    It would be really great if the experimental variation was standardized. The experimental setup (hardware requirements) should be compared systemically in a 3x3 matrix (e.g. laptop - M1 Pro - 1080p) with the same device types (macbook, mini, imac). then a graph should be created with (x) watts and (y) FPS.

    I think what would benefit greatly right now is for Apple to improve Metal FX. I think this year Metal FX 2.0 ought to be a priority because that could do wonders for both current and future hardware.
    It might not feel like it's there yet, but it will get to a point where playing these games on Apple Hardware will feel rather nice. I'm definitelty looking to upgrade to an M2 iPad Air when it does happen.

    I played the game on the base 14" Macbook Pro (M1Pro) with 2K resolution and MetalFX Quality, most of the time the fps is about 50-75fps and the graphics look great.
    The optimization is so good and Capcom does a good job.

  • @Wayne-sn6qy
    @Wayne-sn6qy 5 місяців тому +5

    It's quite wierd because in 4K, my M1 Max 16" can reach 45 to 50 fps on Max settings with MetalFX Quality, just as your M3 Max. So I guess your Macbook was throttling.
    I have to turn on high power mode even with the 16-inch to prevant throttling.
    It can reach 87W~95W(power from wall) but with auto mode, it ends up staying under 70W.

    • @frankgu
      @frankgu 5 місяців тому

      It looks that he tested this with battery and didn’t turn on the high performance mode. It was also tested with recording. In a more general test, 14 inch 30core m3 max with max graphics 1440p and high performance mode can reach 60fps under the same scene. I think this video is some kind of misleading.

    • @haysoos123
      @haysoos123 5 місяців тому

      I agree, high power mode is great for gaming if you have a max chip. I have it on the 'high power when plugged in' setting. It kicks in the fans earlier to maintain temps, and on a mbp, the fans don't sound very loud unless at full blast.

    Interesting spread of machines. I think a lot of folks would be interested in the M1 Pro / Max performance as well, as these machines sold very well. I have an M1 Max 16"/32GB MBP and play at Max Settings, 1200p and 60fps. I have MetalFX in Quality mode for dynamic scaling in any tricky parts and have never seen any frame drops or drop in quality. In fact all the games I play regularly I set this target: 1200p, 60fps, Max Settings. Lies of P, Grid Legends, RE4 and RE Village all work great on this 2 year old machine. I could probably raise the resolution or drop MetalFX altogether with little impact, but the machine gets warmer for sure. Don't be so hard on the base M1/M2 machines. If you think about the kind of settings a 2 year old Window PC with Intel Graphics could play on, it would be much worse, especially on battery power. I think they do quite well, although 8GB base models were, and still are, a mistake IMO.

    On my 16" with binned M3 Max, outputting to 4k OLED TV with VRR + HDR, I can get stable 60fps at most areas with MetalFX Quality on, all settings maxed at 2160p V-sync on. I don't keep the Metal HUD on at all times since it is distracting to my gameplay so I don't know how much is dropped during the water room you showed in your video, but visually I did not see a drop enough to be noticed or impact my aiming and movement. So you may be right that the thermal difference between the 14" and 16" may be a large factor as my binned M3 Max is supposed to perform worse than your full M3 Max, especially with their 30 vs 40 GPU cores.
    With how this game (the RE engine) renders, I have to see the best graphics settings approach is to use as high res as possible so the hair anti-aliasing is not visibly jarring, then tweak the MetalFX and V-sync etc to force more fps until you find the quality unacceptable.

    These games seem like a combination of 2 things:
    -The newer chipset's overall performance
    -Capcom's engine being very optimized (heck the remakes, RE7 and 8 were already pretty impressive on dated hardware like the PS4)
    I am definitely getting the REmake4 on my Mac this time

    Interesting choice to wear the iPod nano as a watch! Anyway, I have been playing it on M1 base MBP, and I will see if Vysnc off helps, otherwise what I noticed at least is before the castle, it runs fine in the recommended, 60FPS, MetalFX Quality, with some noticeable frame drops towards the end but as soon as you get in the damn castle it goes to shit.
    In fact, I could restart my computer, have nothing else running, and the game will crash quite a bit until I set it to Performance. This is kind of disappointing and I don't think it is actually because of the castle itself but it feels alsmost as if though they stopped trying to optimize the game for Mac after the village area. I don't know if this is because this is a multiple platform title compared to REVIII for Mac, but it is a little disappointing.
    This is also actually the first time I have ever played all the way through RE4 ever funny enough, even though I've played through all other RE titles multiple times from PS1 up to today's hardware, and I guess the only main line title I haven't played through is RE6 now. Still it's a pretty fun game and it kicks ass going through it a second, third time just so you can wreck everybody!

    i really love playing RE4 on iPhone 15 promax + Backbone Gen2 controller. However the game is very challenging - so you have to turn on aim-assist option, still the game is very satisfying.
    i also have 16” macbook m2 pro - RE4 runs very smooth 60 fps, but i really prefer playing on iphone even with 30 fps cap.
    Maybe it’s all because of a dream, i think every little boy dreamed about AAA-titles not only in portable way, but on mobile phones in the pocket )))
    What a shame we have a picture of a pure soap on M2 ipad pro locked on 30 fps - Capcom could do better and I hope they will.
    Still i’m very grateful to see AAA-titles on mac/iphone/ipad, looking forward to new Capcom releases and also others like Death Stranding 👍

    Suggestion: please make sure these results are tested with NO THROTTLING when you compare the chips otherwise the video will be misleading. For example, M1 in 13 MacBook Pro should have no throttling issue but M2 in MacBook Air should have the issue, as well as M3/ M3 Max. So the results will look weird as some comments mentioned.

Where you have steam os and have proton. Something like that to be implemented in steam. So you have to do everything from there and don’t need to depend on other softwares you need to buy.

    Performance is kinda disappointing. Village on my 14" M2 Max MBP, with everything cranked up to 11, at 4k (MetalFX Quality) stays between 60 and 70 FPS. The fans go nuts, though. 🤣
    Looking Forward to the Grid Legends review, I was thinking of giving that a go actually, as I enjoyed it on PS.

    Ik its overly negative, but I just can't see the appeal of this even if I owned a mac (few family members do, so I could buy it to play on that but eh,) if you can afford a mac I'd say you can afford better options, It's nice to have options but this performance on a laptop of that price is horrible. I remember I think it was the M1 or M2 chip? anyway they stated it was just as fast as a 3080/3090 if not faster? Maybe in edting/cpu heavy workloads for video rendering? The one thing I know it's good at is power efficiency so there's that

I'll never forget my experience with that OS that works horrible...
