66 turns puts Jonny vs Zach as the 4th longest match out of 7 in season 13
Hardest trick attempted: back foot varial heel (50% success rate)
Giger landed in season 12 round 1 against Jamie who missed, and again in this match against Zach who also missed (kinda)
Hardest trick landed by both skaters: fakie impossible (47.83% success rate)
Previously landed fakie impossibles:
Eric Koston season 1 round 3 turn 15 against PJ Ladd
Greg Lutzka season 2 round 1 turn 9 against Lucas Puig
David Gonzalez season 4 round 1 turn 46 against Cory Kennedy
Mike Mo season 5 championship turn 58, but PJ Ladd defended successfully
Eric Koston season 6 round 1 turn 27 against Dennis Busentiz
Eric Koston season 6 round 2 turn 44 against Morgan Smith
Eric Koston season 8 round 2 turn 47 against PJ Ladd
Tyson Bowerbank season 11 round 1 turn 21 against Cody Cepeda
Zach Doelling season 13 round 1 turn 36, but Jonny defended successfully
Easiest trick that gave a letter:
Yup, you guessed it, the switch FS shuvit, which is 86.75% successful on defense out of 83 attempts, gave Jonny Giger letter S
This was statistically the easiest game to win so far, in terms of average offensive and defensive consistency rates combined, with the average historical success rate of the tricks in this match being over 80% (mainly from all the shuvits)
Can't wait to find out just how many times johnny got greedy with a back foot late flip early on and lost...at least twice now
ok
@louismoffett2853 😂😂😂 nah we need this type of analysis. Skateboarding deserves it
@@deberleofficewhen was the other time? I genuinely don't know ajd would like to watch
@@Theledge232 I did yesterday
This is the first time (that I remember) a ref calling out not popping the trick.
Good one to be the first since the set trick was popped tits high
This kid did better at reffin' and calling them out than the adults do at other BATB.
Kid has more integrity than every ref before him. It’s about time the ref calls a non popping trick since it is clearly stated in the bylaws
Seen it before in a Cody cepeda game
Kid actually shreds too hes from woodward
Zach understood the assignment:
Do simple tricks that hopefully Jonny might mess up.
Do NOT Mess up and therefor let Jonny set, cause he will do something nuts.
Also landing simple tricks over and over is a great way to boost confidence
Yeah, Jonny isn't the most consistent at some "basic" tricks that Zach has 98% of the time, especially switch. Jonny went for blood early with that backfoot varial heel thing no one else does (I love that trick btw), but as soon as he went on defense I was like "oh boy, he's in trouble."
Yup, this is it. Some skaters get so caught up in the hype of Instagram and TikTok clips that they neglect the basics.
Every skater have their own weaknesses. Maybe Zach knows his weakness. Basic is the key.
Нет, вот чем отличается про от любителя
Basic tricks for the win
This kid is legitimately one of the best refs they've ever had lol
one of the best skater too
he missed a toe drag
Good calls and some jokes, even. Most refs look really nervous, but he knew what was up.
came here to say the same thing
On god
This kid nailed reffing. From calling out the no pop, to also letting the sketchy lands but with no heel or toe drag go. Keep the stripes on this kid for the rest of the series.
i agree
He actually did miss an offensive toe-drag from Zach, but that no-pop call was perfect! 👍
And he rips! Legend
Dude seriously, this kid should ref all the games, he’s not burnt and is observant.
Yep best ref ever and it's a kid that's saying something.
the kid is flawless on a skateboard
yaaas go Kristion!
fr
JG be breaking my heart every time. I’m always rooting for him!!!
Those instagram skaters don't know how to play. They can only make 5 second " sick " clips...
He will come stronger next time
@@MotoSly Ya seems like they learn all the crazy stuff but don’t spend enough time being consistent on the fundamental tricks. Glass cannons
Werd
@@adamlowry8687 Most of them, yes. But Johnny's a workhorse - a legitimate skater by any definition.
His style just isn't well suited to SKATE.
This was a terrifying, but amazing experience. I was so nervous I forgot to even play music in my AirPod. Thank you for the opportunity 🙏
Yo, you played your game of skate and it worked. That was consistency right there. Well done!
very solid , great tricks n great adversary
from costa rica here
Dude. You got this.
You’re the fuckin man Zach! Love watchin you in anything you do!
If your opponent can do every trick, you just have to never miss. Incredible strategy and consistency on display. That's how you win at BATB. Respect to both competitors.
Yeah, it seemed like Geiger wasn't mentally prepared to grind through basic tricks
fun game 🙏🏼 thanks for having me 🙏🏼✨
Maybe going so technical so early was regrettable? I respect it though. Makes for more fun game. Get em next time!
Very kind of you for giving anyone else a chance in this competition 🙏🏻 Your german crowd loves you no matter what ❤
Johnny!!!!! This game was one of the best!!!!
cheers dude! it was an amazing game ❤
Learn hardflips
If you’re familiar with Zach’s channel and you watch regularly, you know how consistent he is.I was telling myself if Johnny messes up, Zach ain’t gonna miss 😂 It’s insane how big his bag is
Yeah but Johnny got them circus tricks, and I mean that in the best way. If he kept on landing weird late variations and imposibles Zach would’ve been in trouble
Ayo!
Jonny's bag is bigger, but Zach's consistency is just extraordinary
HE barely even went in to the bag.
I been following Zach for a while and thought the same thing. He don’t miss
Zach was ridiculously consistent. He got a lot of free letters just going through the basics. Props to Jonny as always 🙏 always love seeing him around the Berrics
I picked Zach because I thought he consistency would win. Giger is awesome but he’s not a consistent skater. I noticed it his match with prod. Everything thought it was an easy win for him. Nope.
Skate seems to have two strats. Either run the table with all variations for each trick, or get obscurely technical.
I also factored Zach’s consistency into my guess. I did get nervous though cuz Johnny wasn’t playing w him. He started pulling out weird tricks ASAP and I liked the ruthlessness lol
@@chefsweaty6744 Yeah same. I was like "whoa dang Giger is already going hard!". Great game all around!
He played it exactly like he said he was going to. Consistent tricks in variations and close with some tricks Giger has problems with. He studied Giger's weaknesses like an NFL quarterback. Well played.
Damn, really wish we could see Jonny in later rounds. He has some of the most unique tricks.
we need this kid more reffing
He did a really good job!
Did the best job yet lol. I know it's just a friendly game if skate but kinda embarrassing for the adult refs in the games already played.
FR
yeeesss
True
dude, consistency beats complexity! was really expecting jonny to get up there in the ranks but man, zach was solid with landing all his tricks. great game for sure
So disappointed in the outcome really wanted to see Johnny move up this was his second time at batb
@@loweni7460This is Jonny's third time in BATB (7, 12, 13).
Oh damn what a surprise! Solid strategy by Zach there man, I think with JG going so hard at the start to make him go back to basics and then crank it up again threw him hard, solid play
started to test the basics if giger got another turnover the game wooulda been differnet outcome gg luv these
Yeah I think Jonny starting with knockout punches first thing wasn't the wisest. You noticed Zach sorta lulled Jonny to sleep with the basics. Rock the baby till he passes out. Very smart and fundamental.
@@FREEM1ND I think Jonny knows what his weaknesses are - nerves and fatigue. For him, his best bet is to end the game as fast as possible - he can't do all his crazy stuff at the end of a long slog of tricks. Going for the super tech knock out punches straight up was a good strategy - unfortunately Zach knew his weaknesses too, and exploited them to the fullest. This game was a wonderful demonstration of how important strategy is.
yea Johns switch tricks are slightly sketch
@@seanylewl point taken! My only rebuttal would be, as we saw, one mistake means that Jonny loses control and someone can exploit those weakness. High risk high reward I suppose. Zach came in ready to win. Jonny thrives on the grind, lots of joy in his skating. He's not necessarily built for competition, doesn't really take it super seriously. Not a knock against him though, I think he'll always be my favorite flat ground skater.
Called it. Jonny has a huge bag of tricks but this is a game of consistency, which Zach has.
This was a mental game as much as it was physical. Zach's fortitude to come back from 2 letters playing someone like Giger is bonkers.
I mean at this point what does "someone like Giger" even mean, dude got bounced in the first round three times now
@@DingleberryCatto Bro he was the only one to get remotely close to beat last year champion, Jamie. What do you mean he's getting bounced? he just got unlucky last year facing griffin first round and didn't practice as much for this year, he went there amid travels, you can only imagine how tired he must have been, i wish i could see this game again on a better day for Giger)
@@Райан021these Johnny Giger and Jamie stans lol won mostly through gimmicks but can’t even pop and get letters from basic tricks
@@Райан021 excuses lol, hes always uploading videos with the most insane tricks and is always getting eliminated first round. Jamie Griffin who is another skater of his type won the entire thing first try, and he travelled from ireland. Giger can’t handle the pressure its obvious
so hyped for zach dooling. great skater. been a fan for years. crazy consistency and board control
Props to both these guys for making it to batb! Win or lose it's still a big deal that you even got to be a part of it🤘
War of attrition, Zach had a great strategy!
Definitely!
True but boring to watch :/
Zach’s been one of the best around for a long while now, imo. Glad to see this fantastic matchup
What a game! That could've went anyway. Good Calls by the ref.
been over a dozen years since I've stepped foot on a deck, watching community like this enjoying the sport makes me want to get back into it badly
do it
That was a solid strategy by Zach. Props 🔥
Holy Canoli-Epic game -I can’t save this one for laters/Not possible ☝️. I have to see😊❤️🔥❗️Love them both
Zach is so underrated. Stoked for him winning this!
lol bro dont comment that when it was posted 30 min ago spoiled whole thing for me
bro spoiled the game right after it was posted 😭
@@joeysanskate lol don't read the comments before watching the video?
@@bruh-ez4wo who tf reads the comments before watching?
Johnny tried to trap his opponent with the new wave tech tricks but Zach took him back to elementary school and humbled him with the basics. Awesome round!!!!
Jonny Giger got owned by simplicity. If Zach would’ve missed, Giger crazy tricks wins, but fair game.
3:00 "late varial heel? I will do every shuvit variation till I get you a letter on a shuvit!"
Damn, was hoping Jonny would advance. But after three first round exits, he may not be built for this. He’s a flat ground legend but it’s different to do it with this pressure. Fair play to Zach.
Yeah man you are right, is not the same thing doing tricks at first try, thats the bottom line I think
Right take away the pressure and he would be almost unstoppable.
Not just the pressure, I just don’t think he is a consistent skater. He doesn’t have everything in lock like a lot of the skaters here do. People forget those insane tricks of his takes hundreds of tries to land.
I’d still invite him out. He’s one of those guys that if he gets on a roll. He could win the whole thing because he’s got such a deep bag of insanely hard tricks.
@@hofx666I agree, after seeing his Berrics performance I think that he seems more persistent than consistent
I really thought Jonny was taking this, but I'm beyond happy with the results, Zach has worked hard as f to get to this point, he deserves the notice, he's really good.
damn this kind of referees we want amazing job for this guy!!
at first i was like why is this kid reffing, then i realized he was the best ref they've ever had
Zach is clean af. mad pop and bolts
Damn! Unexpected but such a sick match. Zach straight up killed it
I clicked so fuggin fast. This is gonna be awesome.
super sick intro with the animation. I love the animated Jimmy Carlin dancing in his underwear lol awesome match as well!
Gutted for Jonny getting to technical to early didn't do him any favours.
Play to win. If I was there would open with my hardest trick. Why start with basics and risk losing?
Wow what a game! I had hopes that Giger would win , i love those weird and difficult tricks that he does, but Zach impressed me with his consistency. I mean, it's not always just do an amazing trick which you know your opponent won't land, but doing the same trick in all 4 stances , increasing the level each time he sure is amazing, loved the game. Also, Jonny seems much prepared mentally and matched him as well , THIS is a game guys.
Not gonna lie man I saw the length of the round and thought Giger took him swiftly. I slept on our boy Doelling!
This battle show us the key to winning a game of skate in pro level is not doing the hardest tricks, is the consistency to not miss any trick
Zach just wore him down. It was an endurance test.
Jonny got beat by his own nerves it seemes as those trick he messed up on are very rare to see him miss.
@@oisinmckellar3046 nah giger has been here before. Zach came at him with the most run of the mill trick streak. It’s so simple that it’s easy to miss. Like how open goals in rocket league are often the hardest to make
Wow, an awesome match-up. So good to see more and more European skaters up there in LA like Levi, Johnny and Jamie. Much respect for travelling half the world to play a game of skate, knowing fully well it can be short and televised to the whole world. Must be unlike a full contest day where you get to feel out a skatepark and get practise runs and a few chances to nail your stuff, plus you are away from your local turf and in foreign land. Much love and respect, you making us Euros proud, shout-outs to Johnny and Levi and Jamie from Poland🇵🇱🫶
I like the fact Jonny went for hard tricks from the get-go, you don't see that often. It makes sense to do those when you have all the stamina. Zach played it real nice too, progressive from easy to bangers.
Jonny bro , when I seen this video pop up I thought you were a lock , I have seen a lot of Zach's stuff and dude rips , You are flatground legend!!
Wow Giger never past the first round in any of his what…three BATB? Wild
To be fair his first year he was against prod his second was Jamie griffin and this year is this it’s not like they’re making it easy for him.😂
Its hard when you nerves get to you. Hell i get all anxious and jittery just watching
yeah... you could tell he was nervous and I think he was being very self critical, which can get in your head.. honestly I feel that Gigger has the tricks to win this, but my perception is that his biggest enemy is his mind.. I wanted him to battle Griffin.. Too bad :(
amazing that jonny can only do tricks that look terrible
@@lilsleepy3332lmao I was thinking the same
PLEASE TAKE THIS REFF FOR ALL BATTLES OF BATB HISTORY!!!!!!!!
Been wanting to see Zach compete for so long
I've been waiting for this for ages
You both are amazing skateboarders. It could have went either way. 🙏💯❤️
that boy zach knew he had to buckle down n tire him out. consistent, old school, classy game of skate. well played brother.
Giger needs to come back again. Zach did amazing. Two very solid guys.
zach deserves this opportunity more than anyone!! he is criminally underated
Seriously, I was so bummed to see he was playing Johnny because I figured he was cooked but he surprised me. He definitely deserves the recognition of being one of the most consistent skaters alive
This games a great reminder to always work on all the fundamental tricks not the weird ones 💯
Maybe some people have more fun landing weird tricks?
na, only if you do this stuff. I would much rather someone just keep branching out and leave the basics behind
@@altmaster3288 def more fun to watch them. This got boring as soon as JG messed up haha
Goes to show consistency is key in a game of skate
Johnny went for blood, busting out his backfoot varial heel thing (he really should think of a name for that, it's a beautiful trick) right off the bat.
This ref needs to do every game here on out.
Oh man, this makes me so happy 😀
cant believe it man, giger keeps getting shafted on the first round
I think johnny does it more for the fun of it, he tries hard tricks first wich he knows he coul miss while zach was full strategy, didn't even give him a chance to any trick
@@tommasorovario6657I think Jonny desperately wants to win..that pressure just gets to him
He not that good. He's good at what he does. 1,000 trys for some youthbe footage. But not this.
@@rodneystewart9542go back and watch his batb game against Jamie, not that good 😂 he got in his own head the pressure of people watching him live threw him off.
@@oisinmckellar3046 Or Jamie is just better.
Hell yeah Zach! Was rootin for ya!
I’m a Huge fan of Zach and Jonny ❤️🔥
Props to them both for a Damn Good Show 🙏
Love that opening animation
Varial heel is seriously the coolest lookin trick.
He's contemplating life over there lmao
funny and a fair judge
Zach was so stressed the whole game but props to him for keeping it together. I hope he goes far
Well played by Zack.. interesting strategy there.. worked Johnny Down..that was a great game.. been looking forward to this one..
I don't know why I feel so proud to see Johnny at BATB, I smiled all the time, I watch him skating since I started and he's so inspiring for me. He's the perfect representation of what skateboarding means for me, work, fun, community. We're very proud of you Jonny !
Well done Kristion! Didn't expect Zach to win but I'm excited!
Giger is an awesome skater but man... Zach GOATED him so hard
One of the best switch hardflips I have ever seen. Good stuff.
How when it wasn't done proper. It was only popped high.
Sewa does them proper in all stances
@joshuadansby2874 Everyone has their own opinion. Thank you.
taken out with switch hardflip again lol. damn, i really wanted to see Jonny in the finals and he gets a boss on the first round again. Zach did like 25 tricks in a row, wth man.
ive been waiting for this one!!
Think we found the ref for finals night! Calling out a no pop trick must be a nbd at BATB!! BTW congratulations to Zach. As a native german I feel a bit sorry for Jonny the "Eidgenosse" ;)
Zach stomping that late back foot v heel attempt even though it didnt flip was so rad, dude will commit to anything
top tier comment. it was a really good first attempt too. dude could probably learn that in 10 minutes
It wasn't late.
Congrats Zach that was crazy
I love how there’s so many strategies to win a game of SKATE. You can go all out in the beginning, start off slow with the basics and build your way up, you can get technical and pull out so freestyle tricks, etc. Here we see Giger trying to get technical, but as soon as he missed, Zach stayed true to his slow start strat and stay consistent. Zach didn’t miss one trick when he was on the offensive. Good stuff
I hope this is the future of this contest. Insane game.
I wanted both to win. But I'm very happy Zach won. Seems like, such a chill, humble dude. And hes deserving, hes put in work his whole career
Congratulations Zach. It's nice to see the Powell Peralta team there supporting.
wow good battle.. Been watching lots of Zach skate with Dan and crew lately the guys a beast and so consistent I am Cheering for Doelling to win it all
Dude I love how Zach clutched that and didn’t let Johnny get another chance to try something ridiculous
Solid reffing, little man! Need more’a that 👏👏👏
This kid is the best ref that berrics ever had!!!
Wow I didn’t know who I wanted to win more! Both incredible skaters, going to be remembered as legends.
Gg
I knew Zach had it, but that strategy of playing the basic tricks was pretty awesome. Congrats!
It's not the basics, it's going specifically for shuvs and bigpsins which is Giger's weakness.
@@redshift86"it's not the basics, it's the basics"
Zach Doelling sure studied Giger's weaknesses.
Yes Zach!! I had him winning this one with consistency alone, but was definitely scared when Jonny started out firing
I wanna see Jonny vs Sewa so badly😢
So, are you telling me this kid has actually been the best referee BATB has ever had? Go figure.
after all this years finally we see Johnny back
So stoked for Zack and so bummed for Jonny at the same damn time.
I stg when I skated I managed to figure out the late back foot varial heel and never saw anyone else ever do it - this years tricks have been pretty crazy in a few of the rd 1 sets
Played to win it. Basic beatdown. That's how you get it done. Wish we could have seen Johnny get to set some tricks though
Fancy seeing Tim here lol
You should write Johnny a check too
This was a very exciting game with two of the best flatground skaters around.
make this kid reff all games
Zach DULLing... what a snorefest. Let's put Anderson against Giger so we can actually watch something interesting for a change
IDK Why everyone expects Giger to win his not a real pro just a youtuber.
Nobody expects that. Actually, when he wins one day, overyone should be in shock 🤣
He beat Jamie Griffin in a game of skate so yes they do🤣. I'm not a fan of flat ground but i love Streat league @@jakubbriza7274
So sick! Zach was so consistent on this one!
Zachs consistency alone will take him far but just wait till he starts pulling out the party tricks too
I’m curious as to how many weird tricks he has, I feel like it’s more than I think
Nope, he's just feeder for the next game. A mere sacrifice for the true skater gods. May he rest in peace in advance.
@@ambientexpanse he wont win but he’ll definitely do well imo
