I broke my poor begonia by accident yesterday and couldn't find a good tutorial on how to save the broken bits until I found your video! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
This is by FAR the best video I've found on rhizomatous begonia propagation. You detailed steps are so very helpful! Thank you very much. Great job and I will be looking for more, more, more on your channel! God bless!
BRILLIANT video on how to propagate Begonia from their Rhizomes, the beautiful Begonia sizemorea you gave me a few years is flowering at the moment too, and I LOVE its huge hairy leaves :-D you have an amazing Begonia collection, thanks so much for sharing how to propagate these Begonia beauties from their Rhizomes Rachel, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Wexford for a fantastic Friday and weekend ahead XXXXX
This was so helpful! I wasn’t sure what a rhizome was or even that what I had was a begonia! I researched after my plant took a downturn suddenly- I think due to cold Chicago winter near the window. I was so sad, did my research- wondered if I could propagate fro leaves- which I could. I was stuck on the thick root- the rhizome and wondered about that and found your video!! Thank you so much! I hope to propagate my beautiful Ruby slipper begonia successfully with this method! ♥️
Great method Rachel! Hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year break! I should try this method with my begonias too. Thanks for sharing and happy growing.
Could you give me any advice on rooting a 2" rhizome of begonia Immense ...in water? It has 2 older leaves and one new once coming up. Could I just place the piece of rhizome with the leaves in a cup of water?
Thank you for this , Rachael. I have to do this to my Sizemoreae. Yes, all of the new leaves turned brown. I think it may be a tobacco leaf disease because my son had smoked in the house. Planting into new, sterilized pots with sterilized soil, and rinsing with peroxide.
No, there is no update video. I showed a cutting I had done earlier in this video instead of making a follow up video. The outcome was good. Make sure you include a node in your cutting!
Me begonia sizemoreae is just a baby & only had 1 leaf attached when I got it in the mail with another leaf detached. I’m propagating that leaf but worried about the rhizome, the attached leaf is limp & sad but not due to under watering. I’ve had it over a month & it hasn’t grown anything new. I have moved it from sphagnum to a cactus soil mixed with pearlite. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? Should I remove the leaf?
Hi Rachel, I only have one Begonia, Martha Stewart, sold by Logees, and created by Logees especially for Martha Stewart! Come Spring time I may try propagating her following your video! Looks easy!! 😍 Yours are so pretty!
Hi, Rachel! Thanks for the very informative video! I’m very new to rhizome begonia and feel like they are quite fuzzy compare with the cane begonias. Mine are keep on dying back and regrowing, and never actually thriving. The leaves are dropping crazily when they throw a tantrum. I’m in zone 9 with average humidity 70% throw the year in subtropical area. I’ll say the climate is perfect for them but I don’t know why they are suffering. The medium is coco coir with lots of perlite. So the drainage is wonderful. And I don’t tend to over water them. Could you please suggest how I should deal with them? Thanks!
Hi Rachel Great advice as usual , I have 3 Begonia " glowing embers " beautiful plant.I thought someone said they can't be divided, but would love some free plants if possible .🤞
Ive got a very old rex Begonia as a gift. Its in very good condition, quite extensive rhizome and lots of leaves. Id like to repot it, because the Soil is just plain potting compost and its in a huge pot ..7 liter . Thats against everything i know and i had success with, with Begonias. The rhizome doenst have contact with soil in most places, although its still contained in the pot. When I repot it, should i cover the rhizome with soil?
Hello from Ireland to Kerala and thank you for watching. Begonias are not fussy about there potting mix. You could try 80% good potting mix and 20% perlite. Hope this helps
Hi from Australia, Rachel. Thanks for this helpful video. I have a very thick rhizome it’s growing above the soil. Suddenly nothing is happening... it’s green, some parts have rotted away so I’ve cut it out. How do I rescue it and get it to put out leaves. Thanks hope you can help me. .
@@GardeningatDouentza oh wow thank you so much for the quick reply. I really appreciate it. The thick rhizome is green and grown all around and above the soil. No roots.
Greetings from Malaysia. When repotting the small rhizome, can I bury the rhizome completely with soil or leave the upper part of it exposed? Thank you.
Hi there. Happily I never seem to get powdery mildew on my begonia (touch wood) although I used to get it on streptocarpus. I think it's one of those things that, once you have it, it's very hard to shake!

Your begonias are gorgeous.

It's just such an easy method, isn't it. Happy New Year 😊

Hi Stu. Great to hear from you and I'm really happy you liked the video. I wish you a great 2021 too - lord knows, we deserve it!
Great propagation video. Looks like you are going to have lots of Begonia toddlers in a few weeks!
Yes, it's lots of new begonias for me, Una. Could be worse 😂
This has been SUPER helpful!
I'm so glad!
Great advice as always!

Can you propogate this type of begonia from a stem cutting as well?
Yes, all the begonias in the video can be propagated from stem cuttings.
Is there an update video on these?

It should work well, Wanda. You shouldn't have to wait until spring but perhaps that fits better with your plans. Happy growing!
@@GardeningatDouentza thank you Rachel, maybe I won’t wait! I was thinking about orchids and the repots.
Ah yes, spring can be very busy with all the orchid repotting. It's not a good idea to add extra jobs in.
How do multiply when you only have one Rhys on.
I guess you wait until your plant get's bigger. It could be, however, that your begonia is the type that can be propagated from leaf cuttings.

Hmmm, someone gave me a division of their Glowing Embers a few years back so it seems it can be done.

I would bury the rhizomes a little when repotting or pin the overhanging rhizomes to the surface of the compost until they root.
@@GardeningatDouentza thank you soooo much ! 🌸🌸🌸 i couldnt find that Information anywhere
Aahh! Just in time! My Begonia heracleifoia is getting huge and the rhizomes are creeping out of the pots. This should help. Thanks! 🔥💚
Well, it would be a shame to waste those spare rhizomes 😉

@@GardeningatDouentza 😍
I'm just wondering if you can use really small piece rhizomes?
Some varieties of begonia work better than others but you are more likely of success by choosing a portion of rhyzome with an eye.
Is propagation done in spring or anytime of the year?
You can carry out this propagation any time of year

I wish I knew how to send you a photo
In this situation I would dig up the begonia to check its roots, maybe grow it in a pot for a while to see what's going on.

The thick rhizome is green and grown all around and above the soil. No roots.
@@jeanneduncan3522 What an animal! I would try removing a large section of rhizome and coaxing it to grow roots on some moist compost.

Hello from Ireland and thanks for your comment. You can bury the rhizome and it should be fine.
Thank you 😁
Do you struggle with powdery mildew on your begonias where you are in Ireland?
