I'm an automotive locksmith. Those worked on older cars and maybe very few newer cars with up and down buttons. In the old days the door mechs were rods and clips. If you hooked the rod it worked. No exaggeration I've opened 1000's of cars with that style tool. We run 80-150 calls per week. I've been doing just cars for over 40 years. This style tool works on maybe 2% of modern cars now. The difference is they went from rods to cables. These won't work on cables. They are easy to get hooked like you did. You can run a second one down the door to unsnag the first one. I did have to take a few door panels apart back in the day to get them out.
The biggest problem and no offense because I make money off of guys like you, police, firefighters who end up breaking the door linkages because you don't know what you are doing. Cars have actually become even easier to open with the new tools. Airbags and long tools that go on the inside of the car. If you have an up and down button you use an airbag and some type of button grabber. Even with airbags people bend their window frames out. Like anything it's the small details you don't know that will mess you up. Access Tools currently makes the best opening tools. I still carry a slim jim though. Some pickup trucks still use up and down buttons and some cheaper GM's. Not really much else off the top of my head. Slim Jim's rarely work on Toyota up and down buttons. They have a guard rail in the door panel. There are ways around it but you still will rarely get the button to come up. There is hardly a car we haven't opened or any dumb situation we haven't come across. We get calls for people who messed up their doors. They won't open from the inside or outside because the broke everything inside. I can still get those open but $$$$$$. I start at $300 for those.

maybe before going wriggly-wriggly scratchy-scratchy inside you car door, it would be wise to check the linkage diagram to _know_ before hand where to put that slim jim to open said car door... 😏

These only work on certain types of lock systems. That’s why a “master lockout kits” come with multiple types of tools

My 1986 Dodge Charger (2.2) was super easy, with a wire coathanger. I kept one wrapped around, underneath the car, just in case.

I found a GRIP branded lock out kit at Ross clothing store, it was like $12. It seems cheap but has shims, couple slim Jim's and a couple styles of long hard wire thingys, figured I'd give it try

I don't know about that tool exactly but I ussaly made my own out of steel banding. I made 6 when I worked at a machine shop with just snips and a file to deburr. It does take a deft hand and you can google where the bars are on each make and model. I always help people out including newer f 150s is thr 2019 range. If your having issues I would suggest a air shim and a big finger lockout tool much easier.

3 out of 5 stars for the Button Master. Let me start by repeating Access Tools makes the best lockout tools overall. Talking about their airbags, Door Jacks and long tools. The Button Master is a different animal. Not many people if any have the experience we do. We do two things. Lockouts and make lost keys. Today is Monday at 9:19am and we have already had 5 lockouts.
The Button Master works better when it's new. It doesn't work as well with age. The real issue is square buttons vs round buttons. I would say it's one of the better ones on round buttons with a mushroom head. On the smaller round non tapered buttons mostly useless. Once in a while you get lucky. We don't even try on those TBH. We have other methods. On square buttons like a lot of older Toyota trucks it mostly slips off. Once in a while you get lucky but we don't even try on those with it. I am like Rainman with this stuff because it's always the small detail in my business that will get you in without damage and or programming keys. People leave out the fine details and fail so I have to be precise. There are only 2 guys I know that that have more precise knowledge than me because I'm not on the road much any more. Thankfully both those guys work for me.
I actually sent a new design into Access Tools. I spoke to them and sent it to their R&D dept. It was one of my guys who came up with the concept. New Ford trucks with the squeeze paddle handles are a bit tough to open. One of my guys made a tweak to the green tool. They ended up ghosting me. They told me it would be too hard to retool. I had one laying around where the coating came off. I took a torch to it and made my own like my employee did.
Full size Ford Transits, Late model F series, Expeditions, Promasters, H1 Hummers, 11 to 14 Honda's where the flipper goes in instead of out to open just to name a few fun ones to open.

Maybe if you take out the interior of the door you see how this tool should work, and that way you can get some practice, and eventually, you can do it "blindly" from the outside with a lock car.

Slim Jim’s are out… there are lock out kits available that have wedges, air bags and rods…. The police use them often.

It's not a urban legend. A slim jim can activate a air bag, and send it flying back at the user.

    • @scotts4125

Bullshit. If you are outside of the car with door locked how is the airbag going to get you? That doesn't make any sense. I have never seen an airbag go off and we open thousands of cars. We don't slam slim jims down the door either. Airbags also need power to go off. Maybe if the car was running with the door locked and you somehow shorted the wires but that is a 1 in several million thing and still not sure the airbag with would off. The car has to detect an impact to inflate a bag so I am still doubtful it would happen.

I carry an HPC Sir James. They are hard to find. I've been doing auto locksmithing over 40 years. Still have my Curtis Clippers and Framon #2 machine packed away somewhere. Probably 20 years since I used them. Now we collect programmers. We have a couple Smart Pro's. Autel 608, 508, KM100 (never actually used it yet) Smart Box (never used it yet either) and few Xhorse key machines, Kuwai (I think that's how it's spelled) Laser Products machine and probably close to $15,000 on hand of Fobs and transponder keys. It's so crazy how are business has changed. I started out impressioning locks and pulling door and ignition locks for key codes. I think we charged $75 back in the day and people still complained. lol We had a call today on a 68 Mustang keys in the trunk. I turned it down. We don't have blanks for that and I doubt my guy who was close could pick that open. I don't even think he's ever picked a lock but he can open every car out there. I would have either picked that or impressioned it back in the day. I rarely go out myself. We have to be really busy. I hate running calls to be honest but if I have to I go. It's not the work I dislike. I have to hookup my laptop, pair the hotspot to it, I still have to answer calls, dispatch to my guys while running calls. It's not fun. We ran 20 calls today.

Wedges scratch the crap out of cars. I see it everyday from people who tried themselves and didn't know what they were doing. They also break the door pillar plastic. The rest of what you wrote isn't in English so I don't know what you were typing.
