  • In the last video, I showed you how bad the Seplos BMS actually balances. Does it even balance at all?🤷‍♂️ I discussed this with Seplos and they came up with a solution: a new firmware for the V3.0 BMS.
    In today's workshop, we are going to compare the balancing action before and after the upgrade, we measure the balance current and use the FLIR camera visualise the difference .
    And this is one of the major advantages of these BMS, as they can simply be upgrade with new software. This can provide bug fixes but also new features and functions. Just like Tesla, these BSM manufacturers just need to listen to the community and keep these updates coming to improve their products.

    Well done for keeping us all updated on Seplos systems. I have a Seplos V2 running a bank of cells which uses passive balance. What a nightmare. Cells 1-5 have a higher voltage than Cells 6-15. Now I have an expensive problem with the cells. I was thinking of changing to Seplos V3 and they seem to also supply a separate board for active balance. I would have to get both V3 board and Active board and throw the V2.
    Have you tried the active balance board, so I know if it worth pouring good money after bad in trying to get Seplos to work and not destroy any more cells?

      There is no need to upgrade a BMS if it is working fine. The V2 is not a bad BMS, just the settings can be tricky to circumnavigate that it goes into a protection state all the time.

    Andy, a new feature i can suggest is to adapt current charge / discharge limit with temperature mesured with four probe ! I could be a enable / disable function if customer wants, and will increase lifecycle of cells when weather is cold or hot.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому

      Is temperature such an issue when charging lithium batteries?
      I would assume, if the battery is hot while charging and we reduce the charging current, the battery won't cool down. There is too much mass which has heated up and just a lower current won't make a difference. This is what I have observed last summer in my garage

      @@OffGridGarageAustraliait's more for limit charging at cold temperature, i think it can be an interresting feature. Excellent work @OffGridGarageAustralia Andy! And results from a manufacturer willing to listen! Question for you. Is there any reason I couldn't / shouldn't use a T-tap for example into the BMS balance cable harness to plug in a NEEY or other Active balancer, hence to alleviate the need to have more wires routed to the battery direct, when after all we have this wonderful circuit board strip which has the sense wires neatly coming off it already. I want to avoid more loose wires in the area of the terminals. I'm also thinking a Y-cable to BMS consisting of 2 Female connectors on one end (BMS, and Balancer), going to one female connector (Long voltage Sense circuit board) within these various DIY case kits. Please weigh in!

      Check the new DIY box V3 from EEL battery. Looks very nice on video and solves your dilemma. Unfortunately, they only provide Seplos BMS V2 (10E). I'm personally a bit worry, that Seplos will provide no new updates to V2 after they introduced new V3 version. And on the other hand, I don't think EEL is capable to develop own BMS firmware update.

    Dear Andy, I am watching you for a very long time and I find all your topics interesting and instructive. I recently had safety concerns regarding solar panels. These are uninterruptible source of power when the sun is shining, and there is virtually no protection in case of an event such as a short involving a single string of solar panels. In my place, we often use large strings of solar panels, with a voltage of up to 400 Volt. In case of a damaged isolation, this can actually kill people or cause a fire. Typically, there should be two damages side to side, but in case of a mechanical event, this is very likely to occur. I was hoping for some mechanism based on the differential. One could measure the current two points of the electrical loop and cut the loop at these two points if the two measure are different, meaning that there is a short circuit. I never saw this anywhere and though it might be a relevant topic for you. Sorry if you already covered it. Cheers

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому

      Thank you for being with me for so long!
      I don't see a concern here with the solar panels. If you have a problem with one string in a panel, this would be only a few volts and not the full string voltage as you said. And killing people... no unauthorised person should touch such systems in the first place, if in fault or not. We also have requirements for certain safety mechanisms like Earth Fault Alarms which would tell you if something is not right.
      Solar panels can take quite a bit of current in reverse before they start getting that hot and burning. That's what the maximum fuse current states on the label at the back of each panel. This is the safe current which can go in reverse through a panel. And I would assume, this is a very safe number and the critical current (before it starts burning) is likely to be 5 times higher or even more.

    I got the V3 BMS deliverd with FW 0.1 on it.
    And I told them right from the beginning, that the balancing does not work...and they let me try it with every iteration again and asked, if it now works...they outsource their work to us Andy...in order to save cost.
    I am not a fan of their business practice and it took me a lot of time to always set up new tests....but at least they fixed it now.
    I hope, that will listen to your recommendations with the Float mode (CVL2).
    Also you can recommend them to not send CCL= 0A to the Inverter, once the SOC is reset to 100%.
    Than it takes way more time, until it eventually balances.
    Also they could increase the balancing time for each resistor a bit and allow it to get a bit warmer...and even add a heatsink to the 20Ohm resistors.
    Thank you for all the effort and your spreadsheet!

      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Raphael. Yes, we are doing a lot of testing and quality control work for them, no doubt.

      Probably the cooler won't help because they do no active temperature monitoring on the resistors. So no matter how cool they are, you won't get more balancing speed. Tey are switched on only for short and than there is quite a waiting period until they are back on.@@peterpanacik2708

    I haven't yet seen the video where the SPAT name is created, but I think I finally figured it out? Solar Panel Angle Tester?
    I'm pondering a question. If I've been paying attention in class (and I'm still working my way through watching ALL of your videos), charging a cell to 3.45 volts results in a state of charge in the high 90's%. My question is, if one were to always only charge the battery until the highest cell reaches 3.45 volts, then drop back down to float voltage, and never actually balance at all, would enough cell deviation ever develop to be significant?
    I should add, this assumes all cells were top balanced before putting the battery in to service.

      If you only charge the first cell to 3.45V and immediately drop back to a lower voltage, it will somehow hide the imbalance in your pack. It would mean, that all other cells are on a lower voltage and therefor SOC is also lower than in the first cell hitting 3.45V. So, the imbalance would aggravate over time without being rectified or even visible.
      Imbalance occurs all the time while charging due to difference in internal resistance and other factors (variation in chemistry, temperature).

    I think this may be the problem that I have asked on the previous videos. The issue with not able to go above 55.20V. One cell will go to 3.65 but some other cells are not even touching 3.4. Deviation was around 200 to 240mv. It comes with 200mA Passive balancer. You have suggested to do a top balance and finally I have solved that with the help of NEEY balancer and disconnected it . After checking for few days now the difference is under 20mv when pack goes above 56.8V . Also charged the pack to 58(3.63V/cell). I think now it missing the track of SOC, that I may need to manually set to 100% since now its not hitting the cell overvolt at 55.20V or even 56.8V. May be in previous case it set to 100% at 55.2V since its hitting Cell overvolt and now its not hitting. Thanks for the help Andy.

      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, great you've got it going.
      Once top balanced, the passive balancer may be enough to keep the battery under control. It depends how you charge and if there is enough time for the balancer to do its job.

    @LarryKapp1 9 місяців тому

    You kept the voltage with a small current . How do you think it would work in a regular solar charge where the current is much more ? I am sure once it is balanced then the current would drop naturually towards the top voltage. But maybe people would need to hook up a nice regulated power supply like you have shown to get the batteries to a much better low cell deviation if they are way off in the first place ? Nice that you helped Seplos figure that problem out and yes weird they didn't test it first .

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому +2

      If you set the voltage to say 3.55V per cell and also start balancing at this voltage, it should work once the charge current has dropped off. Balancing can only work if the charge current is smaller than the balance current. Otherwise you still add current and charge to the cells.
      But, you're right. This laboratory testing as there is no solar and load connected. In a normal scenario, this will not work as good as shown in the video. There is always some power going in and out of the battery when in use, even if it is fully absorbed.
      I guess the solution here would be to use a more powerful balancer.

    Hi Andy!
    And thank you again for this video and this new test, which seems almost conclusive, unfortunately the balancing time is certainly too long, because this type of BMS has too low balancing.
    By changing the start of the balancing, maybe it will be a little better?
    But nothing beats a good active balancer of 4 or 5 A minimum.
    Their update is still effective, that's good.
    With a battery that has very good cells it should work well in the end.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you.
      The balance start time will have no effect on the result. In fact, it can make it worse if you start too early. I'll make a video soon about this, it's frequently asked.
      I agree, an active balancer would be a far better solution than making this 150mA balancer work through an update. These passive balancer still need a far higher voltage to be somehow effective.

    Yes, one has to wonder why these manufacturers ship batteries with BMS's which do not balance the cells properly. It isn't just Seplos. Probably 80% of the sealed "car battery" style LiFePO4 batteries also mess up the balancing parameters. And without communication, there is no fix for those.
    I suspect it is because most of these brands / companies are just shell companies. They don't produce their own hardware, or even produce the battery packs. They don't have anyone with expertise on what the settings should be. Nothing. They just slap the stuff together and call it a day. And when they get into trouble, they just disappear and then appear again a month or two later with a different brand name in-hand.
    Seplos, though, seems to have gotten over that "fly by night" hump, so it is doubly concerning that they could even ship these things with non-working balancers. At least they fixed it.
    Another problem is that even with working balancers, for many of these brands (particularly the ones that do not have BMS communication available) the balance parameters are hardly ever published so you just can't tell if your charging target is sufficient to trigger balancing operations in the battery.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому +1

      And how many customers actually care? They buy the battery and use it as it comes, never go into the settings. In case of the Polo batteries, they would constantly disconnect (with OVP) and appear to be faulty.
      All easily avoidable with the correct settings and QC before shipping.

Fully charged every day with an LFP battery is bad news ALL the manufacturers say for best cycle life to use 20-80% DOD with an occasional balance charge to 100% if the battery monitor goes out of sync. At 22.00 hrs when I switch to grid my battery is never sitting at 100% because the sun has gone by then, Summer time SOC is 80-90% and Winter 50-60%. LFP would be the same but I could use a smaller battery which means less initial cost, this is a big factor for most people as a storage battery is the largest single cost. If you have already built your battery and the cells are connected in series, the easiest way is to get an active balancer and connect it to your battery. Increase the voltage of the battery slowly to give the balancer time to balance all cells. Monitor the cell voltages through the BMS app. If one gets say over 3.6V, stop increasing the voltage and wait until this voltage comes down. Then keep increasing the voltage. Repeat this until all cells are at 3.6V and you're happy with the overall cell voltage difference. The BMS will show you these details.
      If you haven't built your battery yet, connect all the cells in parallel and set the charger to 3.6V. Wait.... the charging time can be very very long here, so be very patient. You may not see an increase in voltage for days.

    Many questions for Seplos to answer.
    1) Well that explains a lot, FLIR says "there's your problem". The spot temperatures still suggests these resistors aren't getting 100% of expected current 100% of time, avg current still seems very low. Dremel coating on resistor or try removing 1 for further testing with ext leads to test various resistances, current & voltage, temperature, waveform & duty cycles.
    2) They were working on the balancing problem before Andy tested. This upadate dated 24 Sep 2023. Users complained with ver 0.1 but took another 4 version updates to better fix this. Where's the inhouse testing to deliver what they promise?
    3) Maybe the programmer assumed a pulse on & pulse off but the hardware design needed constant signal to remain high to keep balancing. SNAFU.
    4) What's with the multiple versions? BMS v3.0, HW v10 or v11, firmware update file says v1.15a, connected management software says BMS using v0.5
    = great confusion & more potential errors.

Would be very nice when you keep the community up to date if something new comes up to that bms :) Thank you Andy!

      @@auamanu the fw for the BMS V3.0 is not great. It has some nice features but others are just too bad and you cannot really control when shows 100% or 0% without hitting UVP or OVP.
      Seplos is not really interested changing that, I guess. They think it is working as designed and going into OVP and UVP is not a bad thing.🤷‍♂

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Seplos released a new firmware last week for the V3.

      I think it only fixes some SOC calculations during charging/discharging. It is awful in V0.5 and 0.6!

    Having these battteries leaving the factory balanced makes it hard to spot such a bug, which may have been introduced in a later firmware by accident.
    It happens to the best of companies and the best programmers. No shame in admitting a mistake and fixing it.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому

      Yes, correct. But still, the balancing is a core function of the BMS so it should have been tested with each FW update.
      I'm just glad it was a software glitch and not the same saga as with the NEEY where it took them 4 hardware versions to get it right.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I agree. Rigorous testing of new firmware versions should be standard for all products. Unfortunately sometimes "it works" is about as detailed as it gets.
      But fortunately you were there to educate them. I suspect testing the balancing performance won't be forgotten anytime soon 😂

    Thanks for the vid, Andy.
    But I have to ask. Why does a balancer "burn off" excess battery capacity rather than extract that energy from the high cell and charge the lower cell?

    • @mikebarry229
      @mikebarry229 9 місяців тому +1

      That would be an active balancer. Passive balancer costs less and can be effective if the cells are reasonably well matched. An active balancer working all the time (which many do) has the power to mess up the balance at lower states of charge and may actually waste a lot of energy doing unnecessary balancing. Best solution seems to be to use a passive balancer most of the time but to plug in an active balancer when required.

    not impressed
    I mean, batteries would get full at around 2-3pm and by that time there wont be another 2hrs of enough sun to keep it full charge.

      Now that the initial imbalance has been corrected the subsequent days won't need as much balancing time as there won't be that much of a cell difference.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому

      These batteries have never seen a proper top balancing, so a passive balancer will take a long time to rectify the issue.

    best BMS ever?? I don't think it makes sense to balance a bms for days on end... if during the charging process the cells are not balanced, some cells will overcharge or remain undercharged.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 місяців тому

      You cannot balance the cells during charging. It is just not effective.
      Once the pack is fully top balanced, the balancer should have no problem to keep the pack that way. With these passive balancers, you still need to charge to 3.55V+ to make them work in a reasonable time.
      I just tested it here and let it run for an extended period of time to test the balancer. That's not something someone would usually do.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia with these china BMSs it is of course not effective, reasonable BMSs have therefore also balancers with >1A, the balancing during charging works wonderfully. My EMUS BMS for example balances with 2A and reduces the charge current when the balancing threshold is reached. Then it balances for another 10 minutes and that's it. Everything else is nonsense.
      People, do not buy this Chinese garbage!
