  • I'm no longer stuck with Verizon and T-Mobile's gateways! I got both SIM's to work including 5G SA on a Peplink Pepwave BR1 5G Pro. Hi Nate, I love your videos. I decided to go with the Peplink Pepwave Max BR1 Pro 5G for a road trip that I am planning. Do you know how carriers treat 5G routers? Are they subject to the Cellular data limits, or are they treated as hotspot usage?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  Рік тому

      You want a "bring your own device" BYOD plan. Most will have data limits and may treat it as hotspot. Hotspot is typically determined by the TTL which can be set in the 5g router (highly recommend you look into that). Sometimes they are marketed as a tablet plan. Visible plan with a TTL of 84 might work well.

    You said the sim card used in the BR1 for the VZW service came out of the VZW Home Internet Gateway. I'd like to see how you managed that bit of skullduggery... Maybe that's why you didn't show it, but I'm curious to know how you made it work. How does VZW register devices on their network such that you can mimic the VZW gateway and obtain service with a 3rd party device? Is it only the SIM card? Do you see any difference in speed using the VZW home internet gateway versus the BR1? I expect the speeds are limited on VZW's end. I recently signed up for the VZW service and learned a lot in doing so. Other YT vids confused me as they showed two different modems received with either the "Home" or "Home Plus" internet plans and speeds up to 350 for Home and 350-1GB for home plus. The thing the guy doing the vid forgot to mention is that 5G Ultra Wide is not offered in all the same cities as 5G C-band (mid band). Only those folks in cities with UW coverage can get access to the 350-1GB speeds. You can still sign up for the Home Plus plan in a C-band area like mine, but they send you the standard gateway and the extras you get are cloud based back-up and some kind of gift card, but no 350-1GB speeds. Where I am the speeds are consistently 300 - 350 and it's been reliable. I was skeptical that they could maintain this type of speed, but I suppose it all depends on your area. A few years from now when the service is more mature & loaded it may be a different story. For now, it is a nice option to have.

      See ua-cam.com/video/SWBR1Nt8kmU/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/z1jVLvDSmgk/v-deo.html You are correct Verizon gives you the gateway based on your coverage (4G/5G C-band get the cube, mmWave gets the window mount unit or new outdoor unit). 5G Home and 5G Home Plus do NOT offer different speeds, they offer price lock, streaming, sign up bonus, etc differences.

    Hello Nate thanks for the video. I have the T-mobile home with external Waveform antena (4x4) and I get 650MB/30MB on Wifi. But when I connect to the Ethernet cabe (with disable DHCP on LAN) the speed drops to 80MB/25MB. I have watched your video explaining what to do to improve the speed, but unfortunately no success. My question is, if we use the T-Mobile business with the Peplink, will I be able to connect with Ethernet to my ASUS mesh system and keep the same speeds? I appreciate your input. How does it do if you just throw up that 5g SA on all bands? I know my phone is connecting on N2 and N66 randomly for 5g right now. Also, the trashcan doesn't use the normal AP... I'll pull it whne I get home and post if if you want. I know the sim cards are tied to that AP... wondering if that's your workaround? If you're in dev tools, the AP infomration is given in one of the fastmile files that loads when you switch between pages (I think it's when you load the page that gives you statistics). It also shows you the carrier aggregation that's currently going on (B2 and B66 like to synergize where I live).
    I can pull the AP and send it over, maybe you can try the sim card with that AP and see if that works? I know the fast TMobile AP does not work with those SIM cards. But who knows with the other?

It would be akin, in the old way of doing things on routers to cloning a MAC address, but in this case an IMEI from another device instead. @@NaterTater. The question I have what do I ask T-Mobil for when I just want to get the Sim Card only if I purchase the Peplink Router you have here! When I asked the kid at the store he wanted to sign me up for another T-Mobil Internet unit for home Wi-Fi! Do I ask for an Business unlimited Sim Card and say I have my own equipment? Depends somewhat on your exact situation. If you already get 300/20Mbps then no as home internet SIM is throttled there. If you get less than that then yes it will likely improve your speeds and can easily add external antennas if needed.

      @@NaterTater I got the same email, saying I needed to confirm I had switched devices. When I clicked to confirm it said I had to change my plan/contact them. I contacted them, only to me told Verizon doesn't support BYOD. They said no plan change is available that will allow me to use my BR1. It was their support that sent me the link to your video. I'm not sure why, since they say they won't allow me to use my BR1. I tried all the changes you mentioned, but it just sits there saying connecting, but never actually connects. Also, you are way over my head. I don’t understand why a home sim won’t work. I originally turned on my T-Mobile model and ran the internet, without contacting T-Mobile. I also have a second T-Mobile sim which I got when they sent me a replacement modem. It’s never been used, so is it still “tied” to a modem? They told me to use my original sim in the new modem.

      The Suncomm 02 is much cheaper and is basically the same so I'm planning on getting that instead as it's got a Qualcomm X55 modem in it. Another great perk about the Suncomm O2 is that it's completely open source as it runs the OpenWRT router firmware project!! So it supports all the same stuff like QOS, VLAN, VPN, custom routing tables, port forwarding, 3x CA, and of course band locking 🤘
