    For day 33 I played a traditional Taiwanese tune on dizi, which is a Chinese style flute. My 60 Day Challenge is to film myself making music for 60 consecutive days.
    For this video, I decided I would demonstrate how the Chinese flute called a dizi creates it's characteristic sound. I'm still not great at attaching the dimo, as it's called. It's actually a thin shaving of bamboo that vibrates when the flute is played. From my observations of other UA-cam videos, it seems as though the "buzzy" timbre should be a little more prevalent and consistent.
    The flute actually sounds quite nice if you just cover the extra hole, called the "mo kong," with tape. I've found that electrical tape works quite nicely!
    EQUIPMENT USED:
    Dizi
    Neumann TLM 102 Microphone
    Sonar X2 Producer
    Adobe Premiere Elements
    iPhone 5s (with a Glif tripod mount)
    Neewer CN-160 LED Video Light
    RELATED LINK:
    Through further research, I'm realizing that I'm supposed to leave more wrinkles in the dimo, whereas I tend to make it too flat and taut. I think it's probably a hard balance to strike because it can't be too loose either. Here's a link to a great tutorial made by the company I purchased the flute from - www.carrotmusic...

      It might be, but your blowing technique matters as well. And also for the dizi, you have a membrane which produces the sound, you may want to check it as well.

      @@leif1075You can take the membrane of and see if it's broken, or maybe you can paste it on again to make sure it is not too tight, or too loose. As for your blowing problem, you might be blowing it wrongly, which results in sounds produced sometimes and no sounds otherwise. You should be blowing it downwards instead of horizontally, with your upper lips over your lower lip. Also be sure not to blow too hard.

    Wow, you can hold a lot of air in your lungs to play the flute. You already know how to play the Western flute and are simply transferring the skills to tackle the dizi, right? That's a good tune! (PS: You have beautiful eyes! ^^)

      Yes, it takes practice, but when you learn to control the air flow, you can play longer notes. It's harder to play long notes on flutes than most other instruments!

      Relax and enjoy the video that's sharing cultures. You need to realize that Taiwanese are Chinese with different government fraction. They created this whole I'm Taiwanese and not Chinese because they lost the civil war after ww2. They abandoned their people to fend for themselves against Japanese in ww2 so that's how communist gained power. I'm not taking sides because both hierarchies were dirty the communist party murdered more of their people than the Japanese ever did while the nationalist were all about the upper class ripping the poor. Taiwanese probably kept more refined art considering they were made of the social elitists.

    The Dizi ( Chinese flute) can be traced back over 7,000 years back to the Jiahu neolithic site in central Henan province of China. Digs have found flutes dating back to 7,000 BC - 5,000 BC that could represent the earliest playable instruments found. There is a documented history of the music played on the Dizi which is still being passed down

      @WilliamArnold  7 років тому +2

      Michelle Therese Cool, then you should go for it. You just might need to get used to covering all the holes. A closed hole, western flute does a lot of the work for you because the keys will pretty much cover the hole as long as you're pressing it down.

    • @InTheWind_
      @InTheWind_ 7 років тому

      Good point! I have my Native American flute with open holes, the struggle that I have is they are spaced for big man hands haha! I did find a beginner dizi that is 18cm shorter then the full professional size. Hmmmm! That might be a good start... Do you know if there are any reputable dizi instructors on UA-cam? Just to narrow down the search a bit. I really love that song you played, Taiwan? Just got a post card from a "Postcrossing" member in Taiwan. :-) So I'm loving everything I come across from this wee isle. When did you take up the dizi? And in your opinion do you think a dedicated person with a modest history of playing instruments ( I was never a big pro) could self-teach? I live on our organic farm on a little remote island in Scotland, that's why I ask haha!

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  7 років тому +1

      Michelle Therese I don't really know of any teachers on UA-cam. Not sure when I started. A few years ago? I was already playing other bamboo flutes. It's not really any different. It's just a matter of getting to know each instrument...the spacing of the holes, etc. I think that as long as you have fun with it, it's worth the effort to try. Just don't be too hard on yourself. 🙂

    Nice Chinese tune on your Di Zi! Regarding the membrane, what it is is the inner membrane lining the inside of the hollow part of the bamboo. The species of bamboo that is most used for its inner membrane is Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra), although I suppose that the membranes of other species of the Phyllostachys genus could also be used. But Black Bamboo has the most copious membrane material. The traditional adhesive that is used to afix the membrane onto the flute is Garlic juice - it is sticky. Just cut a Garlic clove in half and rub the juice onto the periphery of the hole and attach the membrane. The species of bamboo that is usually used to make the Di Zi is Tonkin Bamboo (Arundinaria amabilis McClure), although many fine Di Zi's have been made from Black Bamboo as well. It seems like your Di Zi is made from Tonkin Bamboo. The Chinese characters for "Di Zi" literally mean "Flute Child".

    • @PTHSMusic
      @PTHSMusic 5 років тому +1

      They are sold in various keys. This one is the first one I bought and I think it's a pretty good size to learn on. As they get bigger, it becomes a bit harder to spread your fingers and close the holes accurately. According to the Asian naming system, this would be a flute in C because that's the note it plays when the top three holes are covered. I would call it a G flute because that's the lowest note and the major scale it most easily plays.

      I've had the same problem in the past, especially with heavier instruments. If your dizi is a long one, it makes it harder to balance it without putting too much pressure on your thumb.
      My only advice is to relax your left hand as much as possible and take it slow. It's always a good idea to check yourself for unwanted tension when playing instruments.

    My frend please, can you explain the notes in te dizi? I want to buy some one. But i dont know the notes position. Sorry but my english. :)

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  4 роки тому

      They play a major scale when you uncover one hole at a time. Start by covering all of the holes and uncover one hole at a time. This dizi plays a G scale, so the notes would be G A B C D E F#

  • @ahh613
    @ahh613 5 років тому

    I know how to play the regular Western flute. How different are the fingerings on the dizi?

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  5 років тому

      The main difference is what would be an F on a Western flute will be the equivalent of an F# on a simple system flute like a dizi, bansuri, or Irish whistle. Most six hole flutes like that will play a major scale just by uncovering one hole at a time (starting with all holes covered).

    • @ahh613
      @ahh613 5 років тому

      Does it have all the sharps and flats? It looks like there are only six holes.

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  5 років тому

      ahh613 No, six hole flutes are not chromatic. You can only easily play 8 different notes. You can play a major scale starting on the first note or the fourth note.

    Loved the song!! The dizi sounds wonderful with your playing. I’ve been playing the western flute for 6 years and recently bought my first di zi, because I missed playing the flute. Now I’m wondering if it made a mistake 😂 because I may not be able to apply the skills I’ve learnt with the western flute, to the dizi. May I know if there is any major difference in the playing? (Embochure, blowing) and is it difficult to master?

    Hi William. Great video which will help. I started with a cheap dizi recently and looking to continue to a student level. The purple or bitter bamboo seems like the right thing. I play bass guitar by hearing and don't use chords but with the dizi it seems important to know what key to choose when buying. The range which you use in this particular video sounds versatile enough. May i ask, in what key is the dizi you are playing?

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! Sorry, just seeing this now. I would say this dizi is in the key of G because it most easily plays a G scale and the lowest note is a G (G4). According to the traditional Chinese way of naming flutes, however, it would be called a C Dizi as they are named after the note that is played when the top three holes are covered. Hope that helps!

    Fascinating "science" lesson - beautiful music. But glue??? And then water to take it off??? Doesn't that hurt the finish on the flute?

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  9 років тому

      The traditional method uses something called erjiao, which is basically a water soluble glue, if I'm not mistaken. I definitely need a lesson on applying the dimo, though. I'd like to be a little more confident that I'm getting the right timbre. I gather that it's supposed to be a little more wrinkled, whereas I'm putting it on totally flat and taut. I think I'm going to include a link to a tutorial in my description so people can see how to do it right! :)

    Do the six holes play a major scale.
    If i purchased a Dizi in the key of F, would it play F, G, A, B♭, C, D, and E.

    • @WilliamArnold
      @WilliamArnold  7 років тому +3

      Yes, they play a major scale. You have to be careful about the naming system, though. In India and China, flutes are named after the note that's played with three holes covered. So, the flute in this video is considered a C flute, but it actually plays in the key of G, which is the lowest note. So it would play G A B C D E F#.
