  • This is an easy Christmas appetizer, ideal make-ahead food for the holidays. I published a sausage ball recipe a couple of years ago and it is one I've been using for probably close to 10 years, but I recently found a stack of recipe cards that were given to me by family members DECADES ago. I was in my early 20s and I'm in my late 40s now, so we're talking almost 30 years ago. This particular recipe came from my Aunt Belle and I was a little skeptical since it uses less cheese and more Bisquick, but her sausage balls always were delicious so I didn't hesitate to give it a try.
THESE ARE IT, Y'ALL! These are so good! Way better than that other sausage ball recipe, and that other one was also delicious! These add paprika (and I added in some cayenne, even though it wasn't in the recipe.)
If you want, you can add more cheese, more sausage, or less bisquick, but I think adding in the teaspoon of paprika and not using that full pound of cheese really makes for a better sausage ball.
    INGREDIENTS
1 lb sausage, mild or hot
10 oz grated cheese (in this video, I'm using an 8 oz block that I grated, so not quite 10 oz.)
3 cups Bisquick (I'm using Great Value brand since Walmart was out of Bisquick)
    1 tsp. paprika
I also added a few shakes of cayenne.
If you need to add in some water to bring everything together, you can do that, but probably no more than about 1/4 cup.
Once it's all mixed together, form into little balls and bake in 350º oven for about 10-12 minutes. Enjoy!

Oh, I love sausage balls too! I usually end up making two or three batches of these over the holiday season because we all love them, and we just go through them so fast! 😅 The tea kettle was a Mother’s Day gift from my son. I love it too! 💕

I hope you will love this recipe! I didn’t think I was going to change the one I’ve been using for the last I don’t know how many years, but boy, since I have dug this one out of my old recipe box, you can bet this is the one I’m sticking with going forward! 😅

Try the red lobster cheddar bay biscuit mix. Its awesome that's the only way I will make them now.

Oh, I forgot about that biscuit mix! I haven’t eaten in a Red Lobster in probably 20 years, but I used to buy that mix and make those cheddar bay biscuits on occasion. I never have thought to use that for sausage balls, but I may try that! Great suggestion!

I love sausage gravy and I've made it many times, but I've never thought about dipping these in that kind of a gravy. Such a great idea, though! Thank you!

I love colby cheddar and cream cheese in mine

Oh, that sounds like a nice combination! How do you add in the cream cheese? Do you just soften it to room temperature? Do you add equal amounts of shredded Colby and then cream cheese? I’m curious about this! 😃

Yes I also add sharp cheddar. They are so yummy and soft to the taste and touch. I have added a tablespoon or two of buttermilk. I blend in my kitchenaid. My hands have a hard time with the mixing.

This is a new recipe to me as we have nothing like it in Australia. Is this served usually at Christmas, or anytime throughout the year?
When I make rissoles (meatballs) I always wear gloves, because my hands get very messy. It is so much nicer taking off the gloves and still having clean hands. Thanks Sara, for sharing your family recipe. 😊🌻💖

For us, this is usually a Christmastime thing, but really, these are great for any sort of get together like a baby or bridal shower, or a family reunion or church fellowship meal or any party. 😊

I do like to use a sauce with mine. But I find that it is messy to dip a small ball into a sauce without getting it all over me. So my solution to the problem is to shape my sausage balls into a tiny log shape that is easier to dip.
