Was good to see inside of these and other new trains you've reviewed. The aisle looked very narrow on the video which you commented on, for anyone of a large size would have a problem unless they sit in the disabled area.
These will be a huge improvement. It’s a shame that every single great eastern franchise has neglected their stock. The Renatus upgrade to the 321s I feel came way too late. For example, SWT upgraded their 455s at least 10 years ago to a higher spec with upgraded traction equipment etc But I sense those airline seats won’t be popular.
the only way you'd make the 321 appealing was to burn them to the ground, the 360's were nicer but space wasn't used very well. Yes the 3 in a row seating does prove challenging on very busy trains, but as the journeys are normally short it is bearable but the addition of the door area jump seats means if you are smart enough you can blag one of those instead.
I like how the new trains used by Greater Anglia have an aerodynamic nose profile. I wonder why Bombardier's abandoning it for their newer Aventra products.
I don't think they're abandoning it, it just so happens that SWR wanted to squeeze in a few more seats and WMT wanted end gangways. It's all up to the operator to decide tbh.
Good to hear about the excellent ride quality. The Hitachi 800s suffer from the DfTs absurd specification of a 26 metre coach length which on tight curves would foul the loading gauge resulting in the hard suspension which had to be employed to prevent this. Muppets!
You should try out the WMR 730's when they enter service at the end of this year and the start of 2024. They will be so much better in terms of seating configuration as they have 2+2 instead of 3+2
2 years on and these trains are proving their worth. Such an improvement on the 321 and the 360's but one or two of them are now going AWOL due to technical issues, showing that Alstom (having taken over Bombardier) are not on the ball on the maintenance side of things. That said the 720 units running for Greater Anglia are far superior to the Elizabeth lines 345's (which are from the same family) as the TFL units seem to be a light weight 9 car construction meant to allow fast acceleration in the service, but at the risk of more mechanical maladies (for ever seeing the 345's in the Ilford maintenance depot) but also poorer NVH.
It would be great to have new trains with level boarding in the North. However, I would settle in the interim for the cascaded Electrostars to justify the rollout of urban electrification for the North.
A nice spacious commuter train but with narrow gangways to navigate especially when full of passengers. Looks a nice ride but had to laugh at Superalbs better than a cl.800 as they rough riders...very true !! overall another fab video again. enjoyed the info too about fares etc, very handy in all your videos. thanks
Hello there, the timetable frequency for the London Liverpool Street - Sothend Victoria is a train every twenty minutes, which is obviously three trains per hour. It would be interesting to compare both c2c and Greater Anglia services on the London - Southend route. I know that c2c provide a half hourly service between London Liverpool Street - Southend Central/Shoeburyness. You are indeed correct to mention the narrow aisle/gangway in between the 2+3 seating layout. Best wishes and take care. Kind regards. Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire.
That dimmed lighting area is a brilliant idea! I was just thinking they should have a night carriage with low brightness mood lighting instead of the standard bright lights, it would give a relaxing and quietness inducing atmosphere, ideal for passengers who want to relax or sleep, and it could double as the quiet carriage for passengers who want to work. The main benefit for train enthusiasts would be the ability to actually see the passing scenery and night sky rather than that annoying reflection of your face and the train interior when you look out the window, on normal trains it takes quite an effort to see much of anything!
Interesting about the ride quality. Hopefully bodes well for the 701s. I'm surprised there's such intrusive heater ducting given the train has underfloor heating!
Indeed! I think the underfloor heating was quickly binned, shame as it might have been quite cool (not to mention the obvious benefits of extra legroom).
Peak/anytime day return is £33 or so though which is rather expensive! The stations Southend all the way to my station of Rayleigh (Rayleigh, Hockley, Rochford, Southend Airport, Prittlewell and Southend Victoria) are all the same price too which I think is something to do with competition with C2C. Once Covid's out the of the way I hope these trains are going to be a bit more reliable than the old heaps of nigh on 40 year old junk. I miss C2C's trains - even if they are 20 years old now, and only one facelift I believe, the service is so much better, and cheaper as you point out.
Very nice train and all, but still don't understand why operators choose 3 by 2 seating when you could have more standing room with a 2 by 2... And if seating capacity is a question then add an extra carriage and extend the platforms!!!!
I travelled on 321 class when they were operated by Network Southeast and Silverlink on the West Coast mainline from Euston to Northampton, they were good trains then compared to previous trains. 321's have been in service since September 1988 so now just over 32 years service.
3+2 seating on a commuter train is an absolute no-no for me. Although I do realise there is a pandemic and it doesnt make a difference right now, but if that train were full, it would be an absolute nightmare. Take that extra line of seats out from the set of 3 and there is SO MUCH MORE room. They did this with the new thameslink trains and it made a massive difference - I was able to board whatever train I turned up for, rather than waiting for 1 or 2 more to pass through before there was room on the old 319s.

The number of seats and legroom between seats is probably to allow more passengers on the each train than would be with 2 + 2 seating, and yes the aisle did look very narrow but must meet safety standards.
Tbh they don't seem that bad at the moment, but I can rightfully say that I'm not a fan of the seating layout now, because, one point obviously being it's 3 + 2, and the other is that gosh they're too many. Also do these units have First Class or will that be in another sub-class variant?
There will be NO first class on any Greater Anglia train, with the exception of London Norwich runs if the right set turns up. :| There is a small 2+2 area at the end of each unit, originally there was going to be a table here, but it seems to be missing in the production units. Presumably, this would have been what first class was.
Now travelled on class 720, 745 and 755 (flirts) several times. 755 standard seating is better than the 720s. I think it has to do with the 720s 3 by 2 configuration in the coaches. The seats seem a little bucket like compared to 745 and 755 standard class. Ride quality is fine, just less comfortable seating on 720s imo.
It's certainly getting pretty dark! The reason for it being so dark in the video is clever editing after I lost most of my footage to an SD card corruption. I had to salvage it somehow, and so there are a few inconsistencies.
I would probably say that they are shock absorbers. Should anyone decide to kick the seat in front of them, then the force will be absorbed into the cushioning, and the occupier of the other seat shouldn’t feel anything. It probably also doubles up as a footrest also.
Great review. Personally, the 720 seems quite disappointing, cramped and very cheap/budget looking. Yes better than what they replace but that shouldn't be the marker. During rush hour when there are people filling up the aisles and the person in the window seat of the airline style seats need to get off, it's going to be a nightmare. You'll have to start getting up 5 minutes before your stop to ensure you can reach the door before the train leaves your stop. The leg room on the window seats looks really uncomfortable as well. Those poor people sitting in the aisle seats will have to deal with bags hitting their face by the looks of it. Great to have decent cycle/wheelchair/buggy space, but the lack of step free access, that's just unforgivable in new trains.
Hope the automatic announcements weren't as loud (or frequent) as on Northern's class 331's. On a recent 40 minute journey, I counted 40 separate announcements 🤨
@@SuperalbsTravels If you didn't notice them they must have been at a reasonable volume and not too many! I also travel with TPE & LNER and their automatic announcements are much more bearable, although occasionally some guards/conductors/train managers make rambling announcements ......
I didn’t realise those trains were going to Southend I thought they were just for Norwich and Stanstead from Liverpool Street I haven’t seen any of them going to Southend before
Great trip report on greater anglia new trains the new aventras are very modern and look very comfortable I want to try them out soon the only thing about the train that I dislike is the 3+2 seating which I think is not enough space to move around that is going to be a problem when the crowds eventually come back but for now the train is good also not many operators bring out 2 or more types of new trains (stadlers and aventras) for greater anglia so in a few years the whole fleet will be brand new and better than before but I will miss some older types like 317s/321s and 360s but Yh great video anyway
Still Better than Overground 710s. 710s got longitudinal seating layout, which increase the capacity but it has significantly less seats. Worst thing about 710s is that they got no toilets on board.
@@pikachu8508 yes unfortunately most metro commuter trains do not have toilets but there is good reasoning because some trains have no toilet tank and people would be 💩 directly on to the tracks which would make engineers ill and another reason is most people only use those metro trains for an hour tops and some stations do have toilets but anyway I have not tried out 710s yet which I hope to do so soon
High-density - you're not joking! "Knees on Chin" job. "Take their money & pack 'em in" business mentality. And judging by those seats, I hope you get a free tube of pile ointment.
One little thing. The display at 5:00 says Next Stop Billericay but the lady is saying Next Stop Shenfield. Something is out of sync there! Otherwise a nice commuter train.
really enjoy your videos but can you list a full adult fare in your videos as well as your discounted ones thanks for the record im not a fan of these units particularly as i hate the 3+2 seat configurations
There's no guaranteed way to check, but I use many sources on different social media/specialist websites to deduce specific workings, and took a gamble on this train being the one I wanted. It paid off! :)
I LOVE IT!! its nice to see the class 720s enter their first days of passenger service!🎉🎊🎂 Also, did anyone notice that on the speaker it says Elizabeth line, when the train arrives at Stratford? Rewind to 10:32 to hear it. Its quite triggering when crossrail is really *cough cough* delayed
I’m so glad that the 5-Car Class 720/5s are now in service and with more Class 720s coming throughout the last remainder of 2020 and into next year. Plus with a extra 44 Class 720/5s on order that will see all 133 Class 720s on Greater Anglia. Plus c2c have also ordered 6 Class 720/6s 10-Car units to replace the Class 387/3s which it will also enter service from next year. Maybe soon it’s time to say goodbye to the Class 317, Class 321, Class 360/1 Desiro cascaded to East Midlands Railway and Class 379 Electrostar. Which I would think that the Class 379s could possibly go to Great Northern or Great Western Railway/Heathrow Express. And the Class 387/3 could go to Gatwick Express or Southern. Plus the Class 321s are to be converted into Class 600 “Breeze” hydrogen units. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_360 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_379 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_720 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_600
Luckily for GA passengers the seats look to be half decent. Certainly better than those horrid ironing boards I have to endure on the new Northern fleet. Some of those seats are even making their way into the older class 158s that formerly had very comfortable seats....madness! I can't say I'm a fan of the looks of these units but they seem fit for purpose. One little thing that annoyed me as on the information display it kept saying "London Liv Street" when there was clearly enough space for the correct word to be used. Inappropriate abbreviation of words is becoming too commonplace of late and I must say I find it quite irritating.
Have you tried out the stadler units ? 745, 755 Also it's worth noting that the competing line of C2C uses the old electrostar sets from Bombardier, which therefore no longer has the newest trains between the 2 London - Southend operators. However C2C will also receive the NEW Adventra train soon as well.
41 miles in an hour with a train that goes 100mph? The rows of 5 seats and you're not being able to pass through them is also not a good sign. You travelled on a peak time and the train was almost empty. Why the need to cramp so many seats? Going via Fenchurch Street with c2c seems way more comfy. Also, for a train stopping at an airport not to have luggage stacks seems weird. I would definitely give a thumbs down for the 720 as it's shown here. Thumbs up for you of course as always!
It's slow because it's a commuter train with lots of stops. It does reach 90mph on the last section between Shenfield and Stratford, but with many stops earlier on in the journey, it can't always run fast. It was empty because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, in normal times, I'm sure these trains will be fantastic crowdbusters, with their very many seats.
Even for short commuter journeys 3 x 2 seating and such a close pitch between rows is just totally unacceptable in this day and age.Treating passengers (customers) like cattle.
5 seats in a row, the very upright backrest, no armrests, the reduced foot space on the window sides, some seats even without windows, the narrow aisle... Sorry, but those trains look awefully uncomfortable.
@@SuperalbsTravels If I visit the UK again I hopefully will. But I'm, well,... not very slim, so I'll need at least two and a half seats. Better two. ^_^
these look a little more customer friendly than class 700 & their ironing board seats i had to endure before CV19. since loosing emt rush hour trains in may 2018 train travel in mml is dreadful.

Definetly not superior to the 321...
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Hope the automatic announcements weren't as loud (or frequent) as on Northern's class 331's. On a recent 40 minute journey, I counted 40 separate announcements 🤨
40 in 40 min!? That's mad, I didn't notice them to be so bad on these, and they're not in an annoying voice at least! :)
@@SuperalbsTravels If you didn't notice them they must have been at a reasonable volume and not too many! I also travel with TPE & LNER and their automatic announcements are much more bearable, although occasionally some guards/conductors/train managers make rambling announcements ......
The reason there are so many seats on the class 720 is because the people on the Southend line wanted more seats
I didn’t realise those trains were going to Southend I thought they were just for Norwich and Stanstead from Liverpool Street I haven’t seen any of them going to Southend before
Ah, they are for all commuter routes.
Note this is different to the Stadler FLIRt trains for the routes you mentioned.
Wait, its out?! Cant wait to ride it!,
Yep, all ready for passengers when possible. :)
Wait? It ain't stopping ha
Wait? It ain't stopping ha
Cabt wait to ride other cheap plastic trains...
Thank you! It is quite dense, but overall very nice trains, better than the older units I think.
Still Better than Overground 710s. 710s got longitudinal seating layout, which increase the capacity but it has significantly less seats. Worst thing about 710s is that they got no toilets on board.
@@pikachu8508 That's true, they are real metro trains!
@@SuperalbsTravels yes they will be a good replacement for the old trains
@@pikachu8508 yes unfortunately most metro commuter trains do not have toilets but there is good reasoning because some trains have no toilet tank and people would be 💩 directly on to the tracks which would make engineers ill and another reason is most people only use those metro trains for an hour tops and some stations do have toilets but anyway I have not tried out 710s yet which I hope to do so soon
High-density - you're not joking! "Knees on Chin" job. "Take their money & pack 'em in" business mentality.
And judging by those seats, I hope you get a free tube of pile ointment.
The seats are quite nice! :)
looks nice
They are, hope you get to give them a try soon! :)
@@SuperalbsTravels fingers crossed
The class 720 is alright but it has a narrow space between these however at least these trains are good.
Where can I find the timetable for the 720s?
It's always changing, as they are very new.
One little thing. The display at 5:00 says Next Stop Billericay but the lady is saying Next Stop Shenfield. Something is out of sync there! Otherwise a nice commuter train.
It was all working on the train, this is just an editing error due to the corruption.
Jeez look at that gap between the train and the platform at the end 11:32
Hi, that's not a platform, it's just a blank space. The platform is on the other side. :)
I believe the c2c might also be taking on these trains soon but I'm not sure.
That's right, c2c are getting a fleet of 6x ten car units in the coming year(s). :)
@@SuperalbsTravels oh, ok nice
C2c is better of keeping the good trains they have...
@@SuperalbsTravels well there was a order change, instead of ten car, c2c decided to change its order to 12x 5 car sets.
Nice that they still use the Julie Berry voice rather than that awful robotic-sounding garbage on the TfL 345s and 710s.
That’s Julie Berry not Celia Drummond
@@northessexbusphotography54 you’re right, my bad
The robotic voice is Emma Hignet I believe, who records the London bus route announcements.
@@aldertravels Yes that is the voice actor for TfL Rail and LO
really enjoy your videos but can you list a full adult fare in your videos as well as your discounted ones thanks for the record im not a fan of these units particularly as i hate the 3+2 seat configurations
Hello quick question how do you know when the new trains are running is there a website to see what train you will be getting?
There's no guaranteed way to check, but I use many sources on different social media/specialist websites to deduce specific workings, and took a gamble on this train being the one I wanted. It paid off! :)
Thank you so much love your vids keep up the amazing work!
@@MasonHd Thanks friend, I'll try my hardest!
Just a quick question, why would you want a window in the toilet... Plus (if it help me), what is a decal?
Decals just lighten it up, some nice scenic wall patterns for example! Same with a window.
Decals are transfer vinyl stickers.
I LOVE IT!! its nice to see the class 720s enter their first days of passenger service!🎉🎊🎂
Also, did anyone notice that on the speaker it says Elizabeth line, when the train arrives at Stratford? Rewind to 10:32 to hear it.
Its quite triggering when crossrail is really *cough cough* delayed
Yeah I noticed that, pre-emptive announcements much? 😂
@@SuperalbsTravels yeahXD
Well the existing Liv St. to Shenfield is the Elizabeth Line, as is Paddington to Reading. It's just that the whole thing isn't linked yet.
DLR does not go to Liverpool street
@@M1CAE1. true, true
Nice
Thanks

@@FK-qh3mm Liverpool Street isn’t that bad.
@@FK-qh3mm I hope the Class 379 find takers. They are are great train and are relatively new. But the Class 317 and Class 321. They should go.
During covid the 315s weren't taken away
Correct, some remain, as you can see in the video.
Seriously ? The window seat ledge is back ? That's one of the things I hate on the 700s. Not happy that it's back. But otherwise, great video :)
The first renders showed the interior without the duct, but it's definitely there! :|
Did you know the class 345 can go up to 90mph and at the front of the 345 trains they could've added purple instead of black anyways nice vid
Interesting! :) Thank you.
👍🏽
👍
Nice these look cool
Well one SCR train which is no longer fantasy
They are very cool, hope you can try them soon.
1:28 And the 379s?
Have they been fully realesed
Yes, they are now in full passenger service!
Horrible news isnt it...
Yeah, they're decent seats!
Looks better than the 700, but should have had a 2/2 layout, not 3/2, it's too cramped
We will see how well they handle massive crowds sometime soon hopefully.
Definetly doesnt look better than the 700 better yet the 321...
Noooo not the 321
My point exactly...
IDC ABOUT VID QUALITY. I care about you superalbs 😍
The class 345s aren’t that ugly!
Gah, 3+2 seating is not appropriate for modern commuting - they should have gone 2+2 with wider gangways. No one wants that middle seat!
Hmm, I think I'd probably settle with it if I wanted to sit down.
Can they NOT design any new train to have seats that actually align with the windows anymore !!
It’s a deliberate choice so they can fit more seats in.
Have you tried out the stadler units ?
745, 755
Also it's worth noting that the competing line of C2C uses the old electrostar sets from Bombardier, which therefore no longer has the newest trains between the 2 London - Southend operators.
However C2C will also receive the NEW Adventra train soon as well.
Yes, see this video on the Stadler trains!
ua-cam.com/video/j04JORv_pNo/v-deo.html
What makes you say the class 345 is ugly?
Because the 720 is prettier than the 345 that’s why lol
@@BobaShakeMallow lol I thought the new crossrail trains actually looked quite smart
The 357s are exactly the same with narrow aisles and 3 plus 2 seats
I must ask why your scoring the toilets down for not having a window? Surely that’s a good thing for privacy 😂
Not just a window, something to brighten it up really. Vinyls would be fine too, for example.
I am late. Sad. -Aventra spam at Liverpool Street-
Aww! Thankfully my train wasn't. :)
the class 345 is not ugly :(
It is a bit tho
Even for short commuter journeys 3 x 2 seating and such a close pitch between rows is just totally unacceptable in this day and age.Treating passengers (customers) like cattle.
I certainly wouldn't be complaining if it meant I got to sit down. :)
not three across seating like SWT Desiro fleet
Afraid so, the high-density 2+3 seating!
5 seats in a row, the very upright backrest, no armrests, the reduced foot space on the window sides, some seats even without windows, the narrow aisle... Sorry, but those trains look awefully uncomfortable.
Thanks for watching, I found them quite nice, hope you can try them out soon! :)
@@SuperalbsTravels If I visit the UK again I hopefully will. But I'm, well,... not very slim, so I'll need at least two and a half seats. Better two. ^_^
these look a little more customer friendly than class 700 & their ironing board seats i had to endure before CV19.
since loosing emt rush hour trains in may 2018 train travel in mml is dreadful.
literally every single train at liverpool street will be aventrasa eventually lol even c2c are getting rid of their old trains meaning you'll have the 745s, 720s, 710s and who knows what c2cs will be called
c2c will be getting ten car 720s.
Liverpool street will look even worse now...
not sure i like the information screens they look like an after thought and a bit small
At least they're not too big, as then you might hit your head! :)
I was going to give this video a like until you said ‘rather ugly class 345 units’!
Wait, someone agrees with me that the 345's are ugly?
Hooray for sanity!
Yep 345 is ugly and so is the 720. 321 is best!!
Yeah, the 345s are not marvels of aesthetic design.
