I went to a rock/pinnacle off shore there with my little 9' Zodiac back in I think it was 1974. Place looked like it would be awesome from far away in the Zodiac. Got spooled on big spinning reels on the first pass then line broke on the knot!! I knew was big uluas! So.I went close and threw my anchor right off the rock and on my first drop, it was around 40' all around the rock that came up to just under the surface, when I settled on the bottom, the sound of the anchor hitting the bottom had attracted huge uku"s and I remember looking at what were as big as good size ono just coming straight in to me!!! These uku were 40 pounds, just huge ones!!!! I shot two and I weighed one later when we got back in that day and it was 44 pounds!!!! There were all kinds of papio and ulua of so many different species swimming around this rock, It was just insane!! In the winter when the really big kumu come in to shallower water, i saw one in a cave that was ridiculously massive!! Had just my 3 prong and never had a shot though! Twin 70- 80 lb uluas swimming right by at 5 ft!!! This was long before there were any long blade European style fins, and before when I just dove with no wetsuit or weight belt and little Churchill fins!! Loll!!! Yeah huge uku!!! A ledge outside was a drop off to 80 ft and a scuba dive charter boat guy told me about it!! There were so much fish back then! Over the years, in the 70's I never did a dive without seeing a 100 lb ulua on the island! Seriously!!!! It was so insane back.then!!! Used to fish niihau and the rock, and dove there too back then. I was commercial fishing and I did long bottom fishing trips in the leeward isles all the way up to midway!!!! This was before it became a marine sanctuary! Lived over there for six years and just was so blessed especially surfing!!! It was so uncrowded over there then!!!! I grew up born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu surfing and fishing and diving etc, so over there was paradise! Heaven on earth!! then I ended up moving to the big island in kona and made my dream reality and had the 9th Force 30 out of the mold custom built for commercial fishing to my specs! Flybridge diesel engine with straight shaft and rudder set up and I fished out of Honokohau harbor in kona but I always went on 4-5 day trips fishing the most remote inaccessible areas of the Big island before returning!!!! Did that for 25 years! Found wild prehistoric fishing area's and diving spots from.my boat and just am truly blessed!!!!! No ka oi!!! Enjoy brah!!!! It's just an amazing life!! Aloha D.L.
just so everyone knows i did not make any comment about this. im down for shooting big fish. i have a big hawaiian family here and we dive all the time. I'm not sure who keeps making comments under my name. but it is happening.
