- Guys I don’t make videos longer than 15 minutes very often. This one is worth the watch until the end. So much valuable information and really smart ideas for making all of us more organized and saving us time. Big thank you to Doug for showing us all these tricks he’s learned over the last 30 years.

Doug started his own UA-cam Channel One Eye Customs
ua-cam.com/users/OneEyeCustoms
@Hometown Acres Awesome, thank you!!
I’m so glad I spent the time watching this whole video, it gave me inspiration to go out and start clearing and organizing my garage tomorrow. I decided to split half my garage into tools and the other half is my outdoor kitchen, being said I need to organize the tool side and this video helped me so much, thank you guys, I also just subscribed to Doug’s UA-cam channel.
Can you make smaller edits of this video? Maybe like workbench ideas, tool box organization, garage rail ideas, power tool organization?
Hi Doug, I tried to look up the foam website that you recommended but was unable to identify the different foam products that you used to park your hand tools. Can you list specifically what you ordered for the base and the cut outs? Thank you
This watch was worth every minute. I have spent 2 weekends prior to watching this and was feeling a bit overwhelmed because of the tools I have and trying to organize them . This gets a solid 10 for some practical, not over the top not expensive organization solutions.
The best part is when he said “I don’t waste time going to bars, and I don’t waste time watching sports. This is what I do with my time.” Amen to that brother! Thought I was the only one that felt that way.
I'm one of that rare breed.
Same made me feel proud.
Same here.
I like beer and sports, still want an organized shop!
@@garyharper2943 beer and sports are for losers. you're going to sit on your ass and watch negro felons toss a ball around? gay as fuck
I clicked on this video thinking that there was no way I'm going to watch an hour long youtube video no matter the subject matter. i was wrong... Very much enjoyed this video. Thank You
Me too
Me three! Haha
Yeah, what he said. Wow. Thanks guys.
In here with yall
Also, me. Thanks for letting us see a real shop!
This video has been the best hour I've ever spent on UA-cam. Thank your neighbor from the community!
This will help me so much. My husband died three weeks ago, and I am trying to figure out how to organize everything in his shop. He was a master mechanic, and the amount of tools is mind-boggling. This will give me a place to start and is so helpful. I really appreciate all the great ideas, because by God, I am going to learn to use all those tools.
I’m so sorry for your loss, it can be overwhelming but having everything organised will make it much easier to get started, take a basic mechanics course, it could be a great outlet for you and would make him proud!
My condolences 💐 your husband’s energy is all over the place and in those tools so as you learn to use them and work with them, you will feel him with you❤️🩹💝💖
so sorry for your loss, that is a commendable and beautiful pursuit.
Good luck sweetie. Learning how to use them is a big goal. Most of yesterdays mechanic tools are really usable on late m odern cars . The resale value is unbelievable low Ten cents on the dollar is not unbelievable. Its really sad. My good friend works at a big dealership and guys that been there 25 ;years dies and widows try to sell the husbands tools and thats the norm. Pawn shops it a nickel on the new dollar. I have 40 yeas of my own shops tools and cant bring myself to give them away I`m gonna wait till I day and let other give them away. That way the sale of my life's investment cant kill me .
Paraphrasing - If you have time to look for it in the disorganised shop, you have time time to organise the shop. That’s pure gold! I’m inspired. Thanks, guys.
Hands down the fold away grinders under the table. Excellent way to save space. Also the removable table vise!
That is on my to do list now!
Seriously. Absolutely genius
These were my favorite too! I never would have thought of that.
Flipping genius! Definitely stealing those.
I’m going to steal that idea, thank you, 👏👏👏
The ceiling mounted Vacuum and Bench grinder on a barn hinge blew me away! GENIUS!
Agreed. I am hauling around shopvacs everywhere... definitely want to know the make/model of those vaccuums! The modular trailer hitches were genius too!
What about emptying it?
@@gregvangelder6363 Agreed. Seems that would be a challenge
This level organization is not only a time saver but a cost saver. I have purchased the same tool or screw many times over because I just can’t put my hand on it and it would take me longer to find it than to buy it. What he’s doing will save you hundreds of dollars.
I have a magic garage. Anything that gets put in there, you will never find again until you buy another item just like it. Then presto-chango the missing item appears.
The hinged bench grinders are gold! Also that crazy hack for shaking spray paint cans using a reciprocating saw and old blade, WTF?!?? AWESOME!
@Hello How are you doing
I’m finally just now watching this all the way through after watching part of it multiple times.
Good video and amazing set up from Doug
This video auto played on my phonewhile I was working in my shop, and I was just listening for quite a bit, and I would have swore up and down that Doug was your 72yr old retiree that was enjoying his good years tinkering in his shop... Dudes like 45 maybe... 😆 😂
Thanks, I’m actually 55 😊
I didn't get 30 minutes into this video before I had to go out to my garage and start cleaning and reorganizing. This is chock full of brilliant ideas.
Doug seems like a good guy ... the kind of guy who deserves a microphone of his own, so we can hear what he's saying.
are you deaf?
I'm building a new garage, I hack wood, electronics, automobile, golf cart projects. I never had a good place for a shop. I promise to organize! Thank you!
Just ...awesome! Thanks. "You can always throw another branch on the foxhole."
Brilliant! If I was 10% as organized as this guy I'd be more productive. 😃👍
I have a confession to make. I have gone back and watched this video multiple times. There are so many great ideas and things to see in this video that you just can't absorb it all in one or two "watchings". I am 60 years old and I can figure out how to organize things on my own, but seeing what Doug has done has shown me ways to organize that I would never have thought of. I share Doug's thoughts on being clean, neat and organized in my garage and seeing what he has done is very inspiring to see it all in completed form. This video should be required to be viewed by all us garage guys on You Tube. I have shared this video with all my friends and we have all discussed it amongst ourselves. And then your other video "Garage Makeover - The Hardest Part Is Getting Started" is the next logical step in implementing some of the ideas from this video. Adam your workbench makeover turned out great. Thank you for sharing this great information.
At so many levels Doug's organized garage has inspired me. I will be studying this video for improvements on my shop.As he said knowing where everything makes work faster and easier. Thank you for showing this video and I hope Dough let's you get into more detail on future shows.
I liked the TV in the shop. He can watch some of the game and be productive too.
So satisfying to watch. I think Doug and I share the same brain. He just has more time in the shop...
OMG, I hate this guy!!. I want to be half the man this guy is!! The paint shaker & sliding table top alone is worth the whole video. And he doesn't make me feel bad for having 3 brooms and dust pans in my garage. And that floor dust pan sales just went up 600% at amazon. The mobile work cart is from my mechanicing days. Keep them coming.
THAT'S A WORKSHOP?!!! I thought it was a kitchen at first glance.
The paint can shaker is a stroke of genius.
My favorite hack was finding someone with the desire to make a difference. I will agree with you. That toolbox wall was candy to my eye. What a bad ass neighbor.
the biggest take away… don’t waste time watching tv, especially overpaid sports for hours on end. The organization is awesome, It really inspired me to do more in my garage. The sliding table surface is great
If you do like TV and sports like I do, hang a few of them in your shop like I did. Now I still watch all of the football games and get stuff done like what Doug showed. I agree with your post though!!!
Good idea.
Also......
Don't watch any news.
Not watching news make life great.
Trust me I know.
The "sawsall"paint shaker wins the award for best hack!!
I think we all found this video by accident, because UA-cam wants us to be clean like this man. I hadn't intended on being lectured on how messy I am, but WOW that vacuum cleaner is the coolest thing ever!!! I'm only 4:49 into the video and had to pause to reflect on just how creative this man is.
Watched the whole thing, and wow. just wow! I couldve watched another 2 hours with more detail! Make more of these for sure!!
The stainless steel workbench is essentially what commercial kitchens are outfitted with. So check out a kitchen supply store or look for restaurant salvage. If you can catch a retail store being demolished, they will have heavy duty shelving and maybe carts too. Old discarded shopping carts have a ton of potential. Remove the basket but keep the handle and you have a sturdy dolly that could probably hold up anything short of a car engine. It's certainly capable of hauling around heavy bags of concrete and buckets.
The spray paint can shaker is amazing. It may be a bit excessive for the average person but I love it.
His garage is like a mecca to OCD. Beautiful... Simply beautiful 🥲
Okay. The hair on the back of my neck stood up when I saw the trailer hitch receiver and vise hack at the bench. Dude! This is not brain surgery, but it surely is ingenious, outside the box, power thinking. And of course I'm stealing it. Well done, Doug and Hometown has a new subscriber.
Favorite hack: The reciprocating saw rattle can paint shaker!
ok... that was perhaps the best hour of useable ideas and intelligent rational that I've ever watched on UA-cam. Thank you both. Awesome!
I watched this whole video...and I live in a 2nd floor apartment with on street parking. No garage or even a basement. great content.
For the foam shadow boards, make the bottom layer a different color. When it's missing, it's obvious.
I almost feel black would be more obvious than a color? Feels like your eye would notice that blank space easier, since the tools themselves have color on them.
@@EricJ0hansson I typically see a yellow base, then a dark gray or black cutout layer. So when a tool is removed, you see yellow where the tool should be
My favourite hack was the stainless steel bench with the bench grinders and vices cheers Graham
The shop vac and the fold away grinders. Watched the whole video.... some fantastic ideas. Well done gentlemen...two thumbs up
"for every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned" - Benjamin Franklin
You show all of those hacks and expect us to pick 1 as a favorite "c'mon man"(sorry couldn't help myself) 😆. The layout table and hanging vacuums were 2 of my favorites.
A place for everything and everything in its place. My uncle told me that when I was around 10, I'm 36 now and have never forgotten that.
This is really the essence of a "lean" lifestyle like paul Akers. Reducing waste, make life easier
This is one of those videos that if you did not finish, you go back to your history the next morning to catch up.
I enjoyed all of the hacks. Makes since and solve all my problems.
I watched every second of it. Thank you both for taking the time and sharing knowledge.
That's exactly what I did!
.
Definitely shared with friends and family
Well Done ~

As my late mother used to say...'a place for everything, and everything in its place'
Bought a very large high quality kitchen at Habitat for Humanity for $600 and installed it in my shop 15 years ago. best purchase I made. after watching this when I woke up, I decided to make my bed!
Hahahaha love it!
I don’t think Doug actually builds things other than storage ideas for his stuff. Some great ideas.
LOL...I thought the same thing!
I was glued to this video for the whole hour.! Doug has an excellent approach to problem solving and efficient working.
What impressed me the most about Doug’s workshop is the fact that he came up with a lot of cost effective solutions instead of just choosing to spend big money on over priced systems that rarely cater for your exact need. Also great work Adam on putting this content together.
Super clean shop. "there are guys out there who spend thousand and thousands of dollars" That tells me alot
Favorite hack? I am in love with 85% of them and will eventually find a way into my shop. The stanley organizers for hardware on the shelf will be job number 1. Mainly due to fact that i have them and and i can't stand having to unstack them to get to specific hardware that i need for a particular diy job!
This is what I call, "Internet Gold". Great video Adam and Doug. Makes me wish I had a garage to set up like that. My favorite thing is seeing the "One Eye Customs" sticker and then later finding out Doug has one good eye. Also, the sticky note for lent tools is a great idea. Now you won't be able to get away with "borrowing" one of Doug's tools and keeping it. ha
Sometimes the one-eyed man sees with much clarity...
I do tons of spray paint jobs....how have I never seen that shaker setup!?...The longest video I have watched on UA-cam DYI.....Im a place for everything guy with to much everything ..what a help....thanks guys....pretty sure this raises you up to at least a C lister....:)
Wow. This is a treasure trove of ideas. Loved everything, especially tray to catch mess under band saw, floating table top with storage for long items inside, trailer hitch and door hinge mounted bench equipment, vacuum and air hose equipment mounted on ceiling, and so much more. Thanks for sharing!
Great organization ideas! Much appreciation from a fellow monocular person, CyPops.
I could watch Doug all day, he is such a great communicator and always makes what ever he is doing sound interesting. Adam you are so lucky to have such a generous neighbour. 90% of Dougs ideas and tweaks are so simple once seen, but it takes a genius like Doug to enlighten us.
Can Doug make his own channel?
I agree Andrew. He was great to watch and a good buddy to have I’d say. I’ll look forward to seeing more content from him in the future?
😅😅😅
This video is so sophisticated. It's almost like garage philosophy. I've never heard anyone with such clear and precise explanations about the process we men go through in the shop environment. Especially at 8:40 when he explains that you enter your shop, then spend 15 minutes searching for a tool--then repeat the process again the next day. I have two speed squares and both of them have vanished somewhere in my shop, and I've been looking for 2 days now, wasting at least 30 minutes. His point about time wasted searching for tools is so important! What an inspiring video, and how dumb I feel now for not having a place for my speed squares.
I'm off from work for the next 5 days. I'm going into my shop and I'm not coming out until I've got a working Sawzall paint can shaker, a sliding workbench top w/ storage underneath, safety glasses storage, a trailer hitch mounted bench vise, PVC cordless tool organizer, hideable hinge-mounted bench grinder, garage door rail-attached vacuum & air hose reel. Thanks to your neighbor Doug for the great ideas!
Hey JD, just curious how you made out and if you were able to find some time to get some projects done. Would love to hear your input!
My new hero this guy has his shop basically how we all wish ours were
I could easily watch another hour of hacks! My favorite was the removable vise's on the trailer hitches.
Tip: cut the foam in smaller modular sizes. Allows you reorganize a drawer, swap out if screwdrivers change, or move to a totally different drawer or toolbox.
One big no no I saw in this AMAZING shop! The hand held expensive power tools are out in the open right inside of a door with a huge glass window. Not saying it would be an easy task to "borrow" them, but out of sight out of mind is something to keep in mind.
Yea I agree, but I have several anti borrow methods in place. Like the sign says above my sink. “Nothing here worth dying for” I despise a thief..
@@OneEyeCustoms Amen BROTHER! Very impressed with the shop btw! Engineer mindset, One who has worked for a living.
An old time roller blind might cure that problem.
@@carlcarlamos9055 It would help with the initial "peek" which means a ton! Unfortunately as soon as the window is broken and or door opened they are right there in plain sight and very easily accessible which is nice for the owner when working, but also nice for thieves. Dont get me wrong, I love this shop and all the thought behind it. Just something that I saw right away.
My favorites - Pool vacuum hose, trailer hitch mounts for vises, and clean-up brushes mounted at each tool - idea... as it would reduce the chances of cross contamination of work surfaces and/or waste/trash. While I group my tools, your friend did a nice job of showing an excellent reason to use the foam - a reason that I have yet to hear others mention - a reminder to track down a missing tool, or a note to self, that you loaned it out.
I was sitting down for my half hour lunch and saw this interesting video on my sidebar but saw it was an hour long. I don’t have time to sit for an hour to watch a video during my lunch. OMG, I’m glad I did, fascinating ideas and layout you showed. Many ideas and hacks to add to my garage workshops. Thank you for sharing.
I don't think I've ever been more impressed by organization.
This guy has the best organizational skills I have ever seen. An inspiration for sure.
I don’t ever comment on videos. But Neighbor Doug’s workshop is awesome! It’s hard to pick one hack as I say they’re all useful. But putting the air hoses and shop vac up and out of the way are my favorite. I’ll be figuring on how to make that happen in my workshop.
@Hello Josh how are you ding
I don't normally watch videos this long but enjoyed every minute of it.
This guy is the genuine MacGyver. Must be nice to have skills to put his shop together.
The dude is a genius with great taste in tools.
Showing this video in all school vocational classes, wood shop, metal, mechanics, painting art, etc, etc. Thank you all for this.
Love it. Well, my wife calls me a neat-freak but Doug takes the cake. Now, I am a tool fanatic but Doug is borderline tool hoarder 😁
This guy is on point! Take the pebble from his hand, grasshoppers! I totally agree the statement "if you have time to spend 15 minutes looking for something each time, you have time to keep it organized by putting it back when you are finished using it".
His garage is amazing actually. Love those ideas. Genius.
OH MY GOD. If you had any Idea how many hours I have spent on google looking for this exact kind of video, it would baffle your minds! This man is 100% genuis. Thank you both for taking the time to make and share this. (sorry If I'm "gushing",) but damn... I picked up so many ideas for my shop project (newly enclosed back patio) all from one video. (I got a lot of stuff) Thanks again guys!
I waited for Doug to demonstrate a cammed lock or clamp for holding his Layout table top still when not being slid open.....I musta blinked.
His hinged grinders And the Trailer hitch tool mounts are Gold!
I'm going to do the remote controlled shop vac 1st.
This video has my head spinning....not sure which hack to implement first!!! AMAZING video that will inevitably cost me a few bucks....I probably shouldn't have watched it!
His shop is stocked and organized better than my kitchen! AND he has a TV!
I have lost count of how many shop organisation/hack videos I've watched. This is one of the best ones I've seen!! I'm in the process of overhauling mine and I'll be implementing almost all of these ideas... I just went out to look how I can fit my vac on the ceiling!!!
Oh... and I had to do a "quick" repair on my polytunnel this morning which is right outside the workshop... 20 minutes I spent tripping over stuff trying to find the tools... I definitely have the time lol
I made “tool tags” for each member of my family to leave wherever they get a tool from.
The receiver hitch for the table top equipment was an awesome idea. 👏
@Hello Tom how are you doing
That dude is a genius. I love how you guys think.
I wouldn't call these hacks. These are ingenious/clever and well thought out. This was awesome.
Please ask your friend to replace his PVC airline with some sort of proper material. Standard PVC when filled with air can form a crack and explode and send shrapnel throughout the shop. Although it is unlikely, and most people will say it’s never happened to me, if it does happen the effects can be devastating. There are all sorts of materials that are more expensive than PVC but they are not cost prohibitive completely and are much much safer than using PVC. I am a master plumber and I’ve seen this issue many times before.
This is a really great video and he had a super nice shop and some really great ideas.
The most unique one asked to be the paint shaker
Thank you for the great comments, but there is no PVC used for high pressure air line. All the airlines are run with certified air hose. Nothing in PVC and yes I do know those concerns. Thanks again for the concern and looking out for others!!!
Thanks for the clarification. It does look like PVC hanging down is why I said something. I’ve seen way too many people do this and too many instances of people being hurt from it.
@@WiscoWoodShop , I think it is good to mention potential flaws that could result in a very catastrophic event. Fortunately, Dave has used proper materials. I once was asked to repair a leaking pneumatic system. When I was shown where the leak was, It turned out to be a piece of EMT electrical conduit. The original installer had threaded and installed it thinking that it was galvanized pipe. It was pressurized to 105psi.
@@OneEyeCustoms I went back and saw what I thought was an airline. The PVC that I saw is the one that you’re using for a handle to turn the crank. It makes more sense now. But at first I was just sure that was part of the system.
This is a Masterclass in shop organisation. So many great ideas. Thanks to both of you.
I love the steel tables with the fold away grinders and vices
I could also recommend you to someone better
When you see this guy again, would you please personally thank him for me? And I'm sure everyone else. I'm sharing this with literally everyone I know.
Picking Anacortes is impossible! Who'd think of a fold-away grinder? It's brilliant! The PVC pipe pieces to hold tools! The foam cut-outs - I'm getting PVC and foam today! Wait, it's Thanksgiving. Tomorrow!
@Hello Michael how are you doing
@@lydialas8756 Doing great - thank you. How about yourself?
I very much enjoyed your video. He had way to many hacks that I liked to mention. It was very nice of your neighbor to let you show us all his tools.
Harhar...
@36:16
as my grandpa used to say:
"You don't need to be the smartest, but you gotta know how to help yourself!"
Great shop with some unique solutions I will be stealing away for mine...
Thanks for sharing!
I was so impressed by this man that I showed this video to my wife, who is obsessed with organizing. His hack for grinders and the bench vise were my favorites. Thank you for the video.
My favorite "hack" was Doug himself. That guy is absolutely amazing to listen to and to see what he's done with his abilities and crafts! I agree with everything he said. I once was a scrambled mess, then learned about "lean" strategies and love what lean has done for me. Great vid, I loved that it was long! Thank you guys.
I suffer from 'no time and no space' to organize, but every time I make the time to make the space I'm glad I did it.
Haha! Love the One Eye Customs brand on the SnapOn toolbox. I too am onto my last chance with available eyes (due to cancer), and I too have a number of ‘one eyed’ jokes that make people groan. Great video, thanks. You can see how Doug has lived the continuous improvement mantra throughout his work life.
Love the fact that Doug obviously has disposable income, but very grounded to the idea that neat solutions don't always have to be the most expensive ones. This is a busy workshop that's extremely organized. "There's a place for everything" indeed!
Awesome video, awesome shop. I work with a fellow that is as organized if not more. Problem is, It carries over to every aspect of his life. OCD to the max, to the point where as he's talking to you he's brushing lint off of your shoulder. If he happens to stop at your house or shop, as you're talking to him he's picking things off the floor and setting them in the trash, constantly looking around and getting more tense as he eyeballs your messy workbench. It's a running joke, however it is absolutely true, that he drives his wife and family absolutely nuts because it carries over into the house. He has a "better way" for everything, and don't you forget it. It is an absolute awesome trait if you can keep it under control and keep it to yourself. Once you start crossing the line of critiquing your co-workers, it's time for therapy
OCD here for sure
I like the shop vacs and air hose placements.
that paper roll for glue ups is KEY!
Ok, this guy is FANTASTIC. I've been a fan of shop organization for many years and I still found several new ideas in this shop. Thanks so much to you and Doug for taking the time to make this video.
I have the same broom and dustpan on a stick !😂
And I also use clean paint brushes to keep my tools and areas clean. ❤️
I really like the vacuum mounted to the garage door opener. Before I finished watching the video, I was already planning my own setup.
From The Land “Down Under” this video is Life Changing 👍
Organizational skills. ? How is this a "hack" I'd call them great tips. Ideas. Ect. This is a great example of a man who understands attention to detail. Stop hacking start doing. Great job Doug
