She didn't know, deeply, what she was singing and not even years later she knows even after the authors had been asked. And it is that she and those who carry her had in mind a socio-political agenda that I swear they had to shoehorn in as a message in the film. Fortunately, the final result was more balanced because each one, the public gave it their own meaning, not that of an agenda.

I wish this didn’t cut off at this point. I think one thing that Chris Wallace is missing is that this is the midpoint of her journey. She is embracing her power, but she still hasn’t let go of trying to protect people from it. She is just realizing that she can use it for herself. She is letting go of the pretense of who she is. It is not until later that she lets go of the fear around it. She is no longer fearing expressing her power, but she is fearing sharing it.
He totally missed the point and even made her question herself. It's literally about letting go of your fears and being your true self. In a world where women are directly or indirectly told to "sit still and look pretty", this is telling little girls to be brave and facs their fears. I think most people can easily relate to that. It really shows that although older this men never felt such fear. Must be nice to be him. Unfortunately as someone who suffered from severe social anxiety and barely left the house I understood Elsa in a deep level when this movie came out. I went to therapy, slowly but surely let go of most of my fears associated with interacting with people.

4:22 The character wants to be free to express herself, chooses her own path for herself by stepping away from the kingdom she was raised to rule and the way she was raised to act, and does whatever she wants for the first time in her life. It's really simple storytelling, Wallace. It's literally written to be so simple that a three year old could understand it. She's letting go of the societal expectations that she has been burdened with and allowing her true self to shine through (represented by the ice she's repressed.) She's not "giving into her curse," as you put it, she's choosing to embrace her gifts that she was told to hide away inside of herself for the benefit of the kingdom and the royal family.

They say men have privileges they don’t. True! And women have privileges men don’t. There is some disparity in life, but there is nothing limiting women from success today. Women are more likely to go to further education and have a higher graduation rate. They’re worked into every line of employment these days (minus dirty jobs, which are almost entirely populated by men). Where you work and what level you work determines your income. In the workforce, men are “paid more” because there are more men than women in higher earning brackets. This has continued to change with time though. People fail to recognize that and it creates an argument about the man and how it isn’t my fault I’m unsuccessful, it’s the system! It’s not. And that’s a great thing to hear. It’s all up to you! Gotta make your time worth it.
I think people commonly misunderstand what let it go is truly about, So let me explain it. She’s talking about letting go of what makes her unique and special, and really embracing who she is, and being her true self. It’s not a curse, it’s a blessing. And I don’t feel like she’s “locking herself in a ice castle” she’s thinking if nobody is going to expect me for me, then I’ll run into the mountains and be alone and free. The loneliness is the price she’s willing to pay to be free. Also idina is the absolute purest soul ever!!!

Exactly! It's not a curse. It's who she is. There's even a pointed bit of dialogue in the beginning with the trolls, "Born with the power or cursed?" and her dad answers, "born with it." That wa sintentional and beautful. Some people just don't want to see the depth in the story/character because it's animated and their granddaughter sang the song too many times.

He doesn't get it because he's probably never had to deal with the judgmental press of opinions that women have to deal with constantly. How we dress, how we act, makeup, no makeup, shave your legs or don't, everyone from family to total strangers is always willing to pass judgment on us and many of us think locking ourselves into an ice castle would be way better than walking down a street in public being shamed by random passersby.

The feeling i get when elsa locks herself in her own ice palace is partly her creating a safe space to be herself, which she never truly felt she had. It was her way of exploring a new side of herself, ultimately leading to better, well-rounded character growth and self awareness 😊❄️ wonderful interview

I think one part everyone is missing is that Let it Go isn’t purely a positive empowerment song everyone would like to think it is, but shes also running away from her problems at home - her people, her sister, her duties as queen. That’s why it catches up with her later, when she realises she’s unable to truly escape herself in First Time in Forever reprise (let the storm rage on -> no escape from the storm inside of me), causing her to spiral and shoot Anna in the chest and push her away. She continues to spiral after that, pacing the castle and causing the ice to change color to red, the exact color of fear shown in the troll’s prophecy.
It's one thing to connect emotionally with adults, but when you can connect with children you have done something truly magical.

I would say she doesnt "lock herself away in her ice palace" but she escapes a society where she was literally locked away to hide herself, and now she's free and she's creating her own world where she doesn't have to hide anymore
She locks herself up because she is afraid. She's so filled with the fear of hurting people that she feels that the only solution is to live alone. She realizes that her curse can actually be beautiful when she creates her amazing ice palace. In the end, she learns that the opposite of fear is love and she can do wonderful things without hurting anyone when she expresses her love instead of her fear.
I think it's about being true to yourself and not letting people and things compromise your dignity. Haven't seen the movie, never heard the song.
She almost had it figured out by isolating in a castle- but that was avoiding not confronting your problem. Her sister was able to tell her the fault in her solution.
I actually think it's great the writers didn't know yet if she would be good or bad - nor did we really yet at that point! But now when we hear that song, we see the whole picture. We see her character development in full and know how pivotal that "Let it Go" moment was for Elsa. She was finally facing her inner turmoil in that song, deciding to stop keeping up this unsustainable "perfect girl" facade that was eating her away inwardly. For that reason, and where it drives her (paired with the unconditional love of Anna) as the film progresses, "Let it Go" is empowering.
Love it, even the awkwardness this is wholesome and needs to be talked about as it was! Communication is honesty!!

I'm surprised at all the trolling in the comments. As a 1st grade teacher in Asia, Let It Go was a gift. One of the other teachers taught his class the words and meaning of the song. This inspired one of my students to ask me to teach them the song. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A child asks to be taught something! I'm not sure why little girls had to watch the movie 50 times, but in my class it only gets played in January - saved my sanity. 🤣

She had been locked in a room because she was afraid to hurt anyone. She got away from anyone she could hurt and created the dwelling that expressed how she felt and who she was. She had been holding back in fear.
She was still worried about hurting people but if she was going to have to isolate herself she might as well do it in a way she could be comfortable with.
She went from playing a supporting antagonist on Enchanted to being the voice of a Queen on another Disney film and becoming a household name wow!

Really? I’ve always found it shrill. It was perfect for Wicked, but an odd choice for Elsa. And then the end when she holds that long note, Omg it was like a scream. I think the music saves that song. The PERFECT Broadway voice for me is Lea Solanga (Jasmine’s singing voice in Aladdin)
I think Defying Gravity is her biggest hit. Let It Go just boosted that.

Let It Go is an empowering song, but it also isn't the end of the story, Elsa eventually realizes love and human connection is more important than her fears, but Let It Go was a big moment in allowing her to not give into fear, and embracing her power, before she was locked away in the castle in her room, but also locking away her power. Let It Go lets her see her true abilities, she's capable of so much. The only problem is she left one isolation for another, hence why she has to also learn from Anna later in the story

This is classic masculine versus feminine. Women have to let their natural power shine through.
To me it's about 4 things you pass through in life as you grow psychologically: open up/engage, experience, accept and letting go. I think Elsa as a kid opened up to her sister, had a hard experience. At some point she had enough, was stuck, then she accepted her situation and let it go. If you get stuck at any of the four phases you stop growing. By realising things, having the courage, the anger to break through barriers you can go through to the next phase and let it go and be open for a new experience and the cycle continues. Yes, this goes sometimes with some fireworks, some people around you may get hurt, but it's for each a normal process.
I remember when that first came out every little kid in my neighborhood was singing that song over and over I got to admit it is very catchy🤔

Elsa locks her self in a castle far away so that she doesnt hurt the people that she loves. It's the only way she thinks that she can embrace her powers and at the same time protect the ones she loves. The point of the story however is that with LOVE she is able to harness her powers for good. Elsa is not a villian. She is a protagonist that overcomes fear with love.
Well I guess while recording let it go, Idina wanted the music producers to "let some things go". Love Idina she has the voice of an Angel. Let it go is a masterpiece in its own right.

The song is LITERALLY CALLED LET IT GO what the hell didn't he understood about it?
Wallace...locking herself in an ice castle is good for her, because there she is free and she wont hurt anyone. It may not work for everyone but in her case she is afraid. This fear was put into her by the Troll and her parents that separated her from her only sister and tried to make her control her gift instead of loving her for who she is, cause her parents were afraid too. Isolation was "her" solution after years of suppression.
However I do get what you are saying, I too found that (although the movie is good) both were isolated from each other and the world around them.... Like why wasnt Anna allowed to have friends and play outside the castle? That part never made sense to me tbh, so I find it interesting that you question why is her being isolated in a castle good, but not question why were they both isolated from the world when only one had powers.

This guy.... Did he watch the movie? The song was about freeing herself, not just from her own insecurities, but of the fear of what other people would think of her. She does give into the power, but she also accepts the idea that to have her freedom, she's going to have to be alone. There is power and courage in that. Of knowing what you need from yourself and others. She needed to let go of her fears/insecurities, and she needed to be alone.

Her Parents were told to teach her how to use her powers, but they shut her away and told her suppress her gift. After they died, She kept Herself locked away, still afraid.
She runs away from her people in fear and builds literal walls of ice to lock herself away. This is not freedom... To be empowered, she would need to accept and embrace her gifts, face her people, work with her sister to Be Herself, and be with her people.
It is Anna that shows her that Love is stronger than fear... and Elsa didn't need to lock her self away all those years... ❤❤❤
Interesting interview. When reading the entire lyrics I understand "let it go" and as a more positive approach to getting on with one's life and keeping one's humanity than the other options noted in the song that are locking others out and not caring; both of which are negative approaches. Sorry I haven't seen the film but it may add more context.

It’s about accepting yourself and being who you truly are but not risking people’s lives in the process. She wants to finally be her true self but her parents judgment over her magical powers being dangerous is still ingrained in her. So she wants to be alone, if that means she’s free. “Yes, I’m alone but I’m alone and free”. It’s not a curse by the way, it’s a wonderful magical gift. Elsa was trying to save Anna from falling, Anna got hurt because she didn’t listen to Elsa when she told her to slow down, so it was Anna’s fault, not Elsa’s. Anna is the one who wanted to play with snow and ice, and she’s the one who acted recklessly. It’s like a regular sibling who throws a pillow to try to help their falling sibling but end up hitting them in the face with it resulting in them not being able to see and ultimately hit their head against something. The interviewer is just stupid plain and simple.😅
Why is he grilling her like that on the plot? She didn’t write the dang script. She’s an actress and singer.
Watched it with my kids when it came out, and it was the 1st time since lion king that I felt the emotion of the character so well, I loved it! She locks herself up, at the beginning of her empowerment and new life with freedom, because it took her time to become completely free and comfortable in the open... 🙄😉😃✌
Both of their interpretations are correct. She ran away so she is free to be herself without endangering or being judged by others, which is important sometimes. But eventually, she has to come back and take responsibility in society in order to be a truly “good” character, essentially to grow up and deal with reality. If she just stayed a hermit in her castle who fights people away and never compromises with others, she could have easily become the villain character. The story could have gone either direction from that scene, and we see her veer into villain-like territory when Anna first shows up.
Have you seen the sequel, though? Not necessarily arguing with the base point, because when Elsa runs off to her ice castle she's only *partially* accepted herself. She still thinks she/her powers are dangerous and can only be used in solitude, and her reason for hiding away is still based in fear. She has to stop isolating herself and let *others* see her true self in order to fully accept that there's nothing wrong with her. However there's not anything necessarily wrong with deciding she doesn't want to live within society, either, especially if that's not where she truly feels fulfilled.

I think Chris does a great job in these interviews. I like him doing the news, but he's also great as an interviewer. You can tell he's well researched and also is legitimately interested in the people. I laughed out loud to his response about whether he's screwed up names before.

They're both not quite right at the end! The empowerment angle of Let it Go is, in a moment of emotion when you've spent years doing what you're told to avoid being ostracized and then you mess up ONCE and everyone turns against you, simply deciding to embrace what makes you who you are and not hide it or be ashamed of it anymore - within yourself. The Ice Castle and isolation angle is representative of that fact that she still doesn't know how to control her powers, because she grew up being taught that whatever it is is wrong and bad, and feels that the only way she can exist as herself is in isolation so she doesn't hurt anyone she cares about, which is what she's been taught is all her power does.. It is only when her sister, friends, and family are able to show her that the thing she's thought is terrible about herself her whole life is really actually a beautiful thing that she learns the key to controlling her gift.

I have to say, Idina Menzel can be compared to Celine Dion. When Celine sang on the Titanic soundtrack, three was hated over the song and I never forgot that so I hope Idena knows there a place that music will be remembered Both song are good.

Travolta mispronouncing her name was a bit. It was revealed at the end of the show as they unveiled the predictions for the show in an envelope that was on stage behind glass the whole time. One of the predictions was that Travolta would mispronounce her name. Does Wallace ever do any research?
