Good job...i love your work...im 15 years old and you are one of some peoples who inspiring me...i think you have god ideas..good luck and thank for inspire
Thanks alot for this video. I had no idea this was even possible. Seems to be less work than forming, mixing and polishing, but perhaps more demanding?
Good luck maintaining that. Before becoming a professional GFRC manufacturer, we used to install microtop into kitchens. Never again, it wont stand the test of time and hustle and bustle of everyday life for more than a couple of years. Gfrc is the way forward
Not being rude Pete. You have a big following and you seem to have the passion for concrete like all the people in my trade share. The more you push gfrc and to a good standard the better for our industry. Look up Jeff Girard and the concrete countertop institute. I promise youll love it and won't look back. You did a nice job btw. I was rather rude ommiting that.
Hey! Thanks so much, I really appreciate your feedback and thank you for the second message as well :) I do love solid concrete and prefer it much more than an overlay. But was looking for an affordable option to show that could be applied to various projects. I'll look up Jeff Girard. What mix do you use for your GFRC? Any recommendations? Would love to experiment for with it. I've only used glass reinforcement in normal mixes for reinforcement around sinks etc. Thanks again! Cheers
DIY PETE theres more to the industry than the glass fibres my good man. It's the mix design, how it's mixed together (high shear mixer), how it's sprayed (takes years of practice to master popping near perfect slabs), the right way to wet polish, and the high tech sealers we use. In other words theres a method to everything and a reason why we do everything. For example with the mix, everything is done to the gram and is in there for a reason. It will open your mind to some unreal projects my friend. If you want to speak more about it, I can add you on Facebook and message you?
There's a couple of DIY youtube channels who have had a go at it and think it's easy to do, But there work compared to the professionals is a stark contrast (i.e. it looks amateur). I think you're in a prime position to promote good high performance concrete.
Would like to know how this has held up over the past four years. Didn't think an overlay would be strong enough to withstand the beating of a kitchen island. Would love to know. Thanks
Hey Pete. Your project is coming along nicely. I really like the waterfall style island. It just adds a little extra style without being a fad look. I believe it will be stylish for decades to come.
Think you might be able to do this on an existing countertop? Really don't like our current countertops and would think about just adding a waterfall edge to the existing peninsula.
Hi Brett, it is possible. I'd recommend doing some additional research on " concrete overlay counters " and such to see what materials are okay going over, and what to use as a bonding agent. Also see what preparation might be needed for your situation. Cheers
Man that look amazing Pete. Always love watching your vids and I learn a lot. I’ve made the floating shelves and the ice chest with a lil of my own mix to it. Love the blue on the cabinets. Keep it going Pete. As you say Cheers from Houston Tx.
Hello! What’s the best way to make a barbecue island with a concrete waterfall and countertop? If you make it out of solid concrete will the sides or top crack? And do you need to make joints
That looks way nice. Looks like quite a bit of work probably more complicated as an upgrade or remodel. I'm usre it would be easier during the intial construction of the counter. Great video!
I have an old corner entertainment center I built long ago, kinda bulky, but have been pondering what to do with it. I just might do something like this.
What sucks is I have 2 layers of plexiglass - the top layer being tiles. I was hoping for multi-color tiles, like a checkerboard, but ended up just white. And it shows all the dirt. Pondering whether to go over it with concrete, or try to revive it. Either way, the sides need some major work. Especially the speakers. The foam from the old speakers has crumbled, and I need a more modern cover (and speakers in the boxes). I literally built the thing back in high school.
Hey Pete im about to embark on a brick bbq with a chimney, never done anything like ghis before. But once i build up to counter height i want to pour a table top with a waterfall support on one end. So im trying to find a video or tutorial on how to pour a solid countertop with a waterfall. Do you have any videos of pouring a solid counter?
Hey Sebastian! Sounds like an awesome project. it is going to be a great place to entertain at your home. Here is a link to a video and post I did of solid countertops. I don't have a solid countertop video of a waterfall type though. I love how they look though, and have seen it done. www.diypete.com/how-to-make-concrete-counters-for-an-outdoor-kitchen/ Cheers!
hey @DIY PETE thanks for the great videos! After seeing both this video and your concrete countertop video I wanted to ask if you prefer one method (overlay, or actual concrete) over the other? We're looking at doing concrete counters in our kitchen but the overlay method looks way easier. Thanks again for your time
Hi Aaron! I do prefer solid countertops, and would recommend them for your kitchen. Here is a video that shows the most simple concrete counter method I've ever shown in my opinion: ua-cam.com/video/A0Pd4o8gjfM/v-deo.html --- Solid countertops have a more solid feel and wear better.
Great idea, I might give this a go when I renovate my kitchen only thing I'd do different is run a small round over bit 1/2" along the edges and a bigger one 1 1/2" for the actual waterfall edges
I like this a lot as an option for my kitchen Im about to start. I'm debating between this process and cast in place. Im curious as to the durability of the corners and edges due to the thin layer of material. Any idea on how this will hold up? HAve you tested this process to see if hard edges will easily chip from kitchen abuse?
Hi! So far it has been super durable, but I recently did the other counters using the reverse cast technique for solid countertops. I do prefer the look and feel of the solid tops. I wanted to experiment with other options, but I'd do solid tops if you are able.
Hi Kathy! It has been holding up well. The sealer I used is food safe. It has been working well. However, I do prefer the look and feel of solid concrete tops better.
Hi Pete, love the look of your concrete overlay waterfall counter. We are hoping to create a similar look for our outdoor BBQ area. How does this material work if used outside? Any advice on what not to do if using this technique outdoors. Thanks!
Hi Simran! I haven't used this particular brand outside, but products similar to this are commonly used as an overlay for concrete patios, so it is definitely possible. Using an outdoor sealer is definitely one modification. --- But look into outdoor concrete overlay products. Best of luck!
Hey Ben! For this situation the overlay was a perfect solution. For the rest of my countertops ( which are not sooo huge ) - I'll be doing reverse cast solid concrete tops. I like the "Solid Countertops" although they are a lot of work to do...
Superb project I am French and would like to know your products and brand used and explanation translated into French to understand the work process thank you in advance
Awesome! How long between each coat of overlay? There were 3 right? Then the protective seal, also 3? 6days? Or less, please say less but only if it's true!?!
Hi! The concrete process took me about three days. I started on a wednesday afternoon - I taped the seams and added the pink bonding agent. It dries super quick. I put on the scratch coat, and let it dry overnight. I then sanded the next day, and then did all the layers of grey concrete. They dry pretty quick as well. I let the last coat dry, and then did the sealer, which also dries fast. The concrete portion can easily be done in under 6 days as it is an overlay material that doesn't take long to dry. Cheers!
Considering a similar idea for my kitchen island. My only concern is that I want to place an under mounted sink in the island and I think the edge may not hold up to the daily abuse of pots and pans. Anyone have opinions?
Great tutorial! How has it held up? Particularly your vertical waterfall sides? I'm wanting to do a concrete fireplace surround; all the way to the ceiling. Do you think this product would work well (and hold up) in that type of application?
Hi Caryn! It's held up well, and the sides look great. It works awesome vertically. This was the first time I used this brand. I usually use EliteCrete. That is actually my favorite, but my local supplier was out at the time. I do think this or a similar product would hold up well and I've seen is used before. I'd recommend doing some searching for " Concrete fireplace surround concrete overlay " etc to see some additional ideas and recommendations. Cheers!
Robin Lewis not meaning this in a bad way what so ever but neither is Pete’s and it sill looked great I’ve been doing concrete for five years and you reduce the “chatter” marks if you hold the trowel flatter to the surface. It makes for an easier job and it’s perfectly fine to use water but if you needed to get some spots down a little elbow grease does better. I’m not sure how the skim coat acts with to much water but I would be scared it would flake. Never the less it looks great and I love the look of concrete counter tops. Exposed aggregate finishes are absolutely beautiful
Hey Mike! Great to hear from ya. The overlay was definitely a bit different to trowel then a normal mix when you can float the cream to the surface and have a lot more working time. This dries super quick and wasn't quite as easy to work with as some brands I've worked with where you use thicker coats. As you mention troweling is definitely an art and I'm still trying to master it for sure! Cheers!
That was awsome! I did something similar but with a different product. I wish I had seen this video first. Can u tell me what product is it that you use?
I think you should do a solid surface/concrete shower next. It seems these methods would be very similar and nothing is really out there showing it at a diy level. Just a lot of Pinterest pics but not much else. Cheers
I am really enjoying your videos. I think I will try a concrete table top or bar top. I have been in construction for many years, but am just getting into woodworking projects. Thanks for the great explanations with all of your videos. Couple questions, where do you get your Melamine and have you tried a concrete mixing bag? Thanks!
Hey Steve! Great to hear from you. I get melamine at Home Depot. I have not tried concrete mixing bags as I usually buy pre-mixed bags. If I mix it is generally in a wheelbarrow or concrete mixer. I've seen them, just haven't had the need to try it out.
Hey Pete, Thanks for the quick reply. I am really enjoying your channel and have shared it with my coworkers today. Funny thing is they are doing a cast in place countertop right now. Keep up the great videos, Steve
Love this project. I am looking to find the downloadable plans but don't see the link on your site. Where can I download these plans and for the kitchen island? In your opinion, using the same philosophy and basic execution, could the concrete overlay work if I was looking to replace my laminate kitchen countertops and concerned about the weight of full concrete tops?
Thanks Cory! For normal countertops, I'd recommend beefing up the cabinet tops if you don't think they are strong enough. I did the overlay because I really wanted the kitchen island waterfall look and needed to reduce the weight. I think you could do the overlay over the laminate, but that solid tops would be the best option. I'll be doing solid countertops for the rest of my kitchen ( and beefing up the cabinets a bit )
Hey Cody! I used products from Concrete Coatings, Inc. They will sell it to you if you call in, but it would be worth looking to see if you could find a product locally as well to save on shipping. concretecoatingsinc.com --- You can tell them you watched my video and they'll be able to tell ya what I used ( the rough and smooth micro toppings and the pink bonding agent ) Cheers!
Pete, awesome video, we will be doing this! Question for ya... would this type of setup work for all of the countertops in the kitchen specifically around the sink with all of that moisture? Additional sealants would help? Thanks!
Hey Ryan! A number of folks have done this overlay type process. However, it has a different feel than solid concrete and I definitely prefer solid tops. Here is a video I did showing solid tops: ua-cam.com/video/A0Pd4o8gjfM/v-deo.html --- This has held up well and I did it since this is on a second floor and I didn't want a ton of stress on the floor and joists.
The kitchen looks great! I'm a big fan of the construction and design, but don't care for the blue paint choice on the island cabinets. It clashes a bit.
Hi Jim, this process can be done outside. I actually just did a set of tops for an outdoor kitchen that are solid and I do prefer the solid process for counters over this method. But the overlay product is great for outdoor projects ( mostly floor finishes etc ) and is known to withstand weather.
Hey KP! It's been holding up great. However, I am a much bigger fan of solid concrete tops. It just doesn't feel the same. At some point I will probably replace it and just do the top with a big solid slab.
Hey KP! It could be done, absolutely. The big reason I did it this way was to save on weight. There is a basement below and I didn't want all the weight on the joists.
Hi Pete! I just found your channel and this overlay treatment is very intriguing. Do you think it would work on top of old laminate counters? Do you have the link to this product? Thank you!
Hi Marina! I know many folks have used overlay products to go over laminate. I would recommend contacting a manufacturer of an overlay product to see what they'd recommend. I used a product from concretecoatingsinc.com - There are companies I know that do specialize in products specifically meant for going over laminate counters ( as long as the counters are in stable condition without any flaking or peeling.) Another option would be to look into doing solid concrete counters. Let me know what you end up going with!
Hi there, I made sure to add a ton of screws to make sure the boards are sandwiched will --- and glue isn't a bad idea either. You could mesh tape over each seam. I chose not to and haven't had any issues though.
Hey Andy! The cabinets were quite a project and took about a week. The concrete overlay / top was more straightforward and I completed it in 3 days. Built the plywood portion one day, did the rough coat the next / let it dry overnight. ( then did the rest of the coats the third day ) They were not full days, but I spaced the project out over that time.
DIY PETE ...it’s amazing! I’m buried in my 1st restoration project now. I can’t wait to finish it and get back to building things! Great to hear from you! Cheers!
Pete you are the master of concrete! I like how you are saving a lot of weight by doing the overlay over the ply wood, as always it looks great!
Thanks for watching Melrose!
How did it hold up? thinking about doing this in my kitchen
Good job...i love your work...im 15 years old and you are one of some peoples who inspiring me...i think you have god ideas..good luck and thank for inspire
Hi Adam, thanks bud! That is great you are enjoying projects and doing them at a young age. Keep up the good work!
Thanks alot for this video. I had no idea this was even possible. Seems to be less work than forming, mixing and polishing, but perhaps more demanding?
Looks great! Keep us posted on the durability of the overlay vs a solid concrete solution. The weight savings is a huge benefit.
Thanks Jeff!

Very nice!
Do you think the scratch coat would last on the outdoor kitchen?
beautiful island...how wide and long is it. I remember in the other video you mentioned your plan was to go for 3x7. Is this 3x7?
Think you might be able to do this on an existing countertop? Really don't like our current countertops and would think about just adding a waterfall edge to the existing peninsula.

Hey Luis! That's awesome you've done the floating shelves and ice chest! Hope all is well down in Texas and thanks for saying hi!
Awesome ❤
Can you apply this same method to an outdoor setup? Live in Texas looking at ideas for something like this in my backyard.
how has it held up after 5 years?
That's looking gorgeous man! Hardwork pays off. subscribed!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Mohammad!
Another awesome job, it looks great!

How did it hold up ware and tare ??
You think that would be a great idea for an inside mobile home kitchen island? Need to know asap
Hello Lisa, this would be an affordable solution that is lightweight for your mobile home. So definitely an option to think about!
Great idea, I might give this a go when I renovate my kitchen only thing I'd do different is run a small round over bit 1/2" along the edges and a bigger one 1 1/2" for the actual waterfall edges
I'd agree, that is a great idea to get those edges more rounded. Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

Hi! So far it has been super durable, but I recently did the other counters using the reverse cast technique for solid countertops. I do prefer the look and feel of the solid tops. I wanted to experiment with other options, but I'd do solid tops if you are able.
What product did you use for the overlay?
Can this be applied to a wall?
Looks great! When I google concrete overlay, there are like hundreds of types. I wish he gave detail on what he used, or a link.
Hi Bryan, I used the overlay products from a company named concretecoatingsinc.com - Cheers
Do you know if it is food save and can it be used just like concrete. Now that you have had it for a while hows it holding up? Looks great!
Hi Kathy! It has been holding up well. The sealer I used is food safe. It has been working well. However, I do prefer the look and feel of solid concrete tops better.
What is it called when a kitchen island drop in an angle like that?
Hi, if I make this in my home, how do I take it apart to move it? It won’t fit through my doors unless I take it apart. Please answer my question
Hi! This is more of a permanent piece unfortunately. ( at least in my situation. )
Amazing
Thank you!
Hi Pete, love the look of your concrete overlay waterfall counter. We are hoping to create a similar look for our outdoor BBQ area. How does this material work if used outside? Any advice on what not to do if using this technique outdoors.

Hi Simran! I haven't used this particular brand outside, but products similar to this are commonly used as an overlay for concrete patios, so it is definitely possible. Using an outdoor sealer is definitely one modification. --- But look into outdoor concrete overlay products. Best of luck!
Is there a matte sealer?
Great technique! Not sure I can get the specific products in the country. Would it work with regular cement?
Can you provide a link to the products?
Could you provide the list of the materials you used in this project? Thank you
Thats a great option over a pored counter. What do you prefer?
Hey Ben! For this situation the overlay was a perfect solution. For the rest of my countertops ( which are not sooo huge ) - I'll be doing reverse cast solid concrete tops. I like the "Solid Countertops" although they are a lot of work to do...
You find you have a better finish with a reverse cast to poured in place?
Where I can find the product ??
Nice job
Hey how strong is this, would it crack easily, anyone know?
uaaauu ficou muito lindo
obrigado
Superb project I am French and would like to know your products and brand used and explanation translated into French to understand the work process thank you in advance
Hi! I used overlays from this company: concretecoatingsinc.com - I hope things are well over in France!
Awesome! How long between each coat of overlay? There were 3 right? Then the protective seal, also 3? 6days? Or less, please say less but only if it's true!?!

Considering a similar idea for my kitchen island. My only concern is that I want to place an under mounted sink in the island and I think the edge may not hold up to the daily abuse of pots and pans. Anyone have opinions?
is the surface strong enough, since the concrete is quite thin? very interesting video!
Thanks! This is a strong material.
This is beautiful! How long do you estimate this will hold up? I’ve been highly considering doing this in my own kitchen.
Hi Jewel! It's been doing well so far. But to be honest I prefer solid concrete tops. I like the look and feel. Cheers!
Great tutorial! How has it held up? Particularly your vertical waterfall sides? I'm wanting to do a concrete fireplace surround; all the way to the ceiling. Do you think this product would work well (and hold up) in that type of application?

I'd recommend doing some searching for " Concrete fireplace surround concrete overlay " etc to see some additional ideas and recommendations. Cheers!
Pete, do you think the concrete overlay would adhere to a concrete backer board? I’m looking to make a faux concrete island base.
Yes, it would bond well with a concrete backer board.
Such a cool solution when weight is a concern. Not sure my trowel skills are up to par though! Great job man
Robin Lewis not meaning this in a bad way what so ever but neither is Pete’s and it sill looked great I’ve been doing concrete for five years and you reduce the “chatter” marks if you hold the trowel flatter to the surface. DIY PETE oh I hear ya. I bet the sanding in between coats helped
That was awsome! I did something similar but with a different product. I wish I had seen this video first. Can u tell me what product is it that you use?
Hi! I used micro toppings from Concrete Coatings, Inc for this project. I've also used Elite Crete overlays for quite a few projects as well.
I think you should do a solid surface/concrete shower next. It seems these methods would be very similar and nothing is really out there showing it at a diy level. Just a lot of Pinterest pics but not much else. Cheers
Thanks for the ideas!
I am really enjoying your videos. I think I will try a concrete table top or bar top. I have been in construction for many years, but am just getting into woodworking projects.
I'll be doing solid countertops for the rest of my kitchen ( and beefing up the cabinets a bit )
it would nice to tell us which concrete sealer you used
I used the Chang Concrete sealer available on Amazon. amzn.to/2IUGbFy
Super, thanks so much
could you use this method be use for counters around a sink, instead of a full concrete counter top?
Yep, It can be used.
Thank you
Would you have to remove the sink? I'm hoping no.
How long did the entire project take?
With the cabinets and top together, it was about a 2 week project.
muito linda esta bancada curto muito Deus vídeo
obrigado!
Did this last?
Hello Pete! What site/ company did you use for your concrete pverlay products? Thanks!
How durable is it? Can it withstand chopping and normal kitchen work?
Hi Christopher, it has been very durable thus far. However, I do prefer the look and feel of actual solid concrete tops.
DIY PETE awesome!
Hi, Pete! Any chance you could post a link to the concrete product you used?
Can you apply this over a ceramic tile counter? Doubt it but, thought I would ask. Nice video!!!
Hi there! I would be a bit worried in case the grout joints ever cracked, as it could cause issues with the overlay.
Thanks!
Can this process be used for outside?
I live in Toronto Canada and would like to try this for a BBQ Island
Hi Jim, this process can be done outside. I actually just did a set of tops for an outdoor kitchen that are solid and I do prefer the solid process for counters over this method. But the overlay product is great for outdoor projects ( mostly floor finishes etc ) and is known to withstand weather.
Came out awesome! Personally, I think a smooth, polished look would be better. But, came out awesome nonetheless!
Thanks!
the smooth overlay - what would be a UK equivalent product ? can you give me a brand name ? great job btw
Thanks! hmm... Anyone else have ideas for a UK equivalent?
Damn bro we waited 3 weeks for an 8 minutes video! Hahaha keep up the good work
Life gets too busy sometimes :) Cheers and thanks for watching Hamad, hope all is well man!
Awesome! About how thick is the final coat and would you recommend this for a shower wall?
A little less than 1/4 inch. Most likely around that for a shower as well. Cheers!
Which outlet do you have for the side of the island? It's super thin!
Hi! I ordered these on Amazon ( 1 for each side ) -- they are great. amzn.to/2I6brF0
Wow
Thanks!
Looks awesome man! The house area must've been a wreck with dust from it all
Hey Adam! Wasn't too bad I had a vacuum hooked up, but still had a descent amount of it :)
Nice work. How does it hold up over time?
Hey KP! It's been holding up great. However, I am a much bigger fan of solid concrete tops. It just doesn't feel the same. At some point I will probably replace it and just do the top with a big solid slab.
@@DIYPETE alright. You think you can do the same shape in solid concrete?
Thank you!!
Hello, Can this application can be applied on the floors?
Hi! I'd recommend googling Elite Crete. They have a great product for floors that is very similar.
@@DIYPETE thank you! I will follow up with them.
Will it crack at any of the seams where all the plywood was layered on top of each other?
Hi there, I made sure to add a ton of screws to make sure the boards are sandwiched will --- and glue isn't a bad idea either. You could mesh tape over each seam. I chose not to and haven't had any issues though.
That’s awesome Pete! How long did the concrete take from start to finish?
Cheers!
Great job...I didn't get the name of the overlay product?
Thanks Derrick, I used overlay from concretecoatingsinc.com
What is the name of the products you used?
