As someone who played too much BDO back when it launched, and who was only barely aware of the existence of a battle royale spinoff (that I had long forgotten), I was only half paying attention to the visuals while listening and had no clue what to expect until you loaded in, at which point I INSTANTLY recognized not only what you were playing but also EXACTLY where they put you in the game world. So many memories from that little arena next to Heidel, man.
I never played the stand alone Shadow Arena client, but I played it extensively when it was still integrated into Black Desert Online. The month Shadow Arena first launched as a Red Battlefield alternative in Black Desert Online was one of the most hype MMO events I've ever experienced, and I've been daily MMO grinding since 1999 in UO. It was insanely populated, matches filled instantly, and it gave obscene amounts of loot. It was an excellent game mode to be inside a fully fledged MMORPG, this was meant to be more like WoW EBGs than a stand alone game. They ultimately decided to split the game mode off to a separate client for some logistical reason or another, and by that time I had been on break from BDO for some time and haven't picked it up seriously again enough to install their separate PVP arena client.
I was so disappointed trying it last week only to discover it isn't actually the same combat as BDO. I ADORE the tamer combat system, so seeing Heilang as a heal-dog broke my heart. Every time I pick BDO back up, however, I get reminded that I'm stuck grinding for a million mobs and just drop it again.
I have played BDO for a short time, but I've never heard of Shadow Arena. But a lot of the landscapes in the video reminded me of Black Desert and near the end it was clearly the path leading to the starting village. I'm surprised I still had such a clear picture of it in my mind, because I didn't play the game very long and haven't touched it in years.
As noted, this is the offshoot of BDO. And yes, Guardians in BDO (Igrid) are fun as hell to run! Even the starter chains (with the Stone Cold Stunner setup gut kick) are cool looking.
Igrid *IS* BDO's Guardian class, and they're basically a hyper-aggressive, hard hitting tank, basically think of them as what FFXIV's Warrior class would be like if it had the same combat as BDO. Also, you'll mock Alan as a name for a sorcerer, but not Dumbledore? I know he's a well known fictional wizard, but that name is just goofy sounding.
My first thought was 'this literally looks like Pearl Abyss took the BDO engine and reskinned it into a battle royale game' which, honestly, doesn't sound too bad on the surface... but I'm sure there's some awful p2w mechanics in there somewhere
Honestly, the devs should use Shadow Arena as a test bed for their projects, then spin the most successful sub-systems off into their own games. The giant bird-golem and stompy-golem? Could build a great game out of just piloting magical golem-mechs around and kicking the mana out of each other.
Ahh yes the bastard child of Black Desert Online which the devs had to off-shoot into it's own game because they couldn't stop cheaters from flooding the BDO economy with Shadow Arena winnings.
I was watching this thinking...man this game looks really familiar....then after about 5 minutes i realised a lot of the assets in this game are from Black Desert Online....I imagine (after i realised that it was the same Devs/Publisher for BDO that made this) this was supposed to be a Battle Royale Game mode for BDO that they sliced off and just turned into its own game
It was originally being toted as a MMO but then Pearl Abyss backtracked quite quickly on this but didn't do it overtly and did so like changing game tags on Steam. Their articles started rewording it as "mmo-like combat"...
So to give you some context on this dumpster fire of a game. Shadow Arena was a battle royal mode that was apart of a larger game called Black Desert Online. Players loved this mode as it was considered the best pvp experience in the game. It was some of the only enjoyable group pvp and considered the most balanced. It was removed because Pearl Abyss could not figure out how to stop hackers from taking advantage of it. They removed it [much to the lament of the player base] and remade as a stand alone for console and pc. Combat was changed drastically and skills trimmed down. The original combat, at least according to it's players and myself is the best combat system in the mmo scene. It plays more like tekken with a bit of street fighter mixed in. No one that plays Black Desert Online actually likes the new version and PA has, for several months been trying to get streamers to play it, most of the time they are playing against bots it's so empty. The lore seems so bad because it's twice removed from the source. Since they did shadow arena as a stand alone, the lore itself has been rewritten twice in Serendia and Mediah and a new antagonist has been introduced. It also seems like bullshit because allot of the back story behind these characters are missing. These characters are actually very important to the story in Black Desert Online. Orwen is a half elf who's father was one of the first wizards [Wizards are basically. . space magicians. They come from other dimensions.] He was also the creature of Caphra Stones which is a powerful source of power in the game. He's also an evil bastard and fled to the land of the Ahib which are basically this game's dark elves. The reason why Orwen grew up alone is because half elves are shunned by elves. Elves worship a goddess known as Kamasylvia which is a giant tree. Kamasylvia is dying and so Orwen was meant to be sacrificed to the great tree to give it life. Now why this matters is because Shadow Arena is actually a place in the lore of BDO. Shadow Arena is where captured souls go to prove their worth. The reason Shadow Arena exists is because the Ahib have been fighting a great evil in their land, an evil that resides beneath the Kamasylvia Tree. Turns out the Kamasylvian tree is a beacon for Heedun, basically a space wizard that has conquered multiple dimensions. The ahib believe the best way to defend against this threat is to enslave souls, send them to the shadow arena and the winners go on to Heedun's realm to fight against that great threat. They explain none of that in the stand alone because they expect you to be a fan of BDO.
I play Black Desert Online currently. There have been a lot of major changes. If the comments on this video convinced you stay away from the actual mmo version, take another fresh look.
Yeah lol the reason the description is like that is because it was a mode in Black Desert Online that was popular enough to get its own game. Lol. So the description basically is designed with those people in mind. Dumb, but that's how it is.
I can’t help but think Josh is being highly sarcastic, playing this while “pretending” to be completely unaware that this is Black Desert Battle Royale
Coldmirror sums this video up perfectly in "Harry Potter und der Plastikpokal" "Ey soll ich euch mal was sagen? Diese Marshmallows schmecken sau nich wie pommes!" "Let me tell you something. These marshmallows taste extremely not like fries!"
so my first exact impression when you got into the tutorial was "this looks alot like black desert, wait hold on i swear ive seen this spot IN black desert" and that is kinda what i took away from this, BDO but battle royale
Guess you never played Black Desert Online, which this game is Battle Royale mode of. BDO is an actual MMORPG, and arguably a really good one with quite possible the best combat in any MMORPG. But you gotta keep in mind that it is a Korean game so there is a lot of grinding involved, but then again every MMORPG has some sort of a grind. As someone who has been playing BDO for years i recommend it, just gotta keep in mind that the game has a potential pitfall of spending a lot of money on its cash shop if you are not patient, but if you are you can earn everything in the game by just playing
In all honesty. I just had to say that even tho you wrote this a year ago. I actually don't mind grinding at all. Idk if it's just me or if everyone else is just lying to themselves. Like I play genshin rn. And I actually pull charakters (f2p) cause after grinding to level them up you factually want something new to level up and make stronger🤣. What people need to get is that no game on earth would survive with a solid playerbase for years without some kind of grind. No story on EARTH could get you so much into something that you play it on a daylie for multiple years. It's hard to accept yourself in a negative way. But that's only because grinding is viewed as a negative thing. In rrality it really isn't tho. It keeps most mmos alive actually. I also hate when people say "they only want your money" in gotchas or mmos. F yeah obviously. But then again I wouldn't even mind spending 50$ a year. Cause at the end of the day if I have 100 times the amount of time in a "free" game then I have in for example a horizon zero dawn or god of war or any other 60$ original price game. Then at some point it's actually not a respect thing but definetly not a kill to put 50$ a year in. I know people spend way more. But if you look at the cost of cinema tickets or tripple A games with campaign that has like 30 hours of playing time. Then all of a sudden you really shouldn't feel tricked if you put 50$ a year into something that entertains you for 1 or 2 hours a day for a whole year if that makes sense. And this is nothing against tripple A games obviously. People play games to calm down. That's why everyone is saying that they hate grinding. But they don't actually do. Cause sometimed it's just more relaxing listening to a youtube video and grind stuff then actually following a story if that makes sense. Of course sometimes you want to be entertained in a better way by what you play. But if you talk completly calming down. Then grinding isn't as bad as it's rep is if that makes sense.. So the people that ask "you did put 10$ into a free to play game, are you dumb?". They are actually not truly thinkin logically. Cause the honest answer should be. "Yeah it's free to play but I played it for 400+ hours this year...they updated it several times this year with completly new regions and minigames for absolutely free (genshins new locations for example have nothing to do with gotcha system, new story part new region for free again and again and again) updates ubisoft would take 15$ for per update. what are 10$ for that?"
Tags on Steam are user-generated, not developer-generated. As an example, Atelier Ryza 2 has the "Hentai" tag, yet I highly doubt either Gust or TecmoKoei would've put that tag there, as there is nothing that remotely justify that tag in that game. The newest Bubsy game, Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back also has the "Psychological Horror" tag, and the only horror-adjacent thing that game has is how bad it is.
I try to, but most of my time is taken up with making these videos. I do have old school runescape running often doing something less click intensive though.

Hey, can I recommend to you an MMO that I loved since I was a teenager? It's called Vindictus, a south Korean-based MMO with a pretty decent story that I enjoyed. I'll admit that admittedly does have some of the things I know you'll hate (mostly the enhancement system at +8 levels) and the "classes" are character-based and sorta gender-locked, but I think it has a really good fighting system. It's not open world, but it uses instance-based maps for missions and bosses. And I'd be happy to play it with you and help, but the early missions are fairly easy. I soloed the game up until Lv70-something so I doubt you'd need the help, but I just think you might like it.
I wouldn't call Vindictus an MMO. It's an instanced dungeon crawler. And it could be fun if it wasn't so horribly optimzied it lags even on a decent PC from today...
The animation looks actually pretty nice! Good mix between weighty movement while still being decently quick. Good sound design too. All in all, that‘s actually pretty good craftmanship.
This is the first time I've seen Black Desert combat without lag, especially in PvP. Wish I lived in Europe. A single server in that country is FAR better than in the United States, where most are on the west coast and screw over half the entire continent. There's almost no ping difference between a west coast US server and an EU server from where I am; that's how bad it is.

So this is what Pearl Abyss has been up to instead of fixing Black Desert.. I'm sure he knows by now, but this game is basically an asset grab from BDO with a few tweeks. It's quite fun, but the enchanting and gearing system rely too heavily on rng and is about as fun as chewing glass. Also, Guardian (Igrid) is monstrous and i love playing that class!
I was wondering why Igrid is so familiar despite having never played the game, and turns out its by Pearl Abyss and I her costume is the default preview when making a Guardian in BDO's character creator

Josh, the combat system and progression in this game are a gimped version of the ACTUAL MMORPG BDO / Black Desert Online, you should check the actual mmo out sometime. love yur reviews lol, all battle royales are just cash grabs sadly. The black spirit can bring people back to life, hence him being undead, and the bird boss you see is from the actual MMO, also each character / hero is a modified version of each class from the MMO. IMO p2w/cashgrab attempt battle royales are bad, but bdo, the actual mmo, is pretty solid. Igrid is a guardian, and that swamp area you were f ighting in is called "Fogan marsh". In bdo the same Cc / combo system exists but CC is more rare / less frequent as you have to properly time it or use it to cc and kill enemies on a limited cooldown.
They ultimately decided to split the game mode off to a separate client for some logistical reason or another, and by that time I had been on break from BDO for some time and haven't picked it up seriously again enough to install their separate PVP arena client.
has he not played or heard of black desert?
This was great when it was just an event in BDO, it doesn't really hold up so well as a standalone game.
As noted, this is the offshoot of BDO. And yes, Guardians in BDO (Igrid) are fun as hell to run! Even the starter chains (with the Stone Cold Stunner setup gut kick) are cool looking.
Imagine my confusion when I accidentally glanced at my second monitor and seen Josh playing Black Desert... While it also wasn't Black Desert
Bdo is not pay to win at all anymore lol. Making 400m an hour hunting with the p2w tent and all free pets
I dobt think people really know what pay to win means anymore
Thank you for being honest the showcase of this game showed me even though it isn't a mmo it's what I wanted. I've been playing it since I watched. Ty
go look up black desert online please
"If this combat system was in a fully fledged mmo I'd have no complaints"
WHY DONT YOU KNOW WHAT BLACK DESERT IS
Watching someone review this game, compare it to others, and not mention black desert is really disconcerting
Not a proper youtuber after all
He always talks about how he plays all the MMOs..... but yet has no idea of Black Desert.
@@zBones762 he only says he played the best MMOs, not all of them
@@zBones762 But he does know. He added it to his top MMO list video he released like 2 months before this. lol.
He could of treated this as a stand alone game, which is what it is, doesn't need to mention BDO
I Nailed the final score at the Character backgrounds :D
Igrid was obviously going to be the best, we know asian characters are usually ranked by bust size.
Honestly, the devs should use Shadow Arena as a test bed for their projects, then spin the most successful sub-systems off into their own games. The giant bird-golem and stompy-golem? Could build a great game out of just piloting magical golem-mechs around and kicking the mana out of each other.
Does he know that this game comes from an actual mmorpg called Black Desert Online?
BDOBR
XD
he's pretty bad with google, and everything else he does, mostly.

@@JoshStrifeHayes With a delay of about 4 weeks.
@@trocer2235 sorry, i was busy
The fact you never talked about the fact that Shadow Arena is just a PvP only version of Black Desert Only triggered me so much xD
Ahh yes the bastard child of Black Desert Online which the devs had to off-shoot into it's own game because they couldn't stop cheaters from flooding the BDO economy with Shadow Arena winnings.
Me clicking on this: "Shadow arena isn't an mmo, is it?"
Josh Hayes: "Shadow arena is not an mmo."

Black Desert Online is the full mmo. This is a battle royal spin-off using the same engine.
That explains this game being oddly good ^^
I was watching this thinking...man this game looks really familiar....then after about 5 minutes i realised a lot of the assets in this game are from Black Desert Online....I imagine (after i realised that it was the same Devs/Publisher for BDO that made this) this was supposed to be a Battle Royale Game mode for BDO that they sliced off and just turned into its own game
This combat system is in BDO, as others have mentioned... I wouldn't necessarily call it a "fully fledged MMO" though.
Yeah lol the reason the description is like that is because it was a mode in Black Desert Online that was popular enough to get its own game. Lol. So the description basically is designed with those people in mind. Dumb, but that's how it is.
It's hilarious watching everyone mald out about this being from BDO. Amazing trolling in the review sidestepping any possible reference to BDO
"Both aroused and terrified" that is peak sexy woman warrior design, then ?
I can’t help but think Josh is being highly sarcastic, playing this while “pretending” to be completely unaware that this is Black Desert Battle Royale
Coldmirror sums this video up perfectly in "Harry Potter und der Plastikpokal"
"Ey soll ich euch mal was sagen? Diese Marshmallows schmecken sau nich wie pommes!"
"Let me tell you something. These marshmallows taste extremely not like fries!"
Its official, Igrid is the waifu of this chanel. Long live Igrid!
When he said "I am both aroused and terrified..." I just laughed so hard I spilled my coffee.
scaroused
Josh went from calling her "Giant boob lady" to "Ma'am" and I love that
so my first exact impression when you got into the tutorial was "this looks alot like black desert, wait hold on i swear ive seen this spot IN black desert"
and that is kinda what i took away from this, BDO but battle royale
It is BDO. All the characters are somewhat important NPCs of the game.
from what i read in these comments: this was briefly in bdo but they desided to make it into own game because cheaters brought wins to actual bdo.
"it basically is just flashier anime dark souls" sir, that is called Code Vein
I feel like the opportunity was missed to name this "Fort-Knight"
11:28 "You lot probably think that's a picture of my family on my desk. WRONG! It's a picture of the A-Team!"
Would love to play a console version... BDO is on consoles, so this could work!
"I am both aroused and terrified" ~ never truer words spoken.
Looks like Pearl Abyss is making a fun BR game! They should knock RPG off that description though.
"I am both aroused and terrified." Hahahaha damn it's 4am and I chortled. XDDD
Just wondering, do you still actually play mmo's consistently off-camera?
Brilliant video btw, as always!
I try to, but most of my time is taken up with making these videos. I do have old school runescape running often doing something less click intensive though.
I'm sure you've realized by now, but user-defined tags on Steam are user-defined haha... Love the videos regardless!
Honestly if you invested your skill points you wouldve shredded them even faster. Ingrid is insane.
I just hope josh does a BDO review. It's tad impossible that he wouldn't know about BDO nowadays specially after that LoML ad push and content creators pushing it as well.
All in all, that‘s actually pretty good craftmanship.
omg this is so hard to watch, he did not know about Black Desert and the things he said... xDD nice video
I'm gonna try this! Thank you very much for the vid!
I play black desert and also live in America it runs completely find for me maybe your WIFI isn't good
@@kareemwilliams3204 ..you know America is a gigantic country, right? You know latency HEAVILY varies on the location of your residence, right?
I don't understand why people respond to things they're uneducated in.
I saw an ad for this game once, and did not realize until now that it is a different game and not Raid: Shadow Legends.
So Pearl Abyss just copy-pasted their Black Desert project folder and turned it into a Battle Royale huh
Practically yes.
Originally Shadow Arena was a game mode inside BDO, was pretty fun and rewarding, allowed people to finally do PVP stuff and be rewarded for it
But then they decided to make it a standalone
You know I sorta Want him to Review BDO... The Summer Seasonal Server is coming up which is the perfect time to actually review the game since it makes the Grind so much more easier.
Is. Is Igrid/10 a High mark? That sounds like a really high score in your system
I'm pretty sure it is. Hell, it got my blood pumping just watching him absolutely body everything around him
the early game reminds me a lot of DotA. several different characters, jungle where you kill neutral creeps, all that.
Was there any moment while playing this that it rang any bells or did it being a spin off from BDO just not come to you?
Nice, your subs are going up finally! Well deserved.
If you use hashtags in your script it will help with views, and you are using too many tags. Tags are mostly just used for spelling errors and not to tag the content of the video.
You're an amazing writer. This was so fun to watch.
Why does this look just like black desert?? Wait... This is exactly like black desert... Wow... They even have the characters from the game and that is Wuju from the Abyss One Magnus questline in the tutorial and the black spirit escape ability. This is black desert arena...

Yes and? Far more respectable chap than Tim the Enchanter.
At least Tim know what the burrows hide
So this is what Pearl Abyss has been up to instead of fixing Black Desert.. I'm sure he knows by now, but this game is basically an asset grab from BDO with a few tweeks. It's quite fun, but the enchanting and gearing system rely too heavily on rng and is about as fun as chewing glass.
Also, Guardian (Igrid) is monstrous and i love playing that class!
Alan is actually the name of an amazingly terrifying Druid in the Shannara series.
I was wondering why Igrid is so familiar despite having never played the game, and turns out its by Pearl Abyss and I her costume is the default preview when making a Guardian in BDO's character creator
~10:00 YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAH YES YESYESYESYESYES!!!!! THIS!! I need a new keyboard and mouse and monitor as I broke them clicking hard like on that.

ooooooooh wait for that camera bug!!!!! you are gonna love it
Josh, the combat system and progression in this game are a gimped version of the ACTUAL MMORPG BDO / Black Desert Online, you should check the actual mmo out sometime. love yur reviews lol, all battle royales are just cash grabs sadly. Ninja and guardian and wizard are very strong pvp classes in the normal mmo.
"I am both aroused and terrified" best line so far :)
