Titan I'm old school machinist started sweeping floors at at machine shop back in the early 70's. Then my boss asked if I wanted to run one of the machines well that's when it all started. The man that trained me was very old but he knew a lot. Told me to start buying tools and stuff. So I got a Kennedy tool box and started buy mic's calipers and stuff, I work at that shop for 5 years. I was in the business for 25 years worked on the F16, F111 at General Dynamics work there for 12 years. Got layed off and work at severed shops after that. Now I am a Mechanical Designer I'm, 67 years old now but love what I do. It's god to see your show when it was on TV but I like your you tube videos. I do miss the shop life but my knees couldn't handle the standing up all the time. You're doing a good job with young one, keep up the good work and god bless.

Since the 1980’s I’ve been hearing about how robots were gonna replace machinists…..and they did….somewhat…..over 30 years. I do the work of 5 machinists now thanks to ever better cnc machines. I always suspected that the front office / totally digital jobs like HR, accounting, and even engineering would get totally automated before me. But I’m not a production machinist. I work in prototyping and design. I think most people don’t realize the skill, dexterity, and attention to detail needed to make a high quality part. They think we’re basically idiots pushing buttons. There real danger is AI collapsing the economy because so many cubicle dwellers get put out of work that no one has any money to buy things. I have a small job shop at my farm I was gonna run in retirement, so at least I’ll be able to fix a tractor shaft in exchange for a chicken. I heard a good rule of thumb for how in danger of AI taking your job you are. Whatever % of your job you can do remotely is how replaceable you are.

@@Bagginsess there might be some quantum leap forward in physical robotics, but AI will collapse the economy in the digital realm long before humanoid robots are advanced enough. I think it’s just as likely that AI will control biological bodies thru something like neauralink. We’re chemically powered, self replicating, and somewhat self healing. I’m not saying AI won’t take my job, I’m saying AI will take so many jobs that doing my job will be pointless even before a robot can do it.

8 years ago my CNC/Tool&Die Technologies instructors told the class they could see shops functioning with only 5-6 of the best people as a result of enhanced technology. Obviously, this would depend on the size of the shop. Instructors stressed students become as versatile as they could and never stop learning. Those most relied on will prevail.
There will always be a need for people to stock, deliver, and load materials, perform general maintenance, and put an idea on “paper.” While I don’t see AI being fully competent to generate a fool proof set of G-Code now, it doesn’t mean this won’t become a reality later. As mentioned in the video, people have already begun to develop the technology.
In general, I do feel AI will become one of the most dangerous threats to society. With NO limitations to AI, humans can easily be manipulated and start losing the ability to think for themselves on many levels. It’s the perfect set-up for criminal activity. A dumbed down society is easier to control.

No way around it, but implementation some places still boggle me.
So in my last place of work i got in as a temp replacing the painter that had a broken leg, then they found out i was machinist too and so i was put behind a manual grinding machine and did that for a few years, even if i barely touched a flat or axel grinding machine during my apprenticeship.
Then i was fired in the last depression around 2009 ( in the #5 round of firerings ) only to have the company call me again in 7 - 8 months later.
So i came back and primarily as a painter ( another of my many trades )
And they got me a robot to do the painting, that in itself not a bad idea.
      BUT !
First of all i was not painting all day, actually on average i only painted for 4 - 5 hours a day and that was me slowing down due to the new paint booth and not least drying room, well not at all good dimensioned, so i often had to stop and do other stuff, like setup encoders ASO, even cleaning the floor,,,, i dont care, i am there to earn money and do my job.
SO physically the robot was not needed as my already blown elbow and shoulders had absolutely no problems keeping up.
And now come the worst problems.
1: i was not schooled on programming the robot.
2: the robot ( with basic programs set up by supplier and i then modified a little to suit different things ) when it was painting was 300 % slower than when i was painting, though dont really count CUZ even at the robots speed the dry room could not keep up, even with the conveyor and robot on snail pace.
Mind you the robots pace was absolutely no problem for the company.
3: The robot used at least 100 % more paint, actually i am more inclined to say 200 %.
4: The filters in the paint booth had to be cleaned 2 times a week VS when i painted it had to be done once every 2 weeks.
That i did not find to be a good implementation of modern technology.
Inept middle management, can kill off a factory / good work environment in ( me snap fingers )
Just like these CNC guys, i very much doubt they get a new Machine to just sit there most of the time, or if it run all the time only having it run at 50 % speed.
At least that is not my understanding on good practice.

The current level of AI is not a threat to any job, but what can be concerning is the exponential rate of improvement of the technology. An AI today is pulling from the data on the internet, but that's not how Alpha Zero became so dominant at Go. After an AI is trained on initial data sets (like the internet for GPT) it can then be optimized much further for specific tasks through running simulations or even operating in the real world environment if given an optimization objectives and reward functions. For machining that would be meeting design requirements while minimizing cost per part which would take into account cut time, machine wear, material use, etc...
I believe like most jobs it can also be far easier to automate 90% or 99% of tasks since they can be more repetitive but the hard part comes in automating the rare jobs which make up the long tail to get to 100%. Jobs won't be automated unless machines can do 100% of the work, instead we'll just get more productive.
As a machinist or anyone else I wouldn't be too concerned though, labor intensive jobs are likely to be harder to automate fully than others and once a threshold number of jobs are automated without trainable replacement opportunities we will have to come up with a new economic system like a UBI or something similar to take care of society at which point Machining will continue to live on as a hobby for anyone who wants to practice it just like countless other skills including blacksmithing and more.

In the end it will be our fellow humans making us unemployed and we will all treat it as a natural disaster nobody could do anything against. As a future automated manufacturing engineer. I often talk with workers that are worried that they may lose their job when the new automated machine enters the shop. I always explain them my thoughts about automation and the place of the workers in a manufacture. I don't see the introduction of a automated cell has replacement for the workers job but has a way to make those workers more efficient. Yes they may not have the same task or even the same job title but it is a good thing. Workers can easily become operators with a simple formation.
I see the introduction of A.I in the industry the same way. It is just a way to make everyone more efficient. The job is still there! It is just transformed in a way to make the workers job easier, more efficient and in some case safer.
I do think that we need some basic rules to regulate A.I. and protect the users and others.

It will not replace the human brain since, it so efficient at only 30Wh of power, compared with a data center that needs a powerplant to back it up. An AI fully aware, on an energy budget, will employ humans to do the vast majority of tasks, since that will be more efficient. I had GPT-3 write some gcode and with a few corrective prompts, it would fave ran fine. Faster than I could type it out for sure. It was simple stuff, but a lot of job shop stuff is. I think you miss the mark when you talk about creativity and efficiency. A robot system doesn’t have to be more efficient they crush you on the time scale. AI can simulate a thousand different toolpaths and optimize for the best one in a fraction of the time a human can do one. Automation has always struggled with making robots use human tools. But soon, AI will design tools specifically for robots. Imagine a massive Swiss style machine. Feed it 12" diameter stock and produce no human touch practically anything.

Machine learning has gone from tackling abstract data sets to reproducing human speech and passing the Turing Test. The US air force has successfully trained AI to fly F-15s, analogous to a manual lathe or mill. And this is only the publicly available robots and AI.

Completely disagree with the entire assessment. CNC machining DID replace regular machinists and didn't just require them to learn a slightly different skillset. It's how 5 people can run 40 machines, that's at least 35 machinists having been replaced and considering the many axes of CNC machines, the speed etc it's probably more like a 4-5x of those 35.
And yes, ChatGPT is pretty bad at writing GCODE, it's also pretty bad at writing Python code and SVG code but the GPT family is basically just a tool to create an output with a correct syntax, there is no intent or targeted knowledge behind the responses. It literally just learned from reading examples. An AI specifically trained for CNC machining will easily outperform most machinists. Acting like somehow creative fixturing will be the saving grace is so absurd. Like an AI couldn't simulate a thousand ways to fixture something and all the stresses involved. It may even take into account real time pricing of materials, tools, power, demand etc. so it can choose a more tool-saving or a more material-efficient or the most time-efficient way to fixture or different toolspeeds. It will be able to learn from its own failures immediately and more importantly share those learning across multiple connected machine shops instantly.
That's not NOW but that is the future. Personally I am happy my actual job requires working with idiots because at least right now idiots and all their novel ways of being idiots are the only reason my job hasn't been automated and probably won't be automated for the foreseeable future.

Alright, I am now 20 secs in.
Before I continue, I'd like to say, that I absolutely LOVE the idea of AI.
What I don't love, is the current short-term profit oriented thinking.
Today, sadly a lot of CEOs think of new technologies as ever new ways to get rid of people to reduce the "cost" of working.
On the other hand, I believe new technologies - including AI - are always an opportunity to make work easier and safer for the workers involved.
To enable us to do more things in the same time frame, and even faster and better.
And, of course, to reduce outsourcing and get in-house knowledge again to maintain and more efficiently use said technologies.
And concerning the current state of the art:
Having the experts of today augment their processes with AI may actually be what enables the next breakthroughs towards a better world for every people of the world.
Better and more affordable tech for energy production and accumulation, water purification, reforestation, waste recycling, etc.
Having a neutral and completely open source AI replace governments may finally get rid of corruption and dispute.
Have the people define the world they want to live in, and the AI figure out the way to that goal.

At the end of the day CNC is just numbers, it's in the name, which creates a physical product. Companies such as Heller and Siemens have had R&D into doing this for several years.
