No trip to NYC is complete for me without a visit to City Island. As a Bronx expat, I visit relatives in NYC one or two times a year. Lunch at either Sea Shore or Crab Shanty followed by browsing the various shops is our regular routine, a Great Time!!!

I’m 62. Grew up in Canarsie, Brooklyn...lived in Forest Hills, Queens as an adult...and moved to Florida in 1994, when I was 37.
Went to City Island for the FIRST time a week before I moved south, and I was kicking myself in the ass for not knowing about it sooner. I just heard “Bronx” my entire life and thought “Uh oh.”
Best meal I ever had...BEST MEAL I EVER HAD!...and I freaking loved the vibe.
I can’t overemphasize how much I’ve been kicking myself in the ass since 1994 for not making this place a big part of my NYC life.

Great as usual. I’ve been going to City island for 30 years regularly. Some of my favorite restaurants; Lobster house, ($$$) sit outside on the water in the summer. Crab Shanty ($$) look for there sometimes lobster dinner special. Black Whale, super Sunday brunch buffet. And the Fried lobster at the Pier is to die for. Traffic getting into the island on summer weekends is tough. But I like to go the rest of the year as well. My wife tought in the school there briefly.
You should check out another very different neighborhood. Sea gate at the end of Coney Island in Brooklyn. It’s a private community at the end of the peninsula. It even has a light house. Maybe you can get in as “press”.

Very nice vid. Very nostalgic for me. I grew up in the Bronx. Used to go to City Island all the time. Rented row boats at Jack's Bait & Tackle (we're talkin the 60's) Went out on the fishing party boats. There used to be a public fishing pier at the end of City Island Ave. The only thing that remains of it are some pilings. You used to be able to fish off of the Fordam Street pier but entrance all locked up now. And oh yeah, the seafood. Lobster Box, Sammy's. Wonderful place back then. Went there a couple years ago and zero parking unfortunately. Side streets as well.

I have great memories of City Island from when I was a kid back In the 1980’s. My Aunts’ Vinny and Colette had a nice house on Hawkins St. that I used to visit from nearby Mount Vernon. Another relative had a boat on the Island that we used to go fishing on. We had great times at the nearby Turtle Cove driving range and miniature golf place. I still visit the Island every now and then to get ice cream at Lickety Split and breakfast at the City Island Diner. You definitely don’t feel like you are in the Bronx when there. More of a New England feel. Thanks for the video 👍

I grew up in mt Vernon, and my parents used to take us to city island when we were kids in the 1960s and 1970s. Having so many neighborhoods in such a compressed space, as New York City has, really allows you identify with many things you read about or see in films or in the culture in general. I got my first traffic citation in nearby Orchard beach by driving in the parking lot when i was 13 years old. My mother was with me, letting me drive because I told her my father always let me drive when we were there in the winter, and the lots empty. My mother was embarrassed…the cop was Bronx gruff…and i got fined $50 for driving without a license, for which in those days You had to go to court in person. I thought it was cool. Then i became a defense attorney. lol.
