I ran my first (and only) marathon at 55. I started learning Spanish at 60, and now, at 62, I finally started to paint with watercolors. After a successful career as a perfectionistic graphic/web designer, I am LOVING the fact that painting with watercolor means I have no "command-z," for unlimited undo... which I think simply feeds the need for perfection. The freedom to "let go" feels so good! My later years are shaping up to be my best in terms of learning and doing for the sake of enjoyment. Thank you for your wonderful videos!
WOW! Emily, this was so inspiring! I’m 78 and lost my dear husband of 50 years this past April at age 95. I’ve dabbled in art all my life and found watercolor to be my favorite medium, but never taken it seriously. We did not have children and we were both “onlys” but I own a home and have quality paper and paints. Now you’ve given me hope that I can improve, even at my age. BTW, I’ve always been in awe of “identical” twins (there were actually two sets in my high school) and enjoyed your video about you and your “mirror” sister. Have a wonderful holiday and new year ~ and thanks to you, I will too.💁🏼♀️💕
Sharon, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. I know this must be a lonely time for you. I am glad that you've found some joy in watercolor painting. And as Emily says, it's the passion for doing something that makes us great or happy or whole. Many good wishes for success in your endeavors.
You are absolutely right! I am 68 and started watercolour over a year ago. I would love to attend watercolour classes but none are available where I am. I have my 9 grandkids now enjoying painting. Every visit we gather around the kitchen table, get our paint supplies ready and away we go! Each paints something different, what THEY want to paint, and I think that is the secret to success. Grandson (6), really enjoyed seeing what colours he could mix from just using red, blue and yellow. He loved that part the most!
This brought tears to my eyes. My Mom started painting in her 60’s, she passed away a year ago. Her paintings hangs on my fireplace and on my walls. They also hang on the walls of my siblings and on the walls of my children. Those paintings are treasures. She passed a natural artistic love onto me. I started painting 2 years ago, painted 3 paintings and stopped. I am now 64 and have decided to start painting while recovering from a kidney transplant. Thank you for this video, it touched my heart and really spoke to me. Your grandfather’s art was gorgeous and he obviously passed his talent onto you.
Thank you for this video. First, good for Grandpa; what a powerful testimony of what Christ can do in someone’s life! I’m 66 and retired when I was 60. But I spent those 6 years remodeling the house we just sold and now I’m building our last house. I expect to finish before spring and then on to several hobbies I haven’t had much time for, one of which is watercolor painting. I started back in the late 80’s and frankly, I suck 😂 but I’m not intimidated. I’ve learned tons from UA-camrs like yourself and I know I can do it well with practice. I know people can excel at things they don’t like to do (I’m talking working for a living, and yes painting too I suppose) but I think if someone wants to make money at a hobby it would be a TREMENDOUS help if they loved it first. And be careful that the money making aspect doesn’t take the fun out of it. Thank you for your great videos. I love them!
Oh Emily! This was Perfect timing for me to hear! I’m 55, recently divorced after 36 years and awaiting a kidney transplant. I stared watercolor painting less than a year ago and I love it! Recently I’ve had people ask me to make greeting cards and I said yes, but I have so much more to learn and I’m on a very fixed income. I feel very blessed that Ive come across your UA-cam channel. Thank you and blessings to you!
What a lovely and inspiring story about your grandfather, reminds me of my own grandfather's similar story , and I hope he can somehow look down on the influence he has had on his descendants. And maybe you can look back years from now and imagine how helpful this video has been for people like me, a semi-new early retiree who thought I could find time for my passions (watercolor and piano) but have been so frustrated by kids who won't move out, a husband who behaves like a kid, a house that won't stay clean, dogs who no one will walk, and the list goes on and on and on... lol. But now, newly inspired and empowered by YOU, I feel like getting out the hickory stick and handing out some ultimatums: Mom is gonna watercolor and play piano and you boys can have Scottish Takeout (McDonald's) all month in a dirty house and wake me up on Christmas morning!
"but have been so frustrated by kids who won't move out, " How about checking out some rental prices, and hand them rent books which includes their share of the utilities (to be paid from their bank account by direct debit) and a rota for the household chores (you and your husband should be added to said list, btw!)? It could be the hardest thing you've ever done, but would be the best for you and your family. They'll never grow up while we go on doing everything for them, and it's not doing you or them any favours to go on doing it. **
I agree Emily, I’m 67 and attended art school after high school, A.I.P. When people tell me that they would have loved to pursue art. I tell them that’s it’s never too late if you truly have the desire. I’m a widow of 7 1/2 years and don’t know what I would have done without creating art. I encourage anyone at any age to begin and you are right about the plethora of free tutorials on UA-cam!
My grandmother started oil painting at 65 and continued for over 20 years.... Her paintings are our families most treasured heirlooms.... She once sold a painting to Sophia Loren and was so proud of it.
Thank you for this encouraging video, Emily. I started watercolor painting at age 77 during the first lockdown. I had no previous art experience except a couple of one off classes at the junior college that convinced me that I was terrible at watercolor. So I dug out those old supplies and started watching You Tube videos. Thanks to you and other artists as well as almost daily practice, I progressed rapidly. Soon I was posting my paintings and was astonished when a few friends wanted to buy them! What?!! I just delivered my first commission and the clients loved it. My only regret is I didn’t start sooner. I am 81 now. I used your corgi tutorial for our Christmas card this year. I’m thinking of joining your Patreon after the holiday craziness is over. I can use that commission money to pay for it! I also study Spanish on line every day. I love learning!
I love hearing about your grandfather. What a legacy he has left for all his family! I’ve just started with watercolors at the age of 68. I’ve never had an art class, but now I have UA-cam, the internet, and books to help me learn. My husband of 44 years is very supportive. He even got me more watercolors for Christmas. Thank you for sharing your talent and for your encouragement. Merry Christmas to you and all your family. ♥️🙏🏻 🎄
Your video couldn't have been timed more perfectly for me. Thank you for sharing the story of your sweet grandpa. My son is graduating high school this year so after he leaves home it will be tough, but I have a plan to start doing art full time. I'm 54 and if I'm blessed to live to my 80's, what' my excuse for not starting now if I have 30 years? I may have to hang up the roller skates in the next decade, but art is something I can do the rest of my life. Thank you, Emily!!
I’m 57 and never had training in art. But I’ve always wanted to learn. I recently discovered you and have begun to work through your tutorials. Thanks for sharing about your grandfather and the other wonderful artists who did so well in their later years of life. What an encouragement & inspiration.
I love the story about your grandpa! My grandma began painting (she painted with oils) at age 65 after her first bout with cancer. She painted for about 9 or 10 years before cancer returned. I remember receiving her hand painted cards on my birthday when I was young. My painting journey (watercolor) began 5 years ago at age 55. It's been a fun journey so far! I thank God for that day at a craft store when I picked up a cheap watercolor set and gave it a go. 🙂 I'm enjoying your watercolor mastery class! Thanks for the encouraging way that you teach!
Thank you, Emily! I had to retire early because I suddenly lost all hearing in my left ear and began having migraines quite frequently. Looking at the computer always triggered one for me. And my job was all computer work. I struggled for 3 years trying to find answers and "get it fixed" with no success. Then I happened upon watercolor and it literally saved me from deep depression. I stopped worrying about what I could no longer do and started working with watercolor more and more. It is now my passion. I so wish I had started sooner. It gives me such joy and is very therapeutic. Thank you for sharing your talent with us through your UA-cam videos. You are definitely one of my favorites😍 I am 67 now and can't wait to see where this journey takes me. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Uplifting and inspiring. It's true that the older you get, the less you care what others think. I'm able to say no more often and spend time on my creative pursuits without guilt.
Absolutely true Emily- I really didn't start painting until my mid fifties-after raising 4 kids I wanted to see if I could.... and I have...if you enjoy it, then you are a success (I love the story of your grandpa- praise God he became a Christian ( that in itself is life changing) Thank you for sharing !
The content of this video means so much to me as a fifty year old burgeoning artist-thank you for putting this out! As well-I consider how blessed you and your family are to have had a grandfather who found the Lord 🙌🏻❤️and subsequently brought tremendous beauty and love in the form of art that continues to exist, as well as extremely valued time and attention spent with you and your other family members as an amazing consequence! I wonder whether you have observed the same things I have in that when a person becomes Saved by Jesus, they often develop an intense passion for art which may not have existed prior!? This has been my experience following becoming Saved in 2018🙌🏻❤️🙏🏻and I find it FASCINATING-! We know God loves beauty-look at the immense beauty which He put into the world that absolutely did not have to be there-there is no other conclusion I can reach but to believe this as truth. There is no absolute utility in the thousands of multicolored flowers and bugs and fish as a mere tiny fraction of the beautiful ways that God painted His universe! If He made everything and all the “rules” there is no reason everything couldn’t have been just fine in grayscale😂alas that was not the choice He ultimately decided upon (thankfully!!)😂😂 His decision to make everything so beautiful-down to the sparkling reflections of light in the eyes of His beloved people-it’s all overwhelming in the best possible way to consider…. I am so often curious as to whether other people have also observed the frequency with which new Believers begin to create beautiful art in close proximity to becoming indwelled by the Holy Spirit! Thank you again for the video-it was a bright light in my day🥰
What a beautiful, inspiring girl you are. I’m 77 years old and I’m trying to watercolour. I can’t paint or draw but I’m so enjoying this season’s life. Thank you darling for your encouragement ❤❤❤
I'm 62 now. I started watercolour painting six years ago. I do not have an artistic background, although there was a small voice inside me that always told me I wanted to be an artist. It was a flash of divine inspiration that finally set me on the path to becoming an artist at 56 years old. I haven't looked back, and every painting, even the ones that fail, brings me that much closer to mastering the difficult medium of watercolour. Merry🎄 and Happy Holidays to you and your family, Emily. Your grandpa sounds like he was an amazing man.
That's what I like the most about your teaching, it's that "you can do it" energy you never miss to glaze on top. This video is like window opening on fresh air and vast landscape beauty. Thank you. I wish you a nice Hollyday time with your Family and loved ones.
Emily, thank you so much for this encouragement. I’ll be 80 in two months and I started investigating art in the last few months. I think you are a fantastic teacher who cares that we all reach our goals and potential. My expectations are to have a wonderful time!
Thank you so much for this post and perspective. It was what I needed, when I needed at 3:45 am. I just turned 60. I just celebrated 2 years of Breast Cancer free and I am now starting my 5 “ Creative” years to retirement and just today I mentioned to my husband that after the last 2 years where I was reacting to my life’s health 😮needs, I now needed to be more intentional in defining and dedicating time to learn my art.
When I retired, at 70, I decided to dabble in watercolour (my favourite art form), even though I thought I had zero talent. Now art is my priority every day, partly because I'm so aware that my time is limited. My definition of success doesn't involve selling, though I have friends who offer to pay for paintings. I just aspire to learn more and more, and to improve at sketching and watercolour. It's so rewaring!
This is so encouraging, thank you. I played around with art as a child but life got in the way. I started watching watercolor videos in 2020 when everything shut down. I have been the caregiver of my mom who just passed away in October 2023. Now I know that I can continue to grow in my art journey, I am 69 and plan on getting an RV and traveling around finding interesting places to visit and hopefully paint. Thank you for the encouragement. I am also a member of your watercolor mastery class.
I needed this 🥺 my degree is working with kids and families. Worked in customer service, food, senior care ect. Always wanted to get into art but made excuses it’ll take too long. Now that I’m learning nails I want to do art nails not just do the“basic” stuff. I can do this 🥺 Thankyou!
This is an excellent video that felt as though it were aimed squarely at me!! I realise I need to get a grip of my fears and just do it. So what if I never want anyone see my paintings, and so what if they are really not very good. I must remember the emotions I felt, or was able to block during my time with a brush, pencil or pen. Such a timely video…thank you so much Emily. Your Grandfather’s story, along with his paintings was a wonderful reminder of just what is possible. We are not set in stone as we get older, but remain fluid and able to learn.
Hullo Emily, I agree with you and starting anything that you want to do, the time to start is RIGHT NOW! No one knows how long they have to do anything, I have had a full Career as a working artist and the last 15 years of work was digital. Now I have come back to paper and paint, and an occasional canvas. And I hope to actually create some art that is not thrown away at the end of the day. (This was a common practice for most graphic design firms before everybody went digital) i’m glad you’re continuing to create content for your viewers,I wish you only the best!
Wow! Incredibly inspirational. I turned 70 this year and took up watercolor 3 years ago. Loved your grandad’s story. Look forward to meeting him in heaven 😇. Thank you and Merry Christmas
Thanks for your video, I started painting after I retired, as a boy I wanted to go to art school, because I drew very well, but life pushed me towards other paths. Now I've arrived at watercolor and I enjoy it and I get angry, but I continue, it's nice to always learn something new... Many Happy Holidays!!!
Thanks for sharing this inspirational message of encouragement, passion, & motivation for older beginner artists like myself. It’s really been a wonderful boost to my confidence this week & looking forward to doing more artwork in the New Year 2024! Hope you’re enjoying a wonderful day & Happy Holidays! 🎄❄️🎊🎆🥰
a person is NEVER too old to start being creative and trying to start an art career and age def can make a person more confident in what they do and have them not caring about any negative feedback (constructive is good, saying something is crap, does not hep )
Thank you Emily for sharing this inspirational wisdom. I'm 54 now and returned to art at the age of 51. My thoughts were, that I was too old to start a business! Last year I did and I am loving every step so far. My aim is to become a professional artist no matter what obstacles come my way and definitely age won't be one. Thank you for your encouragement. Love your videos
God bless you! Thank you for the inspiration. I dabble in acrylics and watercolor and am always worried about other people liking what I have created. You are right, I should just be concerned about me liking it.
This was the kick in the butt I needed! I have slacked off on my painting the last couple of years. I need to get back into painting more often. Will hit 66 in 2024. No time to waste!
Perfect timing as I very recently decided to pick up my brushes and pencils again and concentrate on my art. And yes the thought of being almost 60 and wondering if I should even bother at this point in my life has crossed my mind. Thank you so much for this! ❤
This video brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for this encouraging message!! I am a mom of 3 kids and between all the things, I have a hard time fitting in art. I'm 43 now and my kids will be in my home at least until I'm 54. I often feel like I'm missing my opportunity to be an artist, and have to remind myself that I'm fulfilling my purpose as a wife and mom. It is encouraging though, to know that art will be waiting for me when I can fit it in here and there. Blessings to you!
Emily, thank you. This is an awesome video. I did not start painting till I retired. I absolutely love, watercolor and oil painting, and I do it every day. My greatest joy is when one of my grandchildren asks for a painting, to adore their bedroom or dorm room. Most of my watercolor are cards and I love to send them out for birthdays and anniversaries or just to tell people that I love them.this video is so inspiring. I hope other people watch it and find the joy that art can bring to their lives. Thanks again Emily, you’re a joy to watch.
Oh thank you Emily! I am 71 and have tried since a little girl to do this. Have been discouraged many times. But you have answered my question that has been at the back of my mind. You have opened the door I had closed!
You're absolutely right. I'm 67 and just began watercolor painting in earnest in July of this year and I'm fairly pleased (but not satisfied) with my progress.
Don't be discouraged at what you deem to be a lack of progress. Watercolour is a difficult medium to master. It takes not just years but decades to master it, and you've only been painting for five months. Just relax and enjoy the process. Keep all of your paintings as you continue the journey, so that in a few years you'll be able to see how much progress you've made. I speak from experience when I say you'll be astounded when you compare the paintings you made as a beginner to the ones you did as a more advanced artist. 😃
Emily this video brought me to tears. Thank you for this amazing inspiration! Looking forward to continuing to watch this channel and learning new techniques from your subscription service in the new year.
Emily. You do bring so many facets to art, to watercolor. All that you share of your talent, of your perspectives, of your ups and downs, fuels my heart and encourages me to continue with art, especially when i feel that, yep, too much time (in years) has elapsed since loving to draw (horses) as a child. I still love to draw horses, however rusty I am. Your watercolor tutorials are tops. Thank you.
Thanks for this video! I am 70 and just beginning this watercolor journey. I am not sure where this will lead but I am trying to enjoy the process and find the patience, rhythm, and skills to move along this artistic road.
Love the story about your Grampa! I, too, come from a family of Artists. Though, a hand injury over 20 yrs ago stopped my artistic endeavors. I'm happy to say because of you and a few others my desire to try to paint again has blossomed. I didn't do watercolor so there is much to learn, but I'm grateful to you for your lessons, enthusiasm and kindness, Emily.
Loved this video. I’ve always been creative and had a passion for drawing and painting and sculpting….but as you said, things distracted me or got in the way. Now, at 66 I am able to delve deeply into art and find my own personal style. Your teaching style is PERFECT for me and I am learning so much from your course and tutorials. You gave me confidence and I appreciate the encouragement so much.
Thank you for posting this video! It is an encouragement to me because I am in this boat. I have a few more years before retirement and then I want to jump into art full time! I thoroughly enjoy watching your insightful and positive art videos. You and your sister are very talented! You both produce wonderful art. What I find really awesome is how you interact with each other and how you promote family and family values!!! I can totally relate I also have a twin and we have worked in the same field since graduating from college! We both love to create art but in different mediums also. May God continue to bless you, your awesome career and your family!
Reminds me of when I was in France at my ex and one day I took a stroll through a residential area and on my way back an old woman started talking to me when I walked past her house. I was still learning french so it was a bit difficult but she told me she was 80 years old and had started learning english the year before. So yeah... just pick up a new hobby whatever age you're at.
Great video! I feel like this thought goes through every new artist’s mind. I’ve been in your mastery program for over a year now and my skills along with my passion for watercolor have grown immensely. Thank you so much for sharing your teaching and painting talents (and your grandpas!) with the world ❤️ Happy holidays and looking forward to a new year full of watercolor painting! 🥳
Wow Emily, just what I needed right now. Your video drives me to tears. This is so inspiring and gives me hope for the future. I also started late in life, and always feel there is not enough time left. thank you very much for your kind words.
Hi Emily! I'm 58 and have been making art and now I'm also a writer and have 2 UA-cam channels, and you're right!! I just became a Resident artist for 2 local organizations for persons with disabilities and those who have experienced mental health issues. I'm so thrilled and blessed to be given this wonderful opportunity late in life and I have started doing the drawings for it. Thanks so much for your positive mindset!! I found your channel earlier today and am bookmarking it!! Do you have a Patreon? I just watched your video on New Year's 2023 and loved it!!❤😊 Take care dear.😊❤
So inspiring Emily. I often feel like time is running out and I hope I can get to the skill level I want to be but when I get there I know it will change. 😂 having more time and a little larger pocket book is definitely helpful. I can’t imagine buying all the supplies when we were young adults. 😂
Thank you for sharing permission to continue with my watercolor passion. I enjoy painting daily with you and have developed a lot of muscle memory and skill. Thank you for the daily challenges that help us find techniques.
Your message is so powerful! This message is so incredibly inspiring, yet it is solidly based on fact. It is inspiring so many people who yearn to do art and wonder if they should try. You are a great artist, but you are a great mentor of artists. God bless You and have a happy holidays knowing you have given this talk as such a wonderful Christmas gift to so many. Your face is so lit up with kindness as you deliver this message so poignantly.
You really inspire me. I just found your channel and have never attempted watercolors although I’m an artist. I have already got myself what I need. I will be watching. Happy New Year and all the best in 2024.
Thanks for the pep talk and thank you for all your videos that have taught me so much and encouraged me to keep making art. Your bright outlook is always a blessing.
I'm 65 and my husband took my paintings to a gallery owner. He wants to show my art. Any advice on pricing? This is weird to me. I just painted for the love of art. Now I have people interested in them. I have no idea what I'm doing.

I am 81 years young and blasting away with my watercolor painting! Just do it wherever you are in life.
Sharon, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. I know this must be a lonely time for you. I am glad that you've found some joy in watercolor painting. And as Emily says, it's the passion for doing something that makes us great or happy or whole. Many good wishes for success in your endeavors.

❤ I’m 57 too.
If He made everything and all the “rules” there is no reason everything couldn’t have been just fine in grayscale😂alas that was not the choice He ultimately decided upon (thankfully!!)😂😂
His decision to make everything so beautiful-down to the sparkling reflections of light in the eyes of His beloved people-it’s all overwhelming in the best possible way to consider….
Hooray! 🙌❤️
Amazing! Talent is completely overrated. :-)
Good one Emily! I started young but it’s still so inspiring to see those excelling late in life. Loved hearing about your grandfather!
Thank you so much, Steve! ❤️ Merry Christmas to you!
I’m so sorry for your loss. What a tough year for you. But I love your plan of traveling around and painting! Enjoy the journey! ❤️
You got this! ❤️🙌
Merry Christmas to you, too!
I’m 13 and I really want to get serious with art and I want to sell my art when I’m good at it❤❤❤❤.
I just need patience and I think it will look good
Thanks for your video, I started painting after I retired, as a boy I wanted to go to art school, because I drew very well, but life pushed me towards other paths.
Thanks for sharing this!!
You won’t regret it! ❤️🙌
Started a few years ago age 57 - and selling commissions. Love your classes!! TY
Perfect timing as I very recently decided to pick up my brushes and pencils again and concentrate on my art. And yes the thought of being almost 60 and wondering if I should even bother at this point in my life has crossed my mind. Thank you so much for this! ❤
So inspiring! I’m 57 and I’ve become obsessed with alcohol and acrylic markers. I would love to make art full time.
You can do this!! ❤️🙌
Thank you.
Wonderful content and inspiring talk. I didn't start until I was well past 50 and I find it is such a valuable part of my life. Thank you,.
I love this! Thanks for commenting. I wish you so much joy on your art journey!
You give me hope I am 63 and just starting in watercolour I think I will never get it but I hope to keep trying.. ❤
You can do it! 🙌❤️
Wow, what a beautiful story and great memories of grandpa.
Thank you! 💕
Thank you for sharing your grandfather’s story and the legacy he left behind as a result of his artistic endeavor. Needed this encouragement.
What a nice comment! Best of luck to you as you transition to art full time! It’s so very rewarding!
Thank you! What wonderful encouragement and enthusiasm!
Love that!
Very encouraging and I'm so glad your grandpa became Christian ... wow, just 10 years of painting!
This was an incredible and inspiring video. You are truly an amazing human being!
I feel like my art is a journey , not a goal. I started Watercolors 6 years ago.
Wow Emily, just what I needed right now. Your video drives me to tears. This is so inspiring and gives me hope for the future. I also started late in life, and always feel there is not enough time left. thank you very much for your kind words.
You are so welcome! ❤️
Yes it definitely helps to have more resources later in life!
You are so inspiring, thanks for the support. Merry Christmas
Thank you for sharing permission to continue with my watercolor passion. I enjoy painting daily with you and have developed a lot of muscle memory and skill. Thank you for the daily challenges that help us find techniques.
It’s my pleasure! 💕
Thank you Emily, I just needed this❤❤❤

You really inspire me. I just found your channel and have never attempted watercolors although I’m an artist. I have already got myself what I need. I will be watching. Happy New Year and all the best in 2024.
Very inspiring with God's good timing as I will retire this coming year. Thank you very much. MERRY CHRISTMAS

I'm 65 and my husband took my paintings to a gallery owner. He wants to show my art. Any advice on pricing? This is weird to me. I just painted for the love of art. Now I have people interested in them. I have no idea what I'm doing.
