One reason why I think Kettenkrads are so cool is because they are sort of like early ATVs. They are like a beefed up version of an old ATV. I admire how unique they are. Crossing a tank with a motorcycle.
When a Panzer is interested in a Vespa, they make babies
They also have a top speed of 44MPH which is really good for a tracked vehicle
Iam they did not crossbreed a plane and a motorcycle, it would end like a oppressor from gta V
it has that ww1-2 motorcycle charm and yet its unique parts with the tracks
Shoujo Shuumatsu never gave us the top speed of these babies, but from this video there's quite a sample of how surprisingly fast they are.
The top speed is 50mph but the Wehrmacht advised to keep to 44mph
@@Midsix yeah, rough terrain could scramble the mechanical parts right? But still 40 miles at rough terrain is pretty fast, I feel a strong "jack of all trades, master of none" vibe with this vehicle, it crosses through the narrowed wooded roads of germany far more easily due to its size, it has tires and tracks for crossing both rough terrain and roads at good speed, and it's a personnel/supply carrier, but it doesn't perform none of these functions with excelency just decency
@@pr0chszy It was more like rough terrain would cause you to flip it over.
@@morrismonet3554 When I say rough terrain, I don't mean so rough that it could flip a Kettenkrad, a terrain that rough would flip almost any vehicle, of course these distinctions would be for the driver to discern.
Es porque Chito nunca aceleraba, las únicas veces en las que literal solo Yuri lo aceleró era cuando estaban a punto de morir en 2 ocasiones.
I must ride that cutest vehicle once in my life time, I vowed onto myself.
ol_fortune if you come and visit Militracks, you can have a ride on one of these 😉
ol_fortune - You call such a machine cute? Weird & cartoonish maybe but not a cute vehicle
@@Ajourneyofknowing you're right it's not cute, it's adorable

Nazi cute
German Engineer: "Hans, do you need a tank or a motorcycle?"
Hans: "Ja."
Jawohl..
Mein gott
have your jokes now shifted from Fritz to Hans? : D
The real question I'd ask the engineer is why there is a front motorcycle wheel at all. If you watch carefully around the corners, it isn't really doing anything. So is it just there for balance? And to give handlebars as a natural grip/control method for the treads?
@@esperagothe front axle is mainly for control at higher speeds and to certain degree, offroad. It's handling like a trike, when fast, but if you want to turn while being stuck in Rasputitsa, you need both track differentials AND the wheel. Then it becomes a tractor with a appendage in front. And of course, you want to grip onto something, like the arse of Bertha during that wild ride.
When you hit the *Girls last Tour* to hard.
Snazzy Dazzy - What?
@@Ajourneyofknowing It's the title of a manga about two girls traveling through ruins of civilization after an unknown apocalypse... And their vehicle is a kettenkrad

Even today it’s pretty impractical to put 3 people on a modern ATV, but the Germans pulled it off in comfort and style in the 1940’s
Bill Dauterive I agree but as far as “over engineered ATV “ this is the outstanding definition.
This thing's really fun to drive in BFV
Superior people produce superior engineering
@@thewokefindergeneral7631 yea they still lost the war so not really
@@evandotterer4365 did you see how many countries it took to bring them down? In terms of quality the Germans were light years ahead of everyone else.
A dream that will never happen to me
Joesph Stalin at this event you can have a ride on them on the off road track, could be the start 😉
Unfortunately
$600 to ride the one at DriveTanks in Texas, dunno what Militracks charges. I'm also seeing ads for replica ones for sale, seems somebody still makes them.
Shut up Stalin you little piece of shit.

Sure lol
Honestly if someone remade a modern version of them say with a small but powerful diesel engine they would sell like hot cakes here in NZ ,every farmer would want one ,but gold miners ,coal miners ,forestry ,fisherman ,moss pickers i could see many uses for them here but it's our wet mud bogy conditions that require something like that especially in the south island .

I am amazed there are some that have survived. That makes me happy . As a young man building models this was on of my favorites. Where can I visit and see these up close?
I know that a website sells the blueprints for this for 200 - 1000€ so not all kettenkrads are wartime ones
The tracked motorcycle can be revive as rescue vehicle in the australian outback. It will be useful.

What a fantastic tank looking bike, I hope it can take my two favorite girls to top of the city ruin
Pretty amazing machine👍
Fantastic
Such an interesting vehicle. Was reading the motorcycle wheel is completely ineffective. By turning the handlebars it applies braking to track left or right to steer. The motorbike bit was to make German motorcycle soldiers more comfortable driving it.
Kit Walker most of what you said is indeed correct, the wheel does also takes the first hit when driving off road and makes it more stable and the first 10% of turning is done by the wheel, if you turn more it’s indeed braking on the track
Dude it looks fun

They are indeed cool and fun. Later this month at Militracks there will be again a bunch of them, where you can also go and hop on 😉 if you liked the video, make sure to like, subscribe and hit the bell button to keep updated when a new video comes online
Wow those things are surprisingly fast and maneuverable. By looking at them you'd think they'd top out at a brisk walking pace, and I figured making a L-bend turn on a reasonable width of road at anything but the slowest of speeds would be impossible. Very capable off-roading, too! At first glance these things appear a bit silly, but seeing what they can do I really see the value it could bring having these tag along with the troops. Do they accept LS engine swaps, though?
These where used at a lot of places during the war, they could nearly go everywhere, mud, snow, ... and could also pull quite a lot. Due to the fact that they are that small they where also very handy in tiny walking trails. Afther the war also a lot of famers used them in their vineyards since they could go trough 2 rows ;)
@@WJHJ Yeah, I bet! Kind of like the grandfather of the four-wheel drive ATVs you'll sometimes see modern special forces utilize. Maybe better 'cause I bet those could pull a smaller field gun in situations where six guys would have to play pack mule without it - mountain troops and such. Pretty awesome they had a peacetime use too hehe. Very neat vehicle.
@@angry_zergling Indeed and they pulled from time to time some artillery, sometimes an airplane and where also put into airplanes for paratroopers ;)

Amazing how that narrow motorcycle front wheel can steer that thing!
It doesnt. It has a differential braking system for tighter turns.
@@banaana1234 which is operated by turning the handlebars, if i may add.
the front wheel does help though, especially in faster speeds and slight turns.
