You are a fellow ENCOURAGER!!!! I shared on 5 platforms! There are artists that do well... there are teachers that can teach but not do great paintings ... there are encouraging people that can do neither ... but God wrapped you up with all 3!!! Thank God!!!
Gorgeous painting. I haven't had the nerve to try something that large yet, mainly due to storage aspects. I love the glow of light in the little girl's hair. That's beautiful. I love your use of color as well. I keep trying and soldier on. Lol. I'm getting too old to expect fame and fortune. That ship has passed. Now I'm looking forward to my legacy as a mother, nana and artist. I will have plenty of art to leave my children and grandchildren. I'm also teaching my granddaughter how to draw and paint. She's a natural. 5 years old and she's been doing art for 3 years. They're never too young to start. Now when she comes over we pull out a big container of different art and crafting supplies and work for as long as she wants. I'm teaching her watercolor techniques. She's already great at mixing colors and blending. It's so cathartic to watch her work.
So much wisdom here, Emily! You respond to so many things that we say to ourselves. We use high quality art products and it’s so much better. We agree. And we have some unfinished work……last weekend we pulled out something we put aside 11 months ago. It was too hard to paint from a photo. We realized we didn’t have the skills we needed to paint from the photo without guidance. But this past weekend, we pushed through and though we didn’t get what we imagined or hoped for, we did gain skill and learned more about our abilities. Thanks for the validation. Sending this to my painting partner. 🎨🎨🎨
Thank you . I have a watercolor that I started and stopped a long time ago and your right I need to get it out and try and finish it thanks for the encouragement to do it.
Your painting is absolutely gorgeous. I agree with most of what you say except for one small point. Sometimes the best thing to do is to put a painting that's at the ugly phase aside for a little while. Then go back to it with fresh eyes and reevaluate it. Most of the time you'll see that your initial evaluation of it was skewed and you'll be ready to carry on with it.
So beautiful, thanks for your wonderful encouragement, I feel that you read into my mind…. I will try harder with a « laisser-aller » feeling. Thanks 😊
This was a message I ABSOLUTELY needed to hear. I am a Virgo with OCPD, so fear of imperfection is basically hardwired into my brain and is a major obstacle in my art. There is a special project I want to tackle as a gift for my mother, but I'm TERRIFIED of even starting it because that Voice is telling me it's punching WAY above my weight class and there's no way I can do it right and if it isn't absolutely perfect then I'm an absolute failure and OMG STFU ALREADY. The real irony is, I was just talking about all of this an hour ago with my BFF, and then this pops up in my recommendations. Maybe the Universe is trying to send me a message? Thank you for this. Wonderful piece, and wonderful message. Blessings.
Thank you for sharing your personal challenges, thoughts on how to achieve success, and many words of wisdom, and this very beautiful painting!! This took me back many years when my own daughter played in a pond quietly!!
What a wonderful video. Love the painting, love the knowledge shared, so many excellent thoughts. Let’s all use abundance as a theme for the year 😍as well as overcoming “FEAR” forever more!
Hullo Emily, I enjoyed watching and listening to your recommendations for simply getting on with your painting! Well spoken, so to the point as well! Thank you. You are truly inspirational and very encouraging to all. This advice is for everyone who has been or is trying to become a painter. Casual or professional it doesn’t matter, we all need to be reminded on occasion and this video can be that! Please take care, be safe and enjoy your Art life!
Emily. Your insights regarding thwarts to creative processes and you r succinct and encouraging means of verbal expression, along with videos of your painting (and sometimes drawing) unfolding s are so meaningful. Thank you.
I was in awe of watching you paint, and seeing this beautiful painting unfold. Such well worded, wonderful advice. One way of looking at the "good supplies" issue use is that one already spent the money, so use it! And on many occasions, what I like about a painting is what I did the quickest with least amount of fuss.
Thank you so much for that video. Thanks god you finish that project because the result is stunning... there's a touch of magic in there that make my soul feels good.
This painting is absolutely beautiful. It needed to be finished. Thanks for this encouraging video! Tips we could use for many facets of our lives! Thank you for posting this.
Such a beautiful painting. You are always a wonderful voice of encouragement. Just a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you so much for showing us this video❤
These are meant as painting tips but looking at them overall - each one of them could be a "Life Lesson" tip also. At least that is how I saw them. Thank you for sharing.
You have touched on everything I feel when painting. Unfortunately, I have stopped painting painting due to lack of co nfidence. Thank you for these encouraging words. They resonated with me and I am sure others. ❤
Please pick up your brushes again. Don't let a lack of confidence hold you back. Confidence comes with practice. If your paintings don't turn out how you want them to just keep in mind that even master artists have their moments of self-doubt, and produce paintings they loathe and throw in the trash.
I think what Emily said is important: Play! It's not always about the end result, but the journey, the unpredictability of the paint... I hope you'll pick up painting again...Good luck!
Thanks Emily. My concern is being shy about showing others my art, which means I need to gain more confidence. I've been doing art since HS but have only had a few lessons. You are helping me gain that confidence through your positive and encouraging attitude. Have a Blessed New Year!
dear emily i need some help! online i found out about a few people who say that daniel smith s misslabeling lightfastness on some of theyr watercolor, these people tested the color for like a year keepeng a sheet of paper on a windor. some color, like anthraquinoid redpr 177, resulted faded even tho it says on the tube that the color is supposed to be a 1 on the astm scale... im not sure now if i should trust these home made tests or the company daniel smith, one of theyr fugitive color is actually moonglow, which loses it's warm tone after ben exposed to light for a few mounths, even tho moonglow is actually a 1 on the astm scale, can you give me some advice about this situation? thank you, your video are really helpful and you're a great teacher!
Hello! I am not a pigment expert, so I would trust those who have lightfast tested the paints. Kimberly Crick’s channel is a great resource. That said, Daniel Smith is a fantastic brand, even if one of their colors (Moonglow) is mislabeled. Don’t throw out the whole brand because one color is misrepresented. :-)
@@EmilyOlsonArt thank you dear, I'm not planning on avoiding Daniel Smith per whole, but there are multiple colors (like 20 or 30) that are mislabeled... You might wanna do a video about it, it would really help us understand the brand better.
Emily..i feel as a beginner one should deliberately waste few targeted supplies like paper pads only for techniques...then that hesitation will be lost
Is there a way you can show how to get back to watercolor painting when you have no feeling in your hands? I can't feel whether I'm holding the paint brush or not, so sometimes it falls out of my hand and makes a mistake with the painter. Whatever, but this is something that's just not going to go away anymore and I wish there were some kind of a gadget or a way to figure out how to continue to paint
I Beth. Check out the artwork of Joni Earikson Tada and other artists with disabilities. A local occupational therapist might also be a good resource. There are special braces that are made to hold specialized tools but they are often expensive. Sometimes a basic brace can be retrofitted with things like duct tape, stretchy tape or velcro to do what you want. Keep researching and trying different things. Experiment until you find what works for you. We don't have to give up doing things we love simply because we can no longer do them the usual way.
Hullo Beth, I met a guy in the rehabilitation hospital and he had always been an Artist and he refused to let. His spinal cord injury stop him! He was a quadriplegic (limited use of his hands) he uses gloves with different brushes glued to them! He cannot hold a brush, but wearing a glove, most everyone knows how to do! He did struggle getting a technique to do what he wanted, but eventually he did, it did not happen right away. You can do something similar just keep going and never let any difficulties stop you!

She sure is!
I can't count how many times I was inspired to get up from my bed and paint! Emily is a treasure and its a pleasure to watch and listen.
I agree with the paper, i have a hard time painting on anything but my arches.

Can this painting be put upon your website?

If you hate what you create and you feel you wasted your time and supplies, turn it into an abstract, or tear it into pieces and make a collage.
👍😊
Absolutely perfect timing, and wonderful, encouraging suggestions. The beautiful details of your painting-in-process are also inspiring!
