Something I found too is if you build it to what you currently have and later on decide to expand, chances are whatever storage bins you used before will no longer be available so whatever you end up doing won't match what you already have and you may have to tear out what you have and start over...so yes, plan for much more than you need, and buy extra bins.
@@wildbill23c Sounds like the correct plan... However, just buying the empty storage boxes for this project (152 i.e. 19x8) would set you back almost $260! Quite a bit of change for a wall of empty boxes, and being plastic, they may not last for very long.
@@TomOrman I'd like to get my hands on a few of the old metal parts storage bins like from hardware stores, those would be awesome for a home/garage shop.
Just be sure to buy some extra containers to replace the ones that break or wear in the future. Always seems like I build something using a product as a base part and the company stops making that item 6 months later...
Or go with a 'too big to fail' company?.... e.g. IKEA has been making Expedit bookcases since decades, they stopped the line & replaced with Kallax --- which has the same size cubby holes. So all kinds of drawers/inserts for it since decades, and decades to come (even some competitors sell fitting stuff).
Yeah I've been caught out a few times when I just buy "enough". Then 6 months later want to expand and the dimensions of the new contains are just out by a tad.
April I think you are wonderful. Last weekend (with 3 leftover deck boards ) I made holders for my weedeaters, backpack blower and other lawn equipment. The only thing left on the floor of my shed is my zero turn and my push mower. You could not walk in my shed before last weekend. Thank you for the ideas and for keeping them simple, your awesome and I watch your channel now.
Great Job April!!! I have done something similar; at most lumber companies or big box stores they have a product for wire hanging displays and come in 4X8 sheets. Grooves are already in place and the grooves are 1/2" wide and deep. Perfect for plastic totes. Just a thought for those who are without dado heads or routers. Nice video!
Brillant! This is one of the most usefull projects I've seen you undertake. Plus, if folks don't have a table saw with a dado stack or a router to cut dadoes, one just has to fasten equally spaced blocks cut from wood stock. One's local home improvement center will cut larger sheets of plywood down if you ask nicely. Then, you just need a circular saw and screws to put everything together. Thanks again for another great project!
I love this storage solution. A fantastic use of space, and about the best way I've seen for making all those various nuts, bolts, hinges, fittings, etc., etc., accessible and easy to find. Also, being able to pull out a container, use what I need and put it back easily makes it much more likely I will actually put them away when I'm done. Great idea, and thanks.
Well, my shop isn't anywhere NEAR as elaborate as your's, but I am pretty proud of it anyway. I got 2 of those 10 x 17 temporary carports from harbor freight (one of which I used as a shelter for my horses). Since I did not use the ends for the horses, that gave me an extra zippered end. That allows me versatility with ventilation. I used a hanging shoe organizer (who has that many shoes anyway?) to organize a lot of my tools and supplies, hanging it from a side bar since I have no solid walls to screw anything into. Then I built myself a workbench! Not having a lot of spare cash to buy a lot of lumber, I built it out of some young tree trunks that I had cleared out of the pasture and some left over bits and pieces from other builds. I am very pleased with it and will be posting the video of it sometime this week. It's not fancy or pretty, but it works! 😊
April I love this idea. I hate those little storage compartment box bins everyone has. I can never have enough room in them for what goes inside. This is perfect 👌
pretty awesome there girlie. keep it up. I've been a carpenter for a lot of years whom never watches this stuff online. You've had my undivided attention for 2 hrs at least. Great Work, and I really like your style and taste!
Interesting! I built a similar system using cardboard boxes without shelves, simply holding the box above the one I want while I get it out. My inventory (lots of electronic components) is mostly lighter than the fixings you have, but otherwise works similarly. I hot glue a length of white corrugated paper on the outside & mark with a sharpie allowing easy change. This has been a great blessing for finding stuff & the cardboard being opaque to light keeps everything free from fading. Thanks for sharing!
I use the same type of containers for my LEGO collection in a variety of sizes and I have been planning a shelving system JUST like this one for when I get a house and have a room to dedicate to LEGO. Awesome project, I just found you and I'm really happy I did. And truer words were never spoken: "Whenever you're building storage solutions if you build it to your current inventory it's already too small. If you're gonna go through the effort of a project, go ahead and build in some extra room for growth." Thanks!
I don't have a wall for this, however, it has inspired me to combine a container system with a cleat. I've been shying away from "open" bins for small parts on a cleat due to collecting sawdust, but this reminds me that I can attach a clear container (with lid) to a cleat! BTW, I'm 59 and want to be just like you when I grow up. ;) Thanks for your content. So helpful!
@@SandBoxJohn Yes a library ladder would be a fun build but then it would be restricted to this one area and I wouldn't like that. I already have a step stool on hand and I like that it can be moved to any part of my shop.

You are just supper to watch! I love people that have great organizational skills. I was wondering how you got interested in woodworking? I grew up on a dairy farm and had a wonderful father, he was a great teacher. I’m 72 years old and just retired, on the farm dad taught me carpentry, plumbing, and how to repair farm machinery. All the years of home ownership, I have always done my own remodeling and repairs. I do have a shop and I have so many tools, it’s time to get organized. Watching lady’s work in the shop, I remember my friend, Mary and Tony, Mary’s father was a finish carpenter and Mary always love helping her Dad. Mary’s Husband, Tony was an engineer. Mary always said Tony can draw up a beautiful set of building plans, but did not know a hammer from a screwdriver, Lol.

April, wonderful! I've been describing this idea for the wall in our entry area for decor purposes. The dead corner space in the kitchen, shares the entry stair wall. You've demonstrated what I want for a space that has no room for an entry table! Thank you!!!
If I hadn't trashed my back I would be ripping off this idea in my garage. That's a great way to be able to store nuts bolt and all the misc. small parts that accumulate. Fantastic video April.
Just in time for my shop extension. I am adding 12FT. to my shop and before I sheet rock the walls I'll do just as you did, Great idea and I'll pass it on.
I did something very similar... but... instead of dados, I just ripped plywood to my desired thicknesses... then used gauges to install them. The finished product was quiet similar, though! Great work.
I did it like Matt as well, however after two years my containers began deteriorating (sagging and cracking). Now I can't seem to find the same size anywhere.
James Brand ... I bought an extra 20 and kept them unused in a box. I ended up needing them all by the time I moved out of my workspace. I intend to do this again, but build wooden boxes with plexiglass faces.
Nice, I build something similar a while ago. I added a little board in front of my shelf so I can put down the containers in case I just want to take something out of a container instead of taking the whole thing. Keep it up.
Hi April! Thanks for sharing that great organizer idea! I’m building a shop building over the next few weeks and will need just such a system to organize my do-dads, thingamjigs and whatchyamacallits. Great idea reusing the label from the boxes!
At 2:15, I heard a machine running and thought it was your saw, then you put your fingers practically on it and I had butterflies on the inside. I then noticed the blade was stopped and it was something else. Haha. Great build, you're very creative and I love watching what comes next.
you could even organize by color so like 1" screws get a blue lid, 2" screws get a yellow lid, etc. if you find it hard to find the lengths. so many options to customize that. love that wall!
@@AprilWilkerson I like the idea also. Plus it may help keep out some dust. Although with your awesome dust collector system you may not have that issue. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.

"If your building it to your current needs, it's already too small".....My uncle told me the same thing when I told him I built an equipment barn on my farm. He told me it should have been bigger. I said I haven't even told you how big it is, "doesn't matter, it's already too small" he says........he was right.
I did the same thing with dollar store containers. Yours are nicer. Since I don't have a dado stack I cut all the way through and nailed them in place on a divider. I lined up the supports onto both sides of the dividers since my nails were that long. On the end supports I had to grind off the nails but hey, it's a garage. I got the idea from a cool but expensive product called the EZ Studrack. The nice thing about this design, yours and mine, is that if you need adjustable shelves, you just cut them to fit. For taller items you don't need to use every slot. Just leave the ones above without shelves in them and you have the space. If your shelves fit snugly enough, they can stick out from the wall a fair amount. I have some gallon containers safely stored in mine. It is also part of a cubby design for tool storage that I copied from John Heinz' channel. But like you said, it' already time for a rebuild as my since I need some space for new tools.
I love this! I can't attach anything to my wall (I have a vapor barrier I can't puncture), but think I can rig something from the joists. Brilliant system, and exactly what I'm looking for -- I especially love your labeling system and the ability to take what you need to your work station.
Super cool. I built the same thing a few years back, but used the cheap 6 qt shoe containers. Great for light parts, but they sag a lot with heavy hardware. Your design and container use looks stronger, but just a word of caution for anyone looking to build with larger containers.
OMG. I'm in love. That's the best storage idea ever.. I've watched your channel here and there. But now I'm hooked. So thanks for the awesome sauce, video!

@@AprilWilkerson make it a folding one. An idea i have for it is having rotating boards as steps and then you can lift t hth e outside, and boom, folded ladder
Very nice installation! I have 60 parts drawers. Rather than put a single description on each they are numbered 1 through 60. I made up a spreadsheet that is sorted and printed in alphabetical order. This allows you to better utilize space by being able to put more than one item in each container.
As an oil painter, this would work fantastic for my oil paint tubes and even the jars of thinner, and the jars of medium....I might have to adapt it a little but this is great!
I am glad you thought ahead and built more than you needed. Stuff has a way of filling up space available, all of it. Unused space has a way of finding stuff to fill it. Are you going to have a ladder on wheels or something to elevate you to access to upper bins when you are using it? I bet you have some creative idea on how to solve this one also.
What a fantastic use of dead space. I love that fact that its doesn't take away from the floor space. Great project, April! I will have to do this to my work space aka garage.
I've used the plastic bins that 4X4 bandages come in. They must be thrown out by the thousands. Their about a cup or so in volume, but they're free and work for small items.
Great build, but why so high up? I made something similar, but used bus boy trays from Sam's Club ----really clears up clutter in the shop. Mine is mobile so it can move from shop to garage if needed. Keep on building !!
A step stool that integrates into the wall would be a great add on. There are fold flat designs that could be part of the wall and out comes a step stool. when done, poof part of the wall again.
Hey girl, you inspire so many young women and men as well, thank you!! Great channel and awesome storage idea. I will use it in my new shop, thanks again for sharing with us all. Any chance you might start a second channel? Maybe a vlog style more about you and your life? Thx John from AR 😎👍
Put a library style rolling ladder on that wall, especially if you plan on adding more of the same storage. Keep you from having to drag or roll something over to climb on to get to the upper shelves.
Step ladder or this often suggested idea that dozens of you have commented (please learn to read others before making your own same, its so annoying) either way you are going to drag/roll them around to where you need it.
Excelente idea. Mucho del tiempo perdido en un trabajo es por estar buscando repuestos pequeños o por no tenerlos de fácil acceso. Muy buenos todos tus vídeos.👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Great one April! You’re going to become a hardware store for your area! Cremona’s neighbors come over to borrow a cup o slab.. your neighbors are going to come over for a cup o hardware! Haha. 👍👍
Nice simple solution. Good idea to use those plastic containers much better than building all the boxes. Think it's to tall though you are going to end up hoarding stuff that you only are ever going to use once a year if that in those upper containers.
Love your storage project I recently built a wall unit with many shelves using dadoes. I cut mine with a router with a three-quarter inch straight bit. I have access to a CNC and next time I would cut the entire sheet with dadoes then cut my stanchions from that, live and learn I guess.
Flip-Flop April This is time and labor intensive way, not mention the dust with making dado !! Specially if you are going to make quite few of them . You could use 1/4 inch 4x8 Plywood as base or any thickness you want, sticking 1/2 inch stripped spacer the width you like then cut the final 4x8 to the final depth of the shelf you want .
Nice storage system. Having fasteners organized is such a time-saver. Also, I like how you have a wall between your wood and metal shops. The dust/debris from each craft seems to be especially problematic for the other.
The system seems flexible enough to add shelves into the slots instead of the bins. Just cut plywood to width and leave however many of the slots above empty for vertical space.
Spray foam, lol, I was like, what is that. Anyway, amazing what you are able to accomplish by yourself. Inspiration to me, as my wife isn't too interested in wood working (more so the end result lol), so it gives me some tips on how to do stuff like this with out having to call the buddies over.
Given the height of those boxes, I think a cool project would be one of those sliding ladders on a railing. Cool metal work and woodworking combo! Great vid as always!
Love it... Have been looking for a way to store all my stuff. I love to buy in bulk, so I am sure to have what I need, when I need it...Thanks, your awesome...
You could build little steps that either pull out or fold down from under those shelves so u don’t have to have a ladder or step stool to carry around or get in the way.
That is a great storage system.
I agree if you build to your current needs, you are already out of space
Blessings to you and your family

That is a lot of storage but you make a great point you need to plan for the future. Great video as always!
It is a lot, but I bet it gets filled up quickly. : ) As things always seem to.
So thanks for the awesome sauce, video!
hahahahah i just got through listening to yalls old pod cast with nick ferry and jay. and all i could think of while watching this was.... 'If Nick could see her now." love it chica!!! very creative and resourceful. just like you've always been. keep up the good work!!!
Nice job, as always. Great idea. Now you need a sliding library ladder to reach it all.
That would be a fun build! : ) But I think a step stool is much better so it can be moved out of the way completely when not in use.
@@AprilWilkerson make it a folding one. An idea i have for it is having rotating boards as steps and then you can lift t hth e outside, and boom, folded ladder
Just watched this and it has inspired me to be creative in my hobby room storage. Thank you.
Great build. I have a lot of mini totes myself. So it's off to my shop I go. Thanks for the inspiration .👍🇨🇦
Nice! Let’s hope that plastic storage container dims don’t get discontinued! You should build some custom platform shoes so you can reach up higher!
What a fantastic use of dead space. I love that fact that its doesn't take away from the floor space. Great project, April! I will have to do this to my work space aka garage.
Great space saving design! Good use of preexisting materials and smart thinking using the box fronts as labels. Innovation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dollar Tree sells some great metal square and rectangle baking pans you can use for containers, very heavy duty.
April veramente un ottimo progetto sei brava in tutto te lo dice uno che è 30 anni che fa il fai da te complimenti APRIL CIAO
Greetings to you and yours, April. Congratulations for your excellent work.
Awesome and well thought out storage idea, basically no loss of usable space for traditional drawers and/or shelves. Thank you
Hey girl, you inspire so many young women and men as well, thank you!!

Thats a brilliant idea, very good use of space.
Haha. 👍👍
I love this space solution, thanks a lot for the tips on how to build it.
Thank you for putting this up, April. When it comes to making things you are the big baddy of badasses.
love it enough storage to last years of growth and projects and a good excuse to buy all the new fittings that come out.
Always love seeing some good ol organization
Nice simple solution. Good idea to use those plastic containers much better than building all the boxes. Think it's to tall though you are going to end up hoarding stuff that you only are ever going to use once a year if that in those upper containers.
Nice idea April. Did you think about making the storage drawers accessible from the metal shop side too? That would be cool to access from both sides.
She used the ply wood from the metal shop side for the center supports, so that wouldn't work, good thought though
No, I have things hung up on the wall on the other side. Plus, the plywood acts as a stop for the containers.
Love the wire straddling, I've done that myself with wires before and it's oddly satisfying to perfectly enclose them. =)
This is a very clever way to store and organize small items April! Very Cool!
Love your storage project I recently built a wall unit with many shelves using dadoes. I cut mine with a router with a three-quarter inch straight bit. I have access to a CNC and next time I would cut the entire sheet with dadoes then cut my stanchions from that, live and learn I guess.
You are a real woodworker like a beaver. Good job.
Genious. I'm inspired to do the same in my shop. Thanks for the great idea. Take care.
Fantastic definitely going to do this in my new shop.
Thanks April, you rock
I have just joined a men's shed and it is soooo untidy I am gonna take you idea and utilise it there I think.... Keep up the great work
April, good afternoon!
I really liked your idea!
I'll make one here when I can!
Congratulations on the project!
Flip-Flop April
This is time and labor intensive way, not mention the dust with making dado !! Specially if you are going to make quite few of them . You could use 1/4 inch 4x8 Plywood as base or any thickness you want, sticking 1/2 inch stripped spacer the width you like then cut the final 4x8 to the final depth of the shelf you want .
Great organization set-up April! Awesome job! 👍
this is a great idea I did something the same but used 1*2.5 slats LOL it works great when putting shelves in place
April love ❤️ you’re channel keep up the great work👍👍🤙🏼😍
: ) Thank you
Given the height of those boxes, I think a cool project would be one of those sliding ladders on a railing. Cool metal work and woodworking combo! Great vid as always!
Might never happen per her response to Frank Heuber's comment as she is sticking to the step ladder she has.
Very inspirational. I’ll probably do something similar but with more variations in the box sizes. Also might use a router instead of table saw.
Your labeling system is the same way I do it with the kids cereal. Makes things easier and changeable
