    This project originated from viewers asking me to combine LEDs and concrete. Do you think the project succeeded in bringing the suggestion to life? Any ideas for improvement? And, after watching this what project ideas do you have for the combination of LEDs and concrete?

      @robertpastorella 6 років тому +1

      Have you found or played around with any materials that diffuse the LED light? I've been trying to knock down LED light that is super close to the diffusion material. Anyway, awesome project, great results, and a video worth watching! Also + for PPE, e.g. respirator, Nitrile gloves, etc.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому +1

      Yes, quite a bit actually. What color diffuser are you looking for? Check out the white semi-transparent acrylic I used in my LED Bluetooth Speaker video -- it does a great job of wide dispersion from pretty close. I also bought a semi-transparent black acrylic sheet that I've yet to try.

    • @robertpastorella

      Mostly white diffusion, I'll check that Bluetooth speaker video for that, thanks!

      Thank you! I am definitely no pro... I'm a patent attorney full time, and started playing with concrete a couple years ago. I would suggest not going for a waterfall on your first GFRC project, but with a few other projects under your belt, it is totally doable!

    Another winner, Mike - dazzling! 280 Lbs delivered and installed! By now, you know how I feel about Aircrete, so I won't belabor the point.
    How about this for a table concept: an M.C. Escher-esque concrete table. Chose from Relativity (staircases), or the birds/fish, Lizards, Drawing Hands, etc... With molded relief in black and white or hand-stained. and then topped with glass. It's ambitious, but I think it would be stunning. And you're just the man to do it!

    Great job! I love your show. Now, can you show how to do a kitchen countertop with the same concept? It's the same idea but weight becomes an issue. I figured you'd do it in place since it's going to be really heavy.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      At some point I will do a kitchen...just need a freind with a kitchen they are remodeling! I would do it off-site and use the same pre-cast technique. With GFRC you can keep most any piece to a manageable weight by using foam inserts.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      +Dwight Hobdy cool! Let me know if you need any pointers along the way. I definitely recommend doing a couple small tops, and one with a small vertical surface to get the feel for the mix. Lots of room for error with horizontal surfaces, but with vertical, you've got to get the mix consistency right. Definitely doable, but a little practice helps :)

    To combat slumping, have you tried fixing covers to the side forms to stop the concrete flowing down?
    I’ve got a concrete counter planned that has waterfalls on both sides and feel this would be a way to eliminate the risk of slump.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      Check out my recent Arctic erosion table... I solved the slump issues in that project... Use an AR glass mesh, and pack in thin layers, 1/8" or so each, to build up verticals slowly.

    Hello great video!!!
    Wanted to ask you what did you use to sand the final product??
    1.)Diamond sandpaper on your orbital sander?
    2.)What grit did you use ?
    3.) Would a wet sander work better ?
    4.) Did you expose any of the aggregate?
    5.) Have you experimented with any other sealers that last a long time ?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      Just normal sandpaper, up to 220 grit, then 400 grit wet sand by hand

    Buy a trowel lol, also concrete is generally only 10-25% cement and is mostly aggregate (could save some money on future builds). It turned out beautiful though, very impressive.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      Thanks! FYI, cheap concrete like Quikrete is only 10-25% portland cement. GFRC, however, which is much stronger, is usually around 50% cement. You are comparing apples to oranges there. GFRC would not work with a lower cementious content.

    I have seen a lot of people do this without the sprayer, would you 100% suggest having the sprayer or can the top coat be laid in and brushed in (similar to your white small table top with the wood piece)? right now my compressor is on the fritz and I would love to try some of these projects but would rather spend the extra 200$ id have to spend for compressor and spray gun on other products. Thanks in advance, love your work!

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      depends on the project -- if you have large vertical surfaces, you really want a sprayer. If not, then pouring and brushing will give you pretty good results.

  • @MichaelScottPerkins
    @MichaelScottPerkins 6 років тому +5

    Awesome project Mike!!! It was cool to see you make the GFRC from scratch, and using stuff you don't have to order off the internet. GFRC is something I have been dying to start working with. But I've just got too much of my old man in me to pay shipping costs on things like "White Portland and Sand." But I think this video has inspired me to just get off my @**, order some glass fibers, go to Home Depot for everything else, and start experimenting with GFRC.
    My one and only question I have is... what are you eating at around 04:30:00? It sounds delicious.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому +1

      Ha, I wondered if anyone would catch that :) Probably dinner....at midnight...like usual....
      I would recommend ordering some powdered polymer (maybe a couple bags of the Buddy Rhodes admix, which aren't too bad to ship), so you can source all the cement and sand locally. If you don't have a masonry supply place where you can get white portland, you can also just use the grey portland cement they have at home depot (which is super cheap). You can't do white, but it works just fine for grey GFRC.

  • @LightGesture
    @LightGesture 6 років тому

    Would like to know more about how you made the concrete glossy... I wish there were videos on how to make white concrete, black, glossy, etc. Don't know how to make concrete from scratch...

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      +LightGesture no huge secret...this surface is typical for GFRC if you sand and seal it. As for white concrete and other details, check out my other concrete videos, including a couple with a white mix. And if you need more details beyond that, my Instructables have a ton of detail (just search for Modustrial maker on instructables and you'll find them).

  • @lewismajor7982

    Good video, I also like the design. But I am curious why he didn't use a plasticizer to help the backer coat level out? Also why not place the foam board in place to create spaces then remove them, instead of leaving them in the project? It seems like leaving them in would negativly effect the flexeral strength?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      I actually did use plasticizer in the back coat. I've found that when I get to 3% AR fibers, I can't get it to flow -- the fibers are just too dense. I used a lot of fibers in the mix because it has to do a 6 ft span, basically unsupported.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому

      Also, the foam core probably makes it a bit less strong, but we had 1.125" of GFRC in total ( 3/4" on top, .375" below foam), and I find it easier to just leave the foam in when not doing self consolidating.

    I stumbled across your video while randomly browsing yesterday and being an electrician.. i LOVE anything with LEDs and this.... This will defiantly be a project for my home. But Im going to start off small and make bedside end tables. Ive been searching up the supplies needed, I can find some things available local (sand, concrete, GF and pigment) but the other chemicals and such (alto-pozz, KongKrete, ect) I cant seem to find a Canadian supplier. Would you happen to know of any by chance?
    Thanks! And Keep up the awesome work!

      Thanks! Do a search for a Buddy Rhodes or Smooth-on distributor in Canada. They will have what you need. If you share pics of your creation, please tag me on Instagram (@modustrialmaker) - I'd love to see it!

      +Dean Spilias I just used my standard table saw blade, which I think is just a 10" 40-tooth general purpose blade.

    Are you able to eliminate bug holes by spraying your initial coat? I've never seen that done before. BTW - I've found the Chen sealer to be best for my kitchen countertops. It is a bit expensive. Do you have a cheaper alternative?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +1

      Fishstone's sealer is good but not cheap either. the less expensive ones tend to be surface sealers only, unfortunately. This is fine for a table, but countertops really benefit from a penetrating sealer. And yea, spraying the face coat gives you a really nice surface out of the form. Not guaranteed to be without bug holes, but definitely less, and sometimes, pretty close to perfect.

    Creativity and ability!! Very nice stuff. I am just getting started on your videos and want to attempt to try this process. Is there a particular video that explains the process in detail of setting up the forms. I think I got it for the most part but the roller ball is a bit murky thus far. Where do you buy that and are you simply removing the excess by hand after it dries? That is a great process if so. I apologize if this is a redundant question but if you could provide a link to the purchase of the "Ball" . Great Stuff Mike!!!

      The first one I did on a white concrete table does the basics for forms. I also have instructables (same user name as my channel) with details written up.

      Yes, you remove the caulk by hand There is a link in the video description to buy the ball tool from Amazon

    Beautiful installation! do you generally have to remove the cream of the concrete before sealing for the sealer adhere to the surface?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      I have used sealer directly on concrete with no finishing, and it seems to work. Although, I would imagine it would not penetrate as well and would need to be reapplied more often

    • @insaneseinn
      @insaneseinn 5 років тому

      Modustrial Maker thank you for you quick response, your projects are so inspiring! Would the sealer adhere if the concrete had been polished using a wet polisher starting from 800 grit up to 1500grit... Ideally I don't want to expose the aggregate.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      I think so, but would recommend trying a small test piece first to be sure. just keep in mind that a surface seal is not the same as a penetrating sealer, which offers much more protection.

    Hi sir in I have been watching your video they are awsome,i have a question GFRC premix is not available in our country is there anyway to diy mixing it

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      Yes, you just have to find the ingredients locally. I have some recipes linked to in this article www.instructables.com/id/GFRC-Floating-Concrete-Hearth-for-Concrete-Wood-Fi/

    Hi again, how did you seal and waterproofed the acrylic strip to the counter top

  • @mikeadam80
    @mikeadam80 6 років тому

    how did you account for the thickness of the leds to keep it flush with the top? i'm thinking of just doing a strip in the back side of my outdoor kitchen bar and wiring from the underside

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 років тому +1

      The thickness of the LEDs doesn't matter so much, you just want them set back a bit underneath the acrylic diffuser. The diffuser rests flush because I cut it with a bevel angle and used a matching angle in the form to make the recess for it

    Hey, great video! I've been wondering, why don't you vibrate your concrete? or do you vibrate it and just don't show it?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      No need with GFRC....there is a defoaming admix that prevents bubbles in the face coat.

  • @virtuaviolin

    Excellent video, precise and ilustrative. I don´t have a compressor + hopper gun, it could be done without face coat? In this case would be use only one mix with fiber glass from the beginning? Thank you ;)

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! With a vertical surface, it would be tricky to do well without spraying a face coat. If you are just doing a flat countertop or table, then you can just pour a thin face coat in and spread it up the sides with a chip brush

      +Alex Shliomovich I recommend using ws2813 if you permanently attach the acrylic, since ws2813 will keep working even if one LED or two go out.
