTHING TO WATCH THIS RIGHT FUCKING NOW!
+SketchBookShortFilms Same
So funny. There not so many main gl players. But all of them have strong relationship to their weapon. I would share my bed with gl
schwumpi I don't think my Greatsword would fit in my bed. I guess that's what I get for saving my money and buying a couch
+schwumpi firing wyvern fire before going to bed sure keeps you warm on a cold night.
Just for those who are interested in the shots:
Basically (or how it allway was. don't know if X changed it)
Long: Bonus dmg on your Wyvern fire.
+Bass-D C In that sense:
I assume that Striker should be good for Long and Wide gunlances. But not Normal.
Areal should be nice for Long and Normal, but not Wide.
Bushido/Adept should be nice for Normal and Long. But not wide.
Guild should be neat for Normal, Lond and wide.
for anyone thinking of using gunlance the burst after the slam does have separate damage modifiers depending on the shot type
normal shells do significantly more damage when fired this way while long and wide do less than normal when fired this way
I would like to point out striker style does not truly lose the slam. You have access to the slam and full burst via blast dash.
+Arekkz Gaming one small thing you forgot is that you can do a Wyvernfire after any shotgun (full burst) explosion by pressing X+A!
can we do that in MH4U?
+Zaril Boo yeah you can, but the Shotgun Slam sends you WAY back, so if you're against a wall, it works well
+ShadowBlazeroPT the damage that u can do with a level 4 normal gunlance is off the charts then O.O
Finally!! Adept gunlance with Ultra Wyvernfire for sure!!
The type of gunlance picked up depends on shelling or playstyle ultimately:
-Wide shot or people who are used to evade lancing should do Striker. (Or if you're like me, you just hate the heavy slam.)
-Long shot should use Adept, as it tends to have higher base damage and reloading isn't as big of a problem as wide.
-Normal or guard lancing is good for Guild and Aerial as attacking with a full burst right after a shot deals heavy punishment.
All of my YES~ best melee weapon for last boys!~ and those hunter arts be looking fly as hell right now
+Michael Bunn
No way.
+the bonesauce one person's opinion lol i prefer bows, sns, and duals cause IMO theyre the best weapons in game
It counts as a slam so you can also unload your shells after the dash, which i believe he didn't cover in the video.
I love that blast dash art
one other cool thing is you can do wyvern fire after the slam or at least you could in 4 by pressing x+a after the slam
I think you can still do it in MHGen
Otherwise, it was a great guide.
also sidestep after full burst
+Dw7freak (X+A) has super armor, as well as wyvern's fire, lance slam has too, charged shelling.
Arhen Dante
Yeah exactly.
I like that arrexz chose the one gunlance that looks like a lance for the thumbnail
What seems to be uncommon knowledge is that you can use Wyvern's fire out of a slam by pressing X + A instead of A.
I like the added rant gesture there with the Overheat its like
"God, F***in, Dammit, S***, F***, GAH!"
As a gunlance user, I can confirm that feeling. Slamming and then bursting to knock over the monster only to realize I've overheated is the worst.
Pray you have Dragon Breath ready or close to ready when that happens.
YES. IVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS
I think you forgot to mention that it's possible to go into wyvern fire after the slam, but still a great guide!
that blast dash gives GL users a very handy ability for closing in on targets... might go bushido though. that upswing+reload into burst is my kind of thing :D
"And also not forgeting the triple x combo" : )
Awesome Vid! *w* The Blast Dash looks so coooll!!
As someone looking to get MHG for the ds coming from World, gunlance in this game seems to solve all the issues I have with it in world!
Just got my 3ds not sure wich mh game to buy mh4u or this one :D in mhw i loved the gunlance
After looking it over some more, I'd have to say Striker is my favorite, with Aerial as second.
good taste in gunlance btw. Who cares about being optimal with something that goddamn awesome.
I don't care for the gunlance but it presents itself so badass
Please explain the various shell types in gunlances
BEST WEAPON!
Y'know, I was nearly put off this series by the MH3U demo on 3DS, but your videos have completely revived my interest in MH. Aerial GL with blast dash looks so much like my kind of play style -- and the GL was one of the few weapons in the 3U demo that didn't just piss me off xD
Can you blast dash in the air?
It seems that Arekkz didn't give tips for the different types of shelling that the GL has. Normal, Spread (aka. Wide) and Long, as I researched before, use their shots better in different ways. If I'm still correct, the best damage each shot type deals is as follows:
Normal: Slam Unload, because of the 5 ammo, it deals the most damage compared to the other types.
Laggalot101 Yeah, uh, I forgot that the Hunter's Notes actually contain advice for the different shot types XD
Gladly, it seems that my Normal advice is still correct, just Full Burst for the most damage.
Wide benefits more from Charged shots more than anything else, and I still think that the standard shots are also pretty good. However, Long Shots are also strong in the subject of Wide, but not AS strong. In exchange, Wyvern's Fire is the best of all the other shot types.
Yay! Cant wait for the ranged weapons! *O*
I'll let it slide this time :P**
for blast dash you didnt tell them about pressing A after the slam to do a shotgun exsplosion . which is the best part in my opnion
it can easily also go into a full burst... for striker this gives it one way of dumping full bursts
+dragonfable66 ??? what ? Your saying the same thing I just said .
Personally i'd think this weapon would be a little op with the stats it had in 4U. I mean, i just killed a Gammoth in 4 minutes with low rank stuff, but if you shave 35% off of that time, it gets lowered down to slightly above 2 minutes.
seems like striker would be a good place for a lancer to start when learning gunlance
+Duelboy123 IDK, Bushido seems pretty damn good
+Theros Rex no, I mean for a lancer trying to become a gunlancer, because of the triple poke rather than the shotgun slam
Duelboy123 Ah
Duelboy123 As a GS user I suppose that I don;t have the same viewpoint as you
+Theros Rex yeah, its muscle habit to a lance user to press x thrice, dodge, repeat, so having a triple poke just helps with the transition for a lance user because of the already similar attacks becoming more so, without removing the gun part of gunlance
Erm, quick question. Either you forgot to mention that you can do a forward lunge off a ledge to go for a slam straight away, or it doesn't exist this game. Which one is it?
man the weapon designs were so much more epic pre mhw..
i want the bowgun tutorials first, not the normal bow, ive been waiting so long to know everything about the bowguns in MHX/MHGen
What item set did you use for the thumbnail photo? Pirate set looks awesome
I felt the same except with the hunt times. It was fun to use but it always felt like I was missing something or not using it properly.
Will you cover Nyanta? It's basically a new weapon.
Osutogaloa Second Form Weapons when??
Hey Arekkz do you know (by any chance) when the MH Generations demo will be available?
+Andy Zheng Actually it may not, in Japan the demo release happened exactly 9 days before the release of MHX
+Theros Rex ok thx both of you
Andy Zheng Ok, I understand, but you know I'd actually like for the demo to come out a few weeks before the main game just to try out everything. I dunno if I can master my possible main in 9 days
Andy Zheng I can't decide between maining Bushido SA or Lance
Andy Zheng Yep
my bread and butter technique is forward x, x, x, a, a, a, x, x I just spam for good damage :)
That doesn't seem too cost effective... Shelling tends to cause FAR less damage in terms of full bursting... Even the 3 charged shots don't matter all that much.
Hell it's about time.
Bow or heavy bowgun next? Also do we have to unlock the styles and hunting arts?
You can choose your hunting style at any time other than during a quest. You can get some hunter arts at start but there are others that you must unlock.
Can you still push R+X mid-air to slam instead of air-poke, like in MH4U, or are mid-air slams exclusive to Aerial?
Also: does shell type (normal long or wide) affect any of the gunlance hunting arts? (obviously not the gauge buff)
The heat gauge isn't nearly as cool as you might think. If you compare the gunlance's motion values to those of 4U's:
Yellow: -10%
Orange: ~the same as 4U's
Red: +5%
And that's not all.

Yo Alex. I've been meaning to ask. Any good high rank armor sets that go well with Gunlance?
Oh yeah. To anyone reading this, know I'm looking for Guard Boost (or anything that lets me block unblockable attacks), artillery, maybe even sharpness, and something for keeping my guard up.
did they remove run in scoop? In 4U you can do a run in scoop off a cliff and instant downslam...
More aggressive monsters like zinogre are really fun to turtle-tank against with guard boosts.
how hard was it to get out from the division and record other videos? :D

Saderich The Rich Ah.
Do you need to have the lance heated in order to be useful (Like the longsword's spirit slash)? Or do you still do normal amounts of damage without it?
i love gunlances especially since they stopped being garbage since MH3U...but i am struggling to get the hang of the heat meter, seems whenever i get it in the red zone, i either overshoot it and overheat, or i wyvern fire with not enough built up to stay in the red zone...guess i should take some time to actually really practice lol
using a lvl 1 Red Devil Gunlance (Tetsucabra) and while it has some small drawbacks its the hardest hitting weapon ive even got so far in terms of Raw damage at 120...everything else i got is ranging from 70 to 100 Raw...so sure the -20% affinity is a small drawback, but the weapon is performing exceptionally well, its also got lvl 2 Shelling which is better than any other Gunlance i have atm
but the heat meter mechanic is proving difficult to consistently do good with lol
Dramatic_Gaming
for Normal-type shelling that sounds about right in terms of how much it takes, im getting way better at it but still not quite perfect
cus each time you attack with t he gunlance sans shelling, it decreases the meter a bitt, so if you fail a full burst after a slam for whatever reason (usually the monster but ive had my friend interupt it plenty cus shes really gung-ho with blademaster weapons)
burt yeah, 3 full bursts with Normal-type seems to put you near the brder then 2-3 non-charged shells tends to max you out
i still sometimes misjudge it and get an overheat but thats becoming far less common lol
course the Dragon Flame hunting art is also good for this cus it can be used even during Overheat and will STILL maximize and re-lock the meter
If you're still having trouble maintaining the Heat Gauge, try to get Artillery Novice/Expert on your set. It does so much for the Gunlance, it's not even funny:
- Increased shelling damage.
Laggalot101
thanks for that tip, didnt know that skill did anything with the Heat Gauge, im not having much trouble anymore maintaining it after tons of practice, but ill try and get that skill via armor/gems anyway cus thats still really useful
need to know is there some special input with the buttons to be able to pull of ur hunter arts, or u just press the the bottom screen alone??
+Lacruz Dillon Bottom screen unless you have the New 3DS
Gunlancers make some noise!
Heat Gauge is a sin, nerfed the weapon which is niche already and subpar since the gun part doesn't escale later in the game, literally doesn't make sense.
You can't do a jump attack by pressing forward and x towards the ledge anymore?
Hum... yes, you still can do it?
something else worth mentioning is wyvren fire can be used after lance slam though not sure how one could benefit from that ability
...correct me if im wrong.. so basically if I lock the gauge... its prohibited to use shelling?... and its same as ¨slam and boom combo¿?..
Not sure why that has anything to do with the "slam and boom" combo.
ok got it, thanks sir for the info,, ^_^ ...
Can you do a full burst after the Charge hunting art? (Second art shown)
+Greg Bugden you should be able to, i recall one of the trailers demonstrating blast dash on tigrex, and he does a burst after the slam. its also important to note that you take no damage while rushing the target. in said trailer the person dashed through rocks tiggy sent at him
What's a good gunlance and armor set for the gunlance
+Arekkz do you know a good place where i can get the translations of the japanese game ,like a website with all the things the NPC's sais
Get gud nub
After Blast Dash, can't you follow-up with full burst?
Yes which is very helpful with striker
Love the background music! Anyone know what it is?
Ziang Shi darude sandstorm

Arekkz is there weapon honing in MHX?
+Juan Perez No, since there are no Apex Monsters
if I get monster Hunter cross in the Japanese version can I change the language to english?
Gunlance does cut tails?!
Gunlance is my favorite weapon but the ruined it I can chain reloads or wyvern Fire without getting penalized I don't think I'll be using it in MHG! It's RUINED!
But they not the. sorry
And I can't not I can
That sounds like a plus, not a bad thing.
Perhaps you didn't understand Arekkz in the video, but once you Wyvern Fire, the heat gauge freezes until you can Wyvern Fire again. This means stabbing and shelling freely without anything holding you back.

Can you equip a Gunlance without a shield?
+ChannelUnknown nope, it comes as part of the weapon
Wouldn't your right hand just be there, awkwardly doing nothing.
It would open up the possibility for new concepts such as a Gun Greatsword...which actually sounds pretty fucking nice.
+Jonathan Joestar I'd say a gun mallet would be the next best choice. they already have some hammers that look like they are cannons or revolvers
Ever seen the Seltas Hammer? Now that's a beautiful piece of work.
I could have sworn you did the gunlance already...
Nope. GS, LS, SnS, DBs, Hammer, HH, Lance, SA, CB, and IG were all done. And now we got GL today. Meaning we only have LBG, HBG, and Bow left.
Thanks a lot
