it's amazing how before a shark will get spun up and completely out of control it will be very cautious. every time you made a move to shoot the shark backed off. they know our intentions but sometimes they don't care.
I agree and have been preaching a controlled aggressive reaction to them for years. When you stick a 6' long speargun out at them, I know they perceive it as a weapon/threat. Like you said, sometimes they don't care and will attack but often they will break off and depart.
Been there many times. If it´s just one, short of shooting, is scare him away. A diver is a big fish in the water. They respect. If there are several, things can get out of hand. the boldest one will take a bite at your fish and hell breaks loose. If you pop one before it gets crazzy, the usualy stray away
Hey Jason, big Hammers used to be common in our waters as well but it's rare to see one anymore. I've got a good buddy who commercial Lobster dives off the East Coast, lotta work but he loves it and makes good coin at it. Best to you, Dan
Will they ever attack you as a diver for no reason? Even if you have no fish? I’m a new diver and yesterday I dove in Jacksonville for my very first time in the ocean and I wasn’t even in the water for five minutes and I had four bull sharks bigger than me underneath me that kept coming up to me at the surface. My very first time in the ocean. Will I be all right if I just ignore them but watch them or do I need to arm myself? I’m speaking just as a diver not having fish on me. I heard some people never even seen sharks and my very first time they were checking me out. So now I’m researching sharks.
T50, Only as a last option. And even then I usually just try to hit above the spine and below the Dorsal. Drives them off with a minor wound that they'll recover from. Best, Dan
MR, I hadn't either until 10-12 years ago and now they've exploded in population around here. In the warmer months they're on pretty much every spot out here, really makes the skinny water a lot more challenging! Glad you don't have them ! Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 the ones y'all have in the gulf seem so much more aggressive than the ones here on the east coast. I dove outta Destin the last two years for snapper season.. they'd gang up on me and try to run me outta the water. Had a monster 9-10 footer come under my right arm pit and attack my stringer while I was stringing a snapper. That stuff never happens where I dive (St. Augustine to South Carolina).
I'll def take your word for that as I have little East Coast experience! The problem in the Eastern GOM is the sheer increase in the numbers of Bulls. Almost no commercial or recreational pressure, warming waters are just a few of the factors. All adds up to a lot more bulls.
The increase in South Eastern Fl & the Keys has been like an explosion over the last decade... We went from seeing one once in a blue moon to basically showing up to the dinner bell after a few shots... Predator protection...

J R oh I know. These guys are probably the farthest you can get from being kooks. They shoot a lot of fish, but a very small percentage of divers ever make it to those depths. I wish they could vacuum up all those lionfish but they don’t have enough time
Love your work bro. Why don't you shoot the sharks to chase them away? I always shoot sharks cause I believe it tells them that every time they see a human in the ocean, they should always be scared and must always leave the perimeter where humans hunt? I know it sounds mean and cruel but my family's lives and our lives are more important than sharks which we do eat for food. Where I am from, there are just too many sharks and spearpeople are so scared of them. I have been educating them with my scenario of chasing sharks away by using this method. My apologies bro but I don't want to sound Negative on your beautiful work as a spearo, just sharing ideas. Love your work
Hey AP, I appreciate your words, totally understand where you're coming from. I try not to have to violently engage sharks. Usually a yell or a jab to the face with the spear point will work. Sometimes though, you run into one who just has bad intentions. When it reaches the point where I feel endangered, than I have no issue with taking one out. Yes he finally disappeared. I use Russian 7.62-54R rounds exclusively.
